Clearly we're at an inflection point in the history of humanity.  Our experiment with a notional democracy is failing and either we find something that actually works, or we sink into autocracy. And given that the current global flavour of autocracy is in deep denial of the climate and ecological catastrophe that's currently underway, then that's a pretty fast road to extinction: you can't deny your way out of biophysical reality. So what can we do, we who care deeply about passing an inhabitable - thriving - world to the generations not yet born?  We need to go back to basics. We all need clean water, clean air, safe shelter and good nutritious food - and we are rapidly heading for a space where just accessing these will become more of a priority than our recent experiment with unleashing ancient sunlight has led us to believe. But more than this, the community that grows around these, particularly the growing and sharing of food - is the glue that keeps us together. We are a prosocial species. We are astonishingly creative when we put our minds to it. So what happens when we put our minds to creative ways of growing and sharing food that are founded in solid values of cohesion and connectivity?  One of the things that happens is the Open Food Network which is a global community of farmers, growers, community food enterprises and software geeks with a common belief that world food systems are broken - and that better, more connected, open, resilient systems can arise in their place.  They are building alternative food systems from the bottom up: this is their theory of change and this is a recent podcast about a new OFN project called the Power of Food.So this week, I've been talking to Nick Weir who helped to set up the Open Food Network UK. Nick has a background in IT account management, but, as you'll hear, he is also a long-term grower who co-founded the Stroudco Food Hub and Stroud Community Agriculture and is deeply passionate about the role of innovative food systems in creating a kinder, more interconnected society, and the ways in which the Network can model a new way of working which empowers people to bring more of themselves to their work.  If you're feeling crushed by the global political chaos, I hope this conversation cheers you as it did me, with living examples of change happening on the ground, and the ripple effects it can have. Open Food Network Global https://openfoodnetwork.org/Open Food Network uk https://about.openfoodnetwork.org.uk/Power of Food podcast  https://www.wearecarbon.earth/power-of-food-collaboration/ Open Food Network resources https://about.openfoodnetwork.org.uk/resources/Landworkers' Alliance https://landworkersalliance.org.uk/our_vision/Sustain https://www.sustainweb.org/about/Social Farms and Gardens https://www.farmgarden.org.uk/about-us/what-we-doThe Power of Food theory of change https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oSn8g-b-GlVku9g9TOKoVO0GvxSRSuCy/Living Justice https://livingjustice.earth/projects/

Chris says, “I'm a firm believer of rather than talking about the problem, become the solution, and we did that.” What was the solution? Listen to find out.   Joe Arnold, retired SVP at Suntrust Bank, and panel moderator of the conference. Joe notes: “We've got a lot of CEOs who are constantly working in their own vacuum and don't know some of the other CEO leaders across our city, and we thought putting together an annual conference about four and a half hours once a year would be a great way to pull them all together. And I'm just delighted that here in our 13th year that again, we've got to sell out crowd.”   Mindy Binderman, Executive Director of GEEARS, the Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students. We talk about issues of the importance of leadership in all of nonprofit work, “because we know that good leadership is essential for getting great outcomes for kids.”   Howie Rosenberg, Executive Director of Gigi's Playhouse Atlanta, a Down syndrome achievement center offering free services to participants and their families with Down syndrome. “I'm very passionate about what I do. I love my job. I love having no barrier for people to be successful and to get services. I can tell you we may have a family that lives at Country Club to the south, and we might have family that lives in their car and they get the same quality service and the same experiences as each other.”   Ron Alston, Senior Vice President at Truist, leading the Not-For-Profit & Government Banking practice. We discuss how nonprofit banking may differ from any other kind of banking: “Nonprofit needs are different. They really revolve around financing solutions they have. So if they are engaged in a capital campaign and they are building infrastructure, they can utilize tax exempt financing vehicles that small businesses don't have access to. If they're doing work in low to moderate income communities, there are tax credit programs that can be used to help them complete projects…” We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. We'll spotlight some powerful examples of how settler-led and Indigenous-led organizations are creating better working relationships, and hear from Indigenous leaders on what more the sector needs to do to advance reconciliation work. CharityVillage Resources From This Episode·        CharityVillage Connects: How Bill S-216 Could Transform the Canadian Nonprofit Sector ForeverUpdate: Bill S-216 has now been passed “in essence” via Bill C-19, the Budget Implementation Act. Bill C-19 included measures that changed the “direction and control” requirements that regulate charities who work with non-charities. According to Senator Ratna Omidvar, sponsor of Bill S-216, “These are big and important changes. They provide a path to get rid of the deeply embedded form of systemic racism that was contained in the Income Tax Act. In its place will be strong, accountable and effective partnerships based on mutual respect.”Bill S-216, otherwise known as the Effective and Accountable Charities Act, sought to amend the Income Tax Act to empower charities by allowing them to more effectively collaborate with a wider range of organizations, including those without charitable status, which the Act refers to as “non-qualified donees”. Proponents of the Bill said the amendments were necessary to get rid of burdensome and expensive redtape and outdated legal bureaucracy. But the key shift proposed by Bill S-216 is much more aspirational: to eliminate the deeply-rooted and historic paternalism that many see embedded in the current rules about how charities can operate. In this episode, we speak with Senator Ratna Omidvar, sponsor of Bill S-216, and with other nonprofit sector experts to explore the pros and cons of this legislation, as well as the deeper implications of what it means for Canadian charitable organizations now that it's become law. ·        CharityVillage Connects: Indigenous Leaders Discuss Truth and Reconciliation in the Nonprofit SectorPlease note: This podcast discusses topics that may be distressing and awaken memories of past traumatic