Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Was the United States aware of Israel's plans to conduct an Israeli airstrike targeting a meeting of Hamas’s top leaders in Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Tuesday? According to some reports, the leadership had gathered to discuss a new US-sponsored hostage-ceasefire proposal aimed at ending the war in Gaza. At recording time, reports still differ as to whether the attack was successful. Horovitz untangles what the US may have known of the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed back on Wednesday against mounting international criticism over Israel’s strike against Hamas leaders in Qatar the previous day. Can the furious Qataris and other Gulf States be assured that Israel will not repeat such an attack if the opportunity presents itself? President Isaac Herzog sat down on Wednesday in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for what local media described as a tense meeting. Horovitz delves into how Starmer, in the current anti-Israel climate, was asked to defend himself for meeting with the Israeli president. We also hear what message Herzog attempted to convey. The Munich Philharmonic, led by its future chief conductor, Israeli musician Lahav Shani, was disinvited from a performance on September 18 at the Flanders Festival Ghent, because Shani -- the current conductor of the Israel Philharmonic -- has not clearly disavowed the Israeli government. “We have chosen to refrain from collaboration with partners who have not distanced themselves unequivocally from that regime,” the organizers said in a statement. We discuss this incident, which occurred even as the Toronto International Film Festival screened a previously canceled documentary, “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue,” which charts how retired Israeli general Noam Tibon saved his family and others during the 2023 Hamas attack. With two feature films under his belt, Samuel Van Grinsven has quickly become a vital voice in Australian cinema. His feature debut, the lurid and sumptuous 2019 queer drama Sequin in a Blue Room, utilised neon lights and lingering shots of yearning to amplify the sense of lead actor Conor Leach's youthful Sequin finding his place in a new, inviting world. With his follow up feature, Went Up the Hill, Samuel, alongside regular co-writer Jory Anast, explores facets of grief through a gothic possession drama. Here we follow Jack (Dacre Montgomery) who returns home to New Zealand for the funeral of his mother. There, he forms a fractious bond with Jill (Vicky Krieps), the widow of his mother. Where Sequin in a Blue Room explored different shades of blue, from bright neons to dark navy's, Went Up the Hill immerses viewers in shades of grey, placing Jack and Jill in a brutalist style home overlooking a cold lake. This is a film that's hard to shake. I first saw Went Up the Hill over a year ago now and there are moments in the film which have lingered in my mind in a way that that haunts my dreams. The pairing of Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps is a masterful one, with the two exploring emotionality in a way that we rarely get to see on screen in an Australian film. It is, ostensibly, a film about grief and the loss of someone in your life. For Jack, as an estranged son, he has grappled with processing that grief while his mother was alive, making her true passing feel like a new advent of grief and loss. For Jill, that grief is amplified by the arrival of Jack at her partners house, and what that means for her ability to mourn the loss of her partner. These aspects, and many more, are tenderly explored in the film.In the following conversation, recorded ahead of the films screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Samuel talks about that colour palette for the film, while also exploring the creative path to exploring grief on screen. At the end of this interview, I misquote the title of Max Porter's essential book about grief, his 2015 novella titled Grief is the Thing with Feathers. I want to read a quote from that book which I feel touches on what this film is about 'Ghosts do not haunt, they regress. Just as when you need to go to sleep you think of trees or lawns, you are taking instant symbolic refuge in a ready-made iconography of early safety and satisfaction. That exact place is where ghosts go.'Went Up the Hill arrives in Australian cinemas on 11 September. It is a film that demands a big screen viewing.Read Nadine Whitney's review of Went Up the Hill here and listen to the interview with Dacre Montgomery here. Hosted on Acast. Universal's output in 1944 was packed with horror tales and MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM seems a likely addition to that list of chillers. At least until you realize that a firm 20% of the film's scant running time is taken up by song & dance numbers! Yes, its another horror comedy with a script that started life as a Ritz Brothers feature, but don't let that scare you off. The chills may be lacking but the entertainment value is surprisingly high. And there is a ghost enlivening the proceedings. Oh! And a murder as well. Troy Guinn and I take a run through this humorous creeper and find ourselves having more fun than expected. The credit for that goes to the talented cast so we spend a lot of time talking about the stars and a few of the amazing bit players as well. Where else other than in this movie are you going to hear actor Ian Wolfe say the word ‘Zut'? The film has several great songs and I include Troy's favorite tune in the show because it is far too catchy to ignore. We discuss the plot shenanigans and the script's careful skipping past a subject usually forbidden by the Hays Code. Mention is made of the award-winning career of one of the screenwriters and we point to areas in the dialog where his efforts might be heard. Also, we point the curious to the first English language version of this tale, THE SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM (1933), as a better source of horror thrills if not toe-tapping fun. This 1944 version might serve as a good pairing with that minor classic but only if we can ever get a better-looking print. Come on, Universal. If you have any song recommendations from a scary film thebloodypit@gmail.com is where to send them. And let us know what you think of this film and the podcast in general too. Thank you for listening!

