Welcome To Horror Presents: “The We Have Been Watching Invasion of Earth”. It's time for our semi-regular round up of all the entertainments we've been sticking into our brains for the past few weeks (and no laughing at the word “semi” please, we're all grown ups). This time round there's quite an international flavour as we discuss Soviet masterpiece “Viy” (1967); 2 movies from South Korea in modern classic “Train to Busan” (2016) and the “Tucker & Dale…” reimagining “Handsome Guys” (2024); fantastic Norwegian comedy “Troll Hunter” (2010); and the breathtaking 1922 Danish/Swedish silent documentary “Häxan” (and it's William Burroughs narrated 1968 version, “Witchcraft Through the Ages”). We also cover hit podcast “Broken Veil” (2025), 1982's “The Slumber Party Massacre”; “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” and “The Book of the Witch” (both 2024). Plus there are honourable mentions for “Battle Beyond the Stars”; and the anthology shows “Tales of Unease” and “Armchair Thriller”. There should be no need to prep for this ep, but listeners beware, as here be (possible) spoilers and (definite) swearing. Join us!
The American Kennel Club, or AKC, has named another kind of dog to its registry. Say hello to the Danish-Swedish farmdog. Or maybe say "hej," the word for hello in Swedish and Danish. AKC officials announced the addition to its list on January 2. The recognition means the breed now may compete for many best in show prizes. It also will probably create wider interest in the small, lively dogs. Fans of the breed are happy for the honor, but some also worry about the effect increased attention will have on the dog. Carey Segebart is one of the people who worked to get Danish-Swedish farmdogs recognized by the AKC. "We're excited about it. We're looking forward to it," she said. She plans to show one of her own at a dog show this month near her home in the American state of Iowa. Still, she thinks more attention can have both good and bad results for the breed. "We don't want the breed to just explode too quickly," she said. The Danish-Swedish Farmdog Club of America says the breed, DSF for short, goes back centuries in parts of what are now Denmark, southern Sweden and some other European countries. They're interesting, fun little dogs," said Segebart, who has owned them since 2011 and is the club's incoming president. She said they will try anything and “succeed at most everything." “它们是有趣、有趣的小狗,”Segebart 说,他自 2011 年以来一直拥有它们,也是俱乐部即将上任的主席。她说他们会尝试任何事情,并且“几乎一切都会成功”。 In their homelands, the dogs' main job was to control small animals called rodents. However, they also can herd, act as watchdogs and be playful with children. The club says some Danish-Swedish farmdogs have even performed in circuses. 在它们的家乡,狗的主要工作是控制称为啮齿动物的小动物。然而,它们也可以放牧、充当看门狗并与孩子们玩耍。该俱乐部表示,一些丹麦瑞典混血的农场狗甚至曾在马戏团表演。 After Denmark and Sweden became more developed in the 20th century, DSF fans decided to make the breed official in both nations. Kennel clubs there began registering the breed in 1987. 20 世纪丹麦和瑞典变得更加发达后,DSF 爱好者决定在这两个国家正式认定该品种。那里的养犬俱乐部于 1987 年开始注册该品种。 In the United States, many of the about 350 Danish-Swedish farmdogs nationwide already compete in agility, obedience or other sports that are open to all dogs, including mixed breeds. 在美国,全国约 350 只丹麦瑞典混血农场犬中的许多已经参加了敏捷性、服从性或其他对所有狗(包括混种狗)开放的运动项目。 Until now, the dogs could not enter the traditional breed-by-breed judging that leads to best in show prizes at major dog shows. They may appear later this year at two major televised events, the National Dog Show and the AKC National Championship. 到目前为止,这些狗还无法进入传统的逐品种评审,从而在大型犬展上获得最佳表演奖。它们可能会在今年晚些时候出现在两项主要的电视赛事中:全国犬展和 AKC 全国锦标赛。 The Danish-Swedish farmdog is the AKC's 202nd breed and "a wonderful addition to a family that is able to provide it with the exercise and mental stimulation that it needs," said the AKC's Gina DiNardo. 丹麦-瑞典农场犬是 AKC 的第 202 个品种,AKC 的吉娜·迪纳尔多 (Gina DiNardo) 表示,“它是家庭的绝妙补充,能够为它提供所需的运动和精神刺激”。Danish-Swedish farmdog lovers talked for several years about whether they should try to get AKC recognition and the attention that is likely to come with it, Segebart said. The number of people wanting to buy a young farmdog, or puppy, has grown quickly over the last ten years. The wait for a DSF puppy is usually a year or more, she said. Segebart 说,丹麦和瑞典的农场狗爱好者多年来一直在讨论他们是否应该尝试获得 AKC 的认可以及可能随之而来的关注。过去十年里,想要购买年轻农场狗或小狗的人数迅速增加。她说,等待 DSF 小狗的时间通常是一年或更长时间。 Fans of the breed worry that its appealing, relatively easy-care nature could make it quickly become too popular for its own good. They are not the first to worry. Similar concerns surround the French bulldog, which the AKC now says is the most popular breed in the country. Breeding for desired qualities has led to many health problems for the dogs. 该品种的粉丝担心,它的吸引力和相对容易照顾的性质可能会使其很快变得太受欢迎,而不利于其自身的利益。他们并不是第一个担心的人。类似的担忧也围绕着法国斗牛犬,AKC 现在表示法国斗牛犬是该国最受欢迎的品种。为了获得所需的品质而进行的繁殖导致了狗的许多健康问题。

