VARs and MSPs can sometimes be represented as operating in two different, siloed segments of the B2B technology market, but in a world where “one source” partners and consultants are more valuable than ever, collaboration is the future. This week, we're joined by Shane Mishler, VP & COO of SD Tech, an MSP that's already doing just that. How does Shane equate tech consulting to a construction project? How do MSPs handle requests that are outside of their scope? What emerging tech are his clients asking about? #VARValue - How can VARs develop better mutual relationships with MSPs? What ghostly traces do poets leave behind, and how do we curate their legacy? Dr Katie Mishler speaks to poet Vona Groake, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Manchester, about the life and writing of MoLI's resident ghost, poet and Jesuit Priest Gerard Manly Hopkins. In 1884, Hopkins became Professor of Classics at University College Dublin, and lived and worked in Newman House, now the home of MoLI, until his death of typhoid fever in 1889 at the age of 44. As an Englishman, Hopkins felt lonely and isolated in Dublin and at the University, where he worked extremely long and grueling hours. Out of this misery, however, he wrote some of his most celebrated poetry, the ‘terrible sonnets', so-called because of their expression of pain and isolation. His poetry also expresses queer desire that is at odds with his faith. By visiting MoLI's hidden corridors, including the Hopkins bedroom that Groake curated in the 1990s, the two discuss Hopkins' enduring contribution to poetry, his difficult life and death in Dublin, and whether or not he haunts the halls of MoLI.Do you enjoy reading ghost stories alone at night? Do you enjoy reading ghost stories alone at night? Have you ever binged an entire true crime series? Or do you unwind watching horror films like The Exorcist, or reading the supernatural novels of Stephen King? The Dublin Gothic Podcast is a series looking at the intersection between art, psychology, folklore, architecture, natural history and Ireland's urban gothic writing.Vampires, ghosts, and the undead have an enduring cultural legacy. These uncanny figures inform, or perhaps infect, depictions of the body, maternity, and sexuality in contemporary Irish women's writing. This panel discussion, recorded live in MoLI's Old Physics Theatre, led by Dr Katie Mishler and featuring Sarah Davis-Goff, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, and Sophie White, uncovers how the gothic monstrosities of Bram Stoker and others continue to be a powerful metaphor for social anxieties, marginalisation, and historical erasure. Sarah Davis-Goff is co-founder of Tramp Press, which publishes the Recovered Voices series, re-publishing a lost Irish classic once a year, with a bent towards speculative fiction. In 2019 her own novel Last Ones Left Alive was published in the UK and Ireland by Tinder Press, and in the US by Flatiron. Last Ones Left Alive was nominated for the Edinburgh First Book Prize and the Not-The-Booker Prize, shortlisted for an Irish Book Award and the Kate O'Brien Award, and won the Chrysalis Award. She lives in Dublin. Doireann Ní Ghríofa is a poet and essayist. Her prose début A Ghost in the Throat was awarded the James Tait Back Prize for Biography, and described as “powerful” (New York Times), and “captivatingly original” (The Guardian). Doireann is also author of six critically-acclaimed books of poetry, each a deepening exploration of birth, death, desire, and domesticity. Sophie White is a writer and podcaster from Dublin. Her first book, a memoir-cookbook work, Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown (Gill 2016) was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards. Her second book and first novel, the bestselling, Filter This (Hachette, 2019) was also shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards. Her third book, Unfiltered (Hachette, 2020) was described by Marian Keyes as ‘such fun – gas, clever stuff'. Her fourth book and second work of non-fiction is the bestselling essay collection, Corpsing: My Body and Other Horror Shows published by Tramp Press in 2021.Dr Katie Mishler is an Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership Postdoctoral Fellow (2020-2022) in collaboration with the UCD Centre for Cultural Analytics and Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI). In this conversation, Brenda and guest Kim Mishler share advice they would give their younger selves about how to prepare for the shock, disappointment, and grief experienced in mothering and midlife. Discover the importance of recognizing: ✅ The cause and effect of unrealistic expectations on our kids. ✅ The individuality of each child. ✅ Our children will disappoint us and we will disappoint them. ✅ The value of coping strategies: trusted individuals to confide in; scripture and prayer to lean on. ✅ The value of growing your whole self through the mothering journey. ✅ Your joy and contentment should come from Jesus and not your children.

