This week's Deadpod takes us back to Irvine California for the second set of the show from April 23, 1988. This second set is well-executed, tight yet containing several delightful spacey interludes. The opening 'Playin In the Band', while short, is quite interesting and gives way to an excellent 'Crazy Fingers'. That leads into 'Uncle John's Band', afterwards the band goes into a rather extended Drums and Space, whcih are quite high powered and interesting.  Post-Drums highlights include a powerful 'Going Down the Road' and an  excellent 'Dear Mr. Fantasy> Hey Jude reprise'. Jerry's ballad slot gives us a sweet 'Stella Blue' and they close the set with a nice 'Lovelight'. A 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' encore ends the festivities.    Grateful Dead Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre Irvine , CA 4/23/1988 - Saturday Two     Playing In The Band [7:38] > Crazy Fingers [8:04] > Uncle John's Band [8:39] > Drums [10:05] > Space [13:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:02] > I Need A Miracle [3:32] > Dear Mr. Fantasy [5:14] > Hey Jude Reprise [1:27] > Stella Blue [8:07] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:32] Encore     Knockin' On Heaven's Door   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050324.mp3   Sorry - no 'The Race is On' this year, but nevertheless I hope you have a wonderful Derby weekend .. This week's Deadpod returns for the second set of the band's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on December 27th, 1989.  Clarence Clemmons makes a surprise appearance on the opening Iko, Iko and adds a great touch here as the band gets the crowd wound up for what is a fine second set. A spacey 'Playin' In the Band' follows - with some extraterrestrial exploration before going into a lovely 'Crazy Fingers'. 'Uncle John's Band' caps off the pre-drums set. The post-drums is highlighted by a truly wonderful 'Morning Dew'.. there was an issue with Jerry's sound at the end but that really doesn't detract from what is a great version.  The boys then surprise the crowd with a double encore -'Johnny B. This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's performance on April 15, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois.  The band is tight throughout on this night, starting from the opening Bucket, which goes into a very nice 'Crazy Fingers'. Garcia gives a lovely solo here, and it sets the mood for a reflective 'Looks Like Rain' which follows and on which Weir provides a lovely rendition. 'Terrapin Station' follows, and the boys rev this one up as that train pulls into the station! Drums and Space follows (probably with a bit of a cut somewhere here), followed by a slinkly 'Other One'. Bobby follows that with 'I Need a Miracle' which seems a bit out of place but Brent follows with the 'Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude' combo which was performed quite often during this period. The 'Lovelight' that follows is a perfect counter coming out of that.  Jerry gives the crowd a wonderful encore with 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' to close the evening.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Grateful Dead Rosemont Horizon Chicago , IL 4/15/1988 - Friday Two     Hell In A Bucket [6:28] > Crazy Fingers [8:05] > Looks Like Rain [8:28] > Terrapin Station [11:31] > Drums [2:15#] > Space [#7:13]> The Other One [5:01] > I Need A Miracle [3:19] > Dear Mr. Fantasy [4:28] > Hey Jude [2:05] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:11] Encore     Knockin' On Heaven's Door [7:37]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042823.mp3  Thanks for your kind support.

Here's the second set from the band's performance at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on June 23, 1990.  A rather slow and dreamy 'Eyes of the World' leads us into a great 'Looks Like Rain', Bobby really does it justice here. 'Crazy Fingers' follows and while Jerry's voice is a bit craggy here its still, for me, a pleasure to hear. The band busts it out on the following 'Playin' In the Band' which opens up beautifully into 'Uncle John's Band', then returns for a full-blown 'Playin' Reprise'.  'The Wheel' flows out of space, then after a rocking 'Miracle', Jerry commands us with a powerful 'Morning Dew'.  Being Saturday the obligatory "One More Saturday Night' gets the crowd spinning as the band heads for the exits..    Grateful Dead Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon Eugene, OR 6/23/1990 - Saturday Two Eyes Of The World [15:24] > Looks Like Rain [8:35] > Crazy Fingers [8:24] > Playing In The Band [10:57] > Uncle John's Band % [9:02] > Playing Reprise [2:11] > Drums [8:03] > Space [9:18] > The Wheel [5:32] > I Need A Miracle [5:25] > Morning Dew [10:50] Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:59]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070822.mp3  Thank you for your kind support, and keep a light in your heart during these dark days.

