Swen Nater has one of the most unlikely paths to success. He was born in the Netherlands where he spent several years in orphanages. When he came to America as a boy, Swen fell in love with the game of basketball. Despite never playing in high school, he became an All-American at Cypress College, a two-time national champion at UCLA, and he played 12 years professionally. He is the only player in history to lead the ABA and NBA in rebounding. When Swen's playing days were over, he went on to coach Christian Heritage College to a national championship. In this interview, Swen talks about his difficult childhood and the journey that led him to play professional basketball. He shares the leadership lessons he learned from his legendary leader at UCLA – Coach John Wooden. Swen talks about Coach Wooden's approach to time management, giving feedback, discipline, conditioning, and the tremendous care he showed for his players. Swen finishes the interview by talking about the mentorship he received from Coach Wooden in the decades after playing at UCLA. Swen Nater still holds the California Community College single game rebound record at 39. After becoming a community college All-American, Swen played for two undefeated, national championship teams at UCLA. He went on to become the ABA Rookie of the Year, a two-time All Star, and led the league in rebounds and field goal percentage. When he jumped to the NBA, Swen led the league in rebounds, becoming the only player in history win both the ABA and NBA rebounding titles. After playing basketball, Swen Nater became athletic director and head coach at Christian Heritage College where he led the Hawks to a national small college championship. Swen is author of five books including "You Haven't Taught Until They Have Learned.” Swen has been inducted into the Orange County Hall of Fame and The San Diego Hall of Champions Hall of Fame. Swen is currently a buyer for Costco Wholesale.

Wrapping up his 33rd season as Fullerton College's skipper, Nick Fuscardo has devoted his heart and vast experience to Fullerton College as a coach and educator. In 2013, Fuscardo led the Hornets to an Orange Empire Conference title (32-15 overall, 15-6 OEC) and to the final four CCCAA State Tournament where Fullerton was the state runner-up. In 2015, the Hornets made it to the postseason and swept Cypress College in the first round. In the Super Regionals, Fuscardo's Hornets fell to Santa Barbara City College in a hard-fought series. The 2016 season saw the Hornets making it all the way to the Super Regionals after sweeping the #2 seed Glendale College Vaqueros. FC ended up falling to Cypress College in the Super Regionals in a close two games to one series. Fuscardo locked down his 500th win on a 3-2 come-from-behind 11 inning victory against Allan Hancock College on February 25, 2011. On February 2, 2016, Fuscardo won his 600th game as the Hornet Skipper on opening day at San Diego Mesa College 10-4. Coach Fuscardo also holds the Hornet record for most career wins with 665. It was an 8-3 win on March 18, 2010 against Irvine Valley College that gave Fuscardo his 488th win surpassing the previous mark set by FC Hall of Fame coach Mike Sgobba (487 wins). Fuscardo has led the Hornets to 25 wins or more in seven seasons, including 1988 (30 wins) and 2013 (32 wins - school record). He also has 16 seasons with 20 or more wins with the Hornets. Fuscardo has coached more than 70 players who have been drafted or have signed professional contracts, including New York Mets standout pitcher Steve Trachsel, San Diego Padre catcher Tom Wilson, Mitch Levier to the Oakland A's, and Jose Rojas of the Angles. Other recent draftees include outfielders Shane Carrier (Twins) and Austin O'Banion (Rangers) off the 2016 Hornets. Fuscardo is also proud of two other 2016 grads in Laine Huffman (shortstop for Long Beach State) and Justin Row (2nd Base for the University of South Carolina). More than 200 of Fuscardo's players have gone on to play baseball at the four-year level. Before coming to Fullerton, Fuscardo was the head coach for 13 seasons at nearby Troy High, where he led the Warriors to a 205-68 record, five Freeway League championships and 11 playoff appearances. Fuscardo was offered an assistant position at Cal State Fullerton under Titans Coach Augie Garrido in 1981, but instead, accepted a position as an assistant under Sgobba in 1982. Four years later, he was named the ninth coach in Fullerton's history. Fuscardo has been on the other side of the lines in community college baseball as well. He was the starting second baseman at El Camino College in 1962 and 1964, when he was an All-Metro Conference selection. During the 2004 season, Fuscardo was inducted into El Camino's Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia, where he started at shortstop and earned All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors. Coach Fuscardo was also named as the CCCBCA/Victory Athletics Coach of the Year in 2010. Fuscardo earned his bachelor's degree from West Liberty College in physical education and speech in 1968, and later received a Master's degree in Education Administration from Cal State Fullerton. Fuscardo is also an avid golfer and coached the Fullerton College women's golf team to a share of the Orange Empire Conference title in 2000 (Coach of the Year). During that time Hornet Golf had State Golf Championship finalists, including Hye Yoon Jung (1999, 2000) and 2-time finalist, Jeri Costello (2002), He recently served a two-year term as president of the California Community College Women's Golf Association. