More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

It may seem hopeless. Your life is shattered into a million pieces. You are broken and empty. God is calling you to Himself. He is the master artist who can take your broken pieces and assemble them like a stained glass masterpiece. Amanda Nolan sings about that in her song "Broken Pieces."  Let's explore a "broken pieces" story in the Old Testament. In this episode, I discuss the following: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture – this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Read in context Listen to an audio version of the text Repetition Consult an outside resource Start with God Follow the cross-references Remember, the characters described in the Bible were REAL The free one-page PDF Episode Guide to guide your study - Episode 461 Download A valuable resource to study Ruth - Teaching Ruth and Esther by Christopher Ash - Amazon paid link Reading Old Testament narratives correctly - Bible Project Video A word study on loyal love (translated kindness in Ruth) - Bible Project Video When reading Old Testament narratives, the line is not from Old Testament hero to me, it is from Old Testament to Christ, then to me in Christ Reading the book of Ruth as a foreshadowing of the gospel Five threads to examine as you read: Names of people Places Bethlehem Moab - Numbers 22-25; Deuteronomy 23:3-6 The verb to "turn" or "return" Chesed - loyal love, translated as "kindness" in Ruth Ruth 1:8 Ruth 2:20 Ruth 3:10 Emptiness to fullness The costly and sometimes painful journey to return to Christ   Even as we see the broken pieces of Naomi's life, we see that it was God who caused her to return to the place of promise and hope.   More Than a Song Playlist Additional Resources My new favorite Bible Study Software - Logos Bible Software Affiliate Link This Week's Challenge Read and listen to Ruth several times. One time pay attention to the names of people — when they are used and when they are not. In another read-through, consider the places and the significance of these places. Following some cross-references may give you the historical context you need. Read Ruth again to consider the theme of turning and returning. Consider what you know of God's loyal love — His chesed — and how it is displayed in this narrative. Finally, give thought to the change from empty to full and all of the beautiful drama that unfolds to lead from one to the other as you give your broken pieces to God to make a masterpiece of your life.

Tracy Rhoades is an outspoken Christian woman who encourages unity among all Christian sects. We talk about the importance of loving and ministering to each other as we abide in Jesus Christ. Episode Discussion PointsAs a Christian neighbor sometimes you have no idea how to help others (like when their cows get out) but you go and help anyway. How Traci grew up in a small town attending church and participating with friends in other churches & kept meeting different people from many religions which broadened her perspective of the body of Christ. The importance of having a spiritual toolbox of habits and practices for following Jesus at all times—but especially when life gets a little shaky A personal story of looking for a home for six years with a lot of “why God” moments and finally standing on what would soon be her property in rural Michigan and hearing a quiet voice in her soul whisper, “You'll heal here.” How prayer, scripture and silence played a part in her healing Healing has layers No one likes to have the bottom drop out of life, but we always seem to appreciate the lessons learned through and after hard times happen Having "rhythms of spiritual practices" helps not only us but helps us know how to minister to other in their moments of need. Sometimes the best ministry for those who are struggling is simply the ministry of your presence—just be there Good prayers/phrases to say in shaky ground moments, “Oh Lord have mercy,” or “Oh Lord draw near.” What it means to “abide” with Jesus and how we do it on a daily basis What makes hard situations easier? "As we abide with Christ, He abides with us. And then you don't ever go through shaky times alone.” Levels of relationships we can have with Jesus—and how Tracy wants ALL of Jesus she can receive in abundance. You can share all your emotions with God—and there is usually a Psalm that corresponds to the emotions you are feeling It is okay to write about the hard things you are experiencing and the emotions you feel The importance of unity among Christians “Christ is big enough for all of us." Favorite Bible VerseProverbs 3:5-6—There are so many life truths packed in these two verses. Trust in the Lord—most of the anxiety and fear in the world come from a lack of trust in God (and in His timing) Ministering Ideasif someone loses a loved one—mark the date in your calendar a year out and be sure to pray