This week Devo is trying to hype us all up with some much needed positive reinforcement. Let's throw him overboard. Meanwhile, Carla Ulbrich and Bill Larkin are getting demented, Phineas and Ferb are introducing their friend, Perry the Platypus, and Max Ziegfeld loves corn. He's the bearded, top hat-wearing radio DJ that made Weird Al famous and Shaving Cream naughty. This week we look back on all the laughs. Dr. Demento was filling the radio airwaves with funny songs for years. His real name is Barrett Hanson, but we all know him as Dr. Demento. During the 70s and 80s he had a syndicated radio show where he played many song parodies, stand-up, comedy, routines, and recorded skits. But that really doesn't even come close to describing all of the crazy kinds of humor he had on his demented show. This week, Jay and Shua revisit some of their favorites and talk about what made it so funny. Tom Lehrer was an American songwriter and satirist whose songs have been making audiences laugh for decades. His dark humor and sharp wit made people think about some heavy issues of the day, from war to politics. Let's learn about Tom Lehrer on Enjoy Stuff - A TechnoRetro Podcast If you listened to the Dr. Demento show in the 80's, you probably heard some of the comedy stylings of Tom Lehrer. His clever song parodies paved the way for greats such as Weird Al Yankovic. Jay and Shua take a look at his work and why we love it. News -Frogger Game Show Trailer Released by Peacock -Get ready to get down to 3 tunes inspired by Lucky's magical charms. -Starbucks PSL Makes Its Earliest Return Ever -Charlie Watts: Rolling Stones drummer dies at 80 What we're Enjoying Shua checked out the dark, thought provoking, Arthurian legend The Green Knight. If you dig thinking about the movies you watch and tons of symbolism you might want to check it out. Jay just finished Andy Weir's “Project Hail Mary” book. Another fun one that he has been enjoying. Enjoy Music Tom Lehrer has an educational background in math, but he is best known for his songs he performed in the 50's and 60's. It was a time in history that our culture really needed some humor to help us understand and cope with some pretty nasty stuff happening in the world. Even the threat of World War III wasn't off limits to Lehrer's wit. Plus, he accessed the deepest, darkest, depths of his imagination by writing about some truly disturbing topics like Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. He once said, "If, after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." He even wrote songs that helped educate a generation of Electric Company viewers. We learned important rules like Silent-e, L-Y, and O-U (The Hound Song). Let's check out Tom Lehrer. Have you ever heard a Tom Lehrer song? Did we inspire you to check him out? Let us know in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

Weird Al Yankovic has a huge and fanatical fan base for good reasons. He’s a five time Grammy winner and member of a rare group of musicians (U2, Michael Jackson, Madonna Kenny G,) with a top 40 hit for four decades running. Self-proclaimed “Weird Al obsessive” Lin Manuel Miranda credits Al as an inspiration for the hit musical “Hamilton.” It began when a door to door accordion salesman called on Al at the tender age of six. Al was unaffectionately nicknamed “Weird” in school, yet he embraced his weirdness and earned millions of fans. And did Al’s mom really serve him a bowl of sauerkraut every morning and watch him on the school playground through a pair of binoculars? Discover a fascinating side of Weird Al in this fun episode. Al recently dropped his record label and is blazing into the unchartered mediascape. Find out what’s next from the brilliant and inimitable Weird Al!
They talk a little Dr. Demento, Weird Al, and Bob Rivers. Bill recaps some COVID numbers from the CDC.

Wind up your radio dementites and dementoids—the doctor is in! This extra-special two-hour demented punk extravaganza is an audio oddity unlike anything else! An eclectic mix of artists from the world of classic and contemporary punk/indie/alt-rock have assembled, along with special guest stars from film, TV and more, to pay homage to radio icon Dr. Demento (a world renowned institution who has championed novelty music and its creators since the 1970s), for this mind-blowing compilation. Over thirty different, never before released, all-new ‘punk' cover versions of ‘mad music and crazy comedy' songs famously heard on the airwaves of the legendary “Dr Demento Show”—have been intermixed with ‘wild card' tracks showcasing some incredible, newly ‘demented' versions of punk-rock classics! The result is a uniquely original, highly entertaining, modern day homage to Dr. Demento's classic radio show, and its undeniable impact on popular culture. This bizarro broadcast from beyond the fringe is hosted by Dr. Demento himself, offering up interesting factoids and anecdotes between songs, with celebrity guest ID spots, creatively crafted bumper segments, and more ‘demented' surprises tying it all together into an unconventional take on the traditional radio show format. Over two-full hours, a total of 64 tracks—all created specifically for “Dr. Demento Covered in Punk”! Both the two-disc CD, or three-disc vinyl LP come with an equally entertaining full-color booklet jam-packed with extensive liner notes and quotes personally written by the artists, a foreword by producer John Cafiero (Misfits, Ramones, Osaka Popstar), an Afterword by Dr. Demento, as well as facts, photos, and an array of dynamic paintings and illustrations created specifically for the project by a team of visual artists spanning the world of comic books, classic punk-rock album covers, Topps Trading card series, Mad Magazine and more. Joined by everyone from the Misfits, Joan Jett, Fred Schneider of the B52s, to “Weird Al” Yankovic, the late Adam “Batman” West (in one of his final performances), and Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner—(to name just a few), the Doctor is in…and he's ‘Covered in Punk'!! About Dr. Demento: The Dr. Demento Show has been celebrating ‘mad music and crazy comedy' on the airwaves playing everything from Spike Jones to Frank Zappa for nearly five decades. Responsible for introducing the world to its #1 most requested song of all time, “Fish Heads”, and launching the career of the most successful artist in the entire history of funny music—“Weird Al” Yankovic; the world-famous Doctor's influence on pop culture has earned him induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame, a documentary feature film on his life and career currently in production, and even an appearance on The Simpsons. #DrDemento #KY102 #997KY #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #TMobile
