Leading up to our return in September, we are doing summer reruns, which is our way of repurposing episodes that with a little configuring (and retitling) might get more listens than they got back in the day. First up: Mama's Family! And next week, you'll be getting a full-fledged new episode about Saved by the Bell! Enjoy! “There Is Nothing Like the Dames” (February 17, 1990) Believe it or not, Mama's Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can't relate to his family back home. It's all the stranger to consider that Mama's Family never did an explicitly queer episode, even with all those Bob Mackie costumes. Read the article in which Bubba actor Allan Kayser talks about his famously tight jeans. Vicki Lawrence sings the original, non-instrumental version of the Mama's Family theme song. But also listen to her disco banger “Don't Stop the Music” and the no. 1 murder mystery pop hit “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Watch the brilliant 1982 TV movie adaptation of the Harper family saga, Eunice. Also watch The Carol Burnett Show's famous “Went With the Wind” sketch. But most importantly watch the original sketch version that led to Mama's Family, when it was just called “The Family.” It made Drew way more sad than sketch comedy usually does.

STRAIGHT MEMBERS OF THE COLORADO LEGISLATURE WANT TO IGNORE GAY HISTORY In the push to allow felons who declare they are transgender to legally change their names (thus allowing them to deny their criminal past) Gays Against Groomer's Rich Guggenheim went to testify at the Legislature against the bill. Here is his testimony:My name is Dr. Rich Guggenheim. I am a homosexual resident of Denver. I would like to take a moment of your time to share with you a prominent piece of the gay and lesbian liberation movement from Stonewall.I want to tell you about the history of Malcom Michaels Jr., and Tony Rivera. Both were gay, black men, sex workers, drag queens, and convicted felons. Both were well known in the gay community in the 1960s and 70s. Malcom may be more familiar to you by his drag name, Marsha P. Johnson and is falsely identified today as a transgender woman. Malcom was frequently seen with Tony Rivera, who went by the drag name Sylvia. Both were heavy cocaine users. In fact, the false narrative today is that Marsha threw the first brick, yet Marsha admitted to never even being at Stonewall and instead was with Sylvia, who was passed out from cocaine on a bench in Bryant Park.Marsha and Sylvia are also known for running the STAR house. A home for gay run-away boys as young as 10. STAR house is described as a child prostitution operation and "shelter.” The owner of the building, Michael "Dirty Mike" Umber, a Carlo Gambino soldier, made boy on boy porn. The children were sex trafficked on 42nd Street by Rivera and Michaels for "Matty" Lanniello and his crew. Today we have another former felon, black gay man, sex worker who identifies as transgender, and uses children to perform in sexually provocative shows in adult burlesque clubs in Colorado Springs promoting this bill. The parallels are astonishing! Gay and Lesbian people fought back against allowing people like Malcom and Rivera into the community. They pushed back and worked for decades to destroy the talking points from people like Anita Bryant that homosexuals are child pedophiles. Today, half a century later, we are here in this building, in this room, fighting the exact same fight. HB24-1071, introduced in the legislature, is being presented a group and individual who seek to allow convicted former felons like him to change his name and gender identity.Like Malcom and Rivera, a man who has a criminal record.Like Malcom and Rivera, a man who does drag.Like Malcom and Rivera, a man who works as a sex worker.Like Malcom and Rivera, a man who is purported to be a woman.Like Malcom and Rivera, a man who works with children in “adult art forms”.Like Malcom and Rivers, rightfully shunned by common sense adults; even in the LGB and T populations for their toxicity to our movement and cause for equality and freedom. Gay men and lesbian women fought against allowing these types of people to be associated with the “community” for a reason. The association of pedophiles and groomers with gays and lesbians was damaging and harmful to our fight for liberation, equality, and freedom. The passing of this bill will result in further homophobic attacks, increased accusations of us being pedophiles, and a continuing decline in the support for LGBTQ rights. I ask for a NO vote on HB24-1071.Apparently his accurate testimony struck a nerve and he was gaveled out, which is the equivalence of being given the hook while testifying. Rich joins me at 1 today to talk about this. Find out more about Gays Against Groomers by clicking here. Follow Rich on Social media by clicking here for Twitter.