for, call, text or visit on that day Turn people to Jesus (not to you or the latest self-help book). We need His presence in those times more than anything else Be sensitive to how a grieving person is feeling “today” because grief ebbs and flows Be there to hug them—sometimes no other words are needed Connect with TracyBuy her new book, https://amzn.to/3OS6yNy (Shaky Ground), at any of the major bookstores or online or at https://bookshop.org/books/shaky-ground-what-to-do-after-the-bottom-drops-out/9781640655591 (bookshop.org )(they give a proceed of the book to a local bookstore) Website: https://www.tracesoffaith.com (tracesoffaith.com) check out her section on “All the Churches” She is also on Facebook, Instagram and her favorite—Twitter #tamarakanderson #storiesofhopeinhardtimes #podcast #hope #God #hardtimes #shakyground #christian #jesuschrist #abideinChrist #unity #ministering TranscriptionYou can find the transcription of today's episode here: https://www.tamarakanderson.com/podcasts/traci-rhoades-abiding-in-christ-even-on-shaky-ground

147 – What do you do when your church isn't following Christ?Recently I've met several people who have left their churches because their pastor, the leadership team, or the church as a whole, was not really following Jesus or obeying his teachings.I know folks who have been abused emotionally, spiritually, theologically, and sometimes even physically, in their churches. One or more of their church leaders, and sometimes the whole culture and the resulting politics at church, have been so far away from Jesus's way of thinking and living, that my friends had to leave. Their motives were misunderstood. They were accused of things they didn't do or say. Friends betrayed them and often end up refusing to ever talk to them again. My heart goes out to these folks. And there are thousands upon thousands who have left their churches or are thinking about it.Here are two previous episodes where I interviewed pastors who left their churches because their churches weren't following Jesus76 Keith Giles and the Atonement of Christ 120 Jason Elam: You Are Loved and Accepted by God And by the way, leaving their old churches and their old doctrines behind did not cause them to abandon Jesus. They love him more now than they ever did before. We all need to leave behind any version of Christianity that does not perfectly embrace what Jesus said and did. I am tired of people defending man-made religion. It's time to get back to the religion of Jesus, the original Christianity of Christ. That's what this podcast is all about.Re-examining your faith can be a scary and uncomfortable process. But you're not alone in the journey. More people than you can possibly imagine are on the same path and each may feel like they are the only one with doubts and questions.   There's no formula of what to do when you find yourself in this position or your church isn't following Christ, but here are a few ideas to get you started in this process:Go back to the four Gospels. Take each idea and put it into practice in your daily life. That's one of the best ways to see if Jesus knew what he was talking about.Visit other churches and listen to people with different ideas.Ask questions and write them in a journal.Talk to a friend. And if you need someone to talk to, please contact me. I mean that very sincerely. I would love to talk to you.________________Bible references in this week's episode. Did you believe there were monsters in your closet or under the bed when you were little? Did you ever find that to be true? Has anyone ever said something about you or to you that you might have felt was untrue at first but then you believed their lie? (Like how you look, etc). I'm today's episode, I challenge you to stop believing the “noise”…to let go of past comments that others might have made about us. To not buy into the “monsters under the bed” who are not real. I hope each of us grows and realizes we are not what other people say we are. They may say things out of spite, ignorance, jealousy, anger, or just plain ugliness in their own heart. if it's not good it didn't come from God. I know I am who God says I am. God says I am good. Period. Let me say that again… I am who God says I am!! I know that God's word says that HE made me and knew everything about me before I was born. I know He promises good for me and that I owe everything to Him. I grow as a person, I help others and I follow my passion for working with others because I love God and I love me and who He made me. It took me many years to see that I was worthy and it didn't help when I had people in my life who called me anything less than that. What do you believe about yourself?? Just a few of the many scriptures that affirm who we are in Christ: “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭NLT‬ “So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:4-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬ _____________________________________ PS. Abbie Twingstrom's journey on the covenant path has included both darkness and light. As a young adult missionary and newlywed, Abbie felt troubled by the lack of answers she received and struggled to continue to choose to stay in the church . In this interview Abbie shares how she navigated that difficult time and ultimately came to learn how the Savior can be found in the darkness and in the light as well as in all the phases in between.   