In this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman welcomes the newly minted Dr. Ky'a Jackson, to discuss her doctoral research which focused on the academic resilience of African-American female college students from Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Jackson explains how the intersection of race, gender, and place shaped the students' experiences, drawing heavily on her own background growing up in Camden.Lloyd and Dr. Jackson discuss the societal and personal pressures these young women face, the critical role of "golden nuggets" of support from their community, and the specific strategies they employ to persevere. She introduces two memorable frameworks: the "Four Cs" (Color, Carat, Clarity, Cut) to describe the pressures that shaped these students, and the "SHINE" acronym (Stability, Help, Investment, Nurturing, Empathy) as a guide for others to support them effectively.Dimensions of Diversity is a podcast created by Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, highlighting diversity in the workplace. Hosted by Lloyd Freeman, Chief Experience Officer, the podcast features meaningful conversations with industry and community leaders working to advance D&I.
How does a luxury brand honor the past while embracing the future? La Joya masters this by treating traditional craftsmanship as the foundation and contemporary design as the language. By blending age-old setting techniques with modern silhouettes, they ensure every piece feels timeless yet current. In a candid look at the supply chain, La Joya discusses the rigorous challenges of ethical and sustainable sourcing. Beyond simple certifications, the brand has overcome immense logistical hurdles to ensure that every gemstone is conflict-free and environmentally responsible, setting a new gold standard for transparency in high jewelry. ✨ Preserving the "One-of-a-Kind" Feeling In the age of mass production, La Joya remains an outlier. They preserve an intimate, bespoke experience for every client. Each piece is treated as a unique narrative, ensuring that the wearer doesn't just own jewelry, but a "one-of-a-kind" artifact that cannot be replicated by a machine. When selecting stones, La Joya looks past the standard Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. They seek "character"—a specific fire and personality within the gemstone that signals it is destined for a La Joya setting. It's an intuitive, artistic selection process that prioritizes the stone's unique soul over technical metrics alone. When asked about legacy, the vision is clear: La Joya creates heirloom pieces intended to be passed down through generations. The goal is for a piece to tell a story of love, resilience, and artistry 50 years from now, acting as a tangible bridge between the past and the future. La Joya is evolving to meet the tastes of Gen Z and Alpha collectors by leaning into personalization and digital transparency. By staying true to their core identity—quality and ethics—they are successfully attracting a new generation that values values as much as aesthetics. Rugby fans and supporters at the recent South Africa versus Ireland game last weekend consumed over 2,000 GB of data, the equivalent of two million minutes of music streaming, according to Vodafone Ireland. The surge in data was driven by video recording, sharing and live streaming. Over 15,000 calls were made over the course of match-day - almost one third of the stadium made a phone call. During the Quilter Autumn Internationals, data usage at the stadium reflected strong engagement with fans attending the Japan game consuming almost 1,740 GB and Australia 1,771 GB. The fans at the South Africa game came in with the highest usage. Connectivity demand extended beyond rugby. At this summer's concerts featuring Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa, attendees consumed 5,137 GB of data across two nights. On the Lana Del Rey night alone, usage reached 2,633 GB, roughly the equivalent of ten years of nonstop podcast listening. Vodafone Ireland invests over €100 million annually in network improvements across Ireland, including upgrades at the Aviva Stadium which focus on delivering uninterrupted mobile and 5G coverage. To meet growing demand, Vodafone Ireland has also implemented network enhancements at Aviva Stadium as part of its nationwide investment program. These include: Deploying 5G capacity and spectrum utilisation in busy sectors. Optimising radios and backhaul for peak-hour demand. Continuous monitoring to adjust parameters during live events. Commenting on the figures, Sheila Kavanagh, Director of Vodafone Networks Ireland, said: "The data and voice activity