Rail advocates have launched a petition calling on the government to ensure the new Cook Strait ferries can carry trains. The Future is Rail spokesperson Dave Macpherson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Over the last two years, there have been a multitude of mechanical failures regarding the inter-islander ferries between the North and the South Island, which has brought great attention to the government. KiwiRail has requested a one-point-seven billion dollar funding request for a project to see the ferries repaired and ensure capacity for train transport as well. Unfortunately, the government has declined the funding request, which could seriously impact the travel potential of goods and services, not to mention general transport, between the North and South island. A plan to revive a passenger rail service between Christchurch and Dunedin could be back on track. Save Our Trains Otepoti-Dunedin met with the Otago Regional Council today asking for a feasilbility study on the service between the two cities along with a local communter service on the Mosgiel/Dunedin/Port Chalmers line. Hamilton isn't getting a fair share of the national transport spending. That's according to Hamilton city councillors Sarah Thomson and Dave Macpherson. Hamilton's population is growing at a rate of 2.1 percent, higher than Auckland or Wellington, but it gets less funding than the two major centres. Thomson spoke to Corin Dann.