Overall, Abbie expresses her faith that no matter where you are on the path, there is peace in Jesus Christ and He is there for all of it. Journal Questions Abbie shared that she has discovered 5 different phases of light in her own life. Those phases are: recognize, seek, absorb, reflect and create. Abbie emphasized that these five phases are not steps and that the Savior can be found in all of them. You don't arrive at one and then move on to the next. You are probably going in out of phases, even in a single day. Take a moment to ponder where you are at right now with feeling light in your life. How can you see the Savior in your current phase?   In the interview, Abbie and I discussed how taking care of yourself physically and emotionally will help you spiritually because they are all tied together. How are you taking care of yourself physically? How are you taking care of yourself emotionally? What do you feel you can do physically or emotionally that will help you spiritually?   Abbie's testimony is that there is peace in Christ even when you are in darkness. Woven in Truth Podcast

In this episode, Jessy Tohme from Lebanon takes us back to the essentials of our faith. The majority of women are burnt out, worn out, & stressed out. Sometimes we open our eyes spiritually and realize we’ve drifted from the joy and zeal we once had in Christ. Jessy reminds us of the battle we are in and the mission we signed up for when we said “yes” to Jesus. About the Speaker:Jessy was born in Lebanon, the country that is worldwide famous for its years of wars. She spent most of her childhood hiding with my family in shelters…By God’s grace, she became a disciple of Christ in 1999, and married her husband Moufid in 2000. God has been generous and blessed them with two adorable kids, Abigail and Andrew. Her and her husband have led a church in Lebanon for many years and now they oversee the Middle East region of our churches. She currently has her own TV show has hosted a Radio Show for 10 years. As a marriage facilitator, her main goal is to prepare couples for their marital journey and council those who are already struggling with their marriages.Episode Notes: Sometimes we forget that we are in a war- a spiritual battle. We open our eyes and realize we’ve drifted spiritually. #1. Remember you are in a battle John 10:10- The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. What has satan killed in your heart? Maybe your dreams. What has he destroyed? Maybe some of your relationships? We get off track when we forget that our battle is spiritual and we start battling people… we pick the wrong battle. Our enemy is not our sisters, our family, etc- it is against satan, against the forces of evilThe battle is tough, but it is so worth it. We must be united in order to win this battle- he will work so hard to divide us. We must put our pride, our rights, our position, our earthly treasures to death- just like Jesus did… what are we willing to lose in order to gain Jesus and gain influence? #2. Remember your enemy Majority of women are burnt out, worn out, stressed out.We can forget our mission. Our joy and zeal can be hard to find after “life gets in the way”.In what areas are we ignoring God’s voice in our lives?Mark 11:1-11: Jesus asks for a donkey… He needs a donkey to carry Him & message… Are we willing to be the donkey? We shift into just asking God for things instead of just be willing to do whatever He is asking of us… we need to remember our mission. Matthew 27:57-60 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. How well do you care for the body of Christ? Even when you aren’t “getting anything out of it” or it doesn’t seem appealing?#3. Keep your priorities rightWe need to delegate, but we also need to empower others around us. We need to prioritize loving God & Jesus, loving ourselves and caring for ourselves, & loving our families. This is how we avoid burn out… we can live and die happy & joyful. What is Freedom in Christ? - Even in The Land of the Free, we have laws that govern our freedom. Jesus didn't free you from God's authority. He was liberated you to walk in relationship with God and to be the kind of person He created you to be. Now that's freedom worth singing for! Hillsong Worship's song, Who You Say I Am, exclaims the beauty of being a child of God. I am who God says I am! You are who God says you are too.
