In the 80s and 90s, the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program sent police officers into schools to teach kids to stay off drugs. D.A.R.E.'s cringey curriculum was taught in schools all over the U.S., spawning lame PSAs, a whole bunch of weird merchandise, and maybe some light childhood trauma. There was just one problem… D.A.R.E. didn't actually work. It did, however, cost taxpayers millions of dollars and miseducated a whole generation of kids.Jon Gabrus (High and Mighty, The Action Boyz) and Fumi Abe (The Tonight Show) join Misha to just say no… to D.A.R.E.Follow The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts. Like most American Millennials, I was subjected to Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE. It was the typical kind of “Drugs Are Bad, mmmkay?” sort of thing. Police officers would come to school and show 2nd graders pictures of smoker lungs and suggest that everyone and their mom would be peer pressuring you to smoke weed and/or crack, which was not as big of an issue as some of us might have hoped. During one such class, we were being taught about the danger of gang violence and we were told to draw what we thought a gang member would look like. Yes, it does sound like a potentially extremely racist arts and crafts session, but yours truly decided to get creative. I drew a woman wearing a crop top and JNCO jeans. The DARE officer looked at my drawing and told me that women weren't ever members of gangs, but were usually girlfriends, which made my tiny feminist hackles raise. What do you MEAN there weren't any lady gang members? Whatever men could do, women could do, right? EQUALITY, RIGHT? If she had been prepared for nuance beyond her vaguely racist lesson, she might have talked about the culture of toxic masculinity that pervades most gangs as we think about them today and often, women have to carve out their own niche when it comes to organized crime. Officer Silva, this one's for you.Get 15% off OneSkin with the code HAPPYCAMPER at  https://www.oneskin.co/ #oneskinpodSources:Heritage of Endurance: Family Patterns and Delinquency Formation in Urban Japan By Hiroshi Wagatsuma, George A. Instagram | TikTok DEFINITIONS D.A.R.E.: Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a program in which police officers make visits to elementary school classrooms, warning children that drugs are harmful and should be refused. It was created as a part of Reagan's so-called war on drugs initiative. Its effectiveness is highly contested and some studies show it can be counterproductive. TAKEAWAYS If you are Asian, then you look Asian. Just like if you are American, then you look American. It is not our job to educate white people about their racist behavior. It is our job to hold our own community accountable by having non-judgmental conversations about racism that is embedded in our culture. If you're an artist, then you create art, people see themselves reflected in it, and it makes them feel connected to other humans. That's pretty magical if you think about it. Keeping in mind that the industry is a box can be helpful to remember when your art doesn't fit in. How can we celebrate our cultures in more inclusive ways that don't implicitly put others down? On April 21, 1990, all four major American television networks: ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS, most independent stations, as well as cable networks Nickelodeon and the USA Network ran the anti-crack PSA, Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue.  Sponsored by McDonald's, the special featured nearly every famous cartoon at the time: Winnie the Pooh, Muppet Babies, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Smurfs, Garfield, Bugs Bunny, the Duck Tales Gang, ALF, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more!  