Here it is - the episode you've all been waiting for! CritWitchCon 2023 was an absolute blast and Lozzie and I made the most of it with another LIVE episode of The Stardust Sessions. And as you may have inferred, the title of said panel was, “Bree and Lozzie Ruin Everything.” We each picked a topic which is taken for granted as Gospel Truth by certain segments of the witchcraft community and set about tearing those assumptions to shreds. For those of you who might be interested in future Critical Thinking Witches online gatherings and virtual events, please visit http://criticalthinkingwitches.com for announcements, scheduling, and contact information. There's a chill in the breeze, the leaves are turning, the pumpkins are grinning, it's time for SPOOKY SEASON! Accordingly, I've brewed up a special surprise for all my witches and horror fans out there. This month's episode is a crossover with Queerdo Babes From The Horror Pod-O-Rama, hosted by the absolutely fabulous Murphy Lawless. We sat down for a nice long chat about depictions of witches and witchcraft in horror cinema. And since there are far too many examples for just one episode, we narrowed it down to a few choice flicks - Häxan (1922), Eyes of Fire (1983), The Craft (1996), Practical Magic (1998), and The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016). (Spoilers abound!) Make sure you check out Queerdo Babes From The Horror Pod-O-Rama for an ALTERNATE version of this episode and follow the show on Instagram and your favorite podcatcher! Volunteer educators are the backbone of the witchcraft community. That can be a huge boon to newer witches, but it can also cause problems when needless gatekeeping or misinformation start to become too prevalent. In this episode, I've set out to clarify a few things about what it means to be a volunteer educator, what it takes to be a guide and a resource, and how we can avoid passing bad information or making newer practitioners feel unwelcome. And since I didn't want to raise this topic without also providing some resources to point people toward, make sure you stay tuned for the Volunteer Educators Showcase later this month! This month, I wanted to talk about a subject near and dear to my own heart - what it's like to be a witch with ADHD. I invited my good buddy and everyone's favorite horrible goose, Lozzie Stardust, to join me for the discussion. Buuuut since we're both in the club, things went off the rails pretty quickly. (We regret nothing.
We all joke about the irony of polytheistic witches being called “godless,” but what happens when your craft is quite literally without deities or spirituality of any kind? I sat down with YouTube's own Sedna Woo to find out. The answer is both simpler and much deeper than you might expect. (Spoiler: I'm totally adding open label placebos to my own practice.) Happy Podcastiversary! Hex Positive is officially two years old and I thought I'd celebrate with an important discussion about growth. We all start out with ideas and impressions that we must unlearn, re-examine, and correct over time. This constant cycle of critical thinking and re-evaluation in response to new information is a normal and necessary part of a healthy practice. It is how we grow as practitioners and as people. And in an effort to lead by example, I sat down with my podcast senpai Trae Dorn, resident lovable curmudgeon and host of our sibling show BS-Free Witchcraft, to talk about the bullshit we used to believe as novice witches and how we outgrew those ideas. You'll have to make your own mistakes and learn your own lessons, but perhaps by hearing our stories, you can avoid one or two of those pitfalls. IT'S FINALLY HERE – the long-await Easter Rant! If you've been following me on tumblr, you may already know how salty I get about internet posts claiming Ostara and Easter are the same holiday…and you may know that I've gotten into literal fights over the topic. WE'RE BAAA-AAAACK! And to celebrate, I'm covering a timely topic that's been tripping me up lately. We all encounter it sooner or later - that feeling of being bogged down, tired, uninspired, and unmotivated. The dreaded Slump. Halloween may be over, but I'm not ready to be done with Spooky Season just yet! As such, this month, I'm diving into the history of Ouija boards, tracing their origins from the spiritualist camps of the late 1800s to their development as a popular party game to some of the modern myths surrounding the board. So there you are - you've done your prep, you've cast your spell, annnnd now you wait. And wait. And wait some more. (How long does this take, anyway?) So how do you know if your spells have worked? Marcus Shields grew up with a piano playing mother and sheet music always around. In High School choir a friend said "this is easy, you should try opera, that's the hard one!" So of course Marcus got into opera and fell in love with it! In grad school, he realized he was good, but not THAT good, but he could help teach his fellow students