The Corpse Bride, Coraline, Frankenweenie and Isle of Dogs have all taken shape thanks in part to the creative hands of Kiwi animator Antony Elworthy. He's also part of the Christchurch animation studio Stretchy, which is behind the kids' animated series Kiri and Lou. Antony's now lent his talents to the written word - with the release of his debut novel The Strange and Unlikely Tale of Montgomery, the Mysterious Bird of Mystery. It centres on the tall stories told by a grandfather to his grandson - and one in particular that involves his work as a magician with a malevolent feathered sidekick.

Happy Halloween from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about Tim Burton! The man! The brand! The artist! The director! The lothario (complimentary)! The B-Sides today include Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Frankenweenie. Our esteemed guest is Maria Lewis, “best-selling author, screenwriter, film curator and pop culture etymologist currently based in Australia.”  As Beetlejuice Beetlejuice still rakes in money in theaters, we discuss Burton's influence, whether or not he's actually a good director (something Burton himself has questioned in the past), his best films and his worst films, his inspirations, and the love-and-hate relationship with Disney from the very beginning of his career. There is also the observation that most of Tim Burton's films are some version of Alice in Wonderland. Including, ahem, Alice in Wonderland. Also discussed is Maria's very cool podcast “The Phantom Never Dies,” about the superhero serial character The Phantom. Another important mention is Milicent Patrick, the woman who designed the creature from the Creature from the Black Lagoon film. And finally, we take the time to appreciate the incredibly underrated Australian film director Simon Wincer.  Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide.

This week, for our first of two extremely-belated Halloween episodes of the year, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1984 to cover one of the earliest live-action efforts of a rising young talent by the name of Tim Burton, who in this landmark early work explored many of the very same themes and motifs that would later become ubiquitous in his filmography, including the juxtaposition of mundane suburban life with horror-fantasy tropes, the celebration of misunderstood outsiders over bland conformists, and of course cool-looking German expressionist gothic art design absolutely slathered all over the screen. At the time it was a unique, exemplary work of art from an obvious future auteur, so naturally Disney buried it like an undead dog's bone and only released it eight years later after its director made freakin' Batman. Join Tony Goldmark, Haley Baker Callahan, David Ganssle and Gaby Tyrrell as they obnoxiously point out that it's Frankenweenie's monster, not FRANKENWEENIE (1984)!  Watch the extended cut of Frankenweenie (1984) on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2rcPe9sojpc?si=0aP7tzSHgih91ki_&t=352 Read my livetweet of Frankenweenie (1984): https://twitter.com/efvdpodcast/status/1448840318128852997  Watch Diamanda Hagan's review of Life Returns, featuring me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k75BYiDdWec  Check out my guests' stuff! Happy Halloween!Autistic hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, are talking all things Tim Burton! While he hasn't shared about a formal autism diagnosis, Burton publicly identifies as Autistic, which is no surprise to the Autistic community, based on his creative style, tendency to work repeatedly with the same actors he connects with, and stories that center misunderstood outsiders. Burton was fascinated by classic monster movies as a kid and felt he related to the "monsters" for being different—something Autistic individuals know all about! Growing up, he enjoyed dedicated, creative expression by making homemade monster movies.Burton struggled in school and was considered a bad student. He may have had dyslexia (or, perhaps, a similar reading difference that is unique to the Autistic hyper-connected brain) which made reading difficult.“I've seen some people who are genuinely dyslexic—because it's an issue with rods and cones and they can make glasses and all this other sort of stuff—but, a lot of autistic people, our ‘meat eyeballs' don't move as fast as our lightning fast brains. So we sort of skip over words and letters and our brain fills in the blanks, and it may not be accurate.” —MattBurton had trouble connecting with his father who didn't understand his creative interests. His mother owned an artsy cat-themed gift shop which likely influenced him as a child and his later career as an adult. After being fired by Disney for making Frankenweenie (considered too dark), Burton connected with Paul Reubens who asked him to direct Pee-Wee's Big Adventure based on seeing Burton's short film Vincent. Many of Burton's films feature misunderstood outcasts and themes of feeling like a misfit (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, etc). He gravitates towards other Hollywood eccentrics and outsiders—many of whom we think might also be on the autism spectrum.Burton works repeatedly with the same actors like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter who "get" his Autistic communication style. He has called his relationships an "unwritten language."“But I never really thought of it from like, if you have an autistic communication style, there will be fewer people who naturally get you, just percentage wise. And so when you find people who get you, whether they're allistic or autistic, it's like, can I stick with the people who get me? Because it's so tiring otherwise.” —AngelaBurton has sometimes struggled creatively when pressured to make big moneymakers, but when left to his own creative process, he makes movies that become wildly popular cult-classics with strong followings, especially in the Autistic community.*TW: This episode was recorded prior to the allegations against Danny Elfman broke.  TACP stands with victims of assault and wish the Autistic community comfort and healing as we grapple with our feelings, both individually and collectively.  Please, take care.At 06:40 Angela figures something out—what is it, and what clues from Matt led her to that discovery?* Silent horror film that influenced Burton's work: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) on YouTube: 51 minutes* Tim Burton's Wikipedia page.Related episodes…Who invented motion pictures? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 29, 2023 is: rubric • ROO-brik • noun Rubric is a somewhat formal word that is most often used to mean “an established rule, tradition, or custom” or “something under which a thing is classed.” In the latter use it is a synonym of category. // Despite their widely divergent tones and levels of age appropriateness, Friday the 13th, Gremlins, and Frankenweenie all fall under the general rubric of horror movies. See the entry > Examples: “Contrary to all the messages urging parents to do more for their kids, a growing number of research studies point to the advantages of doing less. Much of that research comes under the rubric of autonomy-supportive parenting, which essentially means allowing and encouraging kids to take greater charge of their own lives and do more for themselves.” — Peter Gray, Psychology Today, 30 May 2022 Did you know? Centuries ago, whenever manuscript writers inserted special instructions or explanations into a book, they put them in red ink to set them off from the black used in the main text. (They used the same practice to highlight saints' names and holy days in calendars, a practice which gave us the term red-letter day.) Ultimately, such special headings or comments came to be called rubrics, a term that traces back to ruber, the Latin word for “red.” While the printing sense remains in use today, rubric has developed other meanings over the years, and is most often encountered in its extended sense referring to a class or category under which something is organized.
