I never wanted to be that way. We can do seven different pieces in seven entirely different styles. You would think, 'is that the same choir?' That's something that my choirs take seriously.”Recipient of the President's Award from the California Music Educators Association honoring "extraordinary accomplishments in music education," Dr. Jonathan Talberg serves as Director of Choral Activities at the Bob Cole Conservatory, where he is conductor of the international award-winning Bob Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir and the CSULB University Choir. In this episode of The Concordia Publishing House Podcast, Rev. Dr. Paul Grime talks about the Lutheran Service Book: Companion to the Services and the history of the Divine Ser vice.Check out more church resources for pastors and laypeople at cph.org.  Show Notes:There is a lot to learn about the services included in the Lutheran Service Book. Expert Rev. Dr. Paul Grime discusses the Lutheran Service Book: Companion to the Services and why it is such a helpful resource to pastors and church members. He clears up some misconceptions around the words “services” and liturgy,” and jumps into the biblical basis for the order of service that we have today. The Lord's Day is sacred and should be honored as such, connecting back to when Jesus sat with His disciples and broke bread with them. Teaching and dining are practices that date back to the Old Testament, yet they are still important practices in our church today. Questions Covered:·         Book is called Companion to the Services and not Companion to the Liturgy. Why? What's the difference between “liturgy” and “service(s)”?·         Where do we get the Divine Service?·         What is the oldest part of the Divine Service? What is the newest part?·         When was it more or less fixed as we know it?·         Is the Divine Service still changing?·         What kind of considerations are there before we add or remove things?·         What is distinctly Lutheran about the Divine Service?·         How is the Lutheran service similar to the mass or services in other denominations?·         What was Martin Luther's view of the Roman Mass as he knew it? What did he change? And more importantly, why did he change things?·         Beyond the obvious, what do we do in the Divine Service? Is our role passive or active? Do we offer or give anything? Do we simply receive?  About the Guest:Paul Grime is the dean of the chapel and a professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, teaching primarily in the area of worship and homiletics. From 1996 to 2007, he served as executive director for the LCMS Commission on Worship at the church body's headquarters in St. Louis. In that position, he was project director for both Hymnal Supplement ‘98 and Lutheran Service Book. Prior to that, he served eight years as senior pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Allis, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee. Grime has music degrees in church music and organ performance from Valparaiso University (BMus) and the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati (MMus). His theology degrees are from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (MDiv, STM) and Marquette University (PhD).

She talks about inherited trauma, a point in her life where she always felt like a black sheep, and how that changed thanks to the Cincinnati art school she went into. Mikayla recalls how her "Wicked" journey started, including sending one tape, getting a call back the following day, almost missing her Broadway debut due to a conflict in schedule, and eventually getting the role of Nessarose. She adds how it was a validation of her gut feeling that it was meant for her. Mikayla talks about her interest in astrology, why she believes that every milestone was meant to place her where she is at the moment, creating a routine and sticking to it and that everyone should go to therapy. She shares how the pandemic affected the trajectory of her life and career as well as using her dance skills to get another job. She also speaks candidly about her being a competitive gymnast and a national champion when she was younger. Since their first engagement together as musicians for a church camp in Petersburg, Michigan in August, 1986 until now, the ministry God has given Phil & Kim has expanded and flourished until it is a full-time livelihood that involves their entire family.Their boundaries of influence have expanded until they have sung and played all over the United States (as well as internationally) into their 36th year of ministry.Phil & Kim's actual base of ministry began during their college days. Phil is a 1986 graduate of God's Bible School & College, Cincinnati, OH. This is the famous, 100+ year old college that is well-known within Christian education ranks for having been the American college where Oswald Chambers (“My Utmost For His Highest”) taught.Phil also completed professional trumpet studies at College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati and earned a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree with a double major in trumpet performance and music education.Kim attended Union