The Catholic Church in England and Wales has a new leader - Richard Moth has been named as the new Archbishop of Westminster, succeeding Cardinal Vincent Nichols who turned 80 last month. We hear from Ruth Gledhill, Assistant Editor at the Catholic weekly The Tablet. A new song from the singer-songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg is called "Put Christ back into Christmas". The title is a reference to the current campaign by the far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Last weekend we reported on the Robinson-inspired carol service in London; Billy Bragg turned out for a rival carol service orgainsed by Stand up to Racism. He explains why. In this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with John Clifton about his experiences as a Salvation Army leader among people in the margins. In a sense, this is what you would expect from a Salvation Army officer. But give this a careful listen: John is also a deeply informed thinker and theologian with vital insights for the church today. In Christian circles lately there is much being said and written about two contrasting conversations: the quiet revival of young adults coming to certain kinds of churches, and the confusion and fear surrounding the recent conversions of controversial figures like Tommy Robinson and others at the margins—people who have had little to do with church and Christian life. John has important things to say about what is happening here and about why we should listen to what the Spirit is saying from the culture to the churches. John calls the church to return to its working-class roots, for relational spaces where Christ is encountered in the powerless, for the fostering of solidarity, and for local economic renewal.Captain John Clifton is a Salvation Army officer, ordained minister, and theologian based in North Shields, North East England. He serves as the Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army's North East Division, overseeing operations across the region, focusing on spiritual guidance, community outreach, and social services. His work emphasizes the Church's engagement in public life and society, particularly supporting communities affected by debt, hunger, homelessness, and unemployment. He collaborates on initiatives for justice, reconciliation, and empowering local leadership through broad-based community organizing. Academically, John researches systematic theology, exploring the transformative power of compassionate acts and social encounters. His doctoral thesis was titled “Producing Christ in the World: a study of Christian action in terms of the Homeless Man as a Christological paradigm of powerlessness.” He writes on faith, theology, and faithful action via his Substack, Christ in the Margins, and has previously led Salvation Army corps in places like Ilford (East London) and Blackpool (North West England). The youngest son of General Shaw Clifton, John has made a lifelong commitment to the Salvation Army and lives in North Shields near Newcastle with his wife Naomi and their young family. In September the ‘Unite the Kingdom' rally, organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, drew many thousands of people to London. Advertised as the UK's biggest ‘Free Speech Festival', speakers made calls to reaffirm Britain's Christian foundations. Many held wooden crosses and flags with Christian slogans, and the crowds were led in reciting the Lord's Prayer. In response to the march, a group of Church of England bishops and senior clergy joined leaders from across denominations to write a letter condemning the “co-opting or corrupting” of the Christian faith and symbols to exclude others. The letter said that ‘communities felt anxious, unsettled and even threatened by aspects of the march.'Meanwhile operation ‘Raise the Colours', a campaign to cover Britain in flags, has seen St. George's flags appear on lamp posts across England. Some see flying the flag as patriotism, while others are concerned and say the movement is underpinned by far-right nationalists.Today we'll explore the issues. Why is it different to fly a Welsh Flag or a St. George's Cross? What is the difference between patriotism and nationalism? In what way was the ‘Unite the Kingdom' march unsettling and exclusionary to others? Delyth Liddell is joined by Reverend Rhys Llwyd, leader of a Welsh speaking Baptist Church in Caernarfon, North Wales. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show,  there's enthusiasm for Christian revivals and Judeo-Christian values, but there are those exploiting faith to divide Jews and Christians, including a blood libel invoked by Tucker Carlson during the Charlie Kirk memorial service.  People like Carlson, Candace Owens, Steve Bannon and others promote Jew hatred, aligning with Marxists, Islamists, and neo-Nazis rather than true conservatives like Presidents Trump or Reagan. The left-wing media amplifies them to smear patriotic Americans. We will not tolerate attacks on Christians, Jews, American WWII soldiers, or excuses for Hitler.  We're gearing up for a massive political battle in 2028 within the GOP. We will see who turns out the most votes and who builds the strongest coalitions. And then there's the general election, which cannot be won without constitutional conservatives. We've had enough of the grifters and neo-Nazis, the Marxists and Islamists, and their patsies and lapdogs in the media and politics. Also, the Jimmy Kimmel's suspension was never a battle over free speech or government control of speech.  Kimmel was dropped because he's a loathsome punk who made a highly inappropriate comment about the political assassination of Charlie Kirk.  The chairman of the FCC had no role in any of it, no matter what he said or did not say.  So, there's no 1st amendment at issue, despite the best efforts to concoct one.   Kimmel is being brought back because he's a liberal propagandist loved by Democrat Party hacks and the pressure they brought on ABC.  Afterward, Tommy Robinson has long been criticized by the media and political establishment, but many of us see him as someone who's bravely spoken out about uncomfortable truths. His warnings about radical Islam and unchecked migration were dismissed for years, yet recent events have shown he wasn't wrong to raise the alarm.
