Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that believes sharing our individual stories is a powerful way to inspire change. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with journalist and historian Eric Marcus (@makinggayhistorypodcast), the creator of Making Gay History, the podcast that brings LGBTQ+ history to life through intimate, first-person stories from the people who lived it. This is a bit of a heavier episode than we usually do, so please take care of your mental health and listen mindfully.  From conversations with trailblazers like Sylvia Rivera and Frank Kameny to countless unsung heroes whose stories deserve to be heard, Making Gay History is a powerful reminder that queer liberation has always been hard-won. (After all, the first Pride was a riot.) These first-hand accounts offer more than nostalgia. They're blueprints for a much needed resistance. At a time when book bans, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and chillingly fascist rhetoric are once again becoming the norm, Eric's archive provides a pivotal look into our collective past so that we can all be better prepared for the road ahead. The struggle sadly isn't new; but with a little courage and a lot of community, we believe that queer people will always persevere.  Eric shares the origins of Making Gay History (which originally started as a book in the late 80s!), the importance of preserving queer voices, and the deep responsibility of memory work in the face of erasure. This episode is both a tribute to the ancestors that fought for our rights and a call to action: to listen, to remember, and to keep telling our stories, especially now. You can explore Eric's archive and the most recent season of the podcast (A 12-part series about the experiences of LGBT+ people during the rise of the Nazi regime, World War II, and the Holocaust) at makinggayhistory.org.  Remember, you can give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod.  Find your fav tol and smol hosts Ellie & Leigh at @elliebrigida and @lshfoster respectively. I think that I might have met my match. For the last few years I've been feeling as though I'm the person who talks the most about lost queer spaces, but journalist David Kennerley might actually be ahead of me. He loves queer nightlife so much that he's gone and written a whole book about the long-lost gay scene of '90s New York City. The book, Getting In: NYC Club Flyers from the Gay 1990s, includes flyers that he collected throughout the '90s from legendary spaces like the Palladium, Limelight, Splash, and Tunnel. But out of all of these lost spaces it was The Roxy that had his heart. We caught up to talk about his book, his early days in NYC, and his journey with his queerness. Is it possible that my family, my mother, could ever accept me?Today we meet Eric Marcus and we're talking about the book that saved his life: Consenting Adult by Laura Z. Hobson.Eric Marcus is the author of a dozen books, including two editions of Making Gay History (the original 1992 edition is entitled Making History), Why Suicide?, and Breaking the Surface, the #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography of Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis. Eric is also the co-producer of Those Who Were There, a podcast drawn from the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies. He is the founder and chair emeritus of the Stonewall 50 Consortium and is a founding board member of the American LGBTQ+ Museum. In Consenting Adult, Tessa Lynn considers herself independent and progressive, a liberated woman of the 1960s. And yet, when she receives a letter from her youngest son, Jeff, informing her that he is gay, Tessa is distraught. At a time when homosexuality is regarded as a mental illness, she struggles with how best to be a parent to a gay son—and how to protect her family from the prejudices of the era. Elegant and subtly drawn, Consenting Adult is a stunning tribute to familial bonds, and a sympathetic portrait of a mother whose best intentions are often clouded by the stereotypes of her time.Connect with EricMaking Gay History website: makinggayhistory.org/aboutinstagram: @makinggayhistorypodcastfacebook: facebook.com/makinggayhistoryFortunoff Video Archive podcast: fortunoff.library.yale.edu/education/podcastsListen to full episode with Damien Martin: makinggayhistory.org/podcast/damien-martinOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for  new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBecome an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Join us as we welcome Eric Marcus, an acclaimed author and LGBTQ+ historian, who brings his deeply personal coming out story to the forefront. Together, we explore the emotional landscape of acceptance within families and the transformative power of advocacy, exemplified by his mother's pivotal role in co-founding the Queens chapter of PFLAG. Our conversation takes a heartfelt look at the roots of LGBTQ advocacy, where Eric shares his encounters with the early gay rights movement and pioneering organizations like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis. You'll hear touching stories of Jean Manford and her son Morty, the co-founders of PFLAG, and their relentless dedication. The devastating impact of the AIDS crisis also comes to light, with deeply personal stories of loss and resilience from families like the Ashworths. Through these narratives, we gain a richer understanding of the socio-political climate of the 1980s and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ rights. Eric also reflects on his accidental journey to becoming a historian, starting with an oral history book that evolved into the Making Gay History podcast. We'll discuss the challenges and emotional rewards of capturing these stories in print and audio, and how they continue to inspire educational initiatives. As we celebrate the resilience of the LGBTQ community, we emphasize the importance of passing the torch to future generations. Tune in for a powerful episode filled with personal reflections, historical insights, and a strong message of advocacy and unity.Resources Mentioned:Making Gay History Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-gay-history-lgbtq-oral-histories-from-the-archive/id1162447122Stonewall 50 Consortium: https://stonewall50consortium.org/American LGBTQ+ Museum: https://americanlgbtqmuseum.org/About Eric Marcus:Eric Marcus is the author of a dozen books, including two editions of Making Gay History (the original 1992 edition is entitled Making History), Why Suicide?, and Breaking the Surface, the #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography of Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis. I don't know about you, but I really like the idea of being referred to as a gay elder at some point in the future. The only part about it that worries me is that I hope I'm not expected to suddenly be wise or level-headed or clever or anything... And though this week's guest, Eric Marcus from the Making Gay History podcast, might not like being referred to as a gay elder, he's certainly got the credentials to bear this title. You probably already know about the Making Gay History podcast, but just in case you didn't it's an oral history podcast that explores different parts of queer history, like the AIDS crisis or growing up gay in the 70s. In fact, the new season is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, by exploring the myth of what that's become, and sharing stories from people who were actually there.  But, anyway, before he was a podcast host and before he was a gay geezer he was a baby gay in New York City. And it was here that he had an adventure or two on the dancefloors of the gay bars in Manhattan. One of which was the wonderfully named Ice Palace, which we discuss in this conversation. "All my love, Porcupine" was a poetic sign-off for one smitten woodland creature to her mousie lover. Throughout the 1970s and '80s, the personal ads to the Gay Community News in Boston began with an entry addressed to "Mousie Mousie Wildflower." And for once, Haley has found a (vaguely) satisfying conclusion to this classified ad mystery. Lessons of Advocacy from the LGBTQ Community. Our guest for this presentation is Eric Marcus, moderator of the podcast, Making Gay History. He will share with us his insights and experiences from the front lines from when and where it all began. We will hear the voices of many of the pioneers of the movement from his archives. Let's use this history of a group of individuals who risked it all to build a bridge upon which they continue to march into the light and dignity of full inclusion into American society, recognition of their diversity, their freedom of choice and their civil right to equality of opportunity to achieve their own unique visions of the American Dream. . Using tapes of interviews done with these pioneers, we learned of bravery in the face of such harsh discrimination as well as so many successful moments of advocacy in the movement. A recap of that call can be heard on BPI's current Pride Connection episode. We referred to those clips as well as some others in this discussion. We invited attendees to the discussion as we unpack what successful techniques applied and good troublemakers used to move the community out of the proverbial shadows and into the light of acceptance. We know the work is ongoing, but what can our community learn from these groundbreakers? How can we as Blind and low vision advocates borrow from the LGBTQIA plus activists?