how to stand, and act and create a character. He believes there is no clear path to directing, but he is the creator of an artistic idea. Marcus has directed operas for every major company in America. He is a cofounder of Ossia Production Company. And a founding member of Catapult Opera. Spencer Richardson thought he wanted to be a movie director when he grew up. Then in high school he took a stagecraft class and realized set design was much more his style! Around that same time he took a trip to Disneyland and learned about Imagineers. Stephen Olear picked up the accordion at the age of 7 and was winning stage championships in high school! His parents agreed he could go to college for a music degree, if he agreed to do something else, so he got his graduate degree at law school. That is how he moved from NJ to CA and started working as an usher at the Music Center. Fast forward a few years, Steven is still working in law with the Small Business Administration, is in his 38th year and now the Usher Manager at the Music Center, as well as the Musical Director and Volunteer coordinator at the Long Beach Playhouse! Cindy and Kate met at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in 2006 where Kate received her BFM in theatre design and production with an emphasis in Sound Design. Even though in high school her teachers told her that she couldn't be on Broadway because they don't let women in the union, and CCM would be too hard for her. Little did they know that only months after graduating CCM, she would be on a national tour as the Audio 2 for "Spring Awakening" and is now on Broadway with "SiIX"! By the age of 5, Antonia had decided she wanted to do theatre! Growing up in Wales, she had plenty of exposure to the arts and local theatres. Always being eager to learn more and her willingness to say yes quickly got her Equity card, a job in opera, the touring circuit and into the academic realm. She has worked all over England, Hong Kong, and Florida! Her dedication to Stage Management and education led her, with the help of her husband, to start the Bamboo Manager Project to provide an online opportunity for stage managers of all backgrounds. Cindy and Stacy met Katurah when they all first worked at Opera Santa Barbara on Madame Butterfly in 2012. Keturah's early career was as a contemporary and classical dancer, working mostly with operas later. It is said that dancers have two deaths; once when their dance career is over, and once at the end of their life. After dancing in and falling in love with Philip Glass' Akhnaten, she decided she would move into directing and has become a huge champion of new American Operas. As a teenager, Stuart went into "The City" to watch a random Broadway show that a friend had a 2 for 1 ticket to. They get there only to find the show has been canceled, so they go next door and watch the original production of..."Grease!" Stuart's life long love for musicals has began. In college he took over hosting a 3 hour Broadway show, probably because he was constantly calling in to request songs. It's now been... a few years... and he still has a radio show called Sounds of Broadway that plays Broadway, Off-Broadway, and the West End, he is the president of the Connecticut Critics Circle, a member of the Outer Critics Circle, and the American Theatre Critics Association. When you're a secular witch in a spiritual world, it can be hard to know what to do around the various holidays. So I've decided to sit down and parse out what non-religious celebrations for witchy holidays might look like. I'm using the Wheel of the Year as a model, since it's easy to follow, but all of the ideas presented in this episode can be applied to whatever seasonal festivals you enjoy. Like so many people, Cris Eli Blak didn't know theatre was a career outside of school. In college he majored in Liberal Studies to get the broadest education and to help understand the widest range of human experience. He started playwriting by copying his idols such as Walt Disney, Shakespeare, August Wilson and Stephen Adly Guirgis. But it did not feel right. That is when he learned that no one could tell your story like you, and the best way to do it, is to just do it.To contact Cris about his shows or upcoming events, please email him at crisblakwrites@gmail.com Attribution: ----more---- Logo: Ritzy Remix font by Nick Curtis - www.nicksfonts.com Music and Soundcello_tuning by flcellogrl / Licence: CC BY 3.0freesound.org/people/flcellogrl/sounds/195138/ Flute Play C - 08 by cms4f / Licence: CC0 1.0freesound.org/people/cms4f/sounds/159123/ "Danse Macabre - Violin Hook" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) / Licence: CC BY 3.0 LicensesCC BY 3.0 - creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/CC0 1.0 - http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

With that comes a huge responsibility to keep that history and its music and traditions alive. That does not mean the technical training has kept up with the field.
