The Rocketeer is a 1991 American superhero film from Walt Disney Pictures. Her name was Lillian Millicent Entwistle, “Peg” to her friends. She was born in 1908.At the age of 19, Peg married Robert Keith, 10 years older than she. Then she discovered that he had been married before and had a 6 year-old son. The couple was soon divorced.“I'll move to a new place and get a new start,” she thought. “Goodbye, New York. Hello, L.A. I'm going to become an actress.”But hopes and dreams are fragile things and hearts are easily broken.At the age of 24 “She decided she'd failed,” says David Wallace, author of Hollywoodland. “She was very dejected and one day in 1932 she came up to the Hollywood sign, found a maintenance ladder by the ‘H,' climbed up to the top and presumably took one last look over the city she had failed to conquer, and jumped.”Her body was discovered two days later by a hiker.A handwritten note was found in her purse. “I am afraid I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain.”A letter arrived at her home on the same day her body was discovered. It was from The Beverly Hills Playhouse. They wanted her to star in their next production.Are you ready for this? Mais saviez-vous qu'elles n'avaient pas toujours été associées au septième art ? Revenons sur leur origine et leur transformation. Tout commence en 1923, en plein essor de l'immobilier dans les collines de Los Angeles. Ces lettres n'étaient pas destinées à promouvoir le cinéma, mais un projet immobilier appelé "Hollywoodland". Le promoteur Harry Chandler voulait attirer les acheteurs vers un nouveau lotissement luxueux. Pour marquer les esprits, il décide de faire ériger une immense enseigne composée de lettres blanches de 15 mètres de haut, fixées sur des poteaux métalliques. Le mot "Hollywoodland" s'étendait sur plus de 110 mètres de longueur et était éclairé par des milliers d'ampoules, visibles de très loin. À l'époque, l'enseigne devait être temporaire et retirée après un an. Mais avec l'essor d'Hollywood comme centre de l'industrie cinématographique américaine, elle est rapidement devenue un symbole du glamour et des opportunités qu'offrait la ville. Cependant, avec le temps, les lettres ont commencé à se dégrader, et en 1949, la Chambre de commerce de Hollywood a décidé de restaurer l'enseigne. C'est à ce moment-là que le suffixe "land" a été retiré, ne laissant que "Hollywood", pour représenter non plus un projet immobilier, mais tout un univers. Dans les décennies suivantes, les lettres ont connu des hauts et des bas. Dans les années 1970, elles étaient dans un état si lamentable que certaines s'étaient effondrées. En 1978, des célébrités comme Hugh Hefner et Alice Cooper ont lancé une campagne pour les sauver. Grâce à des dons, chaque lettre a été reconstruite en acier, devenant plus robuste et résistante. Aujourd'hui, l'enseigne est protégée comme un monument historique, et son accès est strictement réglementé. Elle est non seulement un symbole du cinéma, mais aussi un rappel de l'évolution de Los Angeles, passée d'une simple ville à la capitale mondiale du divertissement.
