Catalyst with Shayle Kann
How China is reshaping the global auto market

In 2020, China exported about a million cars a year. Now, it's tracking somewhere around twelve million — surpassing the historic peaks of giants like Japan and Germany.  Yet this massive global shift feels nearly invisible in the U.S. A 100% tariff on Chinese vehicles, combined with strict rules keeping Chinese hardware and software off American roads, has effectively built a regulatory wall around the domestic market. But in virtually every other corner of the globe, Chinese automakers are dramatically reshaping markets — from Europe and Southeast Asia to Latin America and Canada. In this episode, Shayle sits down with Michael Dunne, the CEO of Dunne Insights and author of the upcoming book Car Wars. Shayle and Michael map out the chaotic dynamics of the global auto market and consider what's actually happening inside China's automotive powerhouse. And they explore the biggest question of all: can America permanently shield legacy automakers, or is it just delaying an inevitable wave? Shayle and Michael discuss topics including: - How China successfully applied its massive manufacturing capacity to the automobile industry. - The market forces governing China's massive car exports - Unpacking the two tiers of Chinese automakers: Legacy scale giants like BYD, Geely, and SAIC versus the "Teslas of China” like Xiaomi, Xpeng, Leapmotor, and Nio. - Why China's expansion is already forcing major European and Japanese automakers to plan for closures and layoffs. - How regulatory frameworks in China are accelerating the commercialization of autonomous driving far quicker than in the U.S. - Concerns over cybersecurity in Chinese automobiles - Driving with Dunne podcast - Catalyst: Repurposing EV batteries for grid storage - Catalyst: Demystifying the Chinese EV market - Catalyst: Has Humble Robotics cracked the code on autonomous trucking? - Open Circuit: The AI race is really an electro-industrial race, led by China - Latitude Media: Rivian and EnergyHub are teaming up on managed charging Credits: Hosted by Shayle Kann. After a few months away, Watts & Wheels returns for the fifth episode of season 1, with William Kelly in studio and Duncan McLeod dialling in from the Southern Cape. Watch episode 5 now In episode 5, William and Duncan dive into: • The new Suzuki Across, an entry-level SUV priced from R350 000 to R465 000 that squares up against Suzuki's own Grand Vitara – and the welcome return of physical knobs and buttons, a trend Volkswagen is following, too. • Dongfeng's expanding EV range – the Nami 01, Nami 06 and E3 – a clutch of sub-R500 000 models turning up the heat in South Africa's budget EV price war. • Why fuel pain may be a tipping point: AutoTrader reports a jump in EV searches after the latest petrol and diesel hikes, with cheap used EVs vanishing fast. • The spiralling cost of car ownership, from ad valorem “bracket creep” to research showing it takes nearly 15 000 minimum-wage hours to buy a VW Polo locally, against roughly 1 600 in the UK. • A Polo milestone – 500 000 of the current generation exported – and finance minister Enoch Godongwana lifting the ministerial car price cap to R1.1-million. • Whether Johannesburg's City Power should be rolling out public EV chargers while it struggles to keep the lights on. The “Crazy Chinese” segment serves up a Yangwang – BYD's luxury arm – swimming across a lake, before the episode's highlight: an in-studio interview with Gary Davies, the South African behind a purpose-built electric game-viewing vehicle. Dubbed the “Bentley of the bush”, it pairs a 63kWh battery and two 150kW motors with clip-on body panels and a biomimicry-inspired cooling fan, engineered locally with the University of Pretoria. William then lives with Leapmotor's C10 range-extended EV for a week and comes away pleasantly surprised – seriously comfortable, remarkably quiet and frugal, if let down by a fiddly key and an all-touchscreen cabin. The show signs off with Hot or Not. TechCentral

They dive into real-world range, the local support infrastructure provided by Stellantis's investment, and how over-the-air updates have tamed early frustrations with the vehicle's driver assistance systems. Chery montiert in Barcelona. BYD produziert in Ungarn.

