The news has been filled with stories of layoffs at many of tech's biggest companies, so where are all those engineers going?Scott Carey, LeadDev's Editor-in-Chief, rolled up his sleeves, dusted off his skills as a trained journalist, and set out to answer that question. What he found was a simple question with a complicated answer. On this week's episode of Dev Interrupted, co-host Conor Bronsdon interviews Scott about the shifting job landscape, spotlighting the findings in Scott's pivotal article, “Where are all the laid-off software developers going?”Beyond the dynamics shaping the future of tech employment, the two discuss why non-traditional tech companies have difficulty hiring engineers [hint: it's not money!], whether or not the “boom times are over,” and the major trends LeadDev is seeing within the engineering community. Show Notes:Register today for LeadDev Berlin: https://leaddev.com/events/leaddev-berlin-2023Check out all of LeadDev's events at: https://leaddev.comContribute to LeadDev: https://leaddev.com/leaddev-call-proposalsSupport the show: Subscribe to our Substack Leave us a review Subscribe on YouTube Follow us on Twitter or LinkedIn Offers: Learn about Continuous Merge with gitStream Want to try LinearB? We had the pleasure of interviewing Holding Absence over Zoom video! From the moment of our first breath to the very last gasp we take before we die, we never stop growing as people. Every trial and tribulation, every heartbreak, success and failure, every scar, blemish and wrinkle is another brushstroke illuminating our life's unique canvas. As Holding Absence frontman Lucas Woodland sings on “The Angel in the Marble,” the closing track on his band's outstanding third album The Noble Art of Self-Destruction (out now via SharpTone Records), we are, each and every one of us, “a puzzle, a painting, a work of art in the making.”Holding Absence's new album is a testament to how our life's story is never fully told, with opportunities for change and growth found in every moment, from the depths of despair to the euphoria of our greatest loves. Whether adding flourishes of colour to an already picturesque painting, or chiselling away at the marble to reveal the beauty within, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction – the final act in a trilogy of records encompassing the first chapter of Holding Absence's career – speaks to how we are each an unfinished work of art with new meanings and qualities waiting to be discovered.A record Lucas describes as a form of self-therapy that sees him more candid and comfortable with his emotions than ever before, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction brims with a level of energy, excitement and sheer weight of feeling that is unparalleled in contemporary alternative music. Whether Lucas and his bandmates – guitarist Scott Carey, bassist Ben Elliott and drummer Ash Green – are performing relatable anthems about imposter syndrome and self-loathing like massive singles “Crooked Melody” and “False Dawn,” gushing love ballads (“Honey Moon”) or existential reflections on suicide (“Death Nonetheless”), the four-piece's approach on their new album is packed with the kind of vigour that saw Kerrang! label them as British rock's “new leading light” and Loudwire proclaim the Cardiff natives to be “the UK's most exciting new rock band.”Recorded at Canada's Jukasa Studios with producer Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow), The Noble Art of Self-Destruction builds further into the lore of Holding Absence that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. Taking influence from a varied array of sources including Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, sci-fi blockbuster Star Wars and the Japanese pottery art of Kintsugi, Holding Absence's new LP speaks to the desire of Lucas and his bandmates to create a project that exists as so much more than just a band.Having broken one million monthly listeners on Spotify and with top song “Afterlife” racking up in excess of 30,000,000 streams, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction looks a sure bet to bring even more success the way of Holding Absence, who've toured with the likes of Funeral For a Friend, Electric Callboy and You Me At Six. Previous LP The Greatest Mistake of My Life saw the band grace the covers of Kerrang! and Rock Sound, with glowing coverage from outlets including Loudwire, Alternative Press and Upset. The Guardian, meanwhile, praised Holding Absence as a band “making pop-rock anthems with rib-rattling drumming and mainstream appeal.”With that love only set to grow once The Noble Art of Self-Destruction is released, it's important for Lucas to emphasize how this album represents that what's come so far is just the beginning of Holding Absence's journey. We want to hear from you! While sitting in one of our favorite beer establishments, we noticed that they had some of their sours and a couple of their stouts. I wanted to try them all. But we knew that the sours would go very fast. One tapped out while we were there. Yet, we didn't know what I should have first. Sour or stout. We understand the method as it relates to bitterness and color. We know it's always the softer beers first, so starting with pilsners/blonde/amber then IPA, then red/brown ales, is normally the way to go. Dark/strong beers are always last. But where does sour fall into this line up. During this episode, we have the Perenial Artisian Ales SUMP COFFEE STOUT. It's an imperial coffee stout is made in collaboration with Scott Carey & Co. at South City's Sump Coffee. They chose a coffee from the "La Virgen" region of Colombia. We also have the Schmoojee Strawberry Blueberry Puffsicle Cotton Candy by Imprint Beer Co. Its pretty much made of cotton candy, strawberries and blueberries. The feature tune for this episode is a snippet of a song from the duo Jyroscope and Montana Mack from their album, Happy Medium. The track is Work. Make sure that you check them out on Bandcamp.