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

We are happy to welcome Obed Silva to The Hamilton Review Podcast - don't miss Obed's phenomenal story! Obed Silva was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and grew up in Orange County, California. Raised by a single mother who was often at work, Obed found comfort in the streets early on in his youth, joining a gang and dropping out of high school at age fourteen. After spending the next few years coming in and out of juvenile institutions, at age seventeen, Obed was shot in the back and left paralyzed from the waist down while participating in a liquor store robbery. A year later, he found himself in a courtroom facing attempted murder charges for shooting a rival gang member. At the time, he was looking at serving a life sentence in prison. Ultimately, he was sentenced to five years on gang-terms probation. It was during this time that he committed himself to a life of education, earning an associate of arts degree at Cypress College before attending California State University at Los Angeles, where he later earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing and a master's degree in English. Obed teaches English at East Los Angeles College. The Death of My Father the Pope is the first of his two memoirs to be published. He is currently completing his second memoir, In The Hands of My Mother. As Charlie takes a much-needed & well-deserved break from his daily grind, Producer Andrew takes the reins with an important analysis of Joe Biden & the Democrats' proposed education reforms. He walks through the motivation behind why tyrants always want to take over the education of children, and how the plans coming from AOC & Joe Biden are following that pattern. Next, an important update out of California regarding the Cypress College student who was berated by a rapid, anti-police professor last week. And finally, some good news—perhaps the public just isn't buying the new religion of wokeism. A new poll seems to indicate just how extensive the left's messaging failure may be. We discuss the California professor, at Cypress College who began berating student on a Zoom when he called police "heroes." The danger of picking a side with politics. Post Secondary debt, and the cost of living in California.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that has happened in politics or religion." -Karl Sagan A professor at Cypress College in California berated her student for a pro-police view. She said some nonsense -- and I mean real nonsense since it was false but had it been true it wouldn't have meant anything. It got me thinking about dumb arguments I hear both for good and for bad things. For example, a BLM supporter once murdered five Dallas police officers. But this is not a good argument that BLM is evil. No organization is accurately defined by its worst element. “Mudslinging - In politics, anything bad the opponent says about our candidate; in contrast, when our candidate does this, it is called 'making a good point.” –Richard Turner

Against all odds, Swen never quit believing in his dream of playing in the NBA. I hope you enjoy Swen's inspiring message about believing, putting in the work, and focusing on dreams we want to achieve. He even shares some dark times as he discusses the death of his daughter and living in being physically and verbally abused by his Step Dad. This is a powerful message, I hope you enjoy! Born in the Netherlands, Swen Nater immigrated to the United States at age nine through a series of events that ended on the Hollywood stage where Swen and his sister, Renee, were reunited with their parents and little brother, Ibo, on national television. Swen had never seen a basketball until he came to the US. As a junior in high school and the second-tallest student in the school at 6'4”, Swen tried out for the basketball team and was cut. He didn't try out as a senior. Grown to 6'9 and attending Cypress College, California, Swen again attempted to make the team and this time he was successful. However, he didn't play much his freshman year. But, after a lot of hard off-season work, Swen became a Community College All