But it's not clear whether stroking the president's ego has long-lasting effects. The flattery was as obvious as it was seemingly effective. Seated at a dinner table in the Blue Room of the White House on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu handed President Trump a piece of paper. “I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize committee,” Mr. Netanyahu said, with news cameras rolling. “It's nominating you for the Peace Prize. It's well deserved, and you should get it.” Mr. Trump declared the gesture “very meaningful,” though he has long said he believes the Nobel committee would never give him the prize. 知识点:Israel /ˈɪzreɪl/,n. a country in the Middle East, known for its historical and religious significance.(以色列,中东国家,以其历史和宗教意义著称) • Israel is located in the Middle East.

What happens when a writer turns silence, fear, grief—and love?—into novels that are barely a couple hundred pages but echo for days? Whether it's love withheld, misplaced, or mourned, Ørstavik's novels speak to each other through unspoken longing and the disorienting nature of grief—with a quiet, cumulative power that's hard to shake. In this episode, we explore the devastating brilliance of Hanne Ørstavik, the Norwegian author whose emotionally precise novels—Love, The Pastor, Ti Amo, and Stay with Me (neither of us has read The Blue Room, but we have it on order)—have deeply moved and unsettled us.We dig into what makes Ørstavik's emotional landscapes so haunting, and why these books, though spare on the surface, feel endlessly deep. From unspoken longing to the disorienting nature of grief, these novels speak to each other in unexpected and beautiful ways. We'd love to hear your thoughts: Have you read any of Ørstavik's work? Which novel struck you most—or which are you most curious to read?Join the Mookse and the Gripes on DiscordAn easy place to respond to our question above is over on Discord! We're creating a welcoming space for thoughtful, engaging discussions about great novellas—and other books things. There's an old saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” By that count, artist Peter Waddell is a masterful storyteller. Beginning in 2004, the White House Historical Association commissioned the artist to create well-researched paintings to represent different periods from White House history that were not drawn, painted, or photographed definitively in their own times. The result is a collection of over a dozen pieces of artwork that capture lesser known moments of presidential life at the White House. Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, spoke with Peter about how these moments were chosen, the meticulous research that went into these paintings, and how Peter is able to create works that transport viewers and students to another time and another place in American history. Stewart and Peter discuss three of his extraordinary paintings that are part of the White House Historical Association's collection: A Vision Takes Form, 1796 about the construction of the White House; Tiber Creek: The Bathers which depicts a moment when President John Quincy Adams escaped a leaking boat; and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy at Malmaison, 1961 which shows Mrs. Kennedy visiting the home of Empress Josephine of France. The Empress's silk draped bed chamber appears to have inspired the redesign and decoration of the Blue Room at the White House during the Kennedy administration. You can view Peter Waddell's paintings for the White House Historical Association here.

