It was highlighted last night on The Working Group that David Cameron was caught out in a hypercritical stance based on his expectations for Israel and Iran. Duncan Grieve joined The AM Show this morning to talk about what Stuff will have to face as challenges when taking over the 6pm news on Three National fired hundreds of public sector workers today focusing on departments that impact our children. The question needs to be asked, why would we expect a better outcome from an alleged broken system, but having fewer people working for it? ================================================ Come support the work we're doing by becoming a Patron of #BHN www.patreon.com/BigHairyNews Merch available at www.BHNShop.nz Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/BigHairyNews Follow us on Twitter. @patbrittenden @Chewie_NZ
Shortland Street is now apparently in trouble. TVNZ has just confirmed it is reviewing whether it carries on with Shortland Street. It's still a popular show, but unfortunately it's very expensive to make and very expensive for TVNZ to buy. And given TV audiences are down to about a third of what they were about 15, 25 years ago -it won't be bringing in the advertising dollars it used to. It's not always obvious, when you're in the middle of a moment in history, just how important that moment is. Sometimes it only occurs to you afterward, when you look back, just how much changed at that moment. New Zealand is in a moment like that. We are eradicating in the next few weeks some of the biggest TV shows that we make in New Zealand- about New Zealand. Newshub, the AM Show, Ryan Bridge's due-to-be-launched 7 o'clock show, Newshub Nation, Paddy Gower Has Issues, Newshub late, Sunday, Fair Go, the TVNZ midday bulletin, the TVNZ late news and maybe even Shortland Street now- or maybe reducing how much it plays out in a week. And look, that doesn't mean there are no New Zealand-made TV shows left. There's still Seven Sharp, Motorway Patrol, The Casketeers- the list goes on. But the dynamics that are killing those other shows at the moment will, in the end, probably get the rest of them too. And what that means is that we see less and less of ourselves as Kiwis on screen. And that is a loss, because there is consensus that hearing and seeing your culture and your accent and your way of life reflected back to you on screen is affirming. It makes you proud of who you are. So remember this- because this isn't just another day in the media sector. This isn't normal, what's happening right now. In this moment of time, we are losing something we will probably never get back to the same extent, which is hours of Kiwi voices and faces on screen every day. And kids being born right now will probably grow up pretty much exclusively watching international content and hardly any New-Zealand made content. I'm not arguing this should be stopped. Frankly, if we want to keep New Zealand on screens, we need shows that New Zealanders want to watch, and that's clearly not happening. I'm just pointing out this is a big thing - and an unusual thing - that is happening right now. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The future of New Zealand's landscape is becoming clearer by the day, with confirmation that it will no longer feature one of the country's big two TV news networks. Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that all of Newshub's operations will be shut down, effective July 5. That includes the flagship 6pm bulletin, The AM Show, and the Newshub website. 294 staff are set to lose their jobs. Senior audio journalist Aaron Dahmen has all the details in a breaking news update.

The fallout from Newshub's closure continues today with not only news being on the chopping block, but now many other kiwi productions wondering where they stand. The Minister for broadcasting hasn't helped when it was made evident she doesn't know what Newshub does or who they supply news to Another one of National's hundred day plans is being enacted with the return of semi automatic weapons. We're going to pose the question why people make assumptions based on one interaction, one tweet, one interview which has become especially prevalent in interactions around Israel and Gaza. It would seem to us, that many commentators who are pro-Gaza condemn the actions of Hamas...but commentators who are pro-Israel seem to refuse the idea of admitting Israel has done any wrong. The National Party has a real issue with Pacifica representation with ZERO MPs from the Pacific Islands. This is the same National Party who claimed to be making a real effort to diversify their MPs but it seems the words fall well short of the actions. We picked the leader NZ's needed and many people saw him on Newshub nation this week ACT has announced they want performance-based pay for public executives who currently "have few incentives to cut waste". The Public Service Association was on The AM Show this morning and had to put up with Ryan Bridge who firstly doesn't understand the issue, and secondly wouldn't accept what the expert guest was offering. Minority fringe parties have started a campaign of crashing other candidate walk abouts to get exposure for their issues. We saw this on Saturday when Chippy was accosted by Freedom NZ. Things get a lot worse for Minister Michael Wood today with genuine questions now being asked if he can remain in cabinet. We learned yesterday the he was approached 5 times to sell his airport shares and many thought that he could be forgiven over what could be an oversight...but today we learn that he was in fact contacted 12 times making it much harder to sell the idea that this wasn't intentional. Christopher Luxon said today very clearly, almost too clearly, that he thinks anyone who is not on board with man-made climate change is not living in the 21st century. We acknowledge that we were asking this question yesterday and he has responded but still have nagging thoughts about what appears to be a very prepared answer hit several times to ensure the public is clear on his thoughts...so you believe him in his confession, or is this politicking where he's saying the right thing for the public. Paddy Gower went off on the AM Show this morning saying Luxon and National should "let Maureen be Maureen". It's both a bizarre rant and an astute observation all at the same time as Paddy seems to be saying Luxon should allow all those terrible views that he has within his party to roam free as people are entitled to their opinions. An advanced directive is a legal document by an individual of sound mind that gives them the choice and control over their care, which can include the right to refuse care to allow them to control how they die. This is in the news at the moment because Barbie Duffy had an advanced directive that should she be incapacitated she did not want her life to be extended medically. She wanted to refuse care in advance, in case she got to a point where she couldn't refuse due to be incapacitated. She had a stroke and was incapacitated but the medical team gave her medical help which sustained her life. Weeks later, when she could understand more, Barbie refused food and, in the end, fluids. She passed 58 days later, unmedicated until the last few days. Anger over the state of our highways deepened this summer - along with the potholes at the heart of constant claims the roads are “the worst they've ever been.” But political pressure and a startling stat in the media might have given people the wrong idea - and also undermined the push for lower speeds and fewer crashes.