Bible College, Westfield, IN where she was very instrumental in arranging most of the music that was performed by the college's traveling music groups. Since that time, many ministry opportunities have come across their pathway. They have always maintained a public performance ministry, which for the first fourteen years included doing music presentations for church camps and extended-length revival campaigns. They have also held the positions of Ministers of Music, Hobe Sound Bible Church, Hobe Sound, FL; Director, Music Division, Union Bible College, Westfield, IN; and Phil was Dean of Enrollment Management at his Alma Mater, God's Bible School & College, Cincinnati, OH. In January, 2000, Phil & Kim transitioned to a new, all-concert ministry. They began recording professionally and currently utilize America's top-selling choral arranger, Bradley Knight (Dallas, TX) as their primary producer. This new emphasis began to expand their boundaries rapidly. Their home has seen the addition of four children across the years and the children are now very actively involved in the ministry.Their two oldest daughters are quite proficient on the violin and play at each of their concerts. Their entire family sings together in an ensemble.Kim is well-known for her phenomenal mastery of the piano and the extraordinary talent God has given her is a part of each concert, as well as trumpet solos from Phil. On February 1, 2019, they signed an exclusive booking agreement with JEFF ROBERTS & ASSOCIATES of Hendersonville, TN, which now represents them in all personal appearances. Then, on April 12, 2021, The Collingsworth Family signed a recording agreement with Gaither Music Group, Nashville, TN which now markets their recordings internationally, both digitally and physically, via GMG's agreement with UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP/CAPITOL CHRISTIAN as exclusive distributor. This new agreement also added The Collingsworth Family to appear regularly on the GAITHER GOSPEL HOUR's internationally syndicated television shows, distributed to more than a dozen commercial television networks.Their ministry is featured regularly on the nation's largest gospel music syndicated radio program, The Gospel Greats with Rodney Baucom. Their music is also regularly featured on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio's Enlighten Channel 65, GMT (Gospel Music Television), The DayStar Television Network, INSP, and is featured each year, at Christmas, in prime-time specials on the Trinity Broadcasting Television Network. The Collingsworth Family has appeared on many of the Gaither's Homecoming Series live concert events around the nation, making appearances with the Gaithers in some of their largest venues in the US and Canada, as well as taping many of their filming events at the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, TN; The Billy Graham Library, Charlotte, NC; and at their hometown studio, Alexandria, IN.The CFam Personal Appearance Schedule shows the broad appeal their family emphasis has, performing in all types of venues across the US, the Cayman Islands, Sweden, Norway, Canada, etc. They annually make appearances at The Brooklyn Tabernacle, Brooklyn NY; The Billy Graham Training Center, Asheville, NC; Shadow Mountain Community Church, El Cajon, CA; and at many festivals and celebrations such as The Great Smokies PraiseFest, Sevierville, TN; Branson PraiseFest, Branson, MO; The National Quartet Convention, Pigeon Forge, TN; Gaither's Family Fest, Gatlinburg, TN; etc.The rapid expansion they have seen occur with the transition to an all-concert ministry is a direct result of the emphasis they have placed on the power of prayer. Each Tuesday evening, they hold a private prayer meeting in their home for the specific purpose of praying for the salvation of their children and the expansion of their ministry.Since the beginning of these weekly prayer meetings in 2000, the doors of opportunity for ministry have opened to them, crossing all evangelical denominational boundaries. Phil & Kim's entire purpose is to give the talent God has loaned them back to their Creator as a sacrifice of praise. The Collingsworth Family: Phil and Kim Collingsworth, children, Brooklyn Collingsworth Blair, the oldest sibling, Courtney Collingsworth-Metz, the second-oldest of the four siblings, Phil Collingsworth jr., the third oldest of the four kids, Olivia Collingsworth, the youngest sibling. Daniel Wachter is the guest host on this episode of the Talent Magnet Leadership Podcast, as part of his series Making Leadership Tangible. Stefani Matsuo is his guest. Stefani is the Concertmaster at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Violin at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. In this exciting conversation, Stefani and Daniel talk about her role as a concertmaster and how the disciplines related to that role can be translated to leadership in the business world. Stefani describes what it's like to be a concertmaster, and what it takes. [3:09] The partnership between a concertmaster and a conductor can start before the first rehearsal. The concertmaster and conductor can have meetings to discuss the music in advance, as