we've seen at the Aviva Stadium this year shows just how essential reliable connectivity is for sports fans and music lovers. Over the course of the South Africa match-day alone, over 15,000 calls were made alongside significant data usage. Our ongoing investment, including 5G upgrades in the Aviva and throughout the country, ensures we can meet this demand and keep people connected during the biggest and most memorable moments." Investment also supported major summer festivals and cultural gatherings across Ireland. Temporary network sites and spectrum optimisation were deployed at events such as Flavours of Fingal, Bord Bia Bloom, Kaleidoscope, All Together Now and Electric Picnic where attendees relied heavily on navigation, social media, and streaming apps. Across these events, Vodafone Ireland managed over 220 TB of data, the equivalent of streaming 73 million songs! As sponsor of Irish Rugby, Vodafone marked the autumn series with a creative activation in Dublin city centre. A mural by artist KinMx on Chatham Row, developed in partnership with Carat, The Collectiv and Rockshot, celebrated the sport and its supporters. See more stories here. An insured filed a claim for a lost diamond earring. The stud and its match were scheduled as 1.00 Carat each, “I” color and SI clarity, for $8,000. Her insurer asked Gemcor create a match. When we received the mate, we ran our standard test and found something unexpected: the diamond wasn't natural. It was lab-grown. In the years since its purchase, the replacement cost for lab-grown diamonds has plummeted. But the insured believed they were both natural, and wants a natural replacement. Notable Timestamps [ 00:58 ] - A client filed a claim for a lost diamond earring, but the mate, initially thought to be natural and scheduled for $8,000, was unexpectedly discovered to be lab-grown, with its replacement cost having plummeted. [ 01:28 ] - Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, grown from a seed crystal in a lab, and only very high-quality equipment can differentiate them. [ 02:08 ] - The main difference for lab-grown diamonds is value, as they are not rare. Natural diamonds take millions of years, while lab-grown are created in 30 days, making them significantly less expensive. [ 06:12 ] - An insured's original appraisal correctly stated "lab grown," but underwriting dropped this crucial detail from the policy, as the industry lacked awareness of its importance years ago. [ 10:10 ] - If an insurance company pays for a pair and later discovers the remaining earring is lab-grown, salvage recovery is minimal, as there's no market to resell them when new ones can be easily manufactured. [ 11:27 ] - A lab-grown diamond pair purchased for $8,000 in 2001 (or $2,000 two years ago) can now be replaced by the original jeweler for $1,000 or less due to plummeting market prices. [ 14:04 ] - The purpose of insurance is to make the insured whole by replacing the item with like kind and quality, not necessarily the original dollar amount, which is impactful when lab-grown prices change quickly. [ 16:45 ] - Ali & Dana provide a recap of the points above. Chapter 2: The Four C's (Part 2) Episode Overview Andy finishes the Four C's conversation with Clarity and Carat Weight, delivers his legendary Diamond-to-Steak conversion chart, and cuts through the industry's microscopic bullshit to give you what actually matters when you're standing in that jewelry store. Key Takeaways The Clarity Reality Check: She doesn't need a flawless diamond unless she specifically asked for one - she just wants it to look that way Clarity grades are determined by gemologists with microscopes, not naked eyes in natural lighting The difference between technically flawless and "looks flawless" can save you thousands 99% of diamond inclusions are invisible without specialized equipment Focus on VS2-SI1 for best value - they look identical to higher grades but cost significantly less Carat Weight - Size vs. Reality: One carat = 0.2 grams = about one Skittle (finally, a measurement that makes sense) Carat measures weight, not size - two diamonds can weigh the same but look completely different Diamond cutters face a constant battle: preserve weight (money) vs. create ideal proportions (beauty) The real artists sacrifice weight for performance every time The Money-Saving Secret: Diamonds jump in price at half and whole carat marks A 0.9 carat might cost 20% less than a 1.0 carat of identical quality Nobody can spot the difference with the naked eye Buy just under those magic thresholds: 0.9 instead of 1.0, 1.4 instead of 1.5 The Quick Decision Guide: Cut Grade: Excellent/Ideal worth every penny, Very Good is the