Her work is for anyone who's ever been told to sound different, speak softer, or conform to fit in. Samara's insights are grounded in her own journey, from Shakespeare festivals to coaching Hollywood actors to helping leaders and changemakers show up authentically. Her audiobook is as compelling as the conversation you're about to hear—a true reflection of her mission to help us all own our voices unapologetically. 2024 has been the year of the iconic lovers Romeo and Juliet, and director Sam Gold has brought a bold new production of the timeless tragedy to Broadway. With a fresh, contemporary approach, Gold transforms Shakespeare's classic love story into an immersive experience that features a dynamic young cast led by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and an innovative score by Grammy-winning musician Jack Antonoff, blending live music seamlessly into the action. Gold discusses how he re-envisioned the play for today's world, capturing the urgency and intensity of youth while staying true to the emotional heart of the original. He reflects on the challenges and joys of reinterpreting a well-known story and shares the creative process behind staging a Romeo and Juliet that feels relevant to a whole new generation of theatergoers, many of whom may be seeing their first Broadway. Sam Gold is a Tony Award-winning director with an extensive Broadway and theater resume. His Broadway credits include An Enemy of the People (this season) with Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, Macbeth with Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga, King Lear with Glenda Jackson, A Doll's House, Part 2 (Tony Award Nomination), The Glass Menagerie, Fun Home (Tony Award), The Real Thing, The Realistic Joneses, and Seminar. Recent credits include Hamlet at The Public Theater, Othello at New York Theatre Workshop, The Flick (Lucille Lortel Award nomination) at Playwrights Horizons, Barrow Street Theatre, and the National Theatre, The Glass Menagerie (Toneelgroep, Amsterdam), John (Signature Theatre; Obie Award, Lortel and Drama Desk Award nominations), The Village Bike (MCC Theatre), and Uncle Vanya (Soho Repertory Theatre; Drama Desk nomination), among many others. Tread Perilously's Summer Patreon request month leads to very British superpowers with Misfits Season 2, Episode 2. Simon's day of annoying the others is interrupted when his half-brother, Jamie, arrives to introduce himself for the first time. The two start to bond down the pub, but when Jamie's car is stolen, he reveals their father was bound and gagged in the boot. Meanwhile, the others get closer to discovering the masked man who has been following them. It all leads to a rave where Simon and Jamie decide which of them gets to pull the bartender they met earlier who happens to have ice powers. Will it lead to tragedy? Erik and Justin immediately fuss over the presence of Robert Sheehan -- who may have been playing Klaus from The Umbrella Academy for a very long time. Justin figures out where the series is meant to take place. Erik finds all the Britishisms he can recall. He also confuses the X-Man called Skin with another Mutant. The definition of "chav" comes up. The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics lead to some advance planning. Erik can't help but call Iwan Rheon "Ramsey Bolton." A special guest star distracts Justin. He is also surprised to see Dexter Fletcher, and Ruth Negga makes an unexpected appearance.

Pakula's smart, understated legal thriller Presumed Innocent featuring Harrison Ford in one of his finest performances. Taut, richly detailed, and featuring a considerable bench of "that guy" character actors (including John Spencer, Joe Grifasi, and Brian Dennehy), the film rises above the usual theatrics of the Grisham-era Hollywood legal drama with a crackerjack, densely-packed script that rewards upon repeat viewings while never sacrificing its immediacy. We discuss Harrison Ford in the early 90s, his contemporaneous swings into dramatic territory, and the considered decisions to separate the film's protagonist Rusty Sabich from audience's familiarity with the Harrison Ford action-hero brand. Then, we look at the film's complex narrative features (adapted from a book by lawyer-turned-novelist Scott Turrow) and how the film weaves in its rich details with respect for its audience's ability to connect the dots. Finally, we discuss the Extended Presumiverse - sequel novels and television adaptations of the further works within the Scott Turrow canon, including the most recent AppleTV+ series by David E. Kelley starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard.Follow Katie Stebbins on Twitter.Check out Katie's Etsy for cool prints and film zines.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Josh gives the nod to Netflix thanks to their conversation starting films like Hit Man, Axel F, Atlas, and Under Paris and their hit series like Bridgerton (plus news that they will be creating their own amusement experience).  Bill passed over Netflix to give props to MAX after they debuted their trailer for The Penguin, converted some of their event series into HBO originals, announced Damon Lindeloff will be writing their Green Lantern series, and earned major ratings with the NBA Finals and House of the Dragon S2. Meanwhile, Alex spoke up for Tubi a month after they beat Disney Plus in total viewers for second behind Netflix, and scored a ton of good press in the process. New Series Spotlight – This month, they reviewed Presumed Innocent, Apple TV Plus's adaptation of the 1990 Harrison Ford feature film and the 1987 best selling novel by lawyer turned novelist Scott Turow. The series was created by David E Kelley and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, as a local prosecutor accused of murdering his fellow ADA, played in flashbacks by Renate Reinsve, who he happened to be having an affair with at the time of her death.   There's no way to scrub quickly through the previous 495-ish episodes to find out, but it's possible we've never had two movies featured in the main episode that are so tonally at odds. First, Megan talks about MEAN GIRLS (2:01), the new enjoyable musical comedy about teen cliques based on the Broadway musical, which is adapted from the 2004 film. Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. and written by Tina Fey, it stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, and Auliʻi Cravalho. Then, Dave and Megan discuss Felipe Gálvez Haberle's Western THE SETTLERS (10:29), a movie so gruesome in its depictions of genocidal violence in 1901 Chile that Dave can't stop nervous-laughing throughout (even though it's an exceptionally well-made movie). Finally, we all review GOOD GRIEF (29:12), which, as Evan points out, is not a Charlie Brown biopic, but Dan Levy's new comedy-drama, co-starring Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel. We had mixed reactions. Over on Patreon, we talk about STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, so check that out!

