POPULARITY
This episode we discuss Lucio Fulci's giallo that in many ways makes a wonderful alternative to the very popular Argento films. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069019/
This week we talk Kyle's double feature picks: "Don't Torture a Duckling" (1972) and "The Beyond" (1981). Or, Wacky Experiments Volume III! The gals are talking about two terrifically-named experiments this week. Bonnie tells us about the Monster Study, where orphans were emotionally abused to induce stuttering, and Anna talks about Operation Midnight Climax, part of the CIA’s Project MKUltra series of mind control experiments. And fittingly for some stories about bona fide Batman supervillains, this episode includes a promo for Capes on the Couch, another excellent podcast!

It's our fourth episode, just in time for Halloween! This week we discuss the use of religion in horror films, the why, how, and when of usage. We do this through an American film looking at the history of puritanical beliefs of the Salem Trials era (The Witch), a Catholic Italian criticizing the Church (Don't Torture a Duckling), and a Thai Buddhist commentary on retribution (Phobia 2). We also discuss a Vice article (link below) and why we disagree. Just so you know, SPOILERS ABOUND, and if you care certainly watch these films first. The Vice article: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/gqkj84/why-are-so-many-horror-films-christian-propaganda
This week was Cory's pick. He chose the 1972 Lucio Fulci Giallo flick, "Don't Torture a Duckling." This is a really odd film, but it's definitely a memorable one. Check out the film and let us know if you agree with our opinions. It's on Amazon Prime if you want to follow along with us. This month the Devils take a characteristically speedy jaunt through the giallo work of the directors listed on Cliff's favourite t-shirt: Mario Bava, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and Sergio Martino, plus a few other notable films from the genre's heyday. Our featured movies are Don't Torture a Duckling and Deep Red, we play another round of Scary Noises, Luke and Sarah give their thoughts on new cinema releases Hellboy and Greta, and perhaps best of all, we've got a new favourite sound clip: the "Mrs Johnson" guy.
Ciao, giallo fans! Lori and Aria are back with another episode of Queer Giallo Cult. This week the discussion focuses on the movies where the killers target and punish (a very normative sense of) femininity. Movies discussed are "What Have They Done to Solange?" (1972), "Torso" (1973), and "Don't Torture a Duckling" (1972).THIS EPISODE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIES DISCUSSEDAudio clip from "All Women Are Bad" by The Cramps See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, we look at the Italian Giallo film, “Don’t Torture a Duckling” followed by the short film, “Don’t Stare” and then the recent horror film, “The Possession of Hannah Grace.” News Features: 1. A heads up that the Texas Frightmare Weekend is coming up May 3, 4, 5, 2019 in Dallas Texas. Their 14th annual event will feature all the vendors, screenings, previews, panels, and cosplay fun that major conventions have, as well as featuring guests Sam Raimi, Robert Englund, Meatloaf, Tim Curry, Bruce Campbell, and many others. They have a great website with full details and pricing. Sounds like one worth checking out if you’re in the area or want to make a pilgrimage. https://www.texasfrightmareweekend.com/ 2. If you ever dreamed of being in the world of The Evil Dead, you get a chance. An officially licensed escape room based on The Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn will be opening July 2019 in Seattle Washington. Hourglass Escapes will be adding the third escape room to their top-rate facility that already features the themed rooms Rise of the Mad Pharaoh and Tales of the Ghostly Galleon put together by professionals from the theme park and movie industries. Their fully immersive escapes are loaded with special effects and actors who guide the process, and the new Evil Dead attraction should to be top notch. https://hourglassescapes.com/games/evil-dead-2-dead-by-dawn/ 3. IT 2 star Jessica Chastain recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show and made the spoilerish claim that the upcoming sequel has the bloodiest scene ever in a horror movie. And it involves eyeballs. After the river of blood washing down the hallway in The Shining and Lionel lawn-mowing his way through a mob of undead, can It 2 really have the bloodiest? It just makes us want to see the movie more to find out for ourselves. September 6, 2019 is the release date. https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1094534/IT-2-star-horror-movie-Pennywise-Jessica-Chastain-release-date-clown-stephen-king-book 4. “The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs” will be coming to the Shudder networks as a new limited series March 29, with a new episode every Friday. This is a return of the host, with a double-feature of horror movies presented along with sometimes-crude humor, inside stories, and some guest hosts that will join him for the episodes. It promises to be a lot of fun. There’s a teaser trailer on YouTube, and his first season is still available on Shudder if you’d like to check that out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml2BWye6v-8 https://www.shudder.com/series/watch/the-last-drive-in-with-joe-bob-briggs/4285429?season=1 5. Don't miss it Freaks and be sure to download all the gooey mayhem on itunes, Stitcher, and Spreaker.
Underworld Duck and a Lizard Sandwich Inspired by the late Harry Dean Stanton, whether it's fearlessly wading into the debates over controversial new releases or creating singularly unappetising food metaphors, we don't give a duck. In Off the Shelf, Rob and Graham review a double-bill of Italian horror from Arrow with Mario Bava's "Kill Baby, Kill" (a.k.a. Curse of the Dead) and Lucio Fulci's "Don't Torture a Duckling", separated by Ryan looking at Eureka's U-certificate but no less eccentric "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Crikey!