America, player of the conference, leading rebounder in the state setting a record of 39 (still a California record) in one game, and numerous other honors, the greatest of which was a scholarship offer to UCLA where John Wooden was head coach and they had already won six national championships. While with the Bruins, Swen played behind the great Bill Walton and saw limited playing time, two minutes per game. However, impressive performances at the Olympic trials and the Pizza Hut All Star Game resulted in Swen becoming the only player ever to have not started a college game and yet be drafted in the first round of the NBA. Swen chose the ABA, became Rookie of the Year, a two-time all star, and led the league in field goal percentage and rebounding. After three seasons, the ABA merged into the NBA and he jumped to the Milwaukee Bucks where he set an all-time record (still standing) for defensive rebounds in half a game at 18. He also pulled down 33 rebounds that game, still a Milwaukee Bucks record, and scored 30 points. That put him into the NBA's “30-30 Club,” in which there are only six members. Swen was traded to the Buffalo Braves for the first pick in the draft. After a year, the Braves moved to San Diego and became the Clippers where Swen led the NBA in rebounds and set the team record for double-doubles (double-digit point and rebounds in the same game) in a season. Swen is the only player that led both the ABA and NBA in rebounding. When traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, Swen backed up Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the team played in the NBA finals against the Celtics. After his basketball career, Swen Nater became head basketball coach at San Diego Christian College where he led his team to the NCCAA national championship. Next, he took a management position at the corporate office of Costco Wholesale in Washington Swen Nater knows how to personally connect with an audience. Through humor, wit, poetry, and personal stories, Swen motivates, encourages, and empowers others to fully realize their potential. If you want the very best for your team, Swen is the ticket. Swen is married to Wendy Ghiora, has two daughters, and proud “Papa” to two grandsons. Oh, yes, another grandchild is on the way. Swen, thank you for joining me and sharing your message with us. You are an amazing man and I wish you and your family all the best possible! If you are interested in hiring Swen to speak to your company, association, etc... Please visit his website to learn more. Also he has authored several books that you can locate on his site as well. https://www.swennater.me/home.html

Episode 17 of The Mental Game Podcast features former NBA and ABA star Swen Nater. Nater won two championships playing for the great John Wooden at UCLA. Now an author and motivational speaker, the Dutchman heeded Wooden's famous philosophy while serving as a practice player behind Bill Walton. Nater was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to the U.S. as a nine-year-old. Before stepping on American soil, he had never seen a basketball. Nater didn't play in high school after being cut his junior season but subsequently catapulted to All-American heights at Cypress College in California. After Nater's dominant season at Cypress, Wooden recruited the big man to UCLA, telling Nater he wouldn't play but that he'd learn, practice and make it to the pros. Nater then became the only player to never start a college game but wind up as a first-round NBA Draft selection. He played 12 professional seasons. On the podcast, Nater reflects on the myriad teachings of John Wooden, including the Hall-of-Famer's legendary attention to detail and high-octane practices. Also a former sports psychology professor, Nater delves into how each of us can apply Wooden's philosophy to our own lives. The past two-three weeks three Division 1 baseball players have been training in our facility after their season was cut short due to Covid19. A big thing for me as a coach and a father, these guys have made such a big impact on the younger players that are in our facility right now. They might not know it, but the kids are constantly talking on the way home or to the facilities about them and asking if they are going to be there again. The big thing that we talk about in our program is that everybody has a dream, but you have to understand and see what that dream looks like. Our kids in our program right now are getting the opportunity to see what that dream looks like by training with these D1 ball players. They are making such an impact on the kids training here and will be able to make an impact on kids throughout the country. Chase Sebby is a fifth year graduate student. He plays catcher at Ball State University in Indiana. Aaron Simpson is a senior outfielder at Ball State University. Justin Simpson played baseball the