An episode of giant proportions! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * To kick off the episode, we're diving into the origins of They Might Be Giants back in 1982 in Brooklyn—and of course, we have to talk about their legendary Dial-A-Song fan hotline, which they kept running all the way until 2008!* TMBG is entirely supported by their fan club rather than a record label—and as a special perk, they create a personalized song for each paying member!* Also, their whole fan base is definitely 90% autistic. * Both Johns of TMBG have openly identified as neurodivergent, with John Linnell specifically describing himself as autistic.* Next, we dive into the autistic coding in certain TMBG songs—like Upside Down Frown, which seems to be about masking, and Dr. Worm, which is absolutely a special interest anthem.* Rejection sensitivity, pattern matching, burnout, info-dumping, and sensory overload are all major autistic themes that show up throughout their music, woven into their lyrics in a way that feels both deeply personal and incredibly relatable.* A lot of their work also features history-infodumps, with one of the most famous examples being their 1990 hit Istanbul (Not Constantinople)—a perfect example of their love for educational, hyper-specific storytelling.* Finally, we explore the deep autistic connection and sense of community built through music—especially how TMBG's fan club structure fosters that, creating a space where like-minded fans can bond over their shared love for the band's unique, neurodivergent-friendly artistry.“I can't ignore music when it's in a room. If I'm in a restaurant and I hear music, I feel oppressed by it.” - John Linnell“I have a latent desire for maximum efficiency of movement, which is motivated by laziness. I spend a fair amount of time thinking of the easiest way to do things.” - John Linnell“Yeah, that's an autistic song right there. That's the kind of song you come up with after reading Wikipedia at three in the morning.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode? We explored the deep autistic coding in They Might Be Giants' music, from themes of masking, rejection sensitivity, and sensory overload to their love of history-infodumps and special interest anthems. Tune in as we break down fan favorites like Dr. Worm and Upside Down Frown, and discuss how TMBG's fan club structure fosters autistic connection and community. Kirk picks apart not one, not two, but twenty one micro-songs by the great They Might Be Giants. What's that blue thing doing here? Who's knocking on the wall? And for that matter, who's that standing out the window? It's time to answer those questions and many more, as Kirk delves into The Might Be Giants' singular collection of mini-songs, "Fingertips." It's a stylistic smorgasbord of sound, with everything from jazz to rock to lounge to... honestly, genre doesn't exist and "Fingertips" proves it. Each tiny song shines for its brief moment of life, and then lives on forever in your imagination. Written by: John Flansburgh and John LinnellAlbum: Apollo 18 (1992)Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:"Particle Man," "Birdhouse In Your Soul," and "Minimum Wage" by They Might Be Giants and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" by Jimmy Kennedy and Nat Simon from Flood, 1990"Extra Savoir Faire" by TMBG from John Henry, 1994The 2002 documentary Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns)“The Simpsons Main Title Theme” by Danny Elfman, 1989“Joy To The World” - lyrics by Isaac Watts as performed by Nat “King” ColeOUTRO SOLOIST: Kirk HamiltonKirk is the host of Strong Songs. How did Sultan Mehmed II overcome the impenetrable walls of Constantinople? What could Constantine XI have done to avoid being the last Roman emperor? And were the youthful Ottoman forces hopped up on religious exuberance, or just sugar?   Links To Further Yer Book-Learnin'   Sultan Mehmed II or Mehmed the Conqueror (1432–1481), was a merciless warrior who slaughtered millions, conquered vast territories, and just loved to doodle.   Constantine I (The Great) (272-337) was the first emperor of Byzantium, and Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos or Dragaš Palaeologus (1404–1453) was the last. Many Greeks saw it as fitting that the Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire, started with one Constantine and ended with another. Constantine XI was less keen on being the Byzantine bookend.   Istanbul got its name in 1930. Not, ahem, in 1935, as said in the episode. You'd think Trent would have noticed this on his visit in 1933. The shame.   In 1953 — the 500-year anniversary of Constantinople's conquest — Canadian heartthrobs The Four Lads sung the novelty hit Istanbul (Not Constantinople). The song became a gold record, and endures as an ear worm for history geeks.

