[School of Movies 2024] You don't need to know a single thing about Ultraman to love this film. We brought in Kaiju and Sentai expert Dan Hoeppner to educate us along with you, regarding the history and cultural background of this character, but the film itself, viewable on Netflix is an absolutely perfect starting point. It is a smashing standalone story about the son of Ultraman, who grew up to be not especially great in the role himself, and instead pursued his mother's passion, becoming a baseball player. He's selfish and arrogant, not a team player, and has estranged himself from his widowed father, Hayao, with neither of them finding fulfilment. Then Kenji had an adorable, ginormous baby space dragon dropped into his lap, and he's about to find out that being a Dad is harder than it looks. It also sits confidently alongside the most gorgeous, dynamic and thrilling animated films of recent years, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Sea Beast and even the hallowed Spider-Verse. This one was commissioned by Thomas Meehan, and we're so glad he prompted us into tackling it now and not holding back because it felt too intimidatingly special. Sometimes we need that fire lit under us. Guest: Dan Hoeppner @MightyMegatron0 of Leftover Army Monsters

Last episode you heard part one of my conversation with Nilo Rodis Jamero, design legend and wonderful person. For this episode, number 106, the first of July 2024 you'll be hearing part two of our chat…On entering the gaming industry Nilo's focus was always about inspiring and guiding production teams to craft original and iconic characters and worlds. He's real advocate for originality and imagination in design, rather than leaning on copying existing designs or using AI to assist those designs. In our conversation, Nilo shares his experiences working with the legendary John Hughes, emphasizing the value of building relationships and understanding a director's vision. We also delve into the crucial role of production design in film and the unspoken code of acceptance when a director gives their nod of approval to a set.Nilo believes that good design should shake the viewer to their core, creating a unique experience. This means a lot of iterating and refining, but through this rigorous process, truly groundbreaking concepts can emerge. Collaboration is another cornerstone of Nilo's philosophy. He believes that the creative process thrives on the participation of diverse talents, each contributing their unique expertise to the project. This collaborative spirit is what drives innovation. Now you'll know if you listened to my chat with Nilo in 2021 and last episode that he's met a lot of key figures in the industry, in this chat he talks about n meeting influential figures like Hayao Miyazaki and Tezuka Osamu. These encounters have not only inspired him but also provided valuable insights into his design and storytelling work. But it's not all work for Nilo—his passions outside of work, like Formula One racing, bring joy and fresh perspectives into his life. There's a great bit at the end of this chat when I tell Nilo I work in F1, and he becomes the fan for a moment. So, buckle up and get ready to dive into the creative mind of Nilo Rodis-Jamero. This episode is packed with insights, inspiration, and a whole lot of passion for the art of design. Donate ButtonAll the linksPeter Kuran's "The Thing" Kickstarter

Starszy pan i czapla. – „Chłopcu i czapli” Bartoszowi Pergółowi opowiada Łukasz Mańkowski, krytyk filmowy i znawca kina Azji.
Prace nad kolejnym filmem trwały parę lat, a budżet urósł do najwyższego w historii japońskiego kina. Serdecznie zapraszamy do słuchania.

Contributo audio Lucky Red.
This week, we watch the newest and likely final Hayao Miyazaki movie. This film was in production for seven years due to a combination of COVID and Miyazaki's slower working pace due to age. It was well worth the effort in our opinions, as he has possibly created the most beautiful movie in his legendary filmography. The Boy and The Heron (2023), directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
We're finishing our anime series with Hayao Miyazaki's career-capping triumph The Boy and the Heron (2023). Join us as we dive deep into the film's meaning and discuss its place among Miyazaki's other great works.

