In the late hours of a Wednesday evening, specifically April 17th, a frightful incident painted a grim picture of life in Houston, Texas. The serene Southwest Houston neighborhood, particularly the Sharpstown region was shattered quite abruptly when a purported narcotics transaction turned sour. The victims in the spotlight are two young teens merely 16 years old, who apparently decided to target a fellow 19-year-old. Ugly enough, they chose not to simply rip the teen off, but inflicted physical assault upon him, causing a tumult of panic and fear. As reported by local news outlet ABC 13, the scenes of this harrowing ordeal unfolded at the El Paraiso Apartments complex nestled in the aforementioned Sharpstown area. As the narrative illustrates, the unsuspecting 19-year-old individual was thought to be engaged in a drug deal with the two younger boys. Rather than adhere to the 'code of conduct' of such illegal transactions, the boys turned on him, opting for an explosion of violence. Descending into the realm of brutal assaults, the two teens brandished a pair of the notorious brass knuckles. With the blatant ambition of robbing him clean, they administrated a severe beatdown on their target. The disparity in the situation was soon to change, however, the victim was instructed to fetch something valuable from inside his dwelling. A scandalous ploy intended to rob him blind, but fate had other plans. Instead of surrendering to the ruthless demands, the victim found fortitude in the most unexpected of places - his mother. His mother, acknowledging the direness of the situation, handed him a firearm, drastically shifting the power dynamics of the situation. This weapon became the lifeline for the 19-year-old, who held on to it as an anchor in the storm. The confrontation spiraled further downwards when the audacious teens expanded their threshold of aggression by threatening the mother. An unacceptable cross-line that catalyzed an immediate and severe reaction from the 19-year-old, as he turned the firearm on them. The first bang from the gun echoed, freezing the scenario for a moment, the second shot soon followed - two lives on the balance. Between the flicker of panic and adrenaline, one of the young teens succumbed to his injuries, passing away on the spot. His unfortunate cohort suffered harsh injuries but clung on to life. A rescue team quickly rushed the surviving teenager to the nearest hospital. The chaos of the event ended with a somber note, with the aggressors' lives shattered, the victim landed in the hospital. The victim, bruised and battered from the assault of the vicious teens, needed immediate medical attention. On-site, it was the brass knuckles-induced vicious beatdown that bore the brunt of the trauma. As if the scene wasn't horrifying enough, he was compelled to pull the trigger on the boys, leaving him scarred mentally, awaiting proper care at the hospital. A voice emerged, offering commentary amidst the chaos, a police Lieutenant named Riley. His portrayal of the event marked the severity in rather grim tones, 'Young adults, all between 16 to 19, found themselves caught in this dreadful situation. Both suspects were shot with one taken away by the reaper here itself. The surviving suspect sustained injuries to the abdomen and leg and is hospitalized. It was indeed a tumultuous event.' ABC 13 facilitated the public viewpoint on this case by presenting an interview with one of the apartment complex residents, Brian Payne. Ironically, rebuking extreme violence, Payne expressed a longing for days of simpler confrontations. He reminisced about times when disputes were solved by fistfights, limiting severe injuries and minimizing risks for innocent bystanders. His words reflected a melancholy nostalgia, 'I desire a return to those times when fighting didn't involve bullets. When the worst that could happen was one coming out with a black eye rather than in a body bag.' A sentiment brewing in his heart once he saw someone whose life was extinguished abruptly following a series of gunshot sounds. According to Payne, he discovered the lifeless teen right outside his residence, 'I was resting when deafening gunshots broke the tranquility of the night. Coming out, I found a youngster lying on his stomach. He was already gone when I checked for a pulse.' A grim finding that adds to a growing list of tragedies plaguing Houston. Tragic as it may be, this unfortunate series of events isn't the anomaly but rather a crude norm in Houston. As per ABC 13, narcotics-related violence has etched a deep and unfortunate mark on the Houston landscape. It's unsettling how frequently events reminiscent of the fateful Sharpstown incident continue to be reported. Drawing an alarming parallel, the station brought to attention a stark reminder that the nightmare of violence on Corporate Drive was lingering. Merely days before, on April 14, an innocent, unsuspecting boy was tragically caught in a hail of bullets from a driving vehicle. The Sharpstown debacle adds another dark chapter to the continuing saga of violence endemic to the area. Jeffrey Bierman, founder of The QuantGuy.com and chief market technician at TheoTrade.com, says that the market is overheated and overbought, but it very well could rise from here and re-touch record highs before a likely correction ahead. Bierman says technology and leisure are the areas that have made the market frothy and are overdue for a correction of 30 percent or more, and while oil and financials will help the overall market cushion the fall, Bierman believes utilities and pharmaceutical stocks will be areas to outperform while the market goes through 'unavoidable' pain. Brian Payne, chief strategist for private markets and alternatives at BCA Research talks about the wide-ranging opportunities in the private credit markets, and how senior loans and other private credit varieties can goose a portfolio's yield. Plus, forensic accountant Tracy Coenen identifies three common red flags pointing to signs of financial fraud in the latest installment of 'Find Me The Money,' and Eric Boughton, chief analyst at Matisse Capital, talks about closed-end funds, wide discounts and current buying opportunities in the Market Call.
