We're cleansing our hearts and brains this week by discussing a very good movie with real, human stakes! What a relief. Gina Prince-Bythewood's LOVE & BASKETBALL (2000) has us cheering, laughing, and appreciating the beauty of sports despite our own personal lack of athletic prowess. Do we question if the male lead proves himself to be a worthy romantic partner? Sure, but those reservations are also connected to the film's thoughtful portrayal of ambition and its evolving nature. We also appreciate any movie which gives us the opportunity to consider the weird cultural legacy of Tyra Banks.       Special thanks to Jess for providing this episode's Juvenalia Encore

In this episode of Hollywood Live, Tanya Hart brings exciting news about a potential sequel to the beloved series “A Different World.” The new series, currently in early development for Netflix, is set to follow Dwayne and Whitney's daughter during her time at Hillman College. With the original creative team, including Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Warner, Gina Prince Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood, involved, fans can look forward to a nostalgic and entertaining continuation of the classic show. In the political arena, IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, takes a humorous jab at J.D. Vance, Donald Trump's vice presidential running mate, over a stage setup mishap. During a campaign stop in Philadelphia, a sign intended to criticize Kamala Harris was obscured, amusingly making it appear that Vance was campaigning for her instead. IATSE, the first Hollywood union to endorse Harris for president, praises her and the Biden administration for their pro-union stance. The new movie The Woman King tells the story of the Agojie, a real-life group of women warriors who protected a West African kingdom in the 1820s. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, and John Boyega – and it mixes bloody battle scenes with discussions of leadership and chosen family.