This week's episode is the last of our celebration of one year of the podcast and we have brought back another fan favourite Emily Mishler! Emily and I have developed a deep connection which started with both of us listening to a feeling that we needed to get to know each other. I had no idea what friendship would blossom from that and that she would be my teacher for many important lessons in my life. The pandemic was the opportunity for us to slow down, focus on what is important and create intentions about how we wanted our life to look like and reflect on what had worked so far in getting us closer towards our goals and aspirations in life. During this episode, we let you in on what has worked both for our work lives and in developing and maintaining our friendship consciously. This was recorded earlier this year and both of us are in Hawaii together during this release - you never know what happens when you say and mean yes! I can't wait to hear what you think about this episode - it is a very special one! During this episode we discuss: Knowing how a healthy relationship feels for you Intimate relationships - the one with yourself and your environment Guilt and shame around travelling and leaving your closest family members The feeling of knowing that you have to do something so you don't settle for a life that is small The deep desires in your heart is life trying to move through you You always know the right next step for you if you are willing to listen to your inner voice Don't drink the ‘compare-slogger' Understand the underlying motivation for your behaviours that may be distracting you from listening to that inner voice Be willing to go ‘there' and have conversations that are uncomfortable but part of healthy relationships Emily's Bio: Author, adventurer & life-liver, Emily Mishler is the driving force behind The Cultivated Group and the world of Esmè the Curious Cat. I'm talking with artist Ashley Mishler. I met Ashley a few years ago at a show I was playing with her now husband Silas Mishler who you met on episode 2. Ashley is multi-faceted creative and we discuss her journey with music, art and writing and how playing drums let's us express the loud, brash sides of ourselves that women are generally discouraged from showing. Along with painting, Ashley makes wearable art by customizing and upcycling clothes and accessories. That sparks a conversation around how it's common these days for artists only feel valuable when they're monetizing the things they make versus just letting art exist for the sake of art.

On Wednesday, June 30, Pam Marvin talked with Julia Mishler and Misty Poe about Catholic School education. Julia will be the new St. Joseph Catholic School Principal in Bryan, Texas this upcoming school year. Julia has been involved in the public school system for about 15 years, and is excited to jump into her role in a Catholic School. Misty Poe is the Austin Diocese Catholic Schools Superintendent. Julia, Misty, and Pam discussed the importance and beauty of a Catholic school education, as well as their plans to help make St. Joseph Catholic School the best it can be, and help to form the students into academic and Faith scholars! Their main goal is to make disciples, so that once the students leave the school, they will boldly go out into the world and evangelize. We are excited to have her join our tight-knit Catholic community here in Bryan! Now remember to go and love your neighbor!