In a short span of time, in the fourth century, Byzantium made the leap from a relatively insignificant harbor city to the de facto capital of the world. Constantine moved there from Rome and gave his empire a new (and Christian) founding. He also laid the foundations for a political milieu that made “Byzantine” a byword meaning complicated, bureaucratic, and corrupt. Constantinople's laws, for better and worse, circumscribed the movements and actions of many of the later Fathers. As you can only imagine my response when I received the email… “Hey, this is John F. from TMBG, and we'd like to share our Book with you in hopes that we can figure out a chat on your podcast.” Well spoiler alert, I was pretty excited to make that happen. Of course I said yes! Like I, many of you may know them from songs such as Istanbul (Not Constantinople), I Palindrome I, Particle Man, Birdhouse in your Soul, or even the theme song to Malcolm in the Middle… but today we're talking to John about their latest project. Their new book & album, which is fittingly entitled, “BOOK,” is a collaboration between the band, past Obsessed Show guest and Designer Paul Sahre, and photographer Brian Karlsson. I was lucky enough to get a preview copy a few days ago, and as I understand, this is only one of two copies of this gorgeous book that exists… so far! Welcome to Episode 14, coming to you live from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We've escaped the Sydney lockdown and moved to the QLD lockdown, sneaking across the state border in removalist trucks.  Mick's been listening to Type O Negative's slow, heavy cover of Seals & Croft's “Summer Breeze”, and The Phatman has been listening to They Might Be Giants' Flood album with great songs like "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", and "Birdhouse in Your Soul".  Today, we talk about an Aussie phenomenon - Pub Rock.  Big pubs like the Oceanic, Sundowner, Dee Why, Mona Vale with capacity of 1000+ were a cheap way to see bands with door prices underwritten by alcohol sales.  From the mid-70's through to the late 80's, they provided an environment where Aussie bands could develop before trying to make it in the UK, Europe, or the US.   The Angels are a perfect example of an 80's Aussie Guitar Band.  Their shows were a non-stop blast of high energy.  With twin guitarists, Rick and John Brewster, standing totally still in sunglasses, movement on stage was centred around Doc Neeson – ball of energy.  Most Angels songs featured a solid riff over a pounding rhythm line underpinning Neeson's rapid-fire/machine gun/perfect diction vocal delivery.  Sometimes Doc adopted a (hyper-Energiser Bunny!) “robotic” style of movement – take a look at the clip of “Take a Long Line” at Latrobe Uni in 1979, or live at Narara in 1983.  They were fun!!!!!   We saw The Angels many times and each show was a highlight.  Their first gig in Sydney, playing a radio station promo show under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  Supporting Bowie when singer Doc Neeson climbed the huge PA stack.   At Sundowners, a pub in south-western Sydney where Mick took off his shirt after 3 songs to find it still soaking wet at the end of the show!  The audience got into the act, too.  “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again", became a fan favourite with an expletive-laden live crowd response of “No way, get fucked, fuck off”.  This chant has been described by The Guardian's Darryl Mason as "one of the most famous in Australian rock history". Contact us If you enjoy this podcast, share it with a friend who loves music. A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: • Daniel Maloof's having a shit one. He is being blackmailed because he was videoed masturbating to a cam girl. He's still being accused of murder by Penn all over the TV. He is kidnapped, strung up, stoned and dickpunched by the Carrs. Then he is rescued by Alonzo and Dodie, who are going to kill him - but Daniel turns the tables! And the other side is also really shitty.  • Sea Sprite Bombing Suspect of the Week is Matty's pick: mole-having gum vending machine-filling Perry, who blows himself up when the police come for him.  • But Veronica doesn't buy that he's a culprit, and with another bomb going off at the end of the episode, the mystery continues. Unsurprisingly. • More surprising is that Veronica actually has some fun! She gets to try on Nicole's punching gloves, drop some E, dance dance dance - then puke puke puke the next morning.  • Keith's also having fun - he and Clyde bond over golf!  • And Penn and his group of Murderheads are, unfortunately, still in our lives, dredging up Lilly Kane's murder, advancing some wild theories about the Sea Sprite bomber - but one does give Veronica the link between the bombing and El Despiadado. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 episode 3: Keep Calm and Party On, and probe such mysteries as how Alonzo and Dodie are delivering the heads to El Despiadado back in Mexico; if They Might Be Giants were around too late for Logan's cut-off date for culture; whether Logan's jacket is available in Jenny-size; and whether the show is trying to coin an in-universe version of BDE. Content note:Veronica Mars contains heavy themes, and this episode includes storylines concerning murder, violence, bombing, torture, racism, and drug use.  