Louis Belcourt/CKTZ News -The Village Commons construction project aims to have its new structures operational by end of October, says General Contractor Richard Andrews. In January, the Village Commons title was transferred from CCEDA to the Cortes Island Community Foundation. The CICF set out to develop the land for community usage with a variety of grants. The current project underway is “a combined shared meeting and office space” with an operating title of “the Nook.” “It's two small buildings that are going to be covered by one roof, and there'll be a fairly extensive deck and breezeway between the two buildings through which people can pass,” says Andrews. Recently finished was the “wild play zone” which is an “interactive playground and sculptural area,” including a large swing, a ship-like deck with seats and a small hut made of driftwood. The remaining projects include three shipping containers installed for non-profit storage and an outdoor pavilion for outdoor gatherings and performances.
De Clarke/ Cortes Currents - On February 12th at the Mansons Fire Hall, Sandra Wood and Kate Maddigan hosted a grant writing workshop for social profit organisations on Cortes Island. Kate and Sandra have considerable experience in grant writing; they offered guidelines, tips, and advice for those seeking funding. The event was sponsored by the Social Profit Forum, and attended by representatives from the Art Gallery, DCC, BetterAtHome/SOS, Cortes Currents, CIFA, CICF, FOCI, CCEDA, CHS, and SCCA. Here are a few examples of advice shared at this workshop by the seasoned grant writers:

Louis Belcourt/ CKTZ News - An anonymous donor has donated around $250,000 to create a one time, experimental grant program that gives directly to the Cortes community. The Cortes Island Community Foundation (CICF) was chosen to create the program and distribute the funds in the form of one time, cash "gifts" to individuals. The gifts never have to be paid back, and the CICF do not need receipts of how the cash was spent. "We want people to apply for money for their specific needs instead of trying to fit their needs into a box like most other grants," says Isabelle McKnight, executive administrator for the CICF. "What the Cortes Foundation wants to do is just have people apply for what they actually need, whether that's a car to get their kids to school or dental work that they need to get to town for, whatever it is." The funds will be distributed in gifts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 and aren't taxable. The program is looking to focus on families and individuals that are in acute financial need. "It's a very generous, one time thing that the donor has offered and they wish to remain anonymous," says McKnight. "And it's a pilot program, so if we can figure out how to run this and it's really successful, we're hoping to attract other donors to do projects like this, because this is the core of what we want the foundation to be, is to provide whatever people in the community actually need." More information can be found at the CICF's website.

On June 30, Brian Payne will finish a 23-year run as CEO and president of the Central Indiana Community Foundation and president of the Indianapolis Foundation. You can think of CICF as an umbrella organization that includes the Indianapolis Foundation and many other foundations and charitable funds that make nearly $100 million in grants every year to help not-for-profit groups in central Indiana. Over 23 years of Payne's leadership, the total assets of the CICF collective organization have grown from $338 million to more than $1 billion. For that alone, Payne is widely considered one of the most influential not-for-profit leaders in the city. But he also is the founder and primary creative force behind the $63 million Indianapolis Cultural Trail that loops downtown, links its six cultural districts and has become a major driver of economic development along its path. He further cemented his reputation for taking on big challenges when, in 2018, CICF formally changed its mission to support racial equity and inclusion and to dismantle institutional racism in central Indiana. At CICF, the new focus on fighting racism and creating opportunity for people of color led to changes big and small—from anti-racist training for its staff and cultivating new vendors to structural shifts that affected which programs and initiatives it decides to fund. The new focus was received positively by many and was criticized by others. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Payne explains why he has decided to retire from full-time work, what he plans to do next, and how CICF will change once he leaves. We also discuss the impact of the Cultural Trail, why CICF decided to change its mission in 2018 and the challenge of measuring its progress on a goal as large as dismantling institutional racism. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