On June 30, Brian Payne will finish a 23-year run as CEO and president of the Central Indiana Community Foundation and president of the Indianapolis Foundation. You can think of CICF as an umbrella organization that includes the Indianapolis Foundation and many other foundations and charitable funds that make nearly $100 million in grants every year to help not-for-profit groups in central Indiana. Over 23 years of Payne's leadership, the total assets of the CICF collective organization have grown from $338 million to more than $1 billion. For that alone, Payne is widely considered one of the most influential not-for-profit leaders in the city. But he also is the founder and primary creative force behind the $63 million Indianapolis Cultural Trail that loops downtown, links its six cultural districts and has become a major driver of economic development along its path. He further cemented his reputation for taking on big challenges when, in 2018, CICF formally changed its mission to support racial equity and inclusion and to dismantle institutional racism in central Indiana. At CICF, the new focus on fighting racism and creating opportunity for people of color led to changes big and small—from anti-racist training for its staff and cultivating new vendors to structural shifts that affected which programs and initiatives it decides to fund. The new focus was received positively by many and was criticized by others. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Payne explains why he has decided to retire from full-time work, what he plans to do next, and how CICF will change once he leaves. We also discuss the impact of the Cultural Trail, why CICF decided to change its mission in 2018 and the challenge of measuring its progress on a goal as large as dismantling institutional racism. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
Host Roukaya Ibrahim talks to BCA Research's Chief Private Markets & Alternatives strategist Brian Payne about the new BCA service. What makes BCA's Private Markets & Alternatives service unique? How does the service combine its macroeconomic outlook with a bottom-up analysis to assess the outlook for the various asset classes within PMA? And what are the forces that are contributing to a relatively appealing backdrop for Private Credit?

I really enjoy the idea of volunteer work in public spaces. For me, it feels like the basics of civilization. Essentially, I am talking about convincing people that no one needs to get paid to benefit the common good. This is a difficult task on a number of levels. First, people like to get paid. Second, there are city and county workers who get paid to maintain public spaces who may not like volunteers working in these same areas. Third, doing large scale projects to benefit the public good requires money, talent, time, and coordination. Fourth, if the project is going to endure, maintaining public space designed and created by volunteers requires long term support from people who are paid. This is even more difficult to achieve when doing landscape projects. About three years ago, my friend, Ben, and I had just completed a volunteer landscape project and had ambitions for a bigger endeavor. We needed someone who had control over substantial amounts of grass (aka green canvas) and an appreciation for native plants. We found our key supporter in Brian Payne, Director of the AirPark property on the north side of Columbus. In addition to the acre of land that he had already given us to create a meadow, he also has about a 2 mile People Trail going through his property. We developed a fundraising campaign for $15,000 to purchase plants, signage, raised beds, and a bench for a project that we dubbed, the “AirPark Pollinator Path.” In year one, we completed the meadow and transformed an 800 square foot AirPark entrance area into a native plant bed. We had only used about half of our money, so for spring 2023, we decided to take on over 7,000 square feet of space. It was much more than I had dreamed was possible when we started the fundraising campaign. By the end of April, 15 new beds were completed. Over the course of one of the most incredible weeks of volunteer coordination, led by multiple Sierra Club members, the sod was removed, mulch was added, plants were layed out, holes were dug, flowers and grasses found their new homes, and water topped off the effort. And then a glorious rain fell that Saturday evening after we were done. One of the new volunteers that came out mentioned that she is getting a Masters in Public