We are thrilled to be back with a new episode of the Hyperallergic podcast. For our one hundredth episode, we spoke with legendary collage and mixed media artist Tommy Lannigan-Schmidt. His works, made from crinkly saran wrap and tin foil, emulate the gleam of precious metals and jewels in Catholic iconography. They reference his upbringing as a working class kid and altar boy in a Catholic community in Linden, New Jersey, where tin foil was an expensive luxury they could rarely afford. But they also hold memories of where he found himself as a teenager: the LBGTQ+ street life and art community of New York City, which led to his participation in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. Lanigan-Schmidt is as much a visual artist as he is a storyteller. We climbed up to his fourth floor walk-up in Hell's Kitchen, where, surrounded by teetering piles of books and artwork, he regaled us with tales about artists like Jack Smith and Andy Warhol, his decision to leave his hometown as a penniless teenager, his steadfast identity as a working class artist, his conversion to Russian Orthodox Christianity, what changed for gay artists in New York between the 1960s and today, and of course, his recollection of that historic night at the Stonewall. We know you'll enjoy this artist's sparkling humor and singular vision as he shares reflections on his life and this critical moment in history. We also talked with Ann Bausum, author of Stonewall, Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights, about the significance of the uprising. She also shared some of her own first-hand recollections of segregation in 1960s America. The music in this episode was written by Garen Gueyikian, with the exception of one track by Dr. Delight, courtesy of Soundstripe. A selection of Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's work will be on display at a show titled Open Hands: Crafting the Spiritual at Saint Louis University's Museum of Contemporary Religious Art until May 19, 2024. (00:00) - Intro (02:31) - Ann / Hrag (13:58) - Intro to Tommy (15:49) - Tommy / Hrag (01:30:05) - Outro Related Links:Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's 2012-2013 solo show at MoMA PS1, Tender Love Among the JunkLanigan-Schmidt's work at Pavel Zoubok Fine ArtGay and Proud, the 1970 film which documented a demonstration on Christopher Street on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, excerpted in this episode starting at 14:39Stonewall: Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights by Ann BausumWatch Flaming Creatures by Jack SmithDr. Wendy Schaller on Feast of St. Nicholas by Jan SteenAndy Warhol's portrait of Holly SolomonMario Banana, an Andy Warhol film with Mario Montez—Subscribe to Hyperallergic NewslettersBecome a member

Associate Professor of History at Kansas State University Phil Tiemeyer covered this topic in his book “Plane Queer: Labor, Sexuality, and AIDS in the History of Male Flight Attendants.” While the book covers almost a century of history, Phil sat down for an interview that focused on the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the way two flight gay male attendants with Pacific Northwest connections left their mark on history. They express concern about the fact that the shooter was transgender and worry about the potential increase in attacks against trans people as a result. The duo laments the lack of progress on gun control and the shortcomings of the American system, touching on issues like poverty-stricken individuals joining the military and returning with untreated mental health problems due to the inadequate healthcare system.Jim opens up about his childhood trauma and the lack of boundaries he experienced growing up, wondering how it has affected his mental health. Welcome to this week's hilarious and disastrous episode of "Not Well" with your favorite dynamic duo, Bobby and Jim. Starting off with a recording mishap, this episode is full of chaos, laughter, and a hint of existential crisis.Fresh from a boozy St. Patrick's Day happy hour, Bobby decides an edible is just what the doctor ordered. As they realize their recording mishap, the conversation turns to Bobby's upcoming trip to a gay campground called Camp Buckwood in Indiana. Jim warns Bobby to watch out for Mike Pence and "Mother" while he's there, and they banter about milkmaids and lead paint makeup.Jim spirals into a deep, dark place as he laments the difficulty of meeting new people in Columbus. He's convinced that everyone moves away and lives amazing lives, but Bobby reminds him that life is monotonous. They discuss astronomical bar tabs and why they should pay for themselves instead of a group of people. The conversation shifts to old women talk