Hello everyone! Last week, Peter Mishler and I discussed his book, FOR ALL YOU DO (which you should buy). This week, we examined one of his beliefs—the belief that self-care for teachers also includes advocating for what is best for students. This inevitably led us into a discussion on Critical Race Theory, current legislation issues, and discussing why teaching is inherently a political act. I loved this discussion, because it wasn't planned. This was two teachers talking about advocacy and what that means in today's climate. Teach Me, Teacher has always faced the real world head on, and this episode is no different. I believe this episode will be one of many that mentions Critical Race Theory, as we all work through the facts before us, and what they mean for our schools. While this discussion covers hot button issues, I believe it is done in a way to invite teachers into a place of safety for thinking about Critical Race Theory, and any other contentious issue. Teach Me, Teacher is not a place that forces ideas down your throat, it is a place that allows us to think, question, advocate, and support the kids in our schools. Many of us have different views on how to do this, and we should be listening to each other as we navigate the changing landscape before us. Peter is a high school English teacher of thirteen years and has twice been named Teacher of the Year at schools in New York and Kansas. His first collection of poems, Fludde, published by Sarabande Books in 2018, won the prestigious Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry. Peter is also a regular contributor to Literary Hub, and the author of his latest book, For All You Do. This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Start Here, Start Now: A Guide to Antibias and Antiracist Work in Your School Community by Liz Kleinrock. Most of us want to help cultivate an antibias and antiracist classroom and school community, but we don't know how or where to start. This book helps us set ourselves up for success and prepare for the mistakes we'll make along the way. Start Here, Start Now addresses the challenges that educators committed to antibias and antiracism face every day. Liz provides concrete strategies to overcome some of the barriers that prevent us from engaging in this work and includes lessons and activities we can start using in our classrooms right away. This book will help break habits that hold us back from this work, as well as build positive, sustainable teaching for the future. Start Here, Start Now is available as a book, ebook, and audiobook. Hello everyone! As one of the hardest years is winding down, many of us are thinking about self-care. We're eyeing the beach turning off alarm clocks, and getting ready to have some serious R&R with our loved ones. But if you're like me, maybe that self-care looks different. Maybe taking on special projects rejuvenates you, or even (gasp), thinking about teaching and the changes you will make next year is how you recover during the summer months. Regardless of your perspective, I think my talk with Peter Mishler will enlighten you on your personal journey to self-care and recovery from the year that will be defined for all of us as the PANDEMIC year. In this episode, we dive into why he write the book—which isn't as obvious as it might seem, and then meander through various topics, such as receiving PD from people outside of teaching, the art of being a rebel vs a yes-man, and questioning traditional methods to self-care heaven. The Angles of Lattitude Podcast: Learn from the Successes of the Creatively Self Employed
As we're quickly hurtling towards 2021, many a young professional is finding it harder and harder to sync into the "real world" once they're out of college. For me, it's been over 10 years since I got out. And it took me quite awhile to get my bearings. I can only imagine what it's like now as the world is changing faster and faster outside the ivory tower of academia.Personally, I think 2020 has been a wake up call in more ways than one. Sure, we've been talking about pivoting all year since the virus officially dropped. But one thing we haven't discussed is the need for better networking skills. For yours truly, I struggled with this for awhile when I got out of school. In fact, I wasn't all that great at it even when I started this podcast. However, it was through the podcast, that I have been able to build my networking skills. It's definitely not the same perspective I have on the art as I did when I first entered into the "real world". It would have been nice to have been taught some of the stuff you'll learn in today's conversation in school. So, if you're a young professional, entering the workforce, or have an expendable entry level position, what can you do to hedge your bets? Well, I think a great start is to look at someone like Emily Mishler as a fine example of how to get yourself out there.Listen in as Andy and I find out how she's been able to reach the professional level she has as a late 20-something.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: How was Emily able to be as productive as she was during her college years? 11:08How can a young professional leverage their network to build something they'll be really proud of? 15:44What are some common misconceptions that younger people have about networking? 18:37If someone wants to begin networking, what would Emily recommend as a starting strategy? 23:03What advice would Emily have for those who have multiple passions and is having a hard time focusing on single passion because they feel if they focus on one that it will be on the expense of the others? 29:11How has Emily been able to pivot in 2020? 31:46What is Emily's favorite opening line for networking? 35:12Which one book, one film, and one song would Emily add to the national curriculum? 36:06What has she been learning about recently that she's super excited to implement? 36:36Is there something specific that each high school student must know? 37:49What's it mean to live a life of abundance? 38:29 ITEMS and PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Emily Online: Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, InstagramCohost: Andy DixPowered By: Uncover Your Personal MissionCobra KaiThe Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (Amazon Link)Eat Pray LoveDon't You Worry Bout a Thing - Stevie Wonder Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer.
