Miya explains how six elite Big 12 teams stack up nationally, why the league's top-heavy strength makes the regular season a grind, and how that battle-tested profile translates to postseason success. This week on Slappin' Glass, we're joined by data scientist and creator of the rapidly growing college basketball analytics platform EvanMiya.com, Evan Miyakawa. Evan's work has become a trusted resource for coaches at every level—particularly those looking to cut through the noise of early-season statistics and understand which metrics actually matter. In this conversation, Evan shares how coaches can separate interesting numbers from useful ones, why certain teams have unique statistical fingerprints that predict success, and how lineup data can be leveraged far more effectively than most programs currently use it. We also unpack defensive priority stats (threes, rim, free throws), halftime box score interpretation, and the origins of Evan's “kill shot” metric—his way of measuring and predicting momentum swings across a season.Whether you're analytics-comfortable or analytically curious, Evan offers a clear, practical roadmap for applying data without drowning in it. What You'll Learn1. How to Separate Useful Analytics from Interesting NoiseEvan explains why the highest-value decisions come from combining your coaching intuition with clean, adjusted data—not relying fully on either side. He details how to weigh early-season sample sizes, refine priors, and avoid overreacting to statistical outliers. 2. Identifying the 2–3 Metrics That Predict Your Team's SuccessTeams often win and lose in repeatable ways. Evan breaks down how programs can identify their own “keys to victory,” giving coaches clarity on what to prioritize in practice, scouting, and game planning. 3. Making Better Lineup Decisions (and Avoiding the Small-Sample Trap)Learn why 30 possessions can reveal a spark worth exploring, why 100+ possessions create real confidence, and how lineup data—properly adjusted for opponent strength—helps avoid misleading results. 4. How to Read a Halftime Box Score with Meaningful PurposeEvan shows which stat pairings matter most and how to judge whether a discrepancy is signaling a real problem or simply reflecting tempo and game context. 5. Prioritizing Defensive Outcomes: Threes, Rim, Free ThrowsA clear breakdown of how these three areas interact, and why understanding your opponent's tendencies can simplify what your defense should take away. 6. The “Kill Shot”: Understanding and Predicting Momentum RunsEvan's 10–0 run metric reveals why preventing opponent runs is more predictive of elite performance than generating them—and why the duration of a run often tells the real story.7. Coaching the Moments Around RunsFrom smart timeout usage to identifying schematic breakdowns, you'll learn how to stop a slide early or create momentum without burning resources unnecessarily. To join coaches and championship winning staffs from the NBA to High School from over 60 different countries taking advantage of an SG Plus membership, visit HERE!

Things Discussed: Hoops: We are still fascinated by Mick Cronin, even as he turns a top-25 road win into just another bottom-of-the-B1G team. Wolf back next year? Musselman clearly trying to talk NBA into existence, but NBA is listening. Big Ten MBB looks like a Michigan-Michigan State race with Purdue and Illinois on the 2nd tier, though Illinois can beat anybody—they're weird because they rely on the three. Brian: MSU is a better shooting team than they look: Akins is at least, and they hit free throws. Craig: MSU is really good, unbeatable when Izzo can browbeat the refs into letting them be handsy. Counter: they don't take many threes, with three primary players on the court non-shooters: using Jaxon Kohler as a shooter, using Jeremy Fears as a shooter, Xavier Booker as a shooter. Booker is a frustrating guy, more evidence that Izzo doesn't develop guys. It's also weird that Frankie Fidler hasn't been that good, and Calipari turned Johnnell Davis into a bench player. Shoutout to Dusty May, and what he's done with Nimari Burnett. Seth: he's not the 5-star Texas Tech thought they were getting; he's the guy Alabama thought they were getting. It's about anticipation; the game is coming to him so slowly. Brian: He's Bobby Hull! We eat crow for saying the two big lineup won't work—in our defense… https://twitter.com/EvanMiya/status/1879650374128447983 During break: Effort to bring Brandon Graham to Michigan; now he's going to keep playing. The guys do math. Speaking of Eat Crow: Wink Martindale NFL interest? Sam says they'll have to pay him; Seth says someone will because he's too good of an idea for an NFL team: NYG are 28th in DVOA and blitzy/1-high again with out him, meanwhile he's beating OSU with QQH. He's the guy who invented the most popular defense in the league, regardless if people want to claim Mac and Minter's defenses are "Fangio-style." But they're going to have to commit to him: he's not taking a pay cut. Michigan would have to put an extension in front of him as well.

Locked On UConn - Daily Podcast on University of Connecticut Huskies Football and Basketball
In today's episode, we dive deep into the intersection of metrics and narratives in college basketball, focusing on UConn's recent climb back into the AP Top 25 and their marquee matchup against Gonzaga at Madison Square Garden. We explore why metrics like EvanMiya's BPR and KenPom tell a more complete story of UConn's potential and how the AP poll reflects their resilience after a rocky start in Maui. We'll also dissect Gonzaga's metrics, why they're ranked No. 1 on EvanMiya.com, and what UConn needs to do to secure a statement win. This is about more than just rankings—it's about proving who's built for March. Segment 1: Metrics, Narratives, and the AP PollThe AP poll is often dismissed as irrelevant come March, but right now, it's a fair reflection of UConn's progress. Sitting at No. 18 after a gritty win over Texas and a victory over Baylor, UConn is proving they're more than their Maui struggles. The narrative, however, remains inconsistent, with pundits cherry-picking metrics to suit their biases. We dive into the Big East's standing as the fourth-ranked conference and why the Huskies' climb back is as much about grit as it is about numbers. Segment 2: Disrespect or Motivation? UConn as a 6-SeedBracketology whispers of UConn being a 6-seed are fueling the Huskies' fire. Despite a resume supported by KenPom and NET rankings, the media loves to downplay the Big East. We break down why the Big East is alive and well, outpacing a declining ACC, and why the Huskies are primed to outplay their doubters. This segment explores how this underdog treatment plays into UConn's identity and how they've thrived in these moments before. Segment 3: UConn vs. Gonzaga—The Analytics BreakdownThis matchup isn't just about rankings; it's a chess match of metrics and styles. Gonzaga boasts the top spot in EvanMiya's BPR rankings, led by Ryan Nembhard's elite offensive and defensive contributions. We break down what BPR is, why it matters, and how fans can use tools like EvanMiya and KenPom to analyze matchups. For UConn, Alex Karaban and Liam McNeeley are keys to the game, but can they slow down Gonzaga's interior dominance and force them into low-percentage threes? The Garden will be rocking, and this game is a chance for UConn to validate their resurgence—or give critics more fuel. Host Mark Zanetto calls out Bill Self and the Jayhawks for avoiding a challenging road game, contrasting their decision with UConn's consistent willingness to embrace tough non-conference matchups. Mark explores the broader double standard in college basketball narratives, questioning why UConn faces criticism for its scheduling decisions while programs like Kansas seem to escape scrutiny. This decision by Kansas not only sidesteps a marquee game but also raises questions about their willingness to risk a loss in one of the toughest home environments in college basketball. The discussion then shifts to UConn's experimentation with a double-big lineup in their must-win game against Baylor. With Alex Karaban out, Dan Hurley turned to Samson Johnson and Tarris Reed Jr., a