Leah Weinberg is a perfect blend of support for event professionals being an author, a recovering event planner, and an attorney. In this episode, we'll discuss the feelings and emotions that come with an event planner's job and how to walk through them. Episode HighlightsWhen you can think through some of the big things that go wrong then you are prepared for the small things that come up.Leah's book, The Wedding Rollercoaster, is all about keeping your relationship intact through the ups and downs. What something seems to be like on the surface, isn't what it is always about. There is always something beneath the surface that underlines someone's behavior. We should be proactive about bringing up any challenges in the planning process first. Asking questions and having a conversation while planning builds trust with customers. What people say as well as what people do not say can help you when identifying how to respond to your clients. Your branding messaging and voice should portray the type of planner you are so that customers are aware of who you are as a planning professional. Everyone is truly different and meant to be working with different people. In situations that are high-touch many times, practice makes perfect. Practice how you respond to customers so that it becomes easier for you to respond to requests.Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy by not having the right systems and processes in place. If you aren't strong in an area, find someone or a tool that is so that you can have a strong front.Leah's 3-step process for handling the stress or emotional responses at an event. 1) Take the emotional response in nicely. 2) Think through it logically. 3) Check in with yourself emotionally to see how you are feeling.Lastly, after moving through this process, we have to either take responsibility or let it go and move forward.Don't isolate yourself when dealing with difficult customers. Have a team, community, or accountability partner to help you get yourself through trying times. This episode is full of reflections and learning with our guest, Leah Weinberg, who joined us to talk about self-awareness and living in the moment. Have you ever stopped whatever it is you're doing and just observed? Like really looking at your surroundings, feeling the wind blow into your face, savoring the feel of the keyboard on your fingertips. No? Well, you should! Don't let every moment in your life pass by in a blur and leave you thinking, “Where has all that time gone?” In this episode, we'll be talking about exactly how to make the most out of every moment in your life. We're joined by our lovely guest from Color Pop Events, Leah Weinberg, as we navigate self-awareness and how to harness it to beat the burnout monster. In this episode, you'll learn: A mantra to remind yourself to be in the present. Why self-awareness is the first step. How to ignore what other people are doing. You are uniquely you. Ways to be mindful of hospitality. How to surround yourself with other business owners. Why to put systems and processes in place from the beginning. To see more of Leah's works and what she does, visit her website. Here's a sneak peek of the episode: [1:59] That's not where self development happens. That's not where growth happens. You need to live in the present moment. I encourage you to take up a meditation practice to do that. [11:00] The goal is to realize that you're gonna have a long term relationship with burnout. And it's just about trying to stay in balance as long as possible and giving yourself grace. [15:28] I love that just self awareness and being like, “okay, I'm not a PMS thing. I'm burned out.” Like for me PMS and burnout have a very similar sense of you're tired and cranky. [18:44] My first tip is to have systems and processes in place from the beginning. And when you're first starting out, things like that aren't necessarily on your mind. And a time will come when you're going to need it. [19:39] You don't have to have a formal operating manual but essentially, you should have enough documentation that you could hand somebody this packet of information and they would like you to franchise your business essentially, like think about your systems and processes. [22:59] So number two is to surround yourself with other business owners. The people, your community, who you surround yourself with is just so incredibly important. Connect with me! Big Takeaways * Planners love when you don't have a wedding party! It really makes things so much easier. This is not to say you can't have, but don't feel weird about the decision to not. * When you are picking members of the wedding party: - Don't do things out of obligation * It is important to consider how you are involving meaningful people in your wedding, and that might not be as a member of the party * Being a wedding party is a huge commitment, consider that as well. It is not personal if someone cannot show up or afford to dive in to the more in-depth role * Tell the people you are asking to be in the party exactly what their expectations will be up front. And go from there. Figure out your deal breakers. * How do the people you are considering make you feel? * Someone telling you they can't or do not want to be in your wedding party should be okay. It's okay to be sad and disappointed, but you must respect their decision. * Even if you don't have a wedding party, you can still incorporate your friends on the day of. I.e., makeup and mimosas! Firing a wedding party member * No matter what has happened, as the Marry-er, what will give you the most peace and zen for your wedding day? * Weigh the positivity vs the negativity. Ultimately you want your wedding day to bring you joy and celebration * Tell your wedding party about how much you love your vendors and planners. It's more common than it should be that a wedding party is rude to the planner and that just makes it harder on everyone. Best Practices for Looks: * Give your wedding party as much detail and specificity as possible, especially if there is not one type of dress * There are brands that do a variety of colors/styles. Then you can give more specific parameters for everyone. * Do not dictate the hair style. It is very old school and does not always look very good. * You can set loose parameters for hair and makeup, but gone are the days of everyone looking the exact same. * Being too particular about what you want can be unintentionally offensive. People's style can * be a very personal thing. In this episode, I’m shaking things up a bit and have not just one, but two guests! Leah Weinberg, the founder of Color Pop Events is an event and wedding planner based in New York City and Debbie Orwat is a former planner and venue owner, and currently runs Planner’s Lounge - an online resource for wedding and event planners. I asked them on to show to take a walk down memory lane with me about how they each got started and what obstacles they faced in doing so. As you’ll hear, both ladies have a wealth of knowledge to share. Even if wedding and event planning isn’t your niche, don’t dismiss this episode. You just might find a little nugget here that you can apply to your own business and industry! To learn more and get the show notes, visit: www.annettestepanian.com/officetalk