Kanye 'Ye' West has another meltdown when he stormed out of a podcast when the host wouldn't acknowledge is was "the Jews" who were treating him badly as opposed to "corporate media" which is what the host was talking about. Seems that being thin skinned is a pre-requisite for running for President in 2024 an attribute that both Ye and his friend Donald J Trump has in spades Te Whatu Ora went to court today over an anti-vax couple who do not want their sick baby to have surgery unless doctors use blood from unvaccinated donors. Christopher Luxon this morning joined the AM Show and reflected on his first year as leader where he acknowledged that his low point was his "four day holiday in Te Puke"
Heeeeee's back! Donald Trump announces his bid today to get back into the White House in Jan 2025...it was as mad as you would think, and we'll have a look at it tonight Christopher Luxon's had to u-turn today as he forgot his policy in an AM Show interview then revealed his what he actually meant to say was already a u-turn on previous statement. Luxon has also had to backtrack significantly this afternoon as he appears to be blaming principals for truancy at their school leading to speculation about what National would implement when it comes to rewarding 'good' school and what metric they would use to measure that Tracey Barnett has been a contributing commentator and columnist for The New Zealand Herald, The Sunday Star Times, TV3, TVNZ, Newstalk ZB, bFM and Radio Live, among many others. The latest Newshub political poll says National and ACT would be able to form a government should the election be today...I'm not quite so sure about that and wonder about the methodoligy of this research. We'll take a look at that tonight The PM was on the AM Show this morning and Ryan Bridge can't hide his distain for Labour, he managed to spin everything to be bad about Labour...house prices going up blame Labour, House prices coming down that's because we can blame Labour for inflation and it goes on and on and on. We'll look at that tonight. Graham Philip is said to be a hero who has been unfairly targeted by the Government for his views. He's been in prison for a long time waiting for his opportunity to make his case for innocence before a judge telling his supporters, of which he has raised thousands of dollars, he would never back down. Graham Philip has become the darling of many Alt-Right. Q-Anon conspiracy theories as his 'tall tale' fit their narrative. Finally when the #FreeGrahamPhilip demand was put to the test...Graham Philip pleads guilty on all charges.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has responded to the constant rumours that she is on the verge or resigning...and moving to New Plymouth...on the AM Show this morning. We also have a look at the claim that no one wants to move to NZ made by one international recruiter COVID numbers are on the increase, and modellers are worried that with under reporting and testing the actual numbers could be much worse. Please note: due to the extreme heat in the UK on the day of recording, the audio cuts out at some points. Apologies! Pride Month is over and just in time since TB's left arm is rebelling about all the long hours at the laptop while launching the Pride Collection. She actually lost feeling in two fingers and it wasn't until heading to New Mexico without the laptop that the pain eased. Miranda threw TB under the bus in front a roomful of people at GCLS while they accepted a Goldie for The AM Show. It's hot as heck in Britain and Clare almost melted during the recording. She's just returned from two weeks off, but dove right back into work on her Christmas story because what better way is there to deal with the heat than to write about Christmas-y weather. Clare's launched a surprise Italian translation of Before You Say I Do. While at GCLS, many people told TB they enjoyed the show, but TB can't remember everyone's names. She wants to say thanks to everyone for being supportive in New Mexico and for being loyal listeners to the podcast. They crack on to the topic: half-year review. Clare did some digging to compare her progress to the goals she set at the beginning of the year, while TB winged it, which sums up their personalities. However, in a surprising twist, TB was much kinder to herself during the episode and it must be the result of the heat wave, making her softer, while Clare was much harsher on herself. Have a listen to learn where they've succeeded and when they pivoted. How was your first half of the year? Head over to lesbianswhowrite.com, and leave a comment on the episode. Or you can email them at: lesbianswhowrite@gmail.com. Next week they'll be back to dish about conferences. Happy listening! Some said the US Supreme Court's controversial ruling on abortion was none of our business, because we don't have the same legal or political set-up, let alone its religious cleavages and cultural conflicts. Opinion leaders in our media didn't agree - and provoked a significant political response.