Capital

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2026 4:35

Rising fuel prices, along with competitive pricing and advanced technology, are boosting sales of Chinese electric vehicle brands in Germany, as consumers increasingly weigh cost, features and performance alongside environmental considerations. Battery EV registrations reached 70,700 in March, up 66.2 percent year-on-year, while those for plugin hybrid EVs rose 13 percent to 29,900, according to figures released by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority on April 7. Chinese automakers also saw increased traction in March, with brands such as BYD and Leapmotor recording roughly threefold year-on-year increases in registrations, while Xpeng more than doubled its figures, reflecting growing acceptance among German consumers. Rising fuel costs are a key driver. Diesel reached around 2.5 euros ($2.94) per liter on April 7, while E10 gasoline stood at approximately 2.24 euros, according to the General German Automobile Club. The surge follows disruptions to oil transport routes linked to tensions in the Middle East, adding to Europe's already elevated energy costs. Filling my Audi Q5 now costs 125 euros, up from 90 euros before the Middle East conflict," said Andreas Heumann, a Berlin resident considering a plug-in hybrid. "If prices stay high, switching cars becomes an economic decision." For many households, higher running costs for petrol and diesel vehicles are prompting changes in purchasing behaviors. Some buyers are delaying vehicle purchases, while others are increasingly shifting to electric alternatives. EVs are becoming central to how consumers manage cost uncertainty," said Zheng Yun, senior partner at Munich-based consultancy Roland Berger. "When fuel prices rise sharply, the total cost of ownership for combustion vehicles increases immediately, making EVs comparatively more attractive." The German government has moved to temper the impact. Since April 1, petrol stations have been limited to one price increase per day to reduce volatility, while Germany's economy and energy minister, Katherina Reiche, has proposed lowering household electricity taxes. Analysts, however, caution that such measures may only partially offset the sustained pressure from high fuel prices. Thus, EVs are increasingly viewed not just as an environmentally friendly choice, but also as a rational economic decision. Dmitrij Kolesnik, a Berlin-based dealer, said that Chinese EVs are gaining recognition among consumers for their competitive pricing, solid quality and advanced technology. The change is evident on showroom floors.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2026 3:18

GoPro cut 23% of their workforce this morning. Over 1,600 companies have announced layoffs since January 1st as AI eliminates jobs faster than any recovery can replace them. Apple former insiders confirmed this week that Apple had a 5-year head start on AI and wasted it — Siri still trailing ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude in 2026. And NIO confirmed today their in-house Shenji chip is going into the Onvo L90 launching April 21st — meaning NIO's own semiconductor technology now runs across Firefly, Onvo, and the NIO main brand. Shenji chips are already being pitched to Leapmotor and Geely as a third party supply business. NIO is not just a car company. They're building an AI chip ecosystem inside a car company. Obi breaks down what the AI layoff wave means for everyday Americans, why Apple's failure is the most important business lesson of 2026, and why the Shenji chip story is the most underappreciated investment thesis in the EV space right now. In this episode of China EVs & More, Tu and Lei unpack a rapidly changing global automotive landscape where Chinese EV technology is increasingly powering the future of the industry — even outside China.  The discussion begins with a major shift: European and global automakers are increasingly adopting Chinese EV platforms, batteries, and autonomous driving technology. Stellantis is now exploring LeapMotor technology for Europe, Ford is integrating Chinese battery tech into its upcoming affordable EV, and even German brands are leaning heavily on China to stay competitive.Tu and Lei argue that “China for China” has evolved into “win in China to win globally.” German automakers remain deeply dependent on China for growth, while American automakers face a different challenge: how to remain competitive as Chinese innovation accelerates. The episode also dives deep into the global autonomous vehicle race. Waymo continues scaling robotaxi operations across multiple cities, while Baidu, Pony.ai, and WeRide expand internationally and rapidly accumulate real-world autonomous miles. Meanwhile, new players like Wayve are emerging as potential challengers in the autonomy software space. The hosts explore whether Tesla's robotaxi ambitions can disrupt the existing ecosystem — and why platform players like Uber could ultimately become the dominant intermediaries in autonomous mobility. Finally, Tu and Lei reflect on the future of robotics, automation, and autonomous logistics — from robotaxis to autonomous snowplows, delivery robots, railcars, and even wheelchairs — raising an important question: will autonomy create abundance or major labor disruption? This episode captures a pivotal moment in the EV and autonomy revolution, where the competition is no longer about powertrains — it's about technology ecosystems, speed of innovation, and global scale.