Health. She shared with me that she is convinced that taking care of plants improves health. She wants to be able to explore that more in her education. I told her that I am very confident that horticulture therapy is an effective way of improving physical and mental health. In my opinion, on any list of options that a doctor, therapist, public health official, pastor, or concerned friend may give to someone in need of support for their mental health, working with plants should be top 5. I do have a broad definition for working with plants! There are lots of actions that I associate with horticulture therapy in my life. Planting, harvesting, cooking, floral arranging, smelling, weeding, watching the insect interactions, pruning, eating raw veggies straight from the ground, picking fruits from the tree, plucking berries from the bush, drying, saving seeds, composting, rubbing fingers on a mint leaf, waving my hand over the top of native grasses…. Imagine all of the things that you can do just on the other side of what you do not control - after germination, that beautiful creative act when the green shoot emerges from seed. That first glimpse of green has a name - radicle. It is in nurturing that life just one small step after the radicle moment that horticulture therapy emerges for me. So in these beds of columbine, butterfly weed, western sunflower, joe pye weed, penstemon, aster, coreopsis, iron weed, spiderwort, rattlesnake master, wild quinine, prairie drop seed, little blue stem, and coralberry, our friends the bees, butterflies, bugs, bats, and birds will thrive. The fauna will bask in this culinary floral delight. This becomes their ecological home.

PREACHER: Dr. Brian Payne 1 | Kingdom Prayer Is a Penitent Prayer (11:4a) 2 | Kingdom Living is a Forgiving Life (11:4b) Seven Untruths About Forgiveness: 1. Forgiveness is not forgetting. God doesn't forget. 2. Forgiving someone doesn't mean you no longer feel the pain of the offense. 3. Forgiving someone doesn't mean you stop longing for justice. 4. Forgiveness doesn't mean you make it easy for the offenders to hurt you again. 5. Forgiveness is rarely a one time event. 6. Forgiveness won't lead the offender to become more entrenched in his sin. 7. Forgiveness is not motivated primarily by self-interest. Seven Truths About Forgiveness: 1. God in Christ forgave us by absorbing in himself the destructive consequences of our sin against him. 2. God expects believers to forgive others in the way he forgave them (Ephesians 4:32). 3. God's forgiveness is conditional (Acts 20:21). 4. God forgave us in Christ by canceling the debt we owed him. 5. Forgiving others as God has forgiven us means we refuse to be vigilantes. 6. Forgiving others as God has forgiven us means that we do good rather than evil to them (Romans 12:17). 7. Forgiveness is an act of the will more than it is a feeling.

We have NEVER had an interview like this one!! Brian Payne is a champlain and talks about his journey to chaplaincy. He didn't originally intend to be a champain but quickly realized that it was the path he was supposed to take. Upon realization, he also discovered how much time it would take to become a chaplain. He talks about the difficulties of the job and the confirmation he has felt in his job. If you know little about chaplaincy, you are not alone! Before Brian came to Saints Unscripted, we were pretty clueless on the topic of chaplains. But after hearing about the work that Brian does, we are so grateful for chaplains! The job seems to be incredibly rewarding and equally difficult.
“They found the stone rolled away...They didn't know what to make of this.” Luke 24: 2,4 “They” were Mary Magdalene and other women, and they were confused about the tomb being empty. That was 2000 years ago, and many people are just as confused today in this information rich, but knowledge hungry world. On this weeks show, Kurt and Chad welcome Pastor and seminary professor Brian Payne to talk about the power of the resurrection and how it is still is impacting lives to this day. Has it impacted you? (This is a repeat episode - enjoy!)

Like a lot of kids that were first exposed to Phish during the second hiatus, B Payne had to wait until '09 to experience live Phish. His first show was at Alpine Valley in '09...and after that moment he was in for life. Brian talked about the importance of meeting new people and expanding friend groups through seeing Phish. He also shared some fun stories from the road. To be on a future episode shoot an email to sttf.weareeverywhere@gmail.com
