Sarah is crushing it and we celebrate what a difference a year can make. We hear why she insisted on naming all of her cats "Sam" sort of like George Foreman naming all of his kids George. We learn how the originator of the high five was discriminated against and ended up losing his job for being gay. Susie describes the Olympic moment when Greg Louganis hit his head on the diving board and how it forced him to make the ethical decision on whether to disclose his HIV+ diagnosis. We discuss an article in the New Yorker by John Lahr about what it was like to have the cowardly lion (Bert Lahr) from the Wizard oz Oz as his dad, the challenge of being a cultural icon, and how some people can be outgoing and gregarious in public and sullen and despondent in private. A man in England got three years of jail time for selling firesticks so people could illegally watch Premier League soccer (football). Susie shares the origins of the photo finish, how a horse once won because of a thread of saliva, the limits of accuracy, and how it relates to the Hawkeye system in tennis that determines whether a ball is in or out of bounds. We learn about a kayaker who had to have his leg amputated after getting it caught between two boulders, but we have some questions...Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Become the best version of yourself and get 15% off Ned products with code BRAINCANDY at https://helloned.com/BRAINCANDYGet 15% off LolaVie with the code BRAIN15 at https://www.lolavie.com/BRAIN15 #lolaviepodVisit https://www.carawayhome.com/BRAINCANDY to take advantage of this limited-time offer for up to 20% off your next purchase.Get 25% off your first month for a limited time at https://ritual.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As the Olympics come to a close, we wanted to share this story from Death, Sex & Money. During the 1988 Summer Olympics, diver Greg Louganis was competing under extreme pressure. In the preliminary round, he split his head open on the diving board, got stitched up, and decided to stay in the competition. He was also carrying a secret that only a few people knew: Six months before the Olympics began, Greg learned that he was HIV positive. Despite those obstacles, Greg went on to win gold in both the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events, thrilling viewers and cementing himself as one of the best divers of all time. USA! USA! USA! One thing about getting older that kind of sucks is not being as excited about things as we did as kids and young adults. I'll admit, I haven't watched any of the 2024 Olympics - but as a kid, the 1984 games in Los Angeles was a major event. I can remember where I was that summer and some moments are forever etched in my memory.I clearly remember the amazing Carl Lewis dominating, Mary Lou Retton becoming “America's Sweetheart”, Greg Louganis sweeping the diving events, and the men's basketball team (before pros were eligible) putting forth a squad made up of future hall of famers. Ever hear of Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, or Chris Mullin? With the USSR counter-boycotting the US's boycott of the 1980 games, the US team absolutely destroyed the field, with an overall medal count of 174. Second place? Federal Republic of (West) Germany with 59! While I wish I still got as hyped as I did when I was 10, it is still pretty cool that all the nations of the world gather once every four years to (mostly) put our differences aside and allow friendly competition through sports. Plus, I share some fun stuff that occurred this weekend and other random musings…
With the 2024 Games underway, Greg joins Anna to reflect on his odds-defying victories, and he explains how olympic training prepared him for life's challenges outside the pool. Join us as we welcome Eric Marcus, an acclaimed author and LGBTQ+ historian, who brings his deeply personal coming out story to the forefront. Together, we explore the emotional landscape of acceptance within families and the transformative power of advocacy, exemplified by his mother's pivotal role in co-founding the Queens chapter of PFLAG. Our conversation takes a heartfelt look at the roots of LGBTQ advocacy, where Eric shares his encounters with the early gay rights movement and pioneering organizations like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis. You'll hear touching stories of Jean Manford and her son Morty, the co-founders of PFLAG, and their relentless dedication. The devastating impact of the AIDS crisis also comes to light, with deeply personal stories of loss and resilience from families like the Ashworths. Through these narratives, we gain a richer understanding of the socio-political climate of the 1980s and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ rights. Eric also reflects on his accidental journey to becoming a historian, starting with an oral history book that evolved into the Making Gay History podcast. We'll discuss the challenges and emotional rewards of capturing these stories in print and audio, and how they continue to inspire educational initiatives. As we celebrate the resilience of the LGBTQ community, we emphasize the importance of passing the torch to future generations. Tune in for a powerful episode filled with personal reflections, historical insights, and a strong message of advocacy and unity.Resources Mentioned:Making Gay History Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-gay-history-lgbtq-oral-histories-from-the-archive/id1162447122Stonewall 50 Consortium: https://stonewall50consortium.org/American LGBTQ+ Museum: https://americanlgbtqmuseum.org/About Eric Marcus:Eric Marcus is the author of a dozen books, including two editions of Making Gay History (the original 1992 edition is entitled Making History), Why Suicide?, and Breaking the Surface, the #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography of Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis. Greg Louganis is considered the greatest diver in history. As a 3x Olympian, he is the only male to win gold medals on both 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform in consecutive Olympic Games (1984, 1988). With a total of 5 Olympic medals, 5 World Championship titles, 6 Pan American titles and 47 national titles, his records remain unbroken. His legacy was built through a life of adversity including his adoption, learning differences, a victim of bullying given his skin color, and almost walking away from his defining sport at the age of 11. His mindset to choose his own destiny, never give up and smile through it all was made possible by the ultimate belief of his mother, his coach, and his mental training. This process culminated in one of the most memorable Olympic performances of all time in which he hit the platform, split his head open, suffered a concussion then came back to win the gold! Today, as a coach, speaker, author, actor, activist, humanitarian and GOAT of mindset he continues his tradition of excellence. @greglouganis, greglouganis.com
