Let's practice 100+ words with long and short vowel sounds! A vowel is a sound we make with our mouth and vocal cords open, without touching our tongue to any other part of our mouth. In vowel sounds the air flows freely (differently from consonants, in which we block the air with our tongue, lips, or teeth). Vowels in English are represented by the letters A, E, I, O, and U. The letter Y is considered a “semivowel” because sometimes it represents a vowel sound, and sometimes it represents a consonant sound. English vowels can be divided into two types: long vowels and short vowels. The difference between them is in the duration of their pronunciation. Long vowels are pronounced with an extended sound, while short vowels have a quicker sound. Today I'd like you to consider this question: Is your English unbalanced? If something is unbalanced, it means it is not equal, it is not even. There is more in one part, and less in another part. What does it mean for your English to be unbalanced? Learning a language has many different aspects: Reading Writing Listening Speaking Grammar Vocabulary If you are strong in some areas, but weak in others, your English is unbalanced. Some students read a lot - even advanced texts - but they can't understand much when they listen. Some students have a large vocabulary... but they can't put the words they know into phrases. Some students are great at grammar, and can write very well... but have very bad pronunciation, and it's difficult to understand their accent. This is what it means for your English to be unbalanced. And in a moment, I'll give you some tips for solving this problem. But first, look at those six aspects of the English language and think about which area you are strongest in, and which area you are weakest in. In order to be fluent in English, you need to be good at ALL the aspects of the language, because they are all connected, and all of them are important for fluency. How can you balance these areas and improve them all? Here's one suggestion: You can dedicate one day of the week to working on each area. For example… Monday - Reading Tuesday - Writing Wednesday - Listening Thursday - Speaking Friday - Grammar Saturday - Vocabulary Sunday - (Relax!) This way, you can make progress in all the areas together, and your English level will improve as a whole. Now, in order to study all the aspects, you might have to visit many different websites... reading an article on a news site listening to a podcast on a different website taking a vocabulary quiz from a textbook, etc. But inside the Complete Program at Espresso English, you'll get everything you need in one place! Welcome to day 3 of our pronunciation power-up mini-course! Today we’re going to practice pronouncing the names of 50 countries in the world. Some of these might be similar to how they’re said in your native language, but others will NOT be the same, so pay close attention to any small pronunciation differences from what you might be used to. I really wish I could do ALL the countries in the world, but unfortunately we don’t have time in this short video – so I just took the top 50 countries by population size. Listen and repeat so you can practice saying these countries’ names in English. One of my favorite things about teaching at Espresso English is that I have students from all over the world. And I know you’re all working hard on your English! I wanted to clear up one question about my American English Pronunciation Course. Someone asked, “Will this course give me an American accent?” But the problem is, that’s the wrong question to ask. The reason it’s called the American English Pronunciation Course is that it’s from an American English perspective, because that’s what I speak. But don’t make the mistake of thinking you MUST sound EXACTLY like an American in order to be fluent in English. The truth is, there are many different accents of English, and this is one of the things that makes global English so beautiful – so your English is not “bad” just because you might have a foreign accent. Instead, the goal you should aim for is speaking English CLEARLY so that your pronunciation doesn’t cause any misunderstandings or miscommunication. You want other people to understand you easily when you talk. Do you see the difference? You don’t have to speak exactly like an American, but you do have to speak clearly and understandably – and that’s what my course will help you achieve. Remember, keep training your pronunciation! What’s the difference between homework and housework? These two words seem practically identical, but they actually have separate meanings and uses. Last week you learned 20 different ways to say "yes" in English, and today you’ll learn 20 different expressions for "no." These are especially important to learn because we often want to be polite when declining an invitation or request – it sounds a little rude to just say "no." Or maybe you want to add some additional information to the simple answer of "no" – a lot of today’s expressions include extra meaning. This is just a very small sample of the many ways we have to say "no" in English – there are many, many more!   As you can see, these different expressions all add slightly different meanings. A lot of them are commonly used in some situations, but don’t sound natural if used in another situation.   This is why it’s so important to learn words and phrases in context, so that you can use them the right way. Compound words are when two or more words are put together to form a new word with a new meaning - like notebook, mother-in-law, and post office. Sometimes compound words are easy to understand: a bookstore is a store that sells books; a dishwasher is a machine that washes dishes. But others might not be so obvious, for example: brainstorm – an intense process where you think of many different ideas scapegoat – someone who bears the blame for others In this lesson, you'll learn the meanings of 36 compound words in English. It's just a couple days away from Christmas, which is a major holiday in the United States. So in today's lesson I'm going to teach you about the difference between the words holiday and vacation. English learners often ask me about this, and it's a little tricky! Now put it into practice! What’s your favorite holiday? Describe it in English. What did you do on your last vacation? In this lesson we’re going to look at 7 common pronunciation mistakes in words with confusing combinations of letters.. A lot of students ask me about rules, like how do we know when the letter e sounds like ee vs. eh, or when the letter g sounds like juh (general) vs. guh (get). Although there are some trends in English spelling / pronunciation, there are so many complications and exceptions that I’d encourage you NOT to focus on remembering rules. Instead, when you learn new words, always look them up in an audio dictionary - listen to the pronunciation and repeat it. Don’t try to figure it out by analyzing the spelling. I know it’s frustrating! English is very irregular, so it’s best to just learn the correct pronunciation of each word and not try to interpret them based on a logical system.