I'm going to shuffle the deck a little bit and bring you a real treat, a show from the fall of 1976. This comes to us from September 30, 1976 at Mershon Auditorium at The Ohio State University. This special request from a friend of the Deadpod features a fantastic first set. The opening 'Music Never Stopped' is quite unique - and features some wonderful playing by Garcia in the cresendo leading into a sweet 'Sugaree'.  'Looks Like Rain' has a nice interplay between Bob and Donna, and 'El Paso' has a nice galloping tempo thanks to Phil. The real fireworks come with the fabulous 'Crazy Fingers' that follows.. to me the highlight of the set, although some would argue that the set closing 'Scarlet Begonias' deserves those accolades.. I'll let you decide ;)      Grateful Dead Mershon Auditorium - Ohio State University Columbus, OH 9/30/76 - Thursday One     The Music Never Stopped [5:56] Sugaree [9:44]   New Minglewood Blues [4:30]   Ramble On Rose [7:19] Looks Like Rain [6:02]   Peggy-O [8:25]   El Paso [4:10] Crazy Fingers [15:02] > It's All Over Now [5:14]   Scarlet Begonias [10:14]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051421.mp3

This week's Deadpod brings us the second set of the band's fine performance at Cal Expo on May 4, 1991. They continue what has been a solid show, opening with the perhaps odd choice of 'Victim or the Crime'. That darkness has to give however as they then move onto a wonderful 'Crazy Fingers' and 'Playin In the Band'. It sounds for a bit at the end of the latter that they will move into Drums, but Jerry and Phil instead turn the sound around to a nice version of  'Uncle John's Band'.  Post-drums features a strong 'Miracle' into a fine version of 'Standing on the Moon'. I find this to be a great version of this powerful tune, as Garcia and company show how they've infused this song with the power and passion that makes it one of the great later day ballads in their repertoire.  Being Saturday, they then close the set with 'One More Saturday Night' and return with a 'Touch' encore.  I think its a fine set and hope you enjoy it as well.  Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheatre Sacramento, CA  5/4/91 - Saturday Two     Victim Or The Crime ; Crazy Fingers ; Playing In The Band ; Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > Standing On The Moon ; One More Saturday Night Encore     Touch Of Grey  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050721.mp3    'oh oh what I want to know, where does the time go?"   thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod

Freshly back from hiatus, the Grateful Dead delivered the potent yet polarizing Blues for Allah in September 1975. Containing soon-to-be set staples like “Help on the Way,” Slipknot,” Frankin’s Tower,” “Crazy Fingers,” and “The Music Never Stopped,” Blues for Allah has all the hallmarks of a classic Dead record. Still, it’s hard to make the case that these versions are definitive, especially with so many incredible live takes yet to come. In some ways, Blues for Allah is like software in beta—absolutely necessary to future iterations, but still a little buggy. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth revisiting or checking out for the first time. Stately, intoxicating, and occasionally impenetrable, this is a record that demands your full attention. Happy Autumnal Equinox!  While it still feels like summer here, we have a wonderful show from 1982 to celebrate the arrival of Autumn. This comes to us from September 21st, 1982 at Madison Square Garden, N.Y., N.Y. This first set  has been called the best of the year and while I'm not quite certain I'm willing to crown it that I will say I found it very enjoyable and hope you do as well. This is one of those shows where they delighted the crowd with an unusual opening.. a wonderful Playin' in the Band. Right away you are swept up with Garcia's fluid playing.. then to add to our delight a delicious Crazy Fingers follows. The rest of the set follows a more traditional pattern but is highlighted by a early West LA Fadeaway, a great Looks Like Rain (Garcia's second lead here is sweet) and a great China-Rider closer.. I also admit a fondness for Brent's playing on this set which is easily heard.      Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/21/82 - Tuesday One Playing In The Band [9:56] > Crazy Fingers [9:47] > Me And My Uncle [2:48] > Big River [5:52] ; West L.A. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Dead's performance at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse NY on September 24th, 1982. This is quite a fine set, and opens with an unusual Brent opener - Far From Me.. always a song I enjoy hearing. They follow that up with a very well executed Playin' In The Band->Crazy Fingers, and Jerry does some fine work on that latter number. Weir's new song, Throwin' Stones, follows and leads into Drums and Space but they come out of that with an unusual Iko, Iko. Truckin' as always provides Garcia a nice jamming platform and he accelerates out of that into 'Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad' and then 'Black Peter'... the band then brings everyone back to earth with a nice Around and Around and a Sugar Magnolia to close the set. Phil pranks Weir by bringing out a woman from backstage and introducing her as Weir's wife of 5 years, before the Brokedown Palace encore, so you know they were loose and having fun!   Carrier Dome (Syracuse U), Syracuse, NY (9/24/82) Set 2: Far From Me Playin' in the Band Crazy Fingers Throwin' Stones drums Iko Iko Truckin' Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad Black Peter Around and Around Sugar Magnolia Brokedown Palace   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100314.mp3   Finally as always, my gratitude goes out to those of you able to support the Deadpod and keep us on track.. love and peace to all of you..

This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's return to the stage in 1976. I really like how they have changed up the set list here, and they start out with the debut performance of Samson and Delilah.  A nice, very new Crazy Fingers goes into a haunting Wharf Rat. Let It Grow follows and this second set spot suits the song in that the musicians have a chance to explore some new ground here. Roses comes out of drums and then (!) Around and Around. For me the highlight of this set follows, a slower more precise perhaps,  Help->Slip->Frank.. the jamming on this one is superb and its so easy to get lost in.. Saturday night ends the set and they return for an  unusual Wheel encore..        Paramount Theatre, Portland, Ore. Great set list, the High Time and Music Never Stopped are very good, but from Crazy Fingers on its flat-out cranked. Dancin' is wonderful, but the 14 minute Slipknot is spine tingling. Hope you aren't wore out on mid 70s Dead because this is a helluva show. I hope you enjoy it.. This week's second set from May 26th, 1993 features believe it or not probably the finest version of Playin' in the late 90s era. This is a real scorcher and the drums in the middle of the sandwich is very tasty as well.. Crazy Fingers is also quite nice and I'm a fan of almost any China Dolls... I hope you'll give this one a listen I am sure you won't regret it.. This week we'll hear the second set of this beautiful audience recording of the Dead at the Frost, 10/10/86. This set starts off with a beautiful Playin, then Jerry really tears up Crazy Fingers. I'm also quite partial to the NFA->Black Peter. The fact that they do a double encore is an indication, I think, that they were happy with their performance as well....Grateful Dead Frost Amphitheatre - Stanford University Palo Alto, CA 10/10/82 - SundayPlaying In The Band > Crazy Fingers > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Touch Of Grey > Drums > Space > The Wheel > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away > Black Peter > Sugar MagnoliaEncore (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction [6:12] > It's All Over Now, Baby BlueYou can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod042508.mp3All the best friends.. thanks for listening!

This week a Christmas time show in its entirety for your enjoyment.. This show features a well played first set highlighted perhaps by Phil's "Tom Thumb" and a great Bird Song.. The second set features a wonderful Iko, Iko to open (with Clarence Clemmons on sax) leading into a great Playin'->Crazy Fingers->Uncle John's Band.. The double encore is also quite satisfying.
