An insured filed a claim for a lost diamond earring. The stud and its match were scheduled as 1.00 Carat each, “I” color and SI clarity, for $8,000. Her insurer asked Gemcor create a match. When we received the mate, we ran our standard test and found something unexpected: the diamond wasn't natural. It was lab-grown. In the years since its purchase, the replacement cost for lab-grown diamonds has plummeted. But the insured believed they were both natural, and wants a natural replacement. Notable Timestamps [ 00:58 ] - A client filed a claim for a lost diamond earring, but the mate, initially thought to be natural and scheduled for $8,000, was unexpectedly discovered to be lab-grown, with its replacement cost having plummeted. [ 01:28 ] - Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, grown from a seed crystal in a lab, and only very high-quality equipment can differentiate them. [ 02:08 ] - The main difference for lab-grown diamonds is value, as they are not rare. Natural diamonds take millions of years, while lab-grown are created in 30 days, making them significantly less expensive. [ 06:12 ] - An insured's original appraisal correctly stated "lab grown," but underwriting dropped this crucial detail from the policy, as the industry lacked awareness of its importance years ago. [ 10:10 ] - If an insurance company pays for a pair and later discovers the remaining earring is lab-grown, salvage recovery is minimal, as there's no market to resell them when new ones can be easily manufactured. [ 11:27 ] - A lab-grown diamond pair purchased for $8,000 in 2001 (or $2,000 two years ago) can now be replaced by the original jeweler for $1,000 or less due to plummeting market prices. [ 14:04 ] - The purpose of insurance is to make the insured whole by replacing the item with like kind and quality, not necessarily the original dollar amount, which is impactful when lab-grown prices change quickly. [ 16:45 ] - Ali & Dana provide a recap of the points above. Hollywood's infamously tumultuous love story between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton took the idea of an 'apology gift' to another level. Specifically, by Burton buying Taylor a 68 carat diamond.
Chapter 2: The Four C's (Part 2) Episode Overview Andy finishes the Four C's conversation with Clarity and Carat Weight, delivers his legendary Diamond-to-Steak conversion chart, and cuts through the industry's microscopic bullshit to give you what actually matters when you're standing in that jewelry store. Key Takeaways The Clarity Reality Check: She doesn't need a flawless diamond unless she specifically asked for one - she just wants it to look that way Clarity grades are determined by gemologists with microscopes, not naked eyes in natural lighting The difference between technically flawless and "looks flawless" can save you thousands 99% of diamond inclusions are invisible without specialized equipment Focus on VS2-SI1 for best value - they look identical to higher grades but cost significantly less Carat Weight - Size vs. Reality: One carat = 0.2 grams = about one Skittle (finally, a measurement that makes sense) Carat measures weight, not size - two diamonds can weigh the same but look completely different Diamond cutters face a constant battle: preserve weight (money) vs. create ideal proportions (beauty) The real artists sacrifice weight for performance every time The Money-Saving Secret: Diamonds jump in price at half and whole carat marks A 0.9 carat might cost 20% less than a 1.0 carat of identical quality Nobody can spot the difference with the naked eye Buy just under those magic thresholds: 0.9 instead of 1.0, 1.4 instead of 1.5 The Quick Decision Guide: Cut Grade: Excellent/Ideal worth every penny, Very Good is the sweet spot, Good or lower proceed with caution Color: G-H is the sweet spot, I-J smart value, D-F if you have the budget and appreciate the difference Clarity: VS2-SI1 best value, SI2 can work if inspected, Flawless-VVS for bragging rights The Diamond-to-Steak Conversion Chart: Cut = Chef's Skill: Best beef poorly cooked is a travesty, average beef perfectly cooked is a religious experience Color & Clarity = Grade of Beef: Prime costs more than choice, you're paying for rarity within rarity Carat Weight = Portion Size: An 8-ounce filet costs more than a 6-ounce of the same quality Memorable Quote "A good diamond will be good forever. A bad diamond will be bad forever." - Andy's reminder that this decision has permanent consequences. What's Next The "investment value" of diamonds - and dear Lord, they've got it so wrong. This week I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with one of my favorite people and entrepreneurs, Marissa Donahoo from FOUR CARAT VODKA. We discuss what inspired her to create her own vodka brand, how she and her husband manage their own businesses as well as working on creating their newest baby, FOUR CARAT, and how she manages life as an entrepreneur and a mom.To purchase Four Carat online, visit:https://4caratvodka.com/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaYGueqNoKsFVN56AvfIW6r3vXSck5ZiQwxrVuyEw2D5s6ZAG8oVgDDYOWQ_aem_3cpn5zHy-xaiHvfuSknkQw
Buying advertising is a lot like buying diamonds.Allow me to explain.Anyone who talks to a jeweler will be told that diamonds are graded according to the 4 C's: Color, Clarity, Carat weight, and Cut.Customers ask the jeweler, “Which of the 4 Cs is most important?”This seems like a perfectly reasonable question, but the truth is that the 4 C's cannot be compared to one another. There is no rubric, no metric, no algorithm that can equate them. The 4 C's are distinctly separate from one another. They are not interchangeable.Advertising is like that. Each of the characteristics of highly effective advertising are distinctly separate from one another. They are not interchangeable.Natural diamonds can be an infinite number of shades of yellow, grey, brown, green, blue, red, or a mixture thereof. Diamonds can also be colorless. The only thing more valuable than a colorless diamond is an extremely colorful one.Color is a measurement of rarity, not beauty.Clarity is another measurement of rarity, not beauty.