[School of Movies 2023] With the grandfather of the studio, Hayao Miyazaki retired and his son Goro not warmly welcomed by the fans, there was now an enormous question mark over the future of Ghibli that persists to this day. Luckily, there was still amazing talent to be found within their walls. Hiromasa Yonebayashi (better known as Maro) made his directorial debut with one of our faviourites, which positively cries out for watching in HD, The Secret World of Arrietty. It's the tale -adapted from yet another classic children's fantasy book- of tiny people who live unnoticed in our houses, and the perils of their survival. Notable for its different British and American voice actor teams, since over here we got Saoirse Ronan and Tom Holland! After this, Goro attempted a second movie about confused teenagers, this time with a more delicate touch which achieves it low-key melodrama qualities. And in the absence of a breakout new direction, his father Hayao came back out of retirement to direct one of his most sobering reflections on aviation and war, with The Wind Rises (which is far more appealing to me than Oppenheimer's handling of similar themes this year). 2010: The Secret World of Arrietty (1m 55s) 2011: From Up On Poppy Hill (29m 30s) 2013: The Wind Rises (45m 35s)

[School of Movies 2023] This has been a long time coming. You've all been so good and respectful when it comes to not bombarding us with requests for anime shows that we decided to treat you collectively, and finally push the button on the one studio whose body of work is the first thing most people think of when it comes to prestigious films in this medium. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 and have produced two dozen movies to date. This is the first of a series of shows releasing over this year that will cover all of these. And to do that we have to go back to the source. Hayao Miyazaki was one of the founders, alongside Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata, and his is the most singular creative vision, informing upon the direction and philosophy of their art for forty years. Most of this first episode is spent discussing what repeating motifs show up across this body of work, and how much of that ties in with Hayao's worldview. We lightly cover Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro which he directed for Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1979, and then move on to Nausicaa (1984) which was based on a manga book of his. These led up to the actual official formation of Ghibli in 1985. You will definitely pick up on themes that will be coming back around again and again, and we are honoured to be able to talk about these in lengthy depth, even if we do frequently strike an irreverent tone.

My dear Tarnished, the Golden Age is almost upon us. From the silent shadows of the dark times — before Geoff Keighley's glorious SGF reveal — to this bountiful era of daily reveals, it has always been our fate…our golden path…to make it to this day. On our 16th episode, 'A Shadow's Fate' — the final one before Elden Ring's release, and we all cross the foggy sea together — join the exceptionally talented Tarnished artist Gobli Prin and show producer Albert for ‘A Shadow's Fate', as the pair discuss all things life, art, music and more. Enjoy! What if the two Miyazakis — Hidetaka and Hayao — combined into something, or rather someone, whose style is well on its way to surpassing both? Well, in addition to being a truly unique and exceedingly talented illustrator unto himself, this is an accurate way to describe Tokyo-based artist, @gobli_prin. If you haven't already, ahead of this weekend's conversation with this outstanding creator, I highly recommend following his Insta right now! The pair discuss the differences between the two Miyazakis, how combining their sensibilities can prove surprisingly satisfying and unique, and much more. Stay tuned!
This week, The Cultural Frontline explores family, legacy and creativity. Studio Ghibli is one of the biggest names in animation, famous for films such as The Wind Rises, My Neighbour Totoro and the Oscar winning Spirited Away. For years, Studio Ghibli was led by its co-founder, the visionary director, Hayao Miyazaki. Since Hayao‘s retirement in 2014 there have been changes at the iconic animation house, with the emergence of Hayao's son, Goro Miyazaki as a new leading force. Our reporter Anna Bailey speaks to Goro about the challenges of continuing his father's legacy and his new film Earwig and the Witch, a story about magic and family. Is there a work of art - a song, a poem or a film that makes you think of your family? The music producer Fatima al-Qadiri shares the story of how the soundtrack to her favourite game evokes the memories of her childhood in Kuwait during the First Gulf War. Two mothers determined to do what's right for their children. That simple premise is the starting point for the new novel What's Mine and Yours, a multigenerational story of race, family and identity in America by the acclaimed writer Naima Coster. Chi Chi Izundu speaks to Naima about how her novel was shaped by her experiences of childhood and motherhood. Family history, identity and voicing the challenges faced by young working class women, that's the focus of the poetry collection, Where the Memory Was, by British-Somali poet Hibaq Osman. For The Cultural Frontline, Hibaq shares the influences that shaped her writing and reads one of her poems. Presented by Chi Chi Izundu (Photo: Earwig and The Witch. Credit: Studio Ghibli)
