Tim Conley helps founders overcome mental hurdles and grow their businesses. Most entrepreneurs, he's observed, prefer daily operations and putting out fires. If there are no fires, entrepreneurs will sometimes set them to put them out. In this conversation, Conley explains why entrepreneurs must evolve from the daily nitty-gritty into long-term strategists. This requires delegation, new creative outlets, and a shift in roles. To read the edited and shortened transcript (with embedded audio), please see https://pec-ly.com/?6mt9For all edited transcripts, see https://www.practicalecommerce.com/tag/podcasts

Do you need high-quality roofing leads? The answer is Yes and also No... Leads are a way to get business but let's keep in mind the actual goal of lead generation- growing your company. The problem with buying from lead aggregators is that the leads have no idea who you are. And once those leads are in your hands, you not only have to sell a roof… You have to show them who your company is and why they should pay your price. This can be necessary as a new company that needs to get some money, any money, coming in... But if you're still buying leads as an established roofing business, you may actually be hurting the lifespan of your company. So what do you do instead? Joseph Hughes and Tim Conley team up today to discuss what the better solution is for growing your business. You'll hear topics such as: Growing your own leads Getting in front of the right people How to use Facebook to your advantage Interested in learning more about what we do at Contractor Dynamics? Tim Conley, Joe's business partner at Contractor Dynamics, joins the show to discuss the biggest mistake roofing companies make in online advertising and marketing. And that mistake is when you don't answer what's in it for your audience. It's all about “me”. To illustrate, you lose interest when you see an ad talking about who THEY are and what THEY do. The same goes for your audience as well. Whenever you are providing content, it should bring value to your prospects. It can be in the form of education or entertainment. What matters is that you ensure your audience gets something in return for giving you their time and attention. Interested in learning more about what we do at Contractor Dynamics? In any given market, there are about 3% of people ready to buy. There are another 7% who, under the right conditions, can be convinced to buy. Nearly every roofing company focuses on these people. They compete with each other to get a fraction of a percent of this 10 percent of the market. We call this hunting. That leaves 90% of the market who aren't ready to buy today or tomorrow. Maybe they won't buy for another 3 years, but they will buy. And this is where farming comes in. If you prepare the land, plant and water the seeds, and tend to the crops as they grow, you'll be able to harvest customers from the 90% for years to come. Here's the thing... every roof in your area will need to be repaired or replaced. Those empty lots you drive by... they'll have buildings eventually. The problem is you won't know when they'll be ready for harvest. Real estate agents figured this out decades ago. Every house will get sold, but they had no idea when. So they developed marketing systems to stay top-of-mind and tip-of-tongue. When someone was ready to buy or sell, they knew who they should call. If a friend was ready to buy or sell, they knew who to refer them to. You have to take the same approach. Listen to this episode with Joseph Hughes and Tim Conley to learn how to become a roof farmer.
Slapping you logo on something doesn't make it advertising. It isn't branding either. In today's episode, Tim Conley, "The Mad Marketer" and my business partner at Contractor Dynamics teaches what builds a roofing brand and what doesn't. You'll learn what it takes to achieve "Message To Market Match." Getting the right message to the right people in your market at the right time builds your brand. Tim also covers why he thinks marketing is more powerful than sales, how to get sales and marketing to work together, and... Why sales comes first in a business. Listen to this between job sites or between sales calls and get a masterclass in brand building.

