We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Maria - Universal income: I work for the Chicago Fire Department as a medic. We do get more people who Overdose on drugs on the first of the month when their checks come in. Peter - Universal Basic Income: there are some people who would cultivate talents that don't necessarily provide money value. It could also help people pray more. Betty - Universal Basic Income and how it relates to AI: I think we need to take into consideration the current world views that the population is too high and this could be used to lower the population. Paul - Basic Universal income is bad because you would become reliant on the government which would give them more power to control our lives. In this episode, you'll hear the recording of a presentation that was delivered at a 2018 Leadership Under Fire National Conference in Evanston, Illinois. The team was humbled by the caliber of leaders who contributed to the event and the types of leaders who rigorously contemplated the moral, mental and physical aspects of mission-oriented leadership and optimal human performance. To include our guest in this episode, retired Chicago Fire Commissioner Bob Hoff. A third-generation firefighter, Bob Hoff started his career as a Cadet with the Evergreen Park Illinois Fire Department in 1972. In 1976, he was hired as an EMT with the Chicago Fire Department and in 1977 he entered the Chicago Fire Academy as a Firefighter/EMT. Hoff served in some of Chicago's busiest fire companies throughout his career. He worked in the Bureau of Operations as a Firefighter /EMT, Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief. He also served as the Director of Training for the Chicago FD and the 1st District Chief in Chicago's downtown high-rise district. He later served as the Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Operations, 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner and Fire Commissioner. He retired from the CFD in 2012 after nearly 36 years of service. Chief Hoff then went on to serve as the Deputy Chief and Chief of the Carol Stream Illinois Fire District until his retirement on January 1, 2020. Hoff's brother, Raymond, was a 32-year veteran of the Chicago FD. His grandfather, Joseph Hoff, retired as a captain in 1936. And his father, Thomas Hoff, was a battalion chief who was killed while fighting a blaze in a South Side apartment building in 1962. His son, Andy Hoff, is an active member of FFPM with the Downers Grove Illinois Fire Department. Uncles, cousins, nephews and brothers-in-laws are all current and retired members of the Fire Service. Notably, his family's service and sacrifice inspired the movie, “Backdraft."

When Failure Is Not An Option With Matthew Svalina, Senior Research Scientist Emeritus, Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute, With Host Richard Levick of LEVICK: Matthew Svalina, Senior Research Scientist Emeritus and a co-founder of Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute, discusses his unique career path with host Richard Levick of LEVICK. Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in 2007, then earned a paramedic license through Malcolm X College in Chicago, where he completed his field internship with the Chicago Fire Department on ambulances serving the south side of Chicago, providing paramedic services in one of the most challenging places in America. Matthew is currently finishing his MD-PhD degree from the University of Colorado-Denver. He discusses the personal challenges of choosing this career and the remarkable rewards. The FDA approves on average 12 drugs every year to treat adult cancer, but has only approved 10 drugs to treat childhood cancer since 1978 (10 in 44 years for kids). Since their inception in 2015, cc-TDI has pushed two drugs into three clinical trials to treat childhood cancer.
Chicago's Office of the Inspector General has published many blockbuster reports over the years. Its job is to investigate corruption, misconduct, waste, fraud and abuse big and small. In recent years, it's found a culture of sexual harassment in the Chicago Fire Department, blasted the Chicago Police Department's response to summer looting in 2020, and helped U.S. Attorney John Lausch secure indictments of City Council members. But despite its importance to chipping away at city waste, the office's top post was left vacant for roughly eight months. Deborah Witzburg, this week's guest, was confirmed to take over in late April. She headed up the IG's public safety section starting in the Spring of 2020, but left when the last IG, Joe Ferguson, announced he was stepping down. She wanted the job. And she got it. But what's she in for? It's no secret that Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Ferguson had a rocky relationship in the last few months of his tenure. She suggested Ferguson wasn't staying in his lane and hadn't delivered on all of the investigations he said he would. We'll talk to Witzburg about whether she thinks the IG's office swerved out of its lane while she was there, how she plans to counter the “trust deficit” that's built up among citizens after years of Chicago corruption, and what it's like being the first woman to lead the office.
Retired Chief Leo Cox talks about how he came from two suburban fire departments to the Chicago Fire Department in 1969. Leo spent his time as a fireman on Engine 77, Lieutenant of Engine 44, and his move to the Southside to be the Captian of Engine 116. Leo was promoted to Battalion Chief and was assigned to Battalion 9 where he had an extremely close call that brought an end to a very very busy career.
WEIRD DARKNESS RADIO SHOW: WEEKEND OF MAY 28-30, 2021HOUR ONE: In November 1638, Dorothy Talby killed her three-year-old daughter. She admitted so when first arrested. But then she refused to say anything when brought before a judge. But then, what would you expect from a woman, which we all know is more easily persuaded by Satan to sin – and women were much more likely to be seduced by witchcraft. At least, that's what people believed in the 17th century. (The Case of Dorothy Talbye) *** It's understood and agreed to by most that while it is a lot of fun to think about, time travel is simply not possible – and will probably never be seeing as we've never met any time travelers. Or… maybe we have? (True Time-Travel Moments) *** Stories of shapeshifters seem to be told worldwide – and the Celtic nations are no different. We'll look at a few shape-changing creatures from Ireland, Wales and Scotland. (Shape-Shifters Of The Celts) *** How do you convince people you are innocent of a crime committed by someone who looks exactly like you and even shares your name? It's the strange story of William West and… William West. But some of the reasons that a child gives for murdering his or her own mother can be downright shocking and unbelievable. (They Murdered Their Mothers) *** For decades, firefighters at the Chicago Fire Department noticed an eerie hand print that left a permanent mark on a casement, which could not be washed, scraped or removed, despite several attempts. Legends circulated, and many believed that the handprint had a rather macabre history, belonging to a fellow firefighter. (The Ghostly Handprint of Francis Leavy) *** Just the word “lobotomy” brings images of cruelty, inhumane treatment under the guise of medicine, and a procedure that could more appropriately be labeled as torture. We'll look at a few cases of individuals who had a lobotomy performed on them… and the disturbing results.