it's being prepared for performance. The conductor's job is to communicate their interpretation of a score through speaking and through their actions, and the concertmaster's job is to interpret the conductor's interpretation and convert that to the orchestra. Concertmasters also have to be able to collaborate with their colleagues on stage and guide dialogue in rehearsals when an interpretation is not clear. [5:26] In music and the business world, individuals will not always agree. Oftentimes, however, these conflicts and the difficult conversations that ensue, can lead to better outcomes as it allows for people to make suggestions and for new methods and avenues to be applied. Making agreements even when you disagree, and being open-minded are traits all leaders should have. [9:39] Trust is one of the key principles of leadership. [14:31] Stefani talks about the many ways concertmasters convey to the orchestra during performances. [15:53] Successful leaders balance being direct and taking a step back, without being laissez-faire. To scale and to motivate people, you need to give them freedom of action. Leave them the space they need and allow them to have their own interpretation, as long as it still aligns with the framework of the composition. [21:00] Learning by doing is the best way to get into the leadership mindset. Leaders also learn by reading, listening to podcasts, and picking the brains of other leaders they know personally. [23:56] Stefani talks about how being a young female concertmaster has impacted her career in the music industry. [27:25] For young women who are or hope to be in leadership positions, be persistent and know that your skills are important and good. If you're turned down for a job, use that critique and build on it to approach your next job. Use the criticism to strengthen your skillset instead of letting it hinder or discourage you. At just 23 years old, Phillip Johnson Richardson, aka Phil., has already established himself as a promising singer, rapper, and actor. But the journey was't always easy for Phil.. His mental fortitude and meteoric rise can be attributed to the perseverance gained when his family suddenly fell homeless and found themselves sleeping on a relative's garage floor. The hardship dialed up his drive and appreciation for the arts, so he pushed himself even harder. Immediately after graduation he landed his first role, joining the Chicago company ensemble of the sold-out musical phenom Hamilton, playing various characters including its namesake Alexander Hamilton. Since then Phil. moved to New York City and found a successful acting career, with appearances on tv shows Chicago PD, Proven Innocent, and The Other Two and horror film Haunt. He was cast as a series regular on the new Apple TV+ show Little Voice created by Sara Bareilles and JJ Abrams. An Incredible range of talent is seen across his music and best showcased in his upcoming EP 'Different Cities'. Over the course of the episode, we cover a lot of ground, including what it means to be a 21st century composer, the possible future of CD's, and issues of equity in the orchestra. Read below for his bio; resources mentioned in the podcast are listed below as well. Award-winning composer Nicolas Bizub writes music which is dark, striving, and yearning, which also points towards radiance and light. Inspired by both the natural world and the human interaction with it, Nicolas often uses nature within his music as metaphors for more human topics, including emotion, politics, creation, and destruction. His musical language blends bittersweet melodic sensibilities with a richly dark harmonic language and volatile driving rhythms to forge a visceral, audible connection with these light and dark sides of humanity. His music has received prizes and awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The American Prize, the McKnight Foundation, New York Youth Symphony First Music, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, the Wisconsin Cello Society, Lawrence University, and the College-Conservatory of Music. He has been praised for his “ability to weave musical textures, sonorities, and skillfully change pacing” within his works as an element which “truly shines” (Helena Michelson, American Prize). Nicolas’ music has been written for and performed by numerous leading new music ensembles and artists, including, British violinist Madeleine Mitchell, American violist Michael Hall, loadbang, NOW Ensemble, Hypercube, Zodiac Trio, F-PLUS, Unheard-of//Ensemble, and American violist Bailey Poesnecker, among others. Perhaps the greatest challenge in writing about Cincinnati's up-and-coming singer Bla'szé is attempting to describe her style. Last year, Bla'szé performed at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards and was nominated in the “R&B/funk/soul” category. Yet, even combining three genres isn't quite enough to describe Bla'szé. “I love to do all types of music,” she said during her WCPO Lounge Acts appearance at Northside Yacht Club. “Whatever I'm feeling in the moment, that's what it's going to be,” Bla'szé said casually, seemingly unimpressed by her own versatility. “If I want to rap, I'm probably going to