In the second half of today's episode, we'll be reviewing The Edge of Heaven from 2007, directed by Fatih Akim. It's a film entirely about missed connections that will frustrate you, but eventually you manage to settle in and accept what happens (or doesn't). COMING ATTRACTIONS: Put on your rented tuxedo, because we're going to a couple of weddings. First, from 2001, it's Monsoon Wedding, an Indian comedy-drama directed by Mira Nair. Although it takes place in India, you'll recognize most of the drama that happens when extended families find themselves in one place. From there we're off to Denmark and 2007's After the Wedding, a 2006 Danish-Swedish drama directed by Susanne Bier. It's a complex story about people with complex motivations, and the people affected by them. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

Throughout history, women have been fearlessly taking up arms and waging war, but the stories of female fighters tend to be forgotten. That is changing, with more female warriors taking centre stage in films and TV series. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women committed to bringing these stories into the limelight. Cathy Schulman is an Academy award winning producer, showrunner and screenwriter. She's one of the producers of The Woman King, starring another Oscar winner, actor Viola Davis, and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The movie is set in West Africa in 1823 and tells the story of the Agojie, an all-female army that protected the Dahomey Kingdom. Caroline Henderson is a Danish-Swedish singer and actor. After winning eight Danish Music Awards and working in theatre productions across Europe, Caroline now stars in the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla as Jarl Haakon, the ruler of the fictional town of Kattegat. In real life, Caroline is a Knight of Dannebrog, a title she received from Queen Margarethe II of Denmark in 2010. Produced by Alice Gioia (Image: (L) Cathy Schulman, credit Getty. There have been violent clashes in multiple cities in Sweden over rallies by anti-Islam group Hard Line, led by the Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan. Meanwhile Sweden and Finland are pushing to join NATO in the wake of the Russia/Ukraine war, with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson saying Sweden had to be “prepared for all kinds of actions from Russia.”
Sweden has experienced days of violent protests against a far-right group. Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan's anti-Islam party Hard Line says it will burn copies of the Quran as part of a tour of cities with large immigrant populations. Sweden has traditionally welcomed refugees, taking in Jews during WW2, Iranians fleeing the revolution, and a large number of people from the former Yugoslavia. But is that approach changing? Per capita Sweden accepted more refugees from the war in Syria than any other EU country. But after the arrival of more than 160,000 refugees in 2015 alone, government policy began to evolve – seeing the introduction of border checks, a reduction in access to permanent residency, and more stringent rules around family reunions. Voters increasingly complain that core government services like health and education are struggling to cope and many migrants still find it hard to secure jobs. The far-right party Sweden Democrats has seen a surge in support and is now the third most popular party nationally. So is Sweden changing? Ritula Shah is joined by a panel of expert guests. Producers: Ellen Otzen and Paul Schuster.

Since 1990s, Nordic crime fiction has been a significant sub-genre within the global genre of crime fiction. Usually characterised by social realism, gloomy locations and morose detectives, crime novels and TV series from across the Nordic region provide puzzling mysteries and thrilling stories that use the crime plot to investigate the state of justice, equality, vulnerability and current debates specific to the Nordic welfare societies. The genre includes modern TV classics such as the Danish Forbrydelsen (The Killing, 2007-2012), the Danish/Swedish co-production Bron/Broen (The Bridge, 2011-2018) and global bestsellers by the Norwegian Jo Nesbø and the Swede Stieg Larsson, but it also includes dark and critical images of the underbelly of the Nordic states, which extend further back in history, even to literary works from the nineteenth century. Today on the show we have the legendary Linda Segar. Linda was one of my first ever interviews back when I launched Indie Film Hustle and her episode is by far one of the most popular ever. Here’s some info on our lovely guest. In 1981, Linda Seger created and defined the career of Script Consultant. She based her business on a method for analyzing scripts that she had developed for her doctoral dissertation project. Since then, she has consulted on over 2,000 scripts including over 50 produced feature films and over 35 produced television projects. Linda was the consultant for Peter Jackson’s breakthrough film, Brain Dead and for Roland Emmerich’s breakthrough film, Universal Soldier. Other clients include Ray Bradbury who said, “Linda’s technique is a light to see by,” William Kelley, Linda Lavin, and production companies, film studios, producers, directors, and writers from over 33 countries. Having authored nine books on scriptwriting, including the best selling Making A Good Script Great, Linda is one of the most prolific writers in her field. Here new book The Collaborative Art of Filmmaking: From Script to Screen explores what goes into the making of Hollywood’s greatest motion pictures. Join veteran script consultant Linda Seger as she examines contemporary and classic screenplays on their perilous journey from script to screen. This fully revised and updated edition includes interviews with over 80 well-known artists in their fields including writers, producers, directors, actors, editors, composers, and production designers. Their discussions about the art and craft of filmmaking – including how and why they make their decisions – provides filmmaking and screenwriting students and professionals with the ultimate guide to creating the best possible “blueprint” for a film and to also fully understand the artistic and technical decisions being made by all those involved in the process.

First episode of a new show on The Lake called 'Søens Folk' – a Danish expression for 'sailors', which also translates directly as 'the people of the lake'. A show where we visit and broadcast live from the home of a person who presents us with some music and sounds they find interesting. We listen to it, talk about it, and the sounds will afterwards become part of The Lake's random flow. This time we're visiting artist and writer Henning Lundkvist, who, apart from living there, also runs the exhibition space Ch'ien Chien in his apartment in Copenhagen. This show is in Danish/Swedish – other upcoming episode will be in English. Projektet er støttet af Dansk Komponist Forenings Produktionspulje, DJBFA's Produktionspulje og Kodas Kulturelle Midler. Tak for støtten!