Holding Absence is a band that creates music that goes against the norms evident in Spotify culture. The creation of an album that reflects a journey for the listener is rare in this day and age. The culmination of emotion with a raw sound encompasses music that reflects the yearning of the soul. Throughout this process the listener goes on an emotional rollercoaster that sets Holding Absence apart from other bands in this period. Hailing from Cardiff, Wales and comprised of Lucas Woodland (vocals), James Joseph (bass guitar), Scott Carey (guitar), and Ashley Green (drums)—the band is on an upward trajectory that we believe will only allow them to pursue bigger and better things in the coming decade. Their latest single, ‘Gravity' only emphasizes the place Holding Absence has solidified for themselves. Currently signed to SharpTone Records, and soon to be releasing ‘Birdcage'; WCBG believes that the band is something special and we hope to share their message with all of you. Technology is constantly evolving, with each change bringing a need for clarity. IDG UK is responsible for influencing the most powerful tech buyers in the world — from business technologists to enthusiasts and everyone in between through titles such as Computerworld UK, CIO UK, CSO UK and Techworld. With a background in Journalism and having previously held writing and editorial roles in ComputerWorld and Techworld, Scott Carey is now the Group Editor of the IDG UK B2B editorial team. Responsible for all content across the organisation’s four B2B titles: Computerworld UK, CIO UK, CSO UK and Techworld, Scott writes for and edits these sites day-to-day, manages a growing team of writers and supports events and commercial editorial work.  Innovative startups have been disrupting many sectors with modern technologies, but one area that Scott has observed a particularly tight race against disruption is within the financial sector across the UK.  Fintech organisations have really disrupted banking, and the banks must keep changing to meet modern user expectations. Scott has a keen interest in observing the financial services sector navigate their way (and meet user demands) through the Digital age. Paul takes a deep dive into this topic with Scott to understand how innovation and Fintech disruptors have affected the technology strategy of the banks in the UK.  Listen or download this episode to hear Paul Slade and Scott Carey discuss the disruption of the Financial Services industry by Fintech businesses, innovation and the relevance of ‘buzzwords’ such as Machine Learning in the IT space right now. How CapitalOne uses Chef (https://www.computerworlduk.com/devops/why-capital-one-completely-re-architected-its-chef-stack-on-aws-3677848/): “[M]ore than 15,000 nodes for dev, QA, and production environments, all hosted on AWS” They like public cloud (quote from 2017 article): “About 40 percent of our production workload is on AWS now. At 40 percent we are larger than Netflix on the AWS footprint, it's huge. We are not running a hybrid model - our focus is everything on cloud. There are data centre-based applications being transformed, re-written, re-engineered, thrown out, to get to cloud." Also, WTF is Helm? See: this talk from Amy Chen is really good (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQX5nokoqrQ), and this other one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ1S2Gp47ng). OpenStack Summit So, it’s still NFV heavy with existing enterprise deploys? Plus, Mirantis us pushing for a CI/CD focus? Haven’t read the survey yet. Brief (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/24/networking_roundup_may_24/) Register (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/24/networking_roundup_may_24/) coverage (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/24/networking_roundup_may_24/): VMwware updates (https://www.zdnet.com/article/vmware-ready-to-release-new-openstack-cloud-program/), AT&T and others donate some code, Solarwinds adds in some more support. VMware likes NFV (https://www.zdnet.com/article/vmware-ready-to-release-new-openstack-cloud-program/): ‘VMware is targeting the telecom industry with this release. Gabriele Di Piazza, VMware Telco NFV Business Unit's VP of products and solutions, said in a statement, "VMware Integrated OpenStack 5 will enable customers to achieve the massive scale required to power Telco and private clouds globally, and address NFV and edge computing use cases as telecom networks evolve towards 5G."’ Shuttleworth gonna Shuttleworth (https://www.zdnet.com/article/ubuntus-mark-shuttleworth-pulls-no-punches-on-red-hat-and-vmware-in-openstack-cloud/#ftag=RSSbaffb68): “If you want OpenStack and Kubernetes support with vendor independence at a low price, Canonical is your company. If you prefer a partner, which offers a soup-to-nuts stack, but at a higher price, look to Red Hat. And, of course, if you're already wedded to VMware, you've made your choice. There's room for all these approaches to the 21st century cloud and containers.” Over on TechCrunch, in his layup (https://techcrunch.com/2018/05/24/openstack-in-transition/), Frederic Lardinois paints a picture of the current Story of OpenStack. “That current state produces fewer flashy headlines, but every survey, both from the Foundation itself and third-party analysts, show that the number of users — and their OpenStack clouds — continues to grow.” Mirantis, after $200m in funding, refocusing(?) on CI/CD with Spinnaker support, “shrunk from almost 1,000 employees to 450 today, but as Mirantis CEO and co-founder Boris Renski told me, it’s now cash-flow positive.” Boris: “I think that Spinnaker should become part of the Foundation. That’s the opportunity and I think it should focus 150 percent of their energy on that before it builds its own thing and before [Spinnaker] goes off to the CNCF as yet another project.” Caroline Donnelly (https://www.computerweekly.com/news/252441808/From-open-clouds-to-open-infrastructure-OpenStacks-evolution-continues) covers the quest to become a more general foundation for infrastructure stuff, started in 2015 with “The Big Tent” positioning. Side-note: Donnely’s and Lardinois’s articles are good example of doing good tech journalism (I mean, I always like more charts and TAM’s, but they don’t really do that over art Oath - could have also gotten a paragraph of “the kubernetes threat” backed up by usage momentum surveys - but, hey! - pretty good all around.). Relevant to your interests Coté’s three methods of dealing with grumpy people (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/14/devops_change_barriers/) when you’re digital transforming and DevOps’ing all the things, the The Register. All these GDPR emails. Oh for fuck’s sake! (Cf. Jon Collins interview (http://www.softwaredefinedinterviews.com/61).) What does Terraform do again? When is that company going to be acquired? Can IT finally deliver innovation without busting its own budget? Docker's CEO says yes. (https://diginomica.com/2018/05/22/can-it-finally-deliver-innovation-without-busting-its-own-budget-dockers-ceo-says-yes/) Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst On How He Plans To Win The Container Market (https://m.crn.com/slide-shows/virtualization/300104051/red-hat-ceo-jim-whitehurst-on-how-he-plans-to-win-the-container-market.htm). Docker, Inc. still on that cost take-out strategy (https://diginomica.com/2018/05/22/can-it-finally-deliver-innovation-without-busting-its-own-budget-dockers-ceo-says-yes/): “What we’re seeing at companies like MetLife or Northern Trust is they’re taking their app and infrastructure management cost, and cutting it in half. Let’s say that you can cut 50 million dollars out of your app and infrastructure management cost, which by the way, some of our customers are at. That’s 50 million dollars you can go spend on innovation. That’s not going to the CEO and saying look, I need another hundred million dollars in my budget. That’s freeing up 50-100 million dollars of your existing budget.” Bro. So the message is “Docker will cut $50m [annually?] out of your IT budget.” $12.5m a quarter in extra cash? That kind of shit could make quarterly numbers. Could that even be real? Bruh. Salesforce.com, Inc.