And to help with this, I got my friend Tim Conley here. Tim, thanks for being here man. It's always amazing to be here. Great to have you on. So I've had Tim on for many videos. Tim is one of the foremost experts in the world of building, growing and specifically scaling digital agencies. He speaks on stages around the world and I'm grateful to have you here. If you haven't seen our other videos, there'll be in the comments below. They'll be all over, they'll be in the end screen. Watch all of this if you're building a digital agency because really so one of the fastest ways to generate cashflow online for someone who has some skills. Would you agree with that? Yes. And it's a longterm business model. This is something you can get started quick, but ultimately you can build a multimillion dollar business that has systems and you can literally build a business and not just a hustle. Right? Let's talk about money now versus building a longterm asset because these fall into different categories and I think we need to give the viewer a little framework so there's getting more sales and what's the difference between a short term and a long term sale and when do you need which types in the business? Okay, when you're first getting started, the only thing that matters is getting a customer. You've got to get money or you're not in business. That's easy definition. You're in business when people are paying you money. If you don't get money, you are playing it business. So that's the first thing. So the early stages is all about going out and getting a sale. Don't worry about your content marketing, don't worry about your brand, don't worry about anything other than making a sale. You're going to have a number of pitches and you're going to have a percentage of those that you close. The more pitches that you make, the better you get at the close, the more sales that you're going to get. But literally all day, every day, it needs to be focused on that pitch side. And then so it's almost like hunting in the beginning and then, you know, building a longterm asset. We want to build systems, we want to build potentially other, we'll talk about the things we want to build, but you want to be at more of a farmer. You want to start getting people showing up to you. And really I think that's, that's marketing, right? Versus sales versus say in the early days, all in on sales. Then as you start to get cashflow and you start to get your kind of legs beneath your sea legs on at that point you want to build marketing systems and we're going to start with sales and go into marketing. So number one on the five ways to get more customers is cold outreach. Now, Tim, are we talking like email stuff here? What do we mean by cold outreach? Currently cold outreach really falls under. What are you good at? Are you good on the phone? Well then you should do cold outreach on the phone. If you have a great a list that you can connect with through email, we'll then do email. But what I'm seeing is that it's getting really hard to get people on the phone. It's getting even harder to get people to actually respond to an email. So the one thing, and it's temporary, but it's working amazingly well right now, is reaching out to on LinkedIn who fit exactly the kind of business that you wish to work with as a business owner.

Now, in this video we did a deep dive video on how to start a digital marketing agency on a previous video you can watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKCQdp5sq38&list=PL0sOKzn__yK3IyPK2y7-Hxnh4VbIkBG4c This video goes deep into the differences between being a consultant and running a consultancy compared to running a marketing agency. He shares the power of leveraging a hybrid approach to minimize client churn and to maximize revenue. The importance of domain knowledge was covered yet again, which was the big idea from our first video link'd to above... If you are totally new to running an agency that is a must watch! We moved beyond those ideas to the importance of affinity which is what so many agency owners and new consultants ignore. Ignoring the ideas of affinity in your agency or consulting business can set your future self up for a lot of disappointment int he future, so you must be mindful of this key component. Tim Conley also commented on his take from the consulting gurus whoso big courses in the world of "start your own agency" such as the Sam Ovens or Tai Lopez SMMA courses... He explains the #1 pitfall from these courses that keep you broke and struggling to grow plus how you can avoid the consulting guru trap. In fact, he actually did a full video on the idea of "Should you follow a marketing agency or consulting guru?" here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=abDEoytqRLc Whether you take the advice from this video and our previous videos or you go through a consulting course like a social media marketing agency course there is one component that simply learning through study can never offer you. This is actually the key to everything and it cannot be taught through videos, PDFs, or audio files. Tim addresses the question "is the market to saturated with digital agencies?" because with the proliferation of gurus selling how to be a consultant and how to start an agency courses it does change the landscape... There is more noise now for a consultant starting agency than ever before. But this should not be a downer because this also creates more opportunity in a very specific area as a result of this additional noise. In pure fashion, Tim went all in on these answers giving brilliant advice that stems from over 20 years as a successful consultant. Tim has helped businesses scale from the 10K per month mark to millions of dollars per year in revenue so his opinion on what it takes to grow a successful marketing consulting business is worthy of consideration.

I can attest to the power of a marketing agency as a great online business to offer freedom. But there are many traps and pitfalls, from creating a horrible job for yourself... To staying in fulfillment mode too long. Tim Conley helps break down the steps that you need to take in order to grow a digital marketing agency from nothing... This is exactly what Tim has done for his clients, helping many grow large, multi-million dollar marketing agencies that have been sold, or have turned into cash cows for their owners. When I am asked "Miles, if you had to start over from scratch, and had no money to invest in a business, what would you do?" This digital marketing agency business model is always my answer. The Business Method Podcast: High-Performance & Entrepreneurship
“I've watched a lot of entrepreneurs create chaos in their own company, just so they can feel like they have something to do.” Tim Conley In this episode, we have a master entrepreneur and executive coach Tim Conley on our show. Tim turns entrepreneurs into CEO's of their company teaching his clients how to scale their business from 6 to 7 figures without sacrificing their freedom or sanity. In the late 1990's Tim started marketing consulting for companies to integrate offline and online campaigns. After 2 decades of experience, Tim has worked with over 400 founders, and started, sold and invested in multiple businesses. He knows what it is like to create a 7-figure business and the pressures of running a business at that level. Here is what I like about Tim, he is a no BS guy. His advice is clear and direct and he will tell you what your businesses needs and how to accomplish it in the least amount of time. In 2015, Tim came as an advisor to The Entrepreneur House in Chiang Mai. It was incredible watching this man when helping the attendees with feedback on their business. It was watching a master at work. “When we take on the mantle of entrepreneurship, we are saying to the world, “I'm ready to lead.” Tim Conley Creating Efficient Systems: 1. Must have sizable margins -Must have significantly more revenue than it costs you to provide the service or product. “A company that has great margins can survive all kinds of inefficiency.” Tim Conley 2. Marketing and Sales -Separate the two. Are you sales oriented or marketing oriented? -Usually, a company will be more marketing oriented or more sales oriented. -A sales-oriented company will plateau and they will eventually need to go do marketing or bring in someone that is good at marketing. “Entrepreneurship is that….you take and idea and turn it into reality. How much more art is there than that?” Tim Conley “No one is going to feel sorry for the guy that makes 7-figures….but surrounding ourselves with others that understand what we are going through, it helps us be better people.” Tim Conley Contact Info: Website: http://tim411.com http://leaderswithin.io/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TimConley The Forge Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheForgeGroup/