experiences and abuse. Support is available for anyone affected by their experience at residential schools or by related reports. The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line provides 24-hour crisis support to former Indian Residential School students and their families toll-free at 1-866-925-4419. Immediate emotional support is available by contacting the Hope for Wellness Help Line toll-free at 1-855-242-3310, or by online chat at hopeforwellness.ca. In this episode, upon the first anniversary of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we'll hear unique perspectives from Indigenous leaders from across Canada on what September 30 means to them, the painful legacy it symbolizes, and how, together, we can hopefully move forward. Underlying these discussions is the role that Canadian nonprofits can play in supporting Indigenous-led charitable activities. Considering that The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was established over 14 years ago, why has the sector failed to take a more meaningful role in an area where its support could make a real difference? Tune in to this special episode of CharityVillage Connects to hear from Indigenous leaders about how the nonprofit sector can better support, and ally with, Indigenous-led organizations and communities. Additional Resources From This EpisodeWe've gathered the resources from this episode into one helpful list:·        Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action·        Canadian charities giving to Indigenous charities and qualified donees - 2019 (Blumbergs)·        Allowing the Community to Decide for Itself (Toronto Star, 2023)·        Calgary Foundation: Reconciliation·        The Declaration of Action (The Circle)·        McConnell commits $30M in capital transfers to Indigenous-led foundations (2023) ·        National Indigenous Economic Strategy Learn more and listen to the full interviews with the guests here.Mary Barroll, president of CharityVillage, is an online business executive and lawyer with a background in media, technology and IP law. In this episode the Pride of Louisville, Kentucky, JP Davis, offers to support Kristi's non-profits K9s4COPS and K9s4KIDS, which deploy canines and their handlers to protect schoolchildren, hunt down narcotics and dealers, and combat crime across the US.   We discuss how law enforcement dogs could help in the horrific school shootings across the country. They already provide protection for thousands of school children every day, and enhance the school communities in which they serve by safeguarding both the mental and physical welfare of the children. As presidential candidate Nikki Haley asked: "Why don't we have this in every school?" Then there are the millions of dollars in drugs Kristi's dogs have helped remove from the streets with their law enforcement handlers throughout the United States.JP is a social entrepreneur, serial mega-fundraiser for important causes, and a gay man who bucks the perception that Louisville is only for straights. He's enjoyed a stellar career which has taken him from White House Intern under George Bush Jr., to assistant to a Conservative member of the UK Parliament, to returning to Louisville to launch his consulting firm, JP Davis Partners, and to his support for both infrastructure organizations and nonprofits. We discuss the challenges of sustaining non-profit organizations in a world of scarcity, from convincing federal and state lawmakers of the merits of the programs, to the challenge of soliciting the smallest of donations to protect our citizens and communities at large. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyjpdavis/ https://www.jpdavispartners.com/abouthttps://www.whitneystrong.org/storyhttps://www.K9s4cops.orgSTORIES00:00 Start00:13 In Person JP Davis "The Groupie"00:44 "You are Miss Texas" 01:01 "If you don't know what's going on around you, how can you conduct your day?" 01:24 Survival groups: Dr. Pepper, Beckys, Blue Bell Ice Cream, 'Whataburger' power outage map02:25 K9s4COPS 02:48 "It was a robust itinerary"03:25 College football; and name, image, and likeness04:30 Dude Perfect at Texas A&M05:39 JP is a fundraising guru06:09 "Fundraising is not asking for money" 06:29 The Whitney Austin Story (Whitneystrong.org) - mass shooting survivor07:35 The Pulse Nightclub Shooting - a dog could have sniffed the shooter's weapon08:33 "Projects like this give me hope"08:27 "$25-thousand for a dog? The 2024 CanadaHelps Giving Report contains some disturbing news – it found that for the eleventh year running, the number of Canadians making donations to charities has declined. Weaver: Beyond the Numbers

For the first episode of Weaver's “Not-For-Profit” podcast series, the company's Tax Partner, Kirby Ross, and Assurance Partner, Jackie Gonzalez, discussed unrelated business income tax (UBIT) and functional expenses in the context of nonprofit organizations. Kirby explained that a UBIT is a tax levied on income generated by a nonprofit through activities unrelated to its exempt purpose. The goal of UBIT is to create a level playing field between nonprofits and for-profit businesses, preventing unfair competition.Ross and Gonzalez also focused on …• UBIT explained: Tax on nonprofits for income from unrelated activities, aim to create fair competition with for-profit businesses.• Identifying and managing UBIT: Nonprofits should examine revenue streams, understand triggers, and strategically plan to address potential taxes.• Functional expenses discussion: Focus on accurate allocation between program and supporting services, with consistent policies and good stewardship for donor confidence. Some examples of UBITs include advertising revenue and debt-financed rental income. Auditors play a crucial role in identifying UBITs by examining an organization's revenue streams, particularly miscellaneous income. Although paying UBITs might seem unfavorable for a nonprofit, it can still have advantages for an organization to engage in lucrative ventures and pay taxes on the income generated, as long as the net proceeds are used for its exempt purposes.Another topic discussed in the conversation was the statement of functional expenses. Gonazlez and Ross talked about the importance of accurately allocating expenses between program and supporting services. Consistency in allocations and having clear policies are crucial for both auditing and tax purposes. Rating agencies like Charity Navigator assess nonprofits based on their expense allocation, with higher ratings going to organizations that allocate a larger percentage of their expenses to program services.A good target for a highly functioning nonprofit is to allocate less than 15% of its expenses to supporting services, with the rest going to program services. A lower percentage allocated to program services could have negatively impacted the organization's reputation and deterred potential donors. The conversation concluded with both speakers acknowledging the importance of auditors in helping nonprofits accurately report their expenses and assess their UBIT exposure.