German wait times now stretch up to 17 months, prompting Volvo to negotiate shorter summer breaks with unions, mirroring BMW's own ramp-up for the iX3. VOLVO PUSHES NEW UX TO 2.5 MILLION CARS  Volvo is rolling out a major over‑the‑air update to around 2.5 million vehicles, bringing its latest infotainment system from the EX30, EX90 and EX60 models to cars as old as 2020. The update ushers in a unified user interface and, later this spring, a switch from Google Assistant to the more conversational Google Gemini AI. CUPRA RAVAL SPIED UNCOVERED AHEAD OF MARCH 2026 REVEAL  Cupra's upcoming Raval — its most affordable EV yet — has been spotted fully uncovered during Scandinavian winter testing. Riding on the new MEB+ platform with two battery options, it launches mid‑2026 from around £23,000 to rival the Renault 5 and Peugeot e‑208 in the urban EV segment.  DENMARK HITS 81.6% BEV SHARE IN FEBRUARY  Battery‑electric vehicles made up 81.6% of Denmark's new car sales in February, surging to 94.4% among private buyers. The shift reflects strong government incentives and rapid public adoption as EVs become the mainstream choice in the Danish market.  2026 WORLD CAR AWARDS SHORTLISTS TILT ELECTRIC  Electric models dominate the 2026 World Car Awards shortlist, with the BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and Mercedes‑Benz CLA leading major categories. Luxury and performance finalists like the Lucid Gravity and Hyundai Ioniq 6 N further show how EVs now span every segment from affordable urban cars to high‑end models.  2027 BMW IX4 SET FOR X4 REPLACEMENT  BMW's 2027 iX4 coupe SUV is testing in Sweden, set to replace the X4 with two all‑wheel‑drive variants and a 108 kWh battery offering up to 800 km WLTP range. It adopts BMW's latest design language and a minimalist cabin similar to the iX3, with a large central screen and refreshed controls.  BARCELONA TO PAY €600 FOR ELECTRIC MOPED SWAPS  Barcelona will grant residents €600 to trade in petrol mopeds for new electric ones starting March 2026, covering up to 40% of the purchase price. With €15 million in funding through 2030, the scheme could replace around 24,000 mopeds and is open on a first‑come, first‑served basis.  ENBW SIGNS MULTI-YEAR XCHARGE DEAL FOR HYPERNET  German utility EnBW has sealed a multi‑year deal with XCharge to supply 400 kW DC fast chargers for its HyperNet network after successful trials. The high‑power C7 units, supporting dual CCS connectors and liquid‑cooled cables, will serve high‑throughput highway and hub charging locations.  STELLANTIS SETS 2026 SPAIN BUILD FOR LEAPMOTOR B10  Stellantis will start producing the Leapmotor B10 electric SUV in Spain in late 2026, marking the brand's European manufacturing debut. The €29,990 model anchors Leapmotor's expansion through Stellantis's joint venture, which now runs over 800 European sales points and continues rapid growth.  THATCHAM TARGETS EV WRITE-OFFS WITH REPAIR BLUEPRINT  Thatcham Research has launched an EV Blueprint to stop repairable electric cars being written off after minor crashes by improving safety, diagnostics and battery repair standards. The plan calls for modular, serviceable battery designs, open diagnostic tools, and replaceable safety components to cut repair costs and extend EV lifespan.

