In this episode of Music Evolves, Sean Martin sits down with Seth Cluett, Director of the Computer Music Center and Assistant Director of the Sound Art MFA program at Columbia, to explore the center's rich history, its role in advancing music technology, and how it continues to shape the future of sound. The Legacy and Mission of the Computer Music CenterThe CMC is housed in the same 6,000-square-foot space as the original Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which dates back to 1951 and is one of the world's oldest university-based electronic music research facilities. This was the birthplace of early electronic music, where pioneers learned to use cutting-edge technology to create new sounds. Many of those musicians went on to establish their own studios around the world, from Egypt to Japan. The center has played a role in major milestones in music history, including the work of Wendy Carlos, a former student known for Switched-On Bach, the score for Tron, and The Shining. The first piece of electronic music to win a Pulitzer Prize was also composed here. Today, under Cluett's leadership, the focus remains on creativity-driven technological innovation—allowing composers and artists to explore technology freely and push the boundaries of what's possible in sound and music. One of the center's guiding principles is accessibility. Cluett emphasizes the importance of lowering barriers to entry for students who may not have had prior access to music technology. The goal is to make sure that anyone, regardless of background, can walk into the studio and begin working with 80% of its capabilities within the first 20 minutes.Exploring the Labs and StudiosThe episode also includes a tour of the labs and studios, showcasing some of the center's groundbreaking equipment. One highlight is the RCA Mark II Synthesizer, the world's first programmable music synthesizer. Built in the late 1950s, this massive machine—seven feet tall and weighing over a ton—was instrumental in shaping the sound of early electronic music. The system worked by punching holes into paper to control sound generation, similar to a player piano. While no longer in use, the CMC has collaborated with iZotope to model some of its effects digitally. The tour also features Columbia's electronic music studio, which houses synthesizers from Buchla, Serge, and Moog—the latter being developed by Bob Moog, who was once an undergraduate at Columbia. The center's modern design emphasizes a seamless workflow between analog and digital technologies, allowing students to quickly create, process, and experiment with sound.Another key space is the immersive media and spatial audio research facility, which features a 12.1-channel loudspeaker sphere for ambisonic sound, along with a 32-capsule microphone that captures highly detailed audio environments. This technology is not only shaping music but also fields like virtual reality, data sonification, and interactive media. The Future of Music TechnologyLooking ahead, Cluett highlights the increasing interplay between AI, machine learning, and music composition. While some companies promote AI-generated melodies, he believes that truly expressive, human-driven composition remains essential. The role of technology, he argues, is not to replace human creativity but to enable new forms of expression. The CMC is at the forefront of this shift, experimenting with real-time audio processing, interactive performance systems, and embedded sensors that enhance live music experiences. As music and technology continue to merge, Columbia's Computer Music Center remains a key player in shaping the future of sound. Whether through pioneering hardware, software innovation, or fostering the next generation of creative minds, the center proves that music technology is not just about engineering—it's about expression, accessibility, and the pursuit of artistic joy.

Marsalis joins us for more on how New Orleans influenced his early life and highlights the successes of the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music over its 12-year history and shares his visions for the future of the institution as its new artistic director.  Everybody has a story to tell, but not everyone has the confidence, training or even the right words to tell it.  That's where the Arts Council of Baton Rouge comes in. Their creative writing workshop encourages storytellers — specifically those 55 years old and up — to put pen to paper.  Pam Bordelon, participant, editor and facilitator tells us more about the workshop and the anthology of short stories recently published by participants. There's nothing like chatting with an author who immerses herself in her writing in a way you totally get.  Jaimie Engle isn't just a fabulous romance writer, she's also a screenwriter who has a movie that follows the same storyline as the book we're chatting about today.  Listen in as we learn all about how she got started in screenwriting and... how it changed the writing process for her! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. This Book Isn't Just a Great Romance. It's Also a Heartwarming Movie! I always wondered if screenwriting would be a great way to write a really detailed outline for a book, and the verdict is in. According to Jaimie Engle, the answer is a resounding yes. But for me, the most exciting story was how she was just talking to a guy about movies, heard what they were looking for, said she'd have something to him, and boom!  Off she went to learn how to do it and get that sucker sold!  Way to go, Jaimie! Not only that, but she also went the extra mile in publishing her novel. All the bonus and other stuff you can find on her WEBSITE (with the special QR code at the end of the book) are so much fun! Like she has a SONG from the book? WHAT??? Just Jake by Jaimie Engle Amber Gibson, Entrepreneur Life is perfect. Amber runs Pops Place, a popular downtown Colorado Springs diner and a staple her parents passed down upon retirement. She also teaches music to underprivileged kids at The Music Center, where they put on a concert during Octoberfest at the Mining Museum each year. Amber's happy with life just the way it is. Until her ex-boyfriend Jake comes back on the scene. Jake Collins, Superstar. Life is perfect. Jake's a country music sensation discovered on TikTok by manager Marvin Banks. With fawning fans, cash in his pockets, and traveling on tour, Jake's got it all. Except for the passion to write his next hit. He's not feeling it anymore and can't figure out what's missing. Jake's sent back home, where he runs into high school sweetheart, Amber Gibson. Like most second-chance romances, the prospects don't look promising for Amber and Jake's reunion tour. But then, he connects with her newest student, Joaquin, a boy with Jake's same musical talents and abusive father. As Jake's falling in love with her students, Amber's falling back in love with him. He never stopped loving her…but his proposal may not be the one she's expecting. You can also watch Just Jake on Up! Follow Jaimie Engle on GoodReads and BookBub. There is a long and global tradition of artists—visual, performing, and literary—creating arresting, even beautiful works that address the horrors of war. How is art used as a form of protest, to change minds as well as hearts? What happens to its meaning over time—as war persists, and as new battles erupt? And what does it say about us all that war has inspired acclaimed works from artists as diverse as Pablo Picasso, Pussy Riot, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? In 1932, amid Hitler's rise to power, the German choreographer Kurt Jooss created The Green Table, a ballet subtitled A Dance of Death in Eight Scenes. As the Paul Taylor Dance Company brings this work to The Music Center—as part of its Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center series—join us for a panel discussion, moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Can such art help us now, in a moment of many international crises? And how do warmongers and politicians co-opt and commission art as propaganda? Panelists included Gelare Khoshgozaran, artist, filmmaker and writer; Khalil Kinsey, COO, chief curator and creative director for the Kinsey African American Art & History Collection; Michael Novak, artistic director, Paul Taylor Dance Company; and Nadya Tolokonnikova, creator, Pussy Riot. This event took place on April 25, 2023 at The Music Center and was moderated by novelist and professor Viet Thanh Nguyen.