past two years at Golden West Junior College and next spring he will be playing with Central Michigan University. He is a middle outfielder. Show Notes: [01:24] The big thing that we talk about in our program is that everybody has a dream, but you have to understand and see what that dream looks like. [02:04] Chase Sebby is a fifth year graduate student playing catcher at Ball State University. [02:14] Aaron Simpson is a senior outfielder at Ball State University. [02:22] Justin Simpson played baseball the past two years at Golden West Junior College and next spring he will be playing with Central Michigan University. He is a middle outfielder. [03:01] They each share about their baseball journey from their youth all the way to college. [04:04] Chase always loved baseball growing up. He always put his all into it and was hard working. [05:16] Chase struggled with hitting, but he could always catch. [05:42] Aaron started playing baseball very early in life. His uncle played for the Dodgers and Angels. [07:01] Aaron has been around baseball his whole life and he loves it. [08:41] Justin also remembers growing up hitting at a very young age. [09:21] Almost his whole life he was playing two years up with his brother Aaron. [10:49] The competition in the house helped them both push to be better. [12:45] They preached to the kids that everyone has a dream. Jason wants them to understand what that dream looks like. [14:02] Baseball is a great sport because you don’t have to be big. [14:49] How did you get to the D1 level? [17:24] Chase moved from St. John’s University to Cypress College. Chase started opening day and became the starter for them. He almost hung up his cleats twice to put his degree first when Ball State called needing a catcher. [19:06] Everyone thinks it is easy, but to play at the D1 level is tough. [20:14] Aaron played multiple sports in high school. At the end of the season of his senior year, USD contacted him and he went as a walk-on. After a year in a half he transferred to Cypress College. Ball State reached out to him and he committed at his visit. [25:34] Justin was a switch-hitter in high school. His senior year things really started clicking. He started his college baseball career at Golden West University and will be playing ball next spring at Central Michigan University. [30:03] If you play well in the OEC you get out. Junior college baseball helps you to get looked at more than high school. [32:27] It is a process. Everyone is going to develop at different times and bloom at different times. [33:21] If you are a late bloomer, just because you have to go to a junior college don’t think that you’re not good enough or your baseball career is over. Set your goals high, but if it is not D1 right out of high school, don’t give up and keep working. [34:27] Chase is very passionate about going the junior college route. If he had to change something he would go straight to junior college, because he would have saved a lot of money, gotten the same experience or better and set himself up better for his future. [37:01] Aaron wishes he knew more about his swing earlier in his college career. If he could do it all over again he would go the junior college route because of all the options available. Junior college players get a lot of attention from D1 schools. [39:21] When you go the junior college route you give yourself the opportunity to go better than you could out of high school. You give yourself the opportunity to train and get stronger. [40:59] Giving yourself a couple years to go to a JC especially if it is close to your house, gives you extra time to mature and grow and sets you up for success down the line. [43:28] College coaches want to know how you are as a person. They want to know that you have a good attitude and play hard. [45:12] They share their advice with the younger generation. [45:22] Go to junior college. Don’t burn yourself out when you're a kid. Have fun! [45:59] Hit the weight room and grind. Learn about yourself. Don’t ever take your foot off the gas and keep working hard. [47:41] If you truly put yourself in the weight room and work hard it can do wonders for you. [50:18] Model yourself after these baseball players. It is more than baseball. [52:21] Get good grades. If you don’t get good grades you're not going to a good school. Guest: Associate Head Coach and recruiting coordinator, Sergio Brown. Sergio joined the Titans in July 2019 after coaching at the University of Arizona for four years. Coach Brown is currently in his third go around with Titan Baseball having served on the staff in 2001-03 and 2007-10. He also was a member of the 1995 Titan Baseball team that won the National Championship, the third of the four national championships for Cal State Fullerton. As the recruiting coordinator at Fullerton in 2009, Coach Brown reeled in the nation's fifth-best recruiting class. In 