shows like Drew Barrymore's, with Jim insisting that she's old. Bobby reminds him that maybe he's just getting old, too. Speaking of mortality, they share their current adult situations about choosing their end-of-life options. The topic takes a sharp turn into the realm of student council and singing for old people at the nursing home. Bobby admits he's actually scared of old people and special needs individuals, while Jim shares his own nursing home horror story involving cleaning old people after bathroom breaks. They reminisce about the good old days when Nina West and her drag mother, Virginia West, were regulars in Columbus. They even discuss a new restaurant in Grandview where Virginia now works, and marvel at her crazy life and sleep schedule. The episode takes an emotional turn when "Mike" calls in from Florida, mourning his friend who died in Cleveland. He talks about his husband, a lawyer who spends too much money. Bobby thinks he sounds hot, but Jim thinks he sounds sad.Jim goes off the rails, discussing bachelorette parties infiltrating obscure gay bars and how it's offensive, but also acknowledging the need for equality and safe spaces. This leads to a tailspin about his desire to move and feeling trapped in his current life. The show takes a humorous turn as they play a Twitter post from a local Columbus man who wants to be humiliated by other men. Jim hits the metaphorical eject button, insisting no straight guy will ever like him, and Bobby suggests he write poetry again to reconnect with himself. They wrap up with sundries, with Bobby talking about bad service at fast food drive-throughs and Jim discussing Gen Z dressing up like '90s kids. In the end, "Not Well" delivers a wild ride full of laughter, nostalgia, and a touch of introspection.Support the showAs always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at ‪(614) 721-5336‬ and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed. NOT WELL / GAY PODCAST / EPISODE 186 Remember last episode when we were going to go out and "get in trouble" - well we did and you won't believe what happened. On the episode of Not Well, we talk about idiot Republicans, Harry Potter,  gross YouTube podcasters, conservative people, fat alcohol syndrome, and being fat in general. Some Highlights (or lowlights) Marjorie Taylor Greene made a State of the Union stunt, carrying a white balloon in reference to Republican criticism of Joe Biden's handling of a Chinese surveillance balloon. However, the balloon saga ended when it was shot down off the Carolinas on Saturday. The phenomenon of "sick zoning" is when a partner takes care of their sick significant other, resulting in the partner being seen as weak and unappealing. This dynamic can create a caregiver and dependent relationship, where the partner who is not sick takes on a more nurturing role. The caregiver may become preoccupied with the sick partner's well-being and only see them as someone who needs help, rather than an equal partner. This can lead to a loss of attraction and desire, as well as a lack of emotional and physical intimacy in the relationship.Allie Beth Stuckey is a conservative commentator, author, and podcaster who aims to help young women think critically and biblically about the world around them. She is known for her book "You're Not Enough (& That's Okay): Escaping the Toxic Culture of Self-Love," which challenges society's popular cultural myths and offers truthful alternatives found in the Bible. Stuckey started her career in 2016 with a Facebook page called "The Conservative Millennial" and has since contributed to various media outlets, including Fox News and BlazeTV. She currently hosts the podcast "Relatable," where she analyzes culture, news, politics, and theology from a Christian, conservative perspective.Several thousand gay men set off on a week-long vacation cruise, organized by Atlantis Events on the Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas ship, through the Caribbean. The cruise promised guests a week of social mixers, late-night dance parties, and performances from entertainers like Todrick Hall and Billy Porter. The trip can be an annual pilgrimage for many gay men who want to unwind in a fun and sexually liberated setting with members of their community. On this episode of Not, Well, Bobby and Jim dive into the hot-button issue of police shootings and question whether it's more of a cop problem than a race problem. With the endless stream of incidents making headlines, the guys can't help but wonder who is becoming cops and what is causing this apparent surge in excessive force. With their signature wit and humor, Bobby and Jim will have you laughing and thinking at the same time, as they tackle this important and timely