It may not be the very biggest game across world football this weekend, but consider one important factor: I'll be there.Yes, The Football Weekend will venture to Goodison Park on Sunday as EVERTON host TOTTENHAM in the Premier League. It's been a strange few years for the home side, no doubt about it. Farhad Moshiri's tumultuous ownership of the club has ended, and the Friedkin Group is coming in. The Sean Dyche era is over, too, and former stalwart David Moyes has returned to the manager's chair. Plus, it's Everton's last season at Goodison, their home since 1892.Joining us to trace all this—and tell me what I can expect to see in the Gwladys Street End this weekend—is podcaster and Everton fan Rodger Armstrong of Blue Monday, a production of The Blue Room podcast. If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Get NordVPN 2Y plan + 4 months extra here ➼ https://nordvpn.com/bluemoon - it's risk-free with Nord's 30-day money-back guarantee! ========== David Mooney is joined by One Football's Dan Burke and by City fan KC to discuss the fallout from that Manchester Derby. Did the defeat - and the manner of it - cross a line? How much further can the bad form go? We spend the show looking for light relief - and we've done it by slipping back into wistful nostalgia. We hear from the former City midfielder Georgi Kinkladze, as he speaks to the show about his three seasons at Maine Road. With Aston Villa and Everton on the horizon, we hear from Frankie Maguire from All Villa No Filler and from Dave Downie from The Blue Room, who both explain how their seasons have been going to this point. Can City stop the rot or are they basically limping along until the January transfer window? Plus, with an idea shamelessly stolen from a bigger podcast, who is the best City player from several different (recent) eras of the club? We discuss the candidates for each period, going back to the promotions in 1999 and 2000. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Director Samuel Van Grinsven returns to our screens with his sophomore feature film, Went Up the Hill, a powerful drama about an abandoned child, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), attending the wake of a mother he never knew, and encountering her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). As Jack and Jill navigate the fractured existence they find themselves in, Elizabeth's spirit emerges in curious and strange ways by possessing each character, resulting in a narrative that flows into the realm of being a possession drama, while never truly immersing itself in the genre expectations that one might have when they hear that this a film with a 'grief driven possession narrative'. Like Samuel's first film, Sequin in a Blue Room, there's an unexpected nature to Went Up the Hill which comes from a foundational level, and is realised in the films sound design, its choice of location - a remote farm in Aotearoa/New Zealand - and the notion that this is a triple hander film delivered by two powerful, impactful performances from Dacre and Vicky. There's an emotional vulnerability to the film that reveals itself as it progresses in a way that feels real and lived-in. How that emotional vulnerability was achieved is what's explored and discussed in the following conversation with Dacre Montgomery, recorded ahead of the films Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Saturday 26 October, where Dacre will be in attendance, and Sunday 3 November. In the following interview, Dacre talk about his studies at WAAPA, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before discussing the tangible aspects of his performance that helped Vicky and himself ground their characters in the moment, while also being able to immerse themselves in the role of Elizabeth as she possesses their characters. Went Up the Hill is another towering achievement of emotional filmmaking from Samuel Van Grinsven, a filmmaker who is defiantly making his mark on global cinema with stories that feel deeply personal, yet completely universal at the same time. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer did not signal any decision on allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia after talks with US President Joe Biden in Washington. Sir Keir said the pair had had a "productive" discussion on Ukraine that concentrated on "strategy", rather than a "particular step or tactic". We hear the view from Moscow and the US.Also on the programme: Devastating floods in Myanmar push its military ruler to make a rare appeal for foreign aid; and an outpouring of sadness and anger as Uganda buries its olympic star, Rebecca Cheptegei, whose coach tells us her life could have been saved.(Photo: Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during a meeting with US President Joe Biden in the Blue Room at the White House in Washington DC. Today I sit down with Todd Mayo owner of one of the coolest concert venues in the world. Years ago a friend sent me a YouTube clip of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood playing at one of the most insane venues I had ever seen. It looked like the band was playing on Mars. I had never seen this venue so I dug in and did some research and found out it was called The Caverns, located in Grundy County Tennessee. This venue was created by my guest Todd Mayo and it quickly became a destination venue. Everyone has played there including Chris Stapleton, Lucinda Williams, Billy Strings and more. There are a handful of absolute magical venues in the world, Red Rocks, The Gorge, Hollywood Bowl, The Sphere and now The Caverns. Todd Sits down with me for an In-Depth conversation on exactly how this place came to be. Not only has Todd created one of the coolest venues in the world he also created an Emmy Award winning TV show on PBS called The Cavern Sessions. Todd has a book coming out in Sept called Caveman Chronicles that I can honestly say is a must read. Also a very special Announcement is at the front of this episode so do not skip the intro.