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. A few months ago, I arranged an episode with a guest who wanted to talk about Phish's performance of “Free” from August 2, 2022 at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. After trying to set up a recording date and time with the guest, things eventually fell through. I was left with a great jam and a boatload of notes with no one to talk to about it.I put out a call on Phish Twitter and got such a response! It seemed like everybody wanted to talk about this jam, and I can see why. Luckily, we were able to arrange two guests for this fantastic jam: one returning guest–Mike Lowe, who was previously on Attendance Bias to discuss the all-time version of “Fluffhead” from Alpine Valley ‘99, and a brand-new guest: Mercedes from Phish Twitter, or you may know her better as ZzBenz. Either way, it was a perfect way to blend the familiar with the new to go over what several people referred to as the 2022 Jam of the Year.Moving through several sections, Phish took the second set opener and took the audience on a musical journey that felt like it was composed and spontaneous at the same time. But I don't want to spoil it. Let's join Mercedes and Mike to talk about Summer 2022, planetarium music, and Hansen, as we discuss “Free” from August 2, 2022 at Blossom.

On Jan. 14, 2023, the Music Center (link is external)in Los Angeles had a celebration concert to honor Jerry Moss. Many artists participated, and today's Listening Lyrics  plays some of their music. In 1960, Moss moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert,(link is external) forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their new company A&M Records. In 1987, Moss and Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram Records for a reported $500 million. Both continued to manage the label until 1993, when they left because of frustrations with PolyGram's constant pressure to force the label to fit into its corporate culture. In 1998, Alpert and Moss sued PolyGram for breach of the integrity clause, eventually settling for an additional $200 million.

Welcome back for another exciting conversation, this time with an educator who has been working with children for over 40 years. Dr. Victoria Waller, author of Yes! Your Child Can: Creating Success for Children with Learning Differences, joins the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast to help us identify the strengths of each child to unlock their full potential. Her focus for the last 40 years and counting is not what is wrong with children, but what is right.   In our discussion today, Dr. Waller shares several of her experiences and student success stories that have resulted from focusing on interests and strengths. As parents and educators, sometimes we get caught up in honing in on deficits and while early intervention is crucial, we can better reach a child and develop a trusting relationship when we help them with the things they love. Releasing in June 2022, Dr. Waller's book is highly recommended for all parents.   Show Notes: [2:07] - Victoria Waller's book is available for preorder for release in June 2022.  [3:10] - Even 40 years ago, Victoria never called it a disability and sees kids' incredible abilities. [4:14] - Victoria shares the statistics that show that most parents think their child will “snap out of it” and educators think children with learning differences are “lazy.” [6:01] - What inspired her to write this specific book? After putting the book aside, Victoria had two experiences that pushed her to publish. [8:19] - When you have a gut feeling, you have to get your child help. [10:40] - Sharing another story about a child's passion, Victoria proves the impact of using a child's interests in their learning. [12:32] - All children have positives and strengths and recognizing them is empowering. [13:53] - Some kids spend all day in school and every day in therapy after school and it can be detrimental to have too much going on. [14:59] - Most parents pay close attention to what their child can't do rather than what they can do. [16:12] - Sometimes you need to get creative to teach a skill using a child's passion. It connects their interest with learning and sparks more interest. [18:41] - Many children with learning differences can use their passions to create. [20:56] - In her book, Victoria takes readers on a step by step process. [23:06] - You can be smart, but still struggle. [24:23] - Parents tend to be afraid of learning problems and struggles can cause stress for both the parents and the student. [25:44] - While helping parents understand, Victoria's book is also helping empower students. [27:24] - Confidence is crucial and is even a key component of socializing. [30:01] - It is okay to reach out to a teacher or therapist. [31:21] - Victoria's book also provides educators with ways to communicate with parents about a child's strengths.   About Our Guest: Victoria E.