“Flawless” clarity refers to a diamond which is free of inclusions under 10x magnification. But under 40x magnification every flawless diamond is swimming with inclusions that cannot be seen under 10x. So get this idea of “flawless” out of your head, okay? It is a myth.Seven clarity grades below flawless is another clarity known as SI2, which looks flawless to the naked eye. Not even a jeweler can tell the difference without 10x magnification. But there is a huge difference in price between flawless and SI2 because Clarity is a measurement of rarity, not beauty, remember?Carat weight is how the size of a diamond is measured. We'll come back to this in a minute.Cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond, but to the ability of the diamond to gather light, bounce it between the facets, and then shine it upward toward the eyes. When diamonds are cut perfectly, they do not leak light out of the bottom of the diamond. A perfectly cut diamond returns 100% of internalized light upward and outward in a wild spectacle of sparkles. You want sparkles, but you also want carat weight. When you cut a diamond crystal perfectly, you lose more than half of that diamond's Carat weight. But if you cheat the cut a little, the diamond won't sparkle as much but it will weigh more and sell for more money. If you cut the diamond with a thick girdle and a deep pavilion, the diamond will be dull because its internal mirrors will be misaligned, but it will be much heavier than if it were cut properly.A Carat is a unit of weight. There are 141.748 Carats in an ounce. This means that a small pouch of 1-Carat diamonds worth just $4,000 each will cost you $567,000 an ounce.Pure gold is less than $3,000 an ounce. Are you beginning to understand why diamond cutters are loath to grind away precious carat weight in the quest for maximum sparkle?Your logical mind tells you that it should be possible to create a diamond algorithm that says, “one colorgrade = 0.05 carats = 0.78 of a clarity grade = 2.13% excess weight above the projected carat weight for a perfectly cut diamond of this diameter.”Your logical mind tells you this because you continue to believe that dissimilar properties such as color, clarity, carat weight, and cut can be quantified, codified, and reconciled. In truth, they cannot.Buying advertising is even more complicated than buying diamonds. The rubric used to calculate the Gross Rating Points achieved in media schedules makes perfect sense until you realize it equates dissimilar properties and treats them as though they are...

Show your audience the benefit of doing business with you. Give them a visual of the time saved or frustrations avoided by using your product. Ian says, “It speaks to the simplicity of consumer experience and product experience. [Identifying] pain points of, ‘Hey, this thing is annoying. I bet you something will fix that.'” And Doug adds, “I think as a marketer, part of my job is to help, both internally and externally, audiences understand the future and be ready for it. And so I think a key component of this campaign is that ability to predict the future. And have a point of view.”Intrigue is a powerful tool. Make your audience question and think about the possibilities if they were to buy your product. Start with a question. In the AT&T “You Think” campaign, they started each ad with something like: “Have you ever kept an eye on your home when you're not at home?” Asking a question gets your audience engaged immediately by thinking of their answer. Have a strong close. This campaign is called the “You Will” campaign for a reason. Because each ad spot ended with the phrase, “You Will. And the company that will bring it to you: AT&T.” This campaign became iconic not just for its futuristic predictions, but for its strong copy. Doug says, “These commercials and these messages closed an ad as good as any I've ever seen. To me, this felt less like ads and more like little pieces of content.” Increase the frequency of your ads. Include two or three examples of the benefits of your product. It's essentially fitting multiple ads in one, and uses the power of repetition. In each ad from the AT&T “You Will” campaign, they asked three questions. For example, “Have you ever opened doors with the sound of your voice, carried your medical history in your wallet, or attended a meeting in your bare feet?” And each question suggested a new technology AT&T was working on. Doug says, “A 30-second commercial would have three of them in a row. And so they get two or three of these in what was a standard spot length. And so you got frequency as part of that as well, which is just brilliant.”Quotes*”I don't care if it's 1 second, 5 seconds, 20 seconds or 20 minutes. Good pieces of content, branded content, need a beginning, middle, and end. And I think that's what [the AT&T “You Will”] campaign has. And I'd say 90 percent of campaigns don't have that. ”*”A key component of story building is data. The fact that research was the foundation to which then the stories came to life. I think a lot of times, building a story is about having that data and doing something with it in a really interesting way. And being okay that we don't know how to solve it, but we're going to craft a story about our role, even though we're in the process of solving it. That's bold.”*”I think it's important for all marketers to believe in your product. If you don't, then I think you're going to be missing the passion and zest that is necessary to be a good marketer. If you don't, how do you find the magic? To me, the magic is what makes marketing great.”*”That's such an important factor in today's marketing landscape, is just to know who you are, and more importantly, know who you're not. And if you're going to make a moment, really make it stand out and, and really trust yourself.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Rokt CMO Doug Rozen[1:51] The Impact of Storytelling vs. Story Building in Marketing[3:43] The Genius Behind Predicting the Future: AT&T's Marketing Mastery[15:35 Exploring the Role of Data in Product Success[22:04] Unveiling Brand Identity and the Power of Category Creation[23:16] The Art of Timeless Campaigns and Content Marketing Mastery[23:41] Reviving Classic Campaigns: A Nostalgic Marketing Strategy[24:27] The Evolution of AT&T's Marketing Strategy: A Case Study[25:22] The Impact of Leadership Changes on Marketing Campaigns[25:41] Sustaining Iconic Ad Campaigns and Brand Identity[30:40] The Strategic Shift in Marketing Approach at Rokt[33:03] Leveraging Employee Influence in Content Strategy[35:00] The Future of E-commerce and Content Marketing[41:37] Content Strategy Insights for CMOsLinksConnect with Doug on LinkedInLearn more about RoktAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Buy Like a Guy will be exploring topics beyond fine jewelry to include other areas of interest for men. But before I go, I'll talk about diamond reports, and reiterate once again the importance of seeking expert guidance when buying diamonds.
