Who's your favourite virtual influencer? On this episode the minds of Kubbco explore what brands can gain from developing a virtual influencer – aka a CGI-based, fictional avatar whose uncanny resemblance to a real person enables the brand to tap into storytelling and a bunch of other cool ideas. But are virtual influencers really as novel as the name implies? Or was Kellogg's Tony the Tiger, or McDonald's Ronald McDonald, actually precursors to @lilmiquela and KFC's Colonel? Dive into this episode to find out why virtual influencers are a thing – and what kind of value they add to brands and consumers. What are NFTs, what is their purpose, and how will they revolutionise the internet? On this episode, we're featuring a polarised but friendly discussion about a central element of Web 3.0 – an arguably exciting, but also arguably retrograde, trend whose impact we are only beginning to see. But do non-fungible tokens run counter to the altruistic philosophy of the internet? Or will they soon be as mainstream and non-elitist as smartphones and, therefore, inclusive and of benefit to everyone? Let's find out on a day when the mood in the studio too spans the whole spectrum from yay to nay. Twitter is unique, for reasons good and bad. But one thing's for sure: It's here to stay, at least in some form. That said, is it a platform in need of a rethink and a makeover? Is the endless stream of text-heavy tweets disorientating and exhausting? Is more original video content from users going to make it a more interesting platform? Was ousting Trump a mistake or the only available move? And has Facebook somehow begun to embody the "punchbag" image that used to haunt Twitter? Those are only some of the questions we explore on this episode of the Social Media Sucks podcast. Co-founder of Twitter Jack Dorsey has stepped down as CEO of the company. But what is the significance of such a move – for Twitter, and for tech platforms generally? Is a company somehow halted or impeded by a founder unwilling or unable to let go and pass the reins of power to the next generation of leaders? Should Mark Zuckerberg take a leaf out of Jack's book, or is Zuck's resignation somehow way overdue and too late to be useful? All this and more on this episode of the Social Media Sucks podcast. TV has been around for a LONG time… But is the medium obsolete? And why isn't at least flow TV going away when we've got so many cool new social media platforms to throw our eyeballs at? What does it mean to be a consumer or a marketer in the age of cookies, algorithms, transparency policies and GDPR? That's what we're here to discuss today. That takes us through a bunch of interesting questions such as: How has leveraging data for marketing purposes become harder? Why would anyone ever allow having their data sold – or object to it, for that matter? Exactly what kind of hot water do Facebook and Amazon find themselves in with data?