topic. So sit back, grab a glass of wine (or a can of Pringles), and join the hilarious and thought-provoking conversation on this latest episode of Not, Well.Additionally, Bobby and Jim delve into this hilarious yet concerning situation, questioning why this woman felt comfortable drinking wine from a Pringles can in the middle of a Walmart parking lot. They humorously ponder the idea of being banned from Walmart for drinking on the job. The guys also discuss the strange phenomenon of people drinking in public placesRecently, the news about the Chinese spy balloon that was shot down by a U.S. fighter jet off the coast of South Carolina had everyone talking. The comical take on the situation was no exception, as late-night comedians, such as Chelsea Handler and Seth Meyers, along with Jimmy Fallon and James Corden, all had a field day with the situation. Bobby and Jim also joined in on the fun, poking humor at the balloon incident. Not as funny as those late night comedians. Comedians and late-night talk show hosts have had a field day with the recent news of the Chinese spy balloon that was shot down by a US fighter jet off the coast of South Carolina. Chelsea Handler kicked off her week hosting "The Daily Show" with a series of jokes about the incident. She quipped about President Biden, saying "Obama got to order the assassination of bin Laden, and all he gets to do is murder a bag of helium." and "And, as you heard, this balloon was the size of three buses. I love measuring things in buses." Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, and James Corden also weighed in with their own witty comments about the balloon, with Meyers saying "The only way this balloon could have had a higher profile is if it had its own Instagram account." and Fallon jokingly saying "The balloon floated from Montana to South Carolina. Somehow it got across the country faster than someone flying Southwest." These comedians have certainly found a way to bring humor to a strange and unexpected situation. We also talk about Bobby having a nervous breakdown that actually ended up being therapeutic, even though his therapist thinks he should be at a psychiatrist sooner rather than later. Bobby is also talking about his spending habits lately. He can't pass up a deal but he has to start... Jim hates pleated pants and can't understand why people are wearing them again. Bobby then admits his secret fantasy about white underwear and business suits. Support the showAs always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at ‪(614) 721-5336‬ and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed. Dennis is joined via Zoom by cartoonist Eric Orner, who is best known for The Mostly Unfabulous Life of Ethan Green, to talk about his new graphic novel Smahtguy: The Life and Times of Barney Frank. Eric talks about meeting Congressman Frank when he was in his 20's, going to work for him in his congressional office and describes why, decades later, he wanted to turn Barney's life into a graphic novel. Eric also talks about getting Barney's blessing on the project, interviewing him over four months to get the full story, and the reaction Barney had after reading the finished book. He also discusses when he first knew he could draw, his use of hand-drawing mixed with computers and what comes first when he's creating, the words or the images. Other topics include: Barney Frank's role as Clinton's top defender in the early days of the Lewinsky scandal, Barney making a pivotal deal with singer James Brown back in the 1960's, Nancy Pelosi cutting a rug at Barney Frank's wedding and how Barney Frank is a horrible backseat driver but an excellent boss. https://us.macmillan.com/author/ericorner

While Leigh is working on putting together the next regular History is Gay episode for you, we've got a special treat in the form of a minisode, all about the new film BROS, making history as the first romantic comedy from a major film studio about two gay men and featuring an all LGBTQ+ principal cast! It's uproariously funny, filled with queer history tidbits, and we worked on it! History is Gay did some research consulting for the film back in 2021 as they were building out their set design of The LGBTQIA+ Museum, which serves as backdrop for some of the film, and Leigh got a chance to sit down with three of the cast members who play board members of the museum -- Dot-Marie Jones, Academy Award winner Jim Rash, and Eve Lindley-- to talk about their roles, their own queer history knowledge, and what it meant to them to be part of this project! BROS is out in theaters now as of September 30, 2022 -- go support the film, and keep your eyes peeled for a fun History is Gay easter egg in the film! Tweet us your thoughts!
