Interview by Kris PetersThe annual Lagerfest traveling musical sideshow is legendary in this country for its combination of music and mayhem, with Lagerfest 2023 promising to continue that tradition.Joining hosts Lagerstein will be The Halo Effect, Beyond The Black and Devilskin, making this year's run a truly international affair. With Devilskin having been away from our shores for a couple of years, the hard-rocking Kiwi outfit is keen to return, with bass player Paul Martin joining HEAVY to chat about life and music and the bonus show at Froth & Fury Festival."Shit's getting real," he laughed. "To be sharing the bill with The Halo Effect for a start… holy crap. There's some legacy in that band. So it's just gonna be unreal to be a part of that bill and get to watch them every night. Beyond The Black are very exciting as well, and man, they've got huge numbers in Germany and around Europe. It's gonna be great, and of course Lagerstein. It looks intense and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun."We point out the name of the tour - Lagerfest - and the insinuation that the whole tour should be one big party."That looks exactly what's gonna be going on," Martin smiled. "Plenty of drinking out of boots and that sort of carry on from what I can see. It looks like a hoot. It just looks like fun, and it's a diverse lineup of very cool bands. The crowds are in for a big treat."In the full interview, Paul talks more about Lagerfest, their show at Froth & Fury, what to expect from Devilskin's shows, what has changed with the band since they were last out here, guitarist Nails being invited to be a Gibson Artist, next year's 10th anniversary of their debut album We Rise, their special plans for it, how Devilskin has grown musically since that album and more.

New Zealand based Polynesian metal outfit Shepherd's Reign were recently on our shores as main support on the highly successful Devilskin tour for their latest album Red.The band wowed audiences all over the country with their blending of traditional Polynesian and Samoan music and instruments with lashings of heavy metal to create a sound unidentifiably their own. They return to Australia in just under two months as one of the headliners of Blacken Open Air 2022, with drummer Shaymen Rameka joining HEAVY to talk bout that show and more from the Shepherd's Reign camp.We start by asking how much Shepherd's Reign actually know about Blacken Open Air."We know there's a lot of pretty hardcore, extreme metal coming out of that festival,” he laughed. “I'm just totally looking forward to hearing it all on the big sound system."With three days worth of live music to listen to, Rameka admits he has spent a fair bit of time checking out some of the other bands to prepare for an inevitable cavalcade of metal."Over the last year I have been checking out some of the bands,” he admitted. “I'm not too much into the extreme side of the metal, but I can always appreciate it. I know it takes the guys a lot of hard work to work their magic and just the musicality and musicianship is right up there."In the full interview Shaymen talks more about what Shepherd's Reign will bring to Blacken Open Air, the recent tour with Devilskin, the band's music and how they get the blending of sound and culture right, upcoming music and more.

If you're a New Zealand metal fan, there's a high possibility you'll know who Paul Martin is. Front New Zealand's longest standing metal radio shows, The Axe Attack (since 1987) these days on iHeartRadio, Paul is a household name in local metal scene and is an integral part in pushing NZ original music as well as hosting some of the world's greatest metal heroes through his show. Adding an additional layer to Paul's involvement in music is his two bands Devilskin and World War Four. Both bands have seen Paul support bands such as Black Sabbath, Down, Black Label Society, Slash, Alice Cooper and Halestorm earning considerable success. Devilskin specifically has become one of New Zealand's most popular rock/metal bands hitting gold and platinum record status, playing large clubs across New Zealand and also claiming several European tours and a 2017 appearance at UK's Download Festival. They are busy! Through LORD's tours to New Zealand over the years we have been exposed to Paul and his reputation in the local scene. Paul has helped our band (and countless others) get to the ears of the Kiwi metal fan. It seems that many of us have a lot to thank him for and the number of fans he is bringing music to through his show or onstage continues to grow. Paul and I briefly caught up to talk about the history of The Axe Attack, his long commutes to Auckland every Sunday to do the show, the incarnation of Devilskin and the work ethic and accolades that the band has celebrated since forming in 2010.