rap. If I want to sing a little more, I'm going to sing a little more.” As talented as she is at singing, Bla'szé first pursued a dance career at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music where she graduated in 2013 with her bachelor in fine arts in ballet. When injury sidelined her dance prospects, she turned her focus to singing. “Being in ballet is really what I need to get the confidence to perform in front of people,” she said. Bla'szé continued building her confidence on her recent debut album, “Energy.” It's an album that Bla'szé said helped in “realizing the confidence I have to tell my story.” The story “Energy” tells is not a linear one. It begins with the super-chill good-time R&B-style “Good Vibes,” bounces right into the rather explicit rap track “Everybody Like Me,” and then into the dance-pop single “Love Me Tonight.” Somehow, Bla'szé blends these genres fluidly around herself to shape a style of her very own. As an audience, we're left with only one word to describe Bla'szé's style of music: everything. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2002, Prof. Spira was a 280-pound, 19 year old former high school football player who suffered from multiple ailments such as daily migraine headaches, frequent ear infections, sleep apnea, painful acid reflux, allergies, joint pain, yearly bouts of bronchitis, constant cold and flu-like symptoms, dry itchy skin, chronic constipation, ear infections, and bad body odor. After he lost his mother to a terrible string of chronic illnesses when he was in the 6th grade, he grew up assuming that he was genetically destined to be sick his whole life. While studying jazz trombone performance at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, he met a jazz drummer named Willie Smart (aka Brother Air) who told him about Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System. He had no idea that the mucus-forming foods he consumed played a huge part in his lack of wellness. All he knew was that if he continued on this path of self-destruction, he would surely die. Within 6 months of reading the book, Spira lost 110 pounds and overcame all of his major ailments. He was able to throw away his CPAP unit (an oxygen mask that treats sleep apnea) and the medications he’d taken since childhood. Since his transformation, Spira has become a world-renowned authority on the Mucusless Diet and inspired thousands of people to use Ehret’s Healing System to overcome their illnesses through his writings, music, and one-on-one consultation and coaching sessions.Learn more about Professor Spira and his work at: https://www.mucusfreelife.com/about/prof-spira/If you would like to listen to more of these podcast interviews, head to:http://www.fruitfest.co.uk/podcastLearn more about the UK Fruitfest, the world's best educational raw vegan event held annually each year in England. Denise Tryon, Associate Professor of Horn at the College Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinatti and former Fourth Horn with the Philadelphia Orchestra, has built a wonderful career which combines teaching, performing, and expanding the repertoire of her instrument through active commissions.  Denise is a trail blazer in our field!  She has asked herself the hard questions and has not been afraid to step off the beaten path and shape her unique, meaningful, and impactful career.  In this episode, we discuss: Her journey from student, to top-five orchestra member, soloist, and pedagogue The distinction between warmup and daily routine (hint: a warmup is a small part of a daily routine) What a good routine covers – the various fundamentals of your instrument as well as extended techniques How to set up your own routine – something that works really well for you What mindful, efficient, practice is to her: o   Be demanding but kind with yourself o   How to organize it (I'm loving the “55 and out” technique!) o   How to problem solve o   What “swear” words she will not allow in her studio (and they are not what you're thinking!) o   How we need to let go and go with the flow o   The four elements we need to address in the practice room – technical, physical, musical, and mental Audition Mode and audition preparation How musicians need to figure out how to find our own voice and market themselves How we must strive for excellence, not perfection “Change your mind and your body will follow” “Be demanding and caring” when you practice “Give to yourself first”     ALL ABOUT guest: Website: http://denisetryon.com/ Low Horns Unite: http://denise-tryon.thinkific.com/courses/low-horns-unite Audition Mode: http://auditionmode.com/ YouTube channels: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-NXdXmBOZ08O4ijSX6wTzg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dt_lowhorn/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeniseTryonHorn/   Her album, So Low Doctor Beat Metronome by Boss Mechanical Metronome (not the one she mentions) Horn Berp – Buzz Extension Resistance Piece The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music by Victor L. Hi Friend, welcome to the blog and show notes for Episode 41 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. On Episode 41, my awesome guest is Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino.  