The 2027 lineup also adds a first-ever iX4 coupe-SUV in two variants, an iX3 in three configurations launching in North America this summer, an electric iX5, and an i3 M60 alongside a full electric M3 positioned as the spiritual successor to today's M3 Competition.TESLA BERLIN RUNS HALF FULL AS UNION ROW SIMMERSTesla's Gigafactory Berlin produced 211,235 vehicles in 2024 against a stated annual capacity of 375,000 — a 56% utilisation rate — and output has since declined further, with the factory now reportedly running at around 40% capacity and BYD outselling Tesla in Europe in January 2026. Labour tensions are deepening ahead of works council elections, with IG Metall pursuing collective wage agreements similar to those at Volkswagen and BMW, while Tesla filed a criminal complaint against a union member and Elon Musk warned that "outside organisations" could hinder the site's ambition to become Europe's largest factory complex.T&E: LOCAL BATTERIES COULD CUT COST GAPA Transport & Environment report argues the EU can shrink the cost gap between domestically made and Chinese batteries from 90% to around 30% through scaled-up local production, with higher automation and lower scrap rates potentially cutting the gap to $14 per kWh by 2030 — equivalent to roughly €500 on an average EV. The findings align with the EU's forthcoming Industrial Accelerator Act, which targets ~70% local content thresholds for publicly supported EVs, though some carmakers warn this risks making batteries prohibitively expensive while T&E's Julia Poliscanova calls it "a sovereignty premium worth paying," particularly given China's export restrictions on critical minerals.TRIBUNAL BACKS 5% VAT ON SOME PUBLIC CHARGINGA UK tax tribunal has ruled against HMRC in a case brought by community charging operator Charge My Street, finding that a de-minimis clause in the VAT Act 1994 — capping "domestic" supplies at 1,000 kWh per month per customer — can qualify most neighbourhood charge points for the 5% reduced VAT rate rather than the 20% rate currently applied to public charging. The ruling is significant for drivers without off-street parking, though it also raises commercial complications, as many charge point operators have multi-year contracts priced on 20% VAT, and it opens the door to networks gaming the threshold by splitting sites or charger banks into separate "premises".ŠKODA OPENS €205M CTP BATTERY PLANT IN CZECHIAŠkoda has opened a €205 million (~$216M), 55,000 m² battery production facility at Mladá Boleslav, making it the Volkswagen Group's largest BEV battery system site and the first VW Group plant in Europe to manufacture cell-to-pack (CTP) systems at scale. The line produces over 1,100 battery systems per day — targeting up to 335,000 annually — and Škoda's switch to LFP cells has cut battery production costs by 30% compared to its previous MEB systems.MG CLOSES IN ON EUROPEAN FACTORY PLANMG has narrowed its European factory search to five countries, aiming to begin production by 2027 to circumvent the EU's 45% tariff on Chinese-built BEVs — a levy that caused MG's European BEV sales to fall 33% to 48,479 units last year, even as overall European sales rose 26% to 307,282 units in 2025. MG Europe head William Wang declared "it's time to build local," positioning the brand as a European marque rather than a Chinese import, as rivals BYD, Chery, and Leapmotor also race to establish European manufacturing footholds.CITROËN UPDATES C5 AIRCROSS PHEV FOR EURO 7Citroën has refreshed the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid with a new 21.5 kWh battery (17.8 kWh usable), delivering up to 96 km (60 miles) of WLTP combined electric range — a 33% improvement over the outgoing model and ahead of rivals like the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 (69 km) and Ford Kuga PHEV (64 km). Priced in the €40–50k range, Citroën positions the updated C5 Aircross as one of the most tax-efficient family SUVs in the mainstream segment across EU markets while still targeting Euro 7 compliance.CANADIAN TRIAL PEGS ELECTRIC SEMI SAVINGS AT $157,126A real-world Canadian trial by FPInnovations' PIT Group and Transport Canada tracked two commercial fleets over 12 months and more than 200,000 km of Montreal-area operations, projecting savings of $157,126 per truck over six years — described as the most comprehensive dataset of its kind outside controlled demonstrations. The study compared the Freightliner eCascadia (BEV) directly against the diesel Cascadia and found that despite the electric truck's higher purchase price, higher-than-expected maintenance costs, and lower residual value, a six-year saving still emerged and may prove conservative.DENZA D9 ELECTRIC MPV ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIADenza has launched the D9 electric MPV in Australia from A$85,990, powered by a 103.3 kWh Blade Battery with 200 kW DC fast charging, 11 kW AC charging, and V2L capability across both variants, all built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with a cell-to-body battery structure. The seven-seat, three-row cabin targets the premium end of the people-mover segment with nappa leather, open-pore white ash wood trim, a 14-speaker Dynaudio sound system, adaptive suspension, and second-row captain's chairs offering over 900 mm of legroom, massage, and individual screens.CHINESE CAR BRANDS SPLIT US BUYERSA Cox Automotive survey of 802 prospective US car buyers found the country almost evenly divided — 38% would consider Chinese brands if available, 39% would not — with Gen Z showing notably higher openness at 69%. Chinese brands remain locked out of the US market by high tariffs and software regulations, but cost pressure is a key driver of interest, with 68% of open buyers expecting lower prices against an average new car price of $50,000, while BYD has already surpassed Tesla in European EV sales.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1268: Today we cover Lithia's reluctance to sell Chinese brands in the U.S., Stellantis quietly bringing diesel back to Europe as EV demand cools, and how companies like Canva and Meta are now testing job candidates on how well they use AI instead of banning it.Show Notes with links: Lithia Motors CEO Bryan DeBoer signaled the company is not planning to be an early retailer of Chinese vehicles in the U.S. or Canada, citing the lack of a built-in service base to support long-term profitability.DeBoer said without an established fleet of vehicles on the road, new Chinese brands would not provide the recurring service traffic dealerships rely on.After-sales generated 41% of Lithia's gross profit in 2025 with a 58% gross margin.Lithia currently sells several Chinese brands in the U.K., including BYD, MG, Chery, Leapmotor and Jaecoo, across a “double-digit” number of stores.DeBoer said entering the U.S. market would require a broader partnership with a Chinese automaker, including greater control over after-sales operations and potentially pricing, in order to make the economics work without an existing service base.Stellantis is quietly reintroducing diesel engines across at least seven models in Europe, positioning the automaker against Chinese EV competitors and responds to sustained customer demand.Diesel accounted for just 7.7% of European new car sales in 2025, compared to 19.5% for fully electric vehicles, but remains a lower-cost alternative for high-mileage and towing customers.Chris Knapman, CarGurus UK editorial director: “If you're a European brand looking to differentiate yourself, diesel is an area where you could have a competitive advantage over those newer brands.”A growing number of companies are no longer trying to prevent candidates from using AI during interviews — they're encouraging it. Firms like Canva, Meta and McKinsey are redesigning hiring processes to evaluate how well applicants work with AI tools.Canva reworked technical interviews to allow — and expect — AI use, focusing on complex problems where candidates must show how they interact with the tool, not just the output.Candidates share their screens or submit AI chat transcripts so interviewers can evaluate judgment, iteration and decision-making.Arcade, an IT startup, now expects candidates to use AI in take-home exercises, emphasizing a candidate's “taste” and ability to refine AI-generated work.Meta is developing AI-assisted coding interviews, and McKinsey is piloting case interviews using its internal AI tool, Lilli.“What we're testing for now … is an ability to harness that power, to control that power — to kind of ride the dragon,” said Canva CTO Brendan Humphreys.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

