Stephen Grootes speaks to Miyelani Holeni about what Enoch Godongwana signalled in the Budget Speech, a decisive shift toward enforcing fiscal discipline at municipal level to fix failing water and electricity services, with the City of Johannesburg collecting billions in water revenue but reinvesting only a fraction and contributing to a R64 billion backlog. The Finance Minister warned that diverting service revenue away from infrastructure maintenance risks systemic collapse.

The government tax on spirits is expected to breach the R100 mark per 750ml bottle when Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana delivers his Budget Speech for 2026. As a result, the tax imposed will in many cases be the biggest component of the cost to the consumer, ranging between 55-65% of the retail selling price of mainstream spirits products. Diageo South Africa is warning that this may drive consumers towards the tax-evading illicit alcohol market.

John Maytham is joined by public law attorney Michael Evans to unpack his five point plan for rescuing South Africa’s struggling municipalities. With only 13 percent of municipalities achieving clean audits in 2024 and over R107 billion owed to Eskom and water boards, Evans outlines practical structural reforms including cutting the number of municipalities, banning cadre deployment, and changing coalition governance rules to restore service delivery and local accountability ahead of the 2026 elections. There've been voices raised around the failure, twice, of finance minister Enoch Godongwana to pass a 2025 budget through parliament, each time trying in vain to slip in a VAT increase to cover for the ANCs inability to grow the economy. We should not, the argument goes, be flinging mud at an institution so central to our democracy, actually mentioned in the Constitution, whatever the politics may be. That's just nonsense, veteran financial journalist and former Treasury spokesman Jabulani Sikhakhane tells Peter Bruce in this edition of Podcasts from the Edge. “To whom much power is given, much is expected,” says Sikhakhane. “We criticise the judiciary so why would you not criticise the Reserve Bank or the National Treasury? The judiciary is a creation of the Constitution too. I don't think they should be protected. To disagree with the Reserve Bank or the Treasury about policy or the decisions they makes very healthy for democracy.”
Motheo Khoaripe speaks to Khaya Sithole, independent analyst about the R2 billion guarantee approved by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to secure Ithala Bank's retail depositors, amid controversy and opposition from KwaZulu-Natal finance MEC Francois Rodgers. In other interviews, Faro Co- Founder Amber Penney chats about how the startup Faro is using AI to tackle the fashion industry's waste problem by giving last season's stock a new lease on life, offering affordable premium fashion to consumers.