Mark Richardson was a test batsman, who has gone on to become one of New Zealand's most sought-after broadcasters. He's one of New Zealand's best cricket commentators who's also been a host of the Crowd Goes Wild, Radio Sport breakfast, the Block, the AM Show and The Project. In this episode we talk about dealing with fame, arguing with Jacinda Ardern on live TV, his grumpy man persona on the Crowd Goes Wild, the full story of *that* viral video where Stephen Fleming 'abuses' him, his slowest-loser running races after tests, his over-the-top celebration after taking his first, and only, test wicket, the realities of working on Breakfast TV, if he believes everything he says and much, much more. This was a lot of fun and we had a ton of laughs across this one. Mark is such a complex, interesting, entertaining character and I hope we were able to showcase some of the ‘real' Mark Richardson here. Whether it was by design or sheer beginners' luck, Christopher Luxon's State of the Union speech in the weekend has exposed the government's Achilles heel. Mr Luxon's speech was broadly described as dull as he described returning to the tax regime that existed before Labour's control of the treasury benches. But in delivering it he declared that New Zealand was in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, 4 little words that bounced around yesterday. The Prime Minister was asked whether there was a cost-of-living crisis yesterday morning on the AM Show. She said there wasn't a crisis. She claimed wage growth, minimum wage increases and family tax credits are all helping mitigate it. It's tough but no crisis. Later, I asked Chloe Swarbrick whether there was a cost-of-living crisis. She preferred to call in an inequality crisis as prices and costs of day-to-day items affect the lower paid more. But she thinks there is a crisis. Neale Jones, a former Labour Party staffer admitted it was a crisis and people are doing it tough. But later I spoke with Grant Robertson who refused to call the current inflationary phase a cost-of-living crisis, preferring to say it's just the way the system works, it's cyclical but it will pass. But no way would he call it a crisis even though I pressed it on him 3 times. All this is important because of course it is a crisis. The cost of living in this country is far too high and has been for a considerable time and it's only going to go higher. Ordinary people are hurting and they've been hurting for a long time. The price of goods combined with the level of inflation and the rising interest rates are all factors. And right at the heart of it is housing prices, both to buy and to rent. And this is important. Two elections ago, Jacinda Ardern badgered the then leader of the National Party, Bill English, about the housing crisis in an election debate. She accused him of failing to acknowledge the elephant in the room, of failing to admit there is a crisis. Well, that housing crisis has only grown and now it's been joined by inflation levels not seen in generations. With the senior leaders of the Labour Party refusing to admit there's a cost-of-living crisis they are making the same mistake Bill English made. The people suffering at the cost of things will see them as either lacking empathy or out of touch with reality. It's the economy, stupid. This is a government who hates to admit they're wrong and on this one they're wrong and they are doing more damage to themselves refusing to admit that there's a problem than they would by just saying there is one. It's no wonder the first question today in Question Time from Chris Luxon, David Seymour and Simon Bridges was the same 7 words. Is there a cost-of-living crisis?
In this week's episode of Midweek Mediawatch, Hayden Donnell talks to Karyn Hay about an escalating series of media attacks on epidemiologists and layoffs at Newshub.
News organisations often report the results of informal polls they carry out by embedding surveys in stories or on social media. Mathematically minded people argue that in doing so, they're misinforming their audience members, and leaving them worse off.
How did the media break last Sunday's sudden news of a change to Covid-19 alert levels? And how did they cover the response, the science behind it and the decision to shift back down again - just as the arrival of the first vaccine doses fired up sceptics and social media - and kicked off a public campaign to get the facts out.
In July, Duncan Garner promised to go vegan for a year if Labour was able to govern alone at the election. Following a flood of messages from people looking to hold him to account, he's keeping his word.
Even before the first hints we had “turned a corner” with Covid-19, pundits were pumping up the volume on calls to loosen the lockdown and get more shops and businesses open again. But others in the media pointed out we don't know what's actually around that corner yet.
Tough new measures announced yesterday to counter COVID-19 pleased pundits who had pleaded for action in recent days. But the effects could also change the game for media in the long run. Meanwhile, news-we-can-use in our media gets ever-more important - as opposed to off- the-cuff opinion.
The media seized on the prospect of Jetsons-style Uber-in-the-air, but another airborne innovation that hit the headlines over-promised and under-delivered.