Tim Conley is a business coach, was the host of the Foolish Adventure podcast, and is a high-level consultant, helping B2B entrepreneurs, agencies and consultants (from $0.5 - 5M) scale their businesses. In the first half of this episode, we discuss the businesses Tim works with, which range from $500K - 5M, and what it takes for them to grow and level up. In the second part, we discuss Tim's business model, which is quite similar to my own business, Outbound Creative, doing high-level consulting and selling group training programs. Find out how to scale your own solo consulting practice, making upwards of $200-500K a year, while only working 9 months a year and having a whole bunch of freedom during those 9 months. It’s opening day in Kentucky and team members Josh Sturgill and Tim Conley are excited to make the trip to the Bluegrass State to get things started. The weather is hot but that doesn’t stop these guys from punching their first tags of the year. We’re also joining up with Todd as he pulls some all nighters in the Redneck blind in hopes of ambushing a bull elk in Oregon. Will the efforts pay off?
There’s no better way to beat the late summer heat than chasing antelope out west. We’re hopping in the blind with Troy Spolum as he sweats it out for a chance at a nice buck. With all the antelope slipping past him out of range he gambles by making a move of the blind to get closer to the action. The move pays off when a number of bucks slip past the blind and give Troy a shot. We also visit with Tim Conley, Dan Richardson, Kent Petty and Dalton Cook to check out the bucks the will be after this fall.

Todays guest is known as one of the top direct response marketing consultants in the startup and online entrepreneurship communities. He's famous for generating for his clients six and seven figure revenue breakthroughs, and doubling their time off, all while they live, work and play anywhere in the world. And isn't that we all want. The ability to blend work and vacations, so one becomes the other and vice versa. As a coach, advisor and mentor to over 400 founders (plus several hundred Foolish Adventure students), he has developed systems for helping entrepreneurs discover their strengths, build their authority and skyrocket their revenue. In 2004, he moved away from Portland, Oregon and finally broke free of in-person consulting, and since that time, Tim has made use of mobile technologies to allow him to live, work and play anywhere, too. Just recently he spent a month traveling around Bali while running his high-end mastermind (global), coached 3 entrepreneurs (2 in US, 1 in Australia) and finished up a consulting project for a client in China. Through his posts, podcasts and coaching, he will help us all do the same — gain the freedoms of Time, Income and Mobility by transforming your business. He has a passion for living, enjoying himself, inspiring others and saying goodbye to the self limiting thinking that traps so many of us. So how did he grasp the ultimate productity mind-set that works so amazingly well to achieve the big goals and the big life experiences too? And does he look at the world in general and think “Put on new glasses people…you just can't see what time you are wasting!” Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Mr Tim Conley

Dan and Ian are together again at the infamous Badladz Resort in Puerto Galera, Philippines. This week they are joined by special guest Tim Conley from Foolish Adventure who will be working with the first group of folks here for the TMBA Start-up Summer project. Stay tuned in the next couple weeks for updates about these guys, their projects, and our Start-up Summer. This week they got a question from Shayna at EspressoEnglish.net: I run a website that teaches English as a Second Language, and I feel like I’m competing with the zillions of pages all over the internet. I’m having trouble pricing my products for a global audience and trying to compete with all the free sites out there. The most important thing about competing with free products when you’ve got something quality to offer is that you will always be fighting downhill when you do that. No one wants to fight downhill…you usually fall. Instead fight uphill and you’ll find it much easier