Steve and Megan revisit their memories of D.A.R.E., the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program that ran from 1983 through 2009. We talk about the crack "epidemic," which many believe was a moral panic, and then we review the ironically trippy cartoon special.  Our non-sponsored snack for this episode are Nik L Nips, the wax bottle candy developed during the Prohibition Era that made a comeback in the 1980s! In this episode, we spend the first half discussing Post Malone and his new album, Twelve Carat Toothache. We also take a peek into some of Posty's personal life & how smoking 45 sticks a day caused the D.A.R.E program to shut down. Remember the "Drug Abuse Resistance Education" program? They had crazy questionnaires in the back of the book for parents with insane questions. For example, if your child answered: “yes” to “did something exciting happen” or if they “tried hard to win a game” in the questionnaire, then parents should be wary of possible drug use. Many critics lambasted the book as borderline fraudulent, while harsher critics reserved that term for DARE itself. We then FINALLY jump into the Depp vs. Heard trial. I'll be honest, it was too much to cover. But in this segment, I review the infamous poop-in-bed clip as well as Amber not knowing the difference between "pledge" & "donate". We then cover a LEAKED transcript from Johnny Depp & Amber Heard from outside of the courtroom just MINUTES after they step outside. Finally, we end the episode with an EXCLUSIVE interview with Johnny Depp on his feelings towards Disney, Amber, the trial, and all of the support he gained from the trial alone. 0:00 - Intro / Happy Pride Month!! 0:45 - Post Malone is Back 1:20 - Carat vs. Carrot - Who Knew? 2:30 - Twelve Carat Toothache Review 6:14 - Post Malone Smokes 40+ Sticks a Day - Full Send Podcast 8:20 - The D.A.R.E Program - Drug Abuse Resistance Education 12:45 - Post Malone Welcomes Baby Girl 13:51 - How Justin Bieber Makes His Music 16:00 - It Takes Lil Wayne 7 Weeks to Write 2 Lines of Music 17:25 - How Post Malone Writes 30% of His Music 22:00 - Bothering Megs While She's in The Bathroom 24:37 - FlightZoneSmoke.com - Promo Code: WAWD 15% OFF 26:25 - Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard 27:00 - Amber Heard Poops The Bed 29:00 - Amber Heard Doesn't Understand "Pledge" vs. "Donation" 32:07 - LEAKED Transcript After Depp vs. Heard Trial 34:20 - EXCLUSIVE - Johnny Depp Interview After Trial - WAWD EXCLUSIVE -- SUPPORT THE SHOW: DudeRobe - 20% Your Order!!! https://duderobe.com PROMO CODE: WAWD BarkBox - Get 2 FREE MONTHS https://barkbox.com/wawd BlueChew - Get $20 OFF - FIRST ORDER FREE https://wawdpod.com/blue FlightZone - 15% OFF https://flightzonesmoke.com/ Promo Code: WAWD -- Listen Here: ✅ Spotify: https://bit.ly/wawd-spotify ✅ Apple Podcast: https://bit.ly/wawd-apple ✅ Google Podcast: https://bit.ly/wawd-google ✅ Breaker: https://bit.ly/wawd-breaker ✅ Overcast: https://bit.ly/wawd-overcast -- Watch Here: ✅ Youtube: https://bit.ly/wawd-youtubes ✅ Facebook: https://bit.ly/wawd-facebook ✅ TikTok: https://bit.ly/wawd-tiktok -- Follow Us: ✅ Instagram: https://bit.ly/wawd-instagram ✅ TikTok: https://bit.ly/wawd-tiktok ✅ Facebook: https://bit.ly/wawd-facebook -- Support the Pod: ✅ Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/whatarewedoing ✅ Shop: https://shopwawd.com/ ✅ Be Our Guest: https://whatarewedoingpod.com/be-a-guest ✅ Links: https://whatarewedoingpod.com/links --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/what-are-we-doing-pod/message