sweet spot, Good or lower proceed with caution Color: G-H is the sweet spot, I-J smart value, D-F if you have the budget and appreciate the difference Clarity: VS2-SI1 best value, SI2 can work if inspected, Flawless-VVS for bragging rights The Diamond-to-Steak Conversion Chart: Cut = Chef's Skill: Best beef poorly cooked is a travesty, average beef perfectly cooked is a religious experience Color & Clarity = Grade of Beef: Prime costs more than choice, you're paying for rarity within rarity Carat Weight = Portion Size: An 8-ounce filet costs more than a 6-ounce of the same quality Memorable Quote "A good diamond will be good forever. A bad diamond will be bad forever." - Andy's reminder that this decision has permanent consequences. What's Next The "investment value" of diamonds - and dear Lord, they've got it so wrong. Buying advertising is a lot like buying diamonds.Allow me to explain.Anyone who talks to a jeweler will be told that diamonds are graded according to the 4 C's: Color, Clarity, Carat weight, and Cut.Customers ask the jeweler, “Which of the 4 Cs is most important?”This seems like a perfectly reasonable question, but the truth is that the 4 C's cannot be compared to one another. There is no rubric, no metric, no algorithm that can equate them. The 4 C's are distinctly separate from one another. They are not interchangeable.Advertising is like that. Each of the characteristics of highly effective advertising are distinctly separate from one another. They are not interchangeable.Natural diamonds can be an infinite number of shades of yellow, grey, brown, green, blue, red, or a mixture thereof. Diamonds can also be colorless. The only thing more valuable than a colorless diamond is an extremely colorful one.Color is a measurement of rarity, not beauty.Clarity is another measurement of rarity, not beauty.“Flawless” clarity refers to a diamond which is free of inclusions under 10x magnification. But under 40x magnification every flawless diamond is swimming with inclusions that cannot be seen under 10x. So get this idea of “flawless” out of your head, okay? It is a myth.Seven clarity grades below flawless is another clarity known as SI2, which looks flawless to the naked eye. Not even a jeweler can tell the difference without 10x magnification. But there is a huge difference in price between flawless and SI2 because Clarity is a measurement of rarity, not beauty, remember?Carat weight is how the size of a diamond is measured. We'll come back to this in a minute.Cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond, but to the ability of the diamond to gather light, bounce it between the facets, and then shine it upward toward the eyes. When diamonds are cut perfectly, they do not leak light out of the bottom of the diamond. A perfectly cut diamond returns 100% of internalized light upward and outward in a wild spectacle of sparkles. You want sparkles, but you also want carat weight. When you cut a diamond crystal perfectly, you lose more than half of that diamond's Carat weight. But if you cheat the cut a little, the diamond won't sparkle as much but it will weigh more and sell for more money. If you cut the diamond with a thick girdle and a deep pavilion, the diamond will be dull because its internal mirrors will be misaligned, but it will be much heavier than if it were cut properly.A Carat is a unit of weight. There are 141.748 Carats in an ounce. This means that a small pouch of 1-Carat diamonds worth just $4,000 each will cost you $567,000 an ounce.Pure gold is less than $3,000 an ounce. Are you beginning to understand why diamond cutters are loath to grind away precious carat weight in the quest for maximum sparkle?Your logical mind tells you that it should be possible to create a diamond algorithm that says, “one colorgrade = 0.05 carats = 0.78 of a clarity grade = 2.13% excess weight above the projected carat weight for a perfectly cut diamond of this diameter.”Your logical mind tells you this because you continue to believe that dissimilar properties such as color, clarity, carat weight, and cut can be quantified, codified, and reconciled. In truth, they cannot.Buying advertising is even more complicated than buying diamonds. The rubric used to calculate the Gross Rating Points achieved in media schedules makes perfect sense until you realize it equates dissimilar properties and treats them as though they are...

Just because Google's deprecation of third-party cookies is indefinitely delayed, doesn't mean that brands should throw their first-party data strategies out the window. Today we're going to talk about cookieless advertising and how advertisers can thrive with a first-party data approach.