Sometimes, the beauty of Shakespeare's poetry takes your breath away. In the case of today's guest, Shakespeare gave him his breath back. You may recognize actor Michael Patrick Thornton from his roles on TV series like Private Practice and The Good Doctor. Twenty years ago, Thornton had just started out in his acting career when he suffered two spinal strokes that nearly ended his life. He survived, but the strokes took away his ability to breathe and speak. A speech therapist helped Thornton find his way back to breath control… by reciting Shakespeare. He talks with Barbara Bogaev about learning to breathe again with the Bard. Michael Patrick Thornton is the co-founder and former artistic director of The Gift Theatre in Chicago. He's played Iago at the Gift, and Richard III in a co-production with Steppenwolf Theatre. Recently, he appeared on Broadway in Sam Gold's 2022 production of Macbeth starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga and in the Tony-nominated Broadway production of A Doll's House. There's so much going on in this movie, none of which is explicitly gay per se, but all of which is very immersive and will make you think about the ways in which white supremacy and the racist and colonial American project harms us all! While not exactly upbeat, it's also not tragedy porn, but a nuanced portrayal of longing and human behavior under oppressive racialized structures, and it is very good. Plus it has Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga. Take a ride through the actor's life and listen to our latest episode. Lily Rabe, who can currently be seen in David E. Kelley's Love + Death on HBO Max, and on Shrinking on Apple TV +, is the daughter of prolific playwright David Rabe and celebrated actress, Jill Clayburgh, and we begin our conversation with her childhood spent near the stage. Watching the world's greatest talent in rehearsals for her father's masterpiece, Hurlyburly, Lily was bitten by the performance bug early on. We discuss her time as a dancer and how that turned to acting, life at Northwestern and her very fancy degree, and how life almost imitated art when she played a restaurant-employed actor for the film No Reservations. She describes why her heart belongs to theater and the “religious experience” that is performing Shakespeare In The Park. We discuss being a part of the Ryan Murphy American Horror Story family, and in a quick fire round, Lily talks playing Liz Cheney, the sheer joy she felt during The Undoing, why George Clooney is the happiest person, and why her role in his The Tender Bar opposite Ben Affleck was a favorite, and why George and Ben are, too. We discuss crafting the complicated relationship her character Meg has with Harrison Ford's Paul in Shrinking, and we talk in detail about why embodying Betty Gore for Love + Death sometimes meant taking her home with her, for better or worse. Having worked with her husband Hamish over many years, Lily tells us why co-directing the soon-to-be-released film Downtown Owl whet their appetites for much more. And on the subject of  "more”, Lily tells us why she's feeling so fulfilled…. so will simply take some more of that, please. We touch on Presumed Innocent, ahead for her on AppleTV+ and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga. We talk about how paying attention to saying no helped build her brilliant career, and why she looks to feel compelled to play a part. And lastly, Lily shares her great taste with a long list of her most favorite obsessions. We hope you love our conversation with everyone's favorite, Lily Rabe, just as much as we do. This weekend, Lilah talks to actor Michael Patrick Thornton, who appears in the buzzy new Broadway production of Macbeth. When Michael was 24, he had a series of spinal cord strokes. Reciting Shakespeare's sonnets taught him how to breathe and speak again, and continue his career. Michael is at present the only actor on Broadway who uses a wheelchair. We ask him about the power of language and his role in the play (which also stars Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga). Then, we learn about Britain's top forensic artist from journalist Will Coldwell, and the techniques she uses to catch criminals — which include a jar of strawberry jam.--------------Want to say hi?