In Episode 236, Tu and Lei deliver one of their most wide-ranging and revealing conversations yet—covering Tesla's strategic retreat from cars, China's accelerating dominance in EVs, autonomy, and robotics, and unveiling the inaugural China EVs & More Awards - the EViesThe episode opens with Tesla's bombshell earnings call: the Model S and Model X are effectively retired, revenues decline for a second straight year, yet the stock rallies on promises of robotaxis, robotics, and AI abundance. Tu and Lei explain why Wall Street is betting on a future Tesla that is no longer a car company—and why China's crowded robotaxi and robotics markets make that future far less certain than investors believe. They contrast Tesla's promises with reality on the ground in China, where BYD, NIO, XPeng, Huawei, Geely, and Xiaomi are rapidly upgrading ADAS, launching new models, and redefining value. The discussion highlights how Western media is only now “discovering” vehicles like the Xiaomi SU7 and YU7, despite Chinese OEMs offering Model 3/Y-level features at half the price. The second half of the episode introduces the China EVs & More Awards, recognizing the companies, products, and people that defined the year—while exposing who fell behind. From Zombie Company of the Year to EV of the Year, the awards spark debate around survival, execution, and scale in the world's most competitive auto market. The episode closes with a sober look at automation, delivery, labor displacement, and UBI, asking whether autonomy will ultimately create abundance—or social shock—across global mobility systems.Insightful, provocative, and data-driven, this episode explains why China EV Inc. is no longer the future—it's the present.___
