John Humphrey and Aaron Alexander take a trip to Zamunda for the ultimate classic comedy experience—Coming to America! Directed by John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), this Eddie Murphy-led masterpiece follows Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek) as he embarks on a journey to Queens, New York, to find a woman who will love him for who he truly is. Alongside his hilarious and ever-loyal best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall, Harlem Nights, Black Dynamite), Akeem trades his royal lifestyle for a humble job at McDowell's, the fast-food restaurant that totally isn't McDonald's, all while attempting to win the heart of Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley, The Haves and the Have Nots). With an unforgettable supporting cast that includes James Earl Jones (Star Wars, The Lion King) as the commanding King Jaffe Joffer, John Amos (Good Times, Die Hard 2) as Cleo McDowell, and Madge Sinclair (Roots, The Lion King) as Queen Aoleon, the film delivers some of the most quotable moments in comedy history. We react to all of the legendary scenes, including Akeem & Semmi Arrive in Queens, The Barbershop Scene, The First McDowell's Encounter, Akeem Meets Lisa, Sexual Chocolate's Hilarious Performance, The Stolen Money Scene, The Bathing Scene, Semmi's Expensive Lifestyle, The Subway Proposal, and The Grand Wedding Reveal! This film not only gave us some of the best comedic performances but also introduced multiple iconic characters played by Murphy and Hall, showcasing their legendary range. And let's not forget the incredible soundtrack and cultural impact that made this film a staple of ‘80s cinema. Plus, with the sequel Coming 2 America continuing the story, we reflect on the franchise's legacy and how it holds up today! "I always looked at this as like, I'm trying to make Black Ocean's Eleven or I'm trying to make a contemporary Harlem Nights or contemporary Uptown Saturday Night, which were like this kind of like star-laden projects," says Ogbonna about FIGHT NIGHT. "And what you need is gravity. You need somebody at the center that pulls everybody in, you know what I mean?" Shaye Ogbonna is an accomplished writer and producer for both television and film. He has written on an array of premium series including THE CHI, as well as two highly-anticipated HBOMax series: THE PENGUIN from Matt Reeves, and DUSTER - a 1970s crime thriller exec-produced by JJ Abrams. Currently, Shaye serves as Creator, Writer, Showrunner, and Executive Producer of the star-studded limited series FIGHT NIGHT: THE MILLION DOLLAR HEIST, starring Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, Don Cheadle, and Terrence Howard. The true-crime series tells the story of how an armed robbery on the night of Muhammad Ali's historic 1970 comeback fight ultimately transformed Atlanta into the “Black Mecca.” In this interview, we talk about his early career and influences, his decision to focus on television as a medium for storytelling, the future of limited series, his new show FIGHT NIGHT, the importance of telling local stories, and more. In the early 1980s, a young Eddie Murphy stepped into the national comedy scene and revitalized a flaccid “Saturday Night Live.” His career since then has been a fascinating reflection of how white American audiences relate to Black comedy. He was the lone Black man in fish-out-of-water movies like “Beverly Hills Cop,” then pivoted to movies like “Harlem Nights” and “Coming to America” with largely Black casts, catering to Black audiences. And though his early works like “Eddie Murphy Raw” were famously edgy, it was later family-friendly stuff that brought his career back from a slump… and seemed to make him more palatable to white folks. On this episode, NPR's TV critic and media analyst Eric Deggans joins host Michelle Tyrene Johnson to explore what Eddie Murphy's career can teach us about how Black humor fits into American culture.

A Gay & His Enby is a podcast where we talk about everything we love in terms of media and pop culture; everything thats gay and gay adjacent; basically all the conversations we have in our living room we are now putting in front of a microphone and on the internet for you. In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? Presenting The Class of 1989, a new limited-run series from pop culture critics Len Webb and Vincent Williams, hosts of the acclaimed Black cinema podcast The Micheaux Mission.