Tonight's special guest is Robert Kahn from Fernley, Nevada, who will introduce us to his children's safety book series. Currently there are eight (8) books, developed these books from his Children's Safety Program which he taught as a D.A.R.E. Officer with a County Sheriff's Department. "Over my sixteen (16) year career" he says, "this program saved 44+ children from abduction." He goes on, "I was a 6th Grade Teacher and a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. I became concerned with the problems plaguing young people. I was offered the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) position in the county I taught in. I was driven to prevent children from making the wrong choices, so I changed careers from teaching to law enforcement." It was a wise decision. "Considering the data on child endangerment, it is abundantly clear that more proactive education is needed. My books are written in a friendly way and explain how children can be safe when they aren't with a trusted adult. The themes include: Stranger Danger, Bullying, Good Touch/Bad Touch, Don't Hide Abuse, Suicide Prevention, Children Coping with Divorce, Bicycle Safety and Halloween Safety." Robert concludes, "Children would know what to do in dangerous situations before they are victimized. To be forewarned is to be forearmed!"

Ex-Bucks County D.A.R.E. Police Officer Accused of Sexually Assaulting Boys. A former police officer who worked to keep children from abusing drugs and resisting violence is accused of sexually abusing several teens and faces more than 100 counts of assault and abuse in a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, court. James Carey, a retired Warminster Township police officer who worked with children as part of the D.A.R.E. program, is accused of sexually abusing at least four teenage boys dating back two decades, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said. Carey, who turns 53 next week, was arraigned on at least 122 counts late Wednesday morning. The accusations against Carey include several counts each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault of a child and corruption of minors, according to court records. Carey's bail was set at 10% or $100,000, according to court records. He was sent to county jail following his court hearing. Carey said nothing as he entered the court Wednesday morning or left it in handcuffs. His attorney Michael Applebaum proclaimed Carey is innocent. "We look forward to proving his innocence in court," Applebaum said. The arrest came after a grand jury investigation, the DA’s office said. District Attorney Matt Weintraub will reveal details about the investigation at a 2 p.m. Wednesday news conference. Drug Abuse Resistance Education, a.k.a. D.A.R.E. "envisions a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance use, and other dangerous behaviors," according to the national program's website. D.A.R.E. programs aimed at preventing drug usage and youth violence are set up in for students of all ages in schools. Carey served as a D.A.R.E. officer for Log College Middle School in the Centennial School District, according to court documents. He interreacted with some of his alleged victims at the school and other locations in the township. Carey, who is not married and has no children, retired from the Warminster force in 2009, it was revealed in court. Carey, who is now a resident of Cape May County, New Jersey, has worked as a security guard since his retirement, but is currently unemployed. This story is developing and will be updated. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/oss2389/support

Today in the Word Devotional

My son, who is in the fifth grade, just graduated from his school’s D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). This is a police-led program designed to prevent kids from using or abusing drugs and alcohol by describing the physical, social, and mental consequences. In today’s reading, Paul vividly describes the consequences of having false teachers in the church. Their “quarreling about words” was not just distracting but also destructive. It “ruins those who listen” (v. 14), makes those who engage in it “more and more ungodly” (v. 16), and causes the church to be unhealthy (v. 17). Paul names two ringleaders who were causing much of the damage, Hymenaeus and Philetus (v. 17). They had been teaching that the final resurrection had already happened (v. 18). By doing this, they were denying the future physical resurrection of believers and undermining the faith. In contrast, Paul paints a picture of what a faithful minister of the gospel looks like. Instead of looking for the approval of people, the faithful minister will seek the approval of God (v. 15). Instead of quarreling about words, he “correctly handles the word of truth” (v. 15). Because of this, he can appear before God unashamed (v. 15). Despite the damage done by false teachers, God promises to protect and preserve His church (v. 19). In the ancient world a seal was used to indicate ownership. Paul reminds Timothy that God has sealed us with the inscription, “the Lord knows those who are his” (v. 19). God is not confused by false teachers, and He knows His true children intimately. These are the ones who confess the name of the Lord and turn away from ungodliness (v. 19). >> It is easy to look at the state of the church today and worry about its survival. Remember that despite persecution, false teaching, and internal conflict, the church has endured for almost 2,000 years! God promises that a “solid foundation stands firm” (v. 19).

But I wasn’t my best self and I was just following in the footsteps of my family.” One night, after her son entered the 4th grade D.A.R.E. Running a marathon had been a lifelong dream. So when a friend asked her to join a Super Sprint Triathlon — her career as a 50+ triathlete was born. “It took me one year of training to run 2.2 miles,” she laughs. Frank says getting unstuck is as simple as these three steps. 1:  Let go of something old. 2. Try an intellectual challenge. 3. Try something totally new. “Just do it!”

In this debut episode, Amil recollects the time her and her older brother Gavin started attending the D.A.R.E program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) in elementary school. Her and brother become frightened (and a bit paranoid) from the information taught that day and from there was lead to believe that their atrocious step-aunt could potentially be a drug user. Remember how we were all playing Narc in the arcades, and just saying no to everything, and also D.A.R.E. was a thing? But how much did we actually understand about drug abuse? If Action Jackson is any indication, absolutely nothing. In this film, real-life crack addict Vanity plays a woman with the most comically unimportant heroin addiction ever put to film. After a night without a fix, she's...a little grumpy. Helping her on the road to recovery is obvious steroid abuser Carl Weathers, who appears to have extra muscles growing out of his normal muscles. The bad guy, meanwhile, is played by Coach, who, as far as we know, is not a drug addict, even though, as a former sitcom star, he has the best excuse. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
