What should a preacher do when the Bible addresses a culturally explosive issue? Can a sermon be useful but insufficiently centred on Christ? How much of the preacher's own life belongs in the pulpit—and what happens after you preach a sermon that simply did not work?In episode 450 of the Expositors Collective Podcast, Mike Neglia moderates a lively preaching Q&A with Dr Alan Stoddard, Cody King, Bryan Stupar and Dr Danny Hyde, recorded at the Expositors Collective training event at Reliance Church in Temecula, California. The panel begins with the challenge of preaching controversial Bible passages faithfully. How can pastors refuse to avoid difficult texts without chasing viral moments, adding needless offence or apologising for Scripture before they have explained it?From there, the conversation turns to Christ-centred preaching. The panel considers whether moral instruction and practical advice have a place in sermons, why application must flow from the gospel, and how preaching can leave people under condemnation rather than bringing them to the grace and transforming power of Christ. They also offer candid counsel about personal testimony. Stories can establish trust and illuminate a passage, but they can also make the preacher the hero, manipulate emotions, embarrass family members or turn the pulpit into a therapy session. Finally, the panel recommends formative books and Bible-study tools, explains how prayer should run through the entire sermon process, and answers an honest question every preacher eventually asks: What do I do after preaching a bad sermon? This warm, practical and sometimes very funny discussion offers encouragement for pastors, Bible teachers and emerging preachers seeking to handle God's Word with courage, humility and faithfulness.Topics include:• Preaching culturally charged and controversial passages• Avoiding cowardice, unnecessary offence and political tribalism• Moralistic sermons and Christ-centred application• Conviction, condemnation and the transforming power of the gospel• Using testimony without making the preacher the hero• Personal illustrations, emotional manipulation and protecting your family• Essential books and Bible-study resources• Prayer throughout sermon preparation and delivery• Learning from a disappointing sermon• Trusting the Holy Spirit when preaching feels weakResources mentioned:Blue Letter Biblehttps://www.blueletterbible.org/Biblical Preaching — Haddon W. Can a sermon be biblically accurate, practically helpful, and still miss the point? At an Expositors Collective training event at Reliance Church in Temecula, California, Cody King and Mike Neglia conducted a revealing experiment: two different sermons from the same passage, Ruth chapter 2.Before this recording, Cody intentionally delivered a moralistic sermon focused on Ruth's work ethic and Boaz's integrity. It included true observations and practical applications—but Jesus remained largely at the margins. The recording begins with Mike preaching Ruth 2 through a redemptive lens. Ruth is not merely a diligent worker, but an empty-handed outsider who is seen and welcomed. Boaz is more than a model employer; he is a redeemer whose generosity points beyond himself to Jesus Christ, our true and greater Redeemer.Cody then invites the audience to compare the two approaches. Their responses expose the episode's central insight: everything in a sermon can be true without being true enough. A message may communicate accurate information and sound advice while failing to lead people to the grace, beauty, necessity, and sufficiency of Jesus.Cody explains what Christ-centred preaching means, why Jesus is the true hero of Scripture, and how moralistic preaching can quietly replace the gospel with self-improvement. He offers practical guidance for connecting individual passages to the Bible's grand story of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation—without forcing allegory or artificially inserting Jesus into the text. This episode will help pastors and Bible teachers distinguish moral instruction from gospel proclamation, honour authorial intent, preach Christian obedience as the fruit of grace rather than the price of acceptance, and show how Scripture finds its fulfilment in Christ. In this episode:• Two contrasting sermons from Ruth 2• How a sermon can be accurate but incomplete• Why mentioning Jesus is not the same as making Jesus central• Moralistic preaching and Christianised self-improvement• Seeing Christ in Scripture without forcing allegory• The Bible as one grand redemptive story• The preacher as a steward of God's mysteries• Three questions for preparing a Christ-centred sermonThree questions for sermon preparation:Where does this text fit within redemptive history? What problem does this text reveal that Jesus alone can solve? How does the gospel empower and transform our response?Key Scriptures:Ruth 2John 5:39Luke 24:25–271 Corinthians 2:1–21 Corinthians 4:1–22 Corinthians 4:5About Cody KingCody King is a Bible teacher, church planter, and assistant pastor at Reliance Church in Temecula, California. In a society where quick fixes and instant gratification dominate, are we settling for the same thing in our approach to sermons? In this episode, Pastor Mike Chaddick invites us to move beyond “fast food preaching” toward preparing and serving meals that are both desirable and deeply nourishing.Recorded live at the Expositors Collective training event in Pleasanton, CA (May 2024), Mike unpacks the inductive Bible study method through its three steps: observation, interpretation, and application. He shows how careful attention to language, grammar, genre, and historical setting equips preachers and Bible teachers to handle the text responsibly and preach with gospel-centred conviction.Listeners will also benefit from Mike's practical encouragement to use multiple translations, ask questions on behalf of their audience, and keep the good news of Jesus at the heart of every message. Whether you're preparing your first Bible study or refining your preaching after decades of experience, this session offers a simple yet profound roadmap for teaching God's Word faithfully.About Mike ChaddickPastor Mike Chaddick is the senior pastor of Image Church in San Juan Capistrano, CA, and a regular contributor to the live radio show Pastors Perspective on KWAVE 107.9FM. Raised as a pastor's kid in the Calvary Chapel movement, Mike had a powerful conversion experience after years of drifting from his faith. With ministerial degrees from Vanguard University, Veritas Evangelical Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary, he brings both theological depth and pastoral warmth to his ministry. Mike is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree and is passionate about writing, fitness, and spending time with his wife, Beth, and their six children.Recommended Episodes:Treat Your Text Like a Crime Scene: https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/episode-88-treat-your-text-like-a-crime-scene-bonus-episodeHow to Interpret and Apply the Bible (with Cody King): https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/how-to-interpret-and-apply-the-bible-cody-kingFor information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Our Edgewood campus pastor, Cody King, examines John 10, where Jesus declares, "I am the door, illustrating His role as the means with which we come out of the "sheepfold of this world" and into the "true flock" for salvation and abundant life. It contrasts Jesus with false leaders who mislead. Believers are encouraged to recognize His voice, follow His guidance, and find spiritual nourishment and protection in Him. "We fear men so much because we fear God so little. One fear cures the other." This quotation from Puritan preacher William Gurnall drastically impacted Jeffrey Arthurs when he heard it quoted by one of his students. In this encouraging conversation with Mike, Dr Arthurs speaks candidly about overcoming the fear of man, the power of specificity and the importance of knowing the cultural context both of the passage being preached, and the lives of the congregation. They also speak about Haddon Robinson's Subject/Complement distinction, feedforward vs feedback, the hidden hope in lament, and variety in literary genres and their impact on our preaching styles and so much more!