2010, his group was ranked eighth and in 2008 it was tabbed 14th nationally. Some notable names from those recruiting classes Coach Brown was able to convince to come to Cal State Fullerton include current Major Leaguers Matt Chapman, JD Davis and Michael Lorenzen. Before returning to Fullerton's campus last summer, Brown spent four seasons in Tucson coaching under Jay Johnson at the University of Arizona. Brown's second recruiting class at U of A in 2016 was ranked No. 4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Brown's 2018 recruiting class was ranked No. 3 in the country by Collegiate Baseball. The 2020 Arizona Wildcats, stacked with four years worth of recruits that Brown brought to Tucson, had a 10 - 5 record before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the college baseball season to a halt. Based on his recruiting success at Arizona and at Fullerton, it is no wonder why Titan Baseball fans were beyond excited with the announcement he will return to campus as recruiting coordinator and Associate Head Coach. In this conversation with Sergio Brown, we discuss the incoming freshman class of eight high school seniors that have signed national letters of intent. Coach Brown shares his path through youth baseball and eventually transferring to Fullerton, cutting his teeth in coaching under Scott Pickler at Cypress College and what he learned from other notable coaches in playing under Augie Garrido and coaching for Dave Serrano and Jay Johnson. Make sure to stay through the end to hear Coach Brown give a preview of what to expect out of his first recruiting class now that he is back at Cal State Fullerton.▶️ Make sure to visit our website: https://www.calstateomaha.com/▶️ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CalStateOmaha▶️ Follow Sergio Brown on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CSFCoachBrown▶️ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calstateomaha/▶️ Suggest a guest: CalStateOmaha@Gmail.com

He fought through his minor league journey and when his shot for making a big league roster arrived, he made it impossible for them to put him back on the bench. When he had a horrific accident nearly 10 years ago, he fought, quite literally, for his life with that very same tenacity. In October of 2016, Episodes 19 & 20 of the podcast featured my conversations with hall of fame baseball writer Ross Newhan. Yes. You're making the right connection there: Ross is David's dad. When I sat with Ross, the hope was always that he and David would become a Father/Son package on Daddy Unscripted at some point. That time has finally arrived.David had unique access to professional baseball players from a young age. He was born into a home with two baseball-loving parents and his interest in baseball never wavered. While his dad was working over the long and grueling seasons, David was busy bettering himself as a young baseball player. And he did it well. So well that he went on to play in college.Following a season at Cypress College, David went on to play for Georgia Tech in 1993. His teammates there included Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek and Jay Payton. To complete his collegiate play, he spent the next two years back in California, putting up huge numbers at Pepperdine University. He was drafted in the amateur draft later that year by the Oakland A's organization.David spent 3 years in the A's minor league system before being traded to the Padres. His career then went the way of many minor league journeymen: he has played at the minor and major league level for 10 different baseball organizations. It was with the Orioles that David saw his most significant success. In 2004, during a call-up to the big league club, he took the baseball world by storm. He even had a 20-game hit streak. One of the moments a lot of baseball people may remember most would be a hit off of Pedro Martinez in Fenway Park. He drove the ball deep off of the center field wall, Johnny Damon fielded it and threw it toward the infield. Out of nowhere, and for completely unknown reasons, Manny Ramirez cut off the throw going to the cut-off man. In a true display of "Manny Being Manny", the oddball play allowed for Newhan to get an inside-the-park home run off of one of the best pitchers to play the game. His career hit some turbulence in the seasons to follow; some significant injuries did not help. In 2009, David was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a player-coach for their Triple-A squad. That summer, while at his home in Oceanside, CA, everything would change.David's re-telling of the fateful day surfing in the ocean brought chills, even though I am no stranger to the story. Remarkable, amazing, astounding, unbelievable and miraculous: all of these words come to mind to describe what took place. As he dove unsuspectingly into a sandbar and fractured his C2 