Her work with the ground-breaking immersive-devised opera, The Wreck, is just one of the things we discuss.   I’m your SallyPAL podcast host, Sally Adams. And every week I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Because your ideas keep great conversations coming every week.   Check out sallypal.com/join for a cool free theatre resource called the Creator’s Notebook. You can also be a Sally ‘pal’ just by joining. There are other good reasons to join. Members get theatre cartoons, inside scoop on fresh productions, and entry into a larger creator community.   Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino hit the ground running after getting an MFA in Stage Management from the College-Conservatory of Music. She went to New York and got hired almost immediately. She became a production assistant on the Broadway production of Equus starring Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe in 2008.   Cindy's journey started when she and her identical twin, Stacy Hennon Stone, did props for the musical Anything Goes their freshmen year of high school. The two now host a podcast called Twins Talk Theatre. The show is a series of great convos about working backstage.   Sister Stacy is a professional technical director in Long Beach, California. But neither twin planned on becoming a theatre professional. Cindy started by pursuing a degree in math. Stacy started in the business school. But theatre has powerful magnetic pull.   Each Hennon sister graduated from a different college with a theatre degree. Cindy’s sister headed to Southern California. Cindy followed when she found work with Palos Verdes Performing Arts.   Cindy and I talk about Long Beach Opera, the opera, Nixon in China, the LA opera, Hopscotch, and Portland Opera. She currently stage manages the opera, Faust, with the Oregon company. This latest venture features 3-D projections based on the work of sculptor John Frame.   The projections and projection mapping are a collaboration among designers Frame, Vita Tzykun, David Adam Moore, and Duane Schuler. It’s received a lot of attention from a previous reveal with Lyric opera in Chicago. Opera Wire called this production “a visual feast for the ages.”   But Portland’s production isn’t the most progressive thing Cindy’s done this year. In March, she and a small contingent with Opera Omaha embarked on a rare journey. The work they created is unique.   The Wreck is an immersive devised opera created in only 10 days. The Wreck borrows music and other bits from Slavik mythology and mermaid folklore. It features the writings of Anne Sexton, Alice Walker, and Adrienne Rich. It also floats on the music of Donizetti, Schubert, and Von Bingen. Ukrainian composer Mariana Sadovska adds new music creating an eclectic, otherwordly piece set in Omaha… sort of.   I know you’re going to enjoy what Cynthia has to say about stage managing and opera. There’s plenty of fresh ideas in the world of live opera performance. I can’t wait to see what she does next. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George.   Concise Advice from the Interview 7) Stage manage a show as opposed to a genre of theatre 6) Help the designers make a safe working environment for the performers 5) Focus on the show and focus on the people and everything else will fall into place 4) Go see opera! 3) Use physical cues to show you are open to a conversation 2) Experiment and have fun! 1) Think outside of the box   Thank you for following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing and joining. And thank you for listening. Download the SallyPAL podcast and listen on your drive to work. Or fall asleep to my recitatives like my sister does. Just be sure to let me know you’re out there.   Storytelling through plays, dances, opera, and other types of performances is the most important thing we do as a culture. That’s why I encourage you to share your stories. You’re the only one with your particular point of view. And SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of storytellers.   I want to help you tell your stories. All the stories ever expressed once lived only in someone’s imagination. Now… Think outside the box!

In this episode we talk to Lee Crumpton, the owner of Home Grown Music Network. Lee has been one of the most influential people in the southeastern music scene for the last 20 years. He talks about chasing down his passion for music by becoming a DJ at an early age--both the party and radio kind--and how that led him to forming a record label and working with some of the best bands in the nation.  We also talk about what it takes for bands to expand their reach beyond just a couple of states, as well as what he sees for the future of his company.    We listen to three songs: "Damn!" by The Motet "The Shadow" by The College Conservatory of Music featuring Fareed Haque and the music of Garage Mahal "Roll River" by the first band Lee ever worked with, Purple School Bus ________________________________________________________ We want to thank our two sponsors this week: The Photobooth: by Andy Cox Photography This is a full-service mobile portrait studio.
