Detroit is no longer just the Motor City, it's becoming a hub for clean energy innovation. As climate change forces global shifts in infrastructure, the spotlight is turning to advanced, decentralized solutions like microgrids. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that microgrids could help improve resilience and reduce emissions, especially in aging urban power systems. With energy costs climbing and grid reliability becoming more critical, cities like Detroit are now racing to modernize their energy backbone. Can aging coal-fired power plants transition to cleaner alternatives without disrupting our energy supply? And can Detroit, a city long synonymous with industrial decline, lead the way in the energy revolution? This episode of DisruptED, hosted by Ron Stefanski, features entrepreneur and engineer Ademola Fagade, founder and CEO of Geo Prime Energy. Together, they explore how microgrids, hydrogen fuel, and modular energy systems are reshaping the future of sustainable power—and why Detroit is central to that transformation.Key Highlights from the Conversation:Microgrids as a Bridge to the Future: Fagade outlines how modular microgrids can help large energy producers make gradual, safe transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy without total infrastructure overhauls.Hydrogen's Disruptive Potential: With hydrogen fuel costs projected to fall from over $4.50 to as low as 13 cents per gallon thanks to new technologies, Fagade sees a realistic, scalable path toward green energy.Detroit as a Launchpad: Fagade shares how personal history, mentorship, and opportunity rooted him in Detroit—a city he now sees as essential to his mission of global energy transformation.Ademola Fagade is the founder and CEO of GeoPrime Energy, a Detroit-based company pioneering modular microgrid technology and hydrogen integration. Fagade gained firsthand experience in power plant operations and decommissioning as a former DTE Energy engineer. His technical expertise and passion for innovation have earned him contracts with major utilities and partnerships with organizations like TechTown and NPower.

In this episode, we dive into the incredible journey of Sean Jacob, whose impressive career spans across multiple sectors, from Defence to Commercial, Aviation to Finance, both in the UK and internationally. With an exceptional ability to bridge the gap between business strategy and technology, Sean has been the driving force behind numerous successful projects, programmes, and transformations. Sean's career would be the envy of many, with roles as Vice President, Operations for L3 Commercial Training Services, Programme Director for the AA Group Plc, and senior-level leadership roles for high-profile organisations such as Unilever, Orange, nPower, O2, The World Bank, T-Mobile, and Compaq. When given the opportunity to invest in and manage a commercial flight school, Sean embraced it with open arms. After all, he had transformed the work processes and infrastructures of major organisations, worked with exciting start-ups, and even taken a company into the Sunday Times Fast Track 100. Enthusiastically, he set about bringing these skills to bear on a company that appeared to be doing well, had competent and enthusiastic people working for it, and would benefit from someone with considerable commercial experience taking the reins, helping the team work more effectively and creating a company set for success. But that's not what happened… In this episode, we examine the intriguing story behind a slew of negative headlines in May 2023 following the collapse of Shoreham's FTA flight school. As Steven Bartlett says, “FAILURE IS FEEDBACK, FEEDBACK IS KNOWLEDGE AND KNOWLEDGE IS POWER”. Don't miss out on the insights and wisdom Sean has to share from his past successes and, yes, this one failure which contains salutary lessons for us all. We've all seen the studies that have shown how a diverse workforce leads to better productivity, increased profits and market share, and greater creativity and innovation. But with so many positive outcomes related to diverse workforces, why are so many organizations failing to attract and retain a diversified workforce – including in the senior leadership ranks? What are we getting wrong and what should we be doing differently? According to my guests on this episode of my “Leadership Biz Cafe” podcast, Bertina Ceccarelli and Susanne Tedrick, the key is understanding how to use innovation principles to drive an organization's DEI efforts. Bertina is the Chief Executive Officer of NPower, one of the most successful non-profits in North America committed to helping young adults and military-connected individuals launch tech careers. And Susanne is the author of Women of Color in Tech and a cloud computing technical trainer for a Fortune 500 technology company. Together, they co-authored the book “Innovating For Diversity – Lessons from Top Companies Achieving Business Success through Inclusivity”, which makes the compelling case for why diversity and innovation are not just interconnected, but how innovation can actually help organizations succeed in their DEI initiatives. Of course, to succeed in these efforts, we first have to get a better understanding of what these terms of diversity, equity and inclusion really mean. And I'm grateful to Bertina and Susanne for not only helping to bring clarity to this in our conversation, but for also providing practical advice for how leaders can succeed at creating a more diverse workplace that will not only benefit their organization, but also those their organization serves. No matter what you might think about diversity in today's workplaces, I want to strongly encourage you to give this episode a listen as I'm sure some of what Bertina and Susanne share in this conversation will surprise you and definitely give you some food for thought. Last month, the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection brought in four tech leaders to talk about our big cybersecurity problem: the lack of people. The hearing was held to assess potential ways to increase the talent pool for cybersecurity candidates. And ensure that pipeline can satisfy the appetite of cyber incidents to come over the next few decades.Anjelica Dortch, the Senior Director for U.S. Government Affairs at SAP America, Inc., Will Markow, the Vice President of Applied Research at Lightcast, Tara Wisniewski, the Executive Vice President for Advocacy, Global Markets, and Member Engagement at ISC2, and Col. Chris Starling (Ret.), the Executive Director for California NPower were all in attendance at the subcommittee hearing. Joining the Security Clearance Careers podcast is Nelson Abbott, who is the Sr. Advanced Director of Program Operations. He tells us more about the subcommittee hearing, what the US is doing wrong in cyber hiring, and how bootcamps like NPower's can help talent pivot to cyber without being buried in debt. For many young adults across Wilson County, it's a struggle to choose between family and career. Especially among the Hispanic community where family is at the core, young people are forced to choose lucrative jobs in other cities over staying closer to home where career options are limited. The APRN Consensus Model was created in 2008 to align the interrelationships between four key components of advanced practice nursing: licensure, accreditation, certification and education — also known as LACE. Hear AANP members Drs. Benjamin Smallheer and Carolina "Callie" Tennyson of Duke University School of Nursing elaborate on these issues and describe an innovative program they've helped develop to support NPs seeking to expand into additional areas of clinical care. Read a Feb. 2022 The Journal for Nurse Practitioners (JNP) article by Tennyson and Smallheer on Competency-Based Education for Nurse Practitioner Certification Alignment to learn more about this important topic. As a reminder, AANP members enjoy free access to JNP articles. In this show, I welcome my guest, Connie Rios as we talk about her organization, NPower that help veterans and young adults create pathways to economic prosperity by helping them launch digital careers from underserved communities.
It's difficult for veterans to assimilate into the world after ending their military careers. Whether they lack the skills to enter the workforce or require PTSD support, the challenges are numerous. That's precisely why so many veterans are struggling after finishing their service. More so, it's precisely why so many veterans choose to stay in the military and follow a regimented lifestyle. NPower wants to create pathways for veterans and people in poverty to the middle class by focusing on tech skills, support, and quality job placement. Find out how NPower helps individuals skill up and get ready for in-demand tech jobs.