“Once you experience meaningful work, you can’t go back.” Clayton De Fur, the Sr. Community Leadership Officer at the Central Indiana Community Foundation, joins us this week to share his story and discuss the CICF’s strategy and impact. Following the advice of his career test, Clayton graduated from IU Bloomington with a master's degree in public affairs with a focus on non-profit management. Fortunately, he’s never turned back. In what he feels like is one of his dream roles, Clayton handles grant-making and non-profit relationships focused in areas including arts and culture, environment, animal welfare, food access, nutrition, and health. In this episode, we dive deep into the issue that CICF has chosen to tackle: Systemic Racism. Clayton candidly reveals how we can only fix access to opportunity if we focus on race. Once the CICF recognized this problem, they decided to change their mission to “mobilize” a “community where all individuals have equitable opportunity…” and have initiated change in Indiana. Including partnering with the Drink Culture Podcast to present the Seeing White series that helps attendees understand whiteness. How do we create an inclusive city? If anyone knows what it takes, it’s Brian Payne. Join us on Monday, September 9th for a lively discussion with Brian Payne, President and CEO at the Central Indiana Community Foundation and President of the Indianapolis Foundation. Find out how we can help create neighborhoods and environments that empower people, change systems that unfairly hold people back, and dismantle systemic racism. Get the scoop on what it takes to create an Inclusive City and hear their plan for a more equitable Central Indiana. CICF Strategic Plan: At CICF, we’re going all in. We have a new mission to mobilize people, ideas and investments to make this a community where all individuals have equitable opportunity to reach their full potential— no matter place, race or identity. We have goals that will take years—if not decades—to achieve. We know this work is complicated and we will make mistakes. We need this community to learn with us, hold us accountable and become our partners. We are committed to doing the work, but we cannot do it alone. If we want Central Indiana to be a healthy and thriving community with inclusive economic growth, something has to change. We cannot stay comfortable. It’s time to reach for more—more opportunities and a more equitable playing field. About Brian Payne: Brian Payne is the president and CEO of the $800 million Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) and The Indianapolis Foundation. On this episode, we interview CEO Tammie Barney and Program Manager Thomas Christenson of TeenWorks. TeenWorks provides a year-round employment and college readiness program with supportive services for teens throughout the school year. While their paid employment program gives teens the chance to earn a paycheck, the TeenWorks experience is much more than a job. Participating teens build professional resumes, gain job skills for the future, participate in volunteer projects to give back to the community, and receive hands-on instruction to build key college and career readiness skills in one of our five career pathway areas: Health & Life Science, STEAM, Logistics Distribution & Transportation, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship. During the summer training program, TeenWorks provides transportation, daily meals, and direct support to help teens discover passions and career aptitudes through exposure, experience, and assessments including MBTI & Strong. During the school year, TeenWorks continues to provide support to their students through employability skills training, mentoring, SAT and ACT prep, and community service outings. Upon successful completion of the program, all TeenWorks teens are also eligible for one of six annual college Scholarships provided by the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Family Foundation. As they begin their post-secondary plans, TeenWorks Pro students who have completed 2 or more years of the program are encouraged to apply for a TeenWorks Scholarship through CICF. Most importantly, the TeenWorks experience empowers teens to discover a new level of self-confidence and recognize that going to college and achieving professional success is within their reach. Circling back to the Indiana Sports Corp and the new Indy Ultimate urban adventure race. Because of rescheduling, we missed the first registration deadline for the race, but they may have numbers - plus there's everything else happening with ISC over the next six months (basketball, basketball, basketball, swimming and diving, golf). Guests are Craig Lippincott, Indiana Sports Corp director of business development; Chris Panyard, Indiana Sports Corp event manager (The Ultimate is also brought to you by the CICF.)
Ryan Brady is Director of Strategic Projects for Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF). Ryan works to define, measure and communicate the impact that CICF is making in central Indiana. Ryan also leads donor services for The Glick Fund. Essay text available online here.