For more about this episode, and to read the transcript, visit the podcast's official site http://VMIpod.com/4-03. Austin Powers. Malcolm in the Middle. Looney Tunes. Blues Clues. Istanbul (not Constantinople). What do all of these things have in common? No, it's not that they all include slapstick gags, it's that they have all had songs from the quintessential art rock group, They Might Be Giants. Whatever strangely themed music they made, the level of production mastery they brought to it was undeniable. “Boss of Me”, the theme for Malcolm in the Middle was so good that they even parodied it's style in the 2000s sitcom episode of WandaVision. In 1990, however, they were still on their rise to the giants that we know them as today. They had gained the respect of college radio and MTV, and their most recent album “Lincoln” had a #11 on the US Modern Rock chart with “Ana Ng”. With “Flood”, They Might Be Giants had their first big budget major label release, having signed to Elektra Records, and they did not waste a second of it. With the odd beauty of “Birdhouse in Your Soul” and the outright catchiness of their The Four Lads cover “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” (which was used in a Looney Tunes cartoon), they won over a mainstream audience, earning them a platinum album. Today we are starting a MONTH (or so) of the members of Inspector 34 as guests! We're getting them each on individually to talk about an album that they love and we're starting with their keyboardist, Silas Price! He tells us about his other projects Fomosurfer and Pleasure Center and we talk about how They Might Be Giants influenced his own music. He explains the division of the Roman Empire under Emperor Diocletian and establishment of the city of Constantinople by Emperor Constantine. The professor emphasizes the geographic and economic importance of the location of the Byzantine capital. The concept of "Nova Roma" and the difference between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires are emphasized. Hotle details the reign of Emperor Justinian including his territorial ambitions, building projects, and the establishment of the Justinian Code. He tells of General Belisarius's military conquests and his role in defeating the Nika Rebellion. The Empress Theodora, her history and her importance to Justinian are the focus of the second half of the discussion. Dr. Hotle explains the impact a divided empire had on Christianity, and how we are in debt to the Byzantines for preserving Greco-Roman culture. He completes the conversation with an description of the Hagia Sophia, the rise of Islam in the region, and the eventual fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in 1453. Flood fans, you're in for a treat, a fresh-baked, yummy one! Dave and Jordan, the hosts, take you, the listeners, through the countless-yet-countable (21) demos and Dial-A-Song recordings that made up almost all of the songs on Flood! We think it's worth the money and hurt as we gasp in shock at the alternate lyrics of the Birdhouse In Your Soul demo! We can't say why we enjoy the phone version of Istanbul (Not Constantinople), maybe we just liked it better that way! Your Racist Friend doubles the racism with TWO vastly different demo versions, and Twisting gets all twisted up into a totally different song which leaves Dave and Jordan hanging! Jordan gushes over the adorable demo for We Want A Rock, while Dave collapses upon his fainting couch at the coarse language in the Hearing Aid demo! Here they come to take on the sassy Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love demo, park their cars for a while at the haunting Road Movie To Berlin demo, and are stunned silent by the lack of unique qualities of the James K. Polk demo! All this and so much more! Are you not fulfilled?!? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dontletsstart/support

This is a recording! We may not be able to drive out the way we drove in, so we have to leave our exploration of Flood through these b-sides and remixes left scattered in the middle of the road! Not that there's anything middle of the road (whew) about James K. Polk, the original Flood-reject version that showed up on the Istanbul (Not Constantinople) EP and was just a small glimmer in They Might Be Giants' eye of the fan-favorite song it would later become! Jordan's oratory fills Dave with fear as he goes into THE in-depth discussion on the origins and intentions of the beloved song! Then Jordan and Dave's Johnny cups are filled with gloom as they discuss the sad beauty of Stormy Pinkness. Track 4 of the Istanbul EP was a little fella called Ant, who ransacks this podcast, leaving a mess that our hosts can barely rummage through. Finally, we dissect and display the various creators of the remixes of Istanbul (Not Constantinople) and Your Racist Friend, paying special attention to the Brownsville Mix and the overwhelming collage of pop music samples contained therein. Also featuring, at the very start of the episode, a devastating revelation about a song from Flood that will rock you to your very core! Our handmade boat ride through Flood continues! In this episode, we continue to celebrate and interrogate They Might Be Giants' big-time third album! We confidentially ponder and rattle on about Lucky Ball & Chain, then you can't go back to before TMBG released this next song! We devote much of the episode to an unbelievably in-depth discussion about Istanbul (Not Constantinople), tracking the history of the song (and even the city!) and John and John's interest in it, the dense production of the track, and the popularity of the strange single that forever changed TMBG's career. Now it's over, but not before we dig up Dead and try to answer the question we all have: is it good to be alive, dead, or dead-alive? The answer may terrify you! We walk through the early years and the rising threat to Byzantium and Western Christendom, before the triumphant capture of Constantinople by Mehmed II.