vertebrae. The injury is known by doctors as "the Hangman's fracture" -- it's the same injury that actor Christopher Reeve suffered that left him a quadriplegic. It is truly almost insane to think that David was not only somehow able to keep from drowning in the ocean, but he made it to shore and was able to walk home. If that's not enough to wow you, consider the fact that in 2011 David accepted an invitation to spring training with the San Diego Padres. After spending some time as the assistant hitting coach with the Detroit Tigers, David's path has brought him right back to California. He is about to start his third season as the Angels' minor league infield coordinator. I would be shocked if David isn't managing a big league team at some point in his career.I encourage anyone to complete the circle by listening to both of the Newhan generations' tales of life. It's very interesting to hear the connections between their stories. I know that sounds so obvious that I must be dumb for even pointing it out. But, with both of their... Marc Posner had a more than 20 year gap between starting college and earning his degree at Brandman University last spring. Although he didn't need a bachelor's degree when he started as a journalist — he worked at the Anaheim Bulletin, the Daily Pilot and the Los Angeles Times community editions before switching to public relations — he knows that anyone seeking those jobs now would need one. With the help of his academic advisor, Rebecca Warner, and supportive faculty members, he completed his degree in 18 months. In this second Brandman Speaks: Career Talk podcast, Posner talks about why he went back to college, what he had to overcome, how it has helped shape his current role at Cypress College and his plans for the future. More Brandman Speaks podcasts are available here or on iTunes. Transcript Cindy O'Dell: Welcome to Brandman Speaks: Career Talk. I'm Cindy O'Dell, communications manager at Brandman University. In this episode of our series focusing on the career choices of Brandman graduates, we'll hear from Marc Posner who completed his bachelor's degree a year ago. Marc is the director of campus communications for Cypress College, a community college in North West Orange County, California. Like many Brandman students, Marc had a big gap between when he started college and when he finished. But first we wanted to know how did his current career match his earliest career goals. Marc Posner: When I was younger, I really wanted to be a photographer. And you know I always had this sense of chasing after fire trucks, chasing after police cars, so I think I knew real early on that there was a journalist hidden in me. I just didn't quite grasp the writing part of it at the beginning. I had a neighbor who was a professional photographer for Rockwell, and he kind of talked me out of that path. And then when I took journalism classes when I got to high school, I was told you have to take journalism classes to be on the newspaper. I tried explaining I wanted to be a photographer and they said, yes and you still have to understand the fundamentals of news. And I really fell in love with writing, early in high school, probably my freshman year. O'Dell: Marc says he was lucky to get his first job in journalism, but like so many first jobs, it grew out of a personal connection. Posner: I attended classes at Fullerton College, enough classes I probably could have earned a bachelor's degree there if they had offered them. But I had amazing faculty. Julie Davy was my primary journalism instructor there, and I had a friend who was at the Anaheim Bulletin at the time and they were looking for a production editor so I stepped out of classes kind of directly into an editor's role and bypassed what a real traditional path starting with the journalist aspect of it. That paper ended up going from a daily to a weekly, and I ended up moving into a reporter role so that was a little bit more traditional from there. And then I had covered Golden West college as one of my stops in journalism and I heard their public information officer was leaving for another job and I called to wish her well and by the end of the conversation she had convinced me to apply for her job. So I made the transition from journalism to public relations in 1996, which is way early for that trend to occurred, and I'm extremely fortunate to have done it with you know essentially no college degree at that point. That really wouldn't happen today. O'Dell: Making the decision to finally complete a degree didn't come easily. Posner: Well it was really hard for me to go back. I had probably 18 years in higher ed at the point I decided to go back and complete my bachelor's degree and I had completed my associates along the way. I had a college president here at Cypress who had talked to me about completing my degree probably on a monthly basis...