Vindicated Trump is presently asking how their investigation into his campaign got started in the first place, suggesting FBI Comey was "leading the effort on spying." What is it about this quirky musical group that has kept fans interested for over 30 years? Next week, we'll put on our robes and wizard hats to talk about fans of tabletop RPGs! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** > They Might Be Giants (often abbreviated as TMBG) is an American alternative rock band formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. During TMBG's early years, Flansburgh and Linnell frequently performed as a duo, often accompanied by a drum machine. In the early 1990s, TMBG expanded to include a backing band. > > — [Wikipedia - They Might Be Giants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Might_Be_Giants) TMBG is known for having an unconventional, experimental kind of music, has released 19 studio albums (including _Flood_ which has been certified platinum), has created theme music for several television shows, and has produced children's music. Think you haven't heard of them? Try one of the following: - Boss of Me (theme song of _Malcolm in the Middle_) - Dog On Fire (opening theme of _The Daily Show with Jon Stewart_) - The theme song for _Oblongs_, and _The Wrong Coast_ - Birdhouse in your Soul, Istanbul (Not Constantinople), and Particle Man **Most Active:** Given that They Might Be Giants has been a band since the 1980s, it's not surprising that the [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F07n3s) data shows a pretty low amount of interest over time. To be fair, unlike many of the fandoms we've covered, interest in TMBG was already quite low in 2004. There was a huge spike in interest in July 2004 which corresponds to the the release of their album _The Spine_, and some smaller bursts of interest probably related to different album releases. Interest now is about 1/10th of the interest from 2004. **Size of Fandom:** They Might Be Giants has sold over 4 million records. Given that information and their 19 studio albums, a rough estimate of fans would give us between ~200 000 and 4 million. A different (much lower estimate) that gives an idea of the dedication of fans might be the _They Might Be Giants Instant Fan Club_: > The Instant Fan Club returned for 2015 with an announcement in November 2014. There were initially 2,500 subscriptions available, which were meant to be available until January 5, 2015. All 2,500 spots were filled by December ... In addition to the regular level of membership ($98) and the Super-President tier ($250) introduced in 2012's fan club, the 2015 IFC offers a third option "for folks on a budget", Dial-A-Song Direct ($30). > > — [this might be a wiki - They Might Be Giants Instant Fan Club](http://tmbw.net/wiki/They_Might_Be_Giants_Instant_Fan_Club) TMBG has [over 330 000 likes on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/theymightbegiants/), over [65 000 followers on Twitter](https://twitter.com/tmbg?lang=en), and over [2200 subscribers on r/tmbg](https://www.reddit.com/r/tmbg/). **Around the world:** From the [Google Trends data again](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F07n3s), most fans of They Might Be Giants hail from English speaking countries: By and large, fans are from the United States, but there is also some interest in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand. **Did you know that...** - TMBG is [the unofficial band of the TV Tropes Wiki](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Music/TheyMightBeGiants)? - Melissa Joan Hart (_Clarissa Explains It All_, _Sabrina: The Teenage Witch_) got a job because of TMBG: > "I actually got the job for Clarissa Explains It All because of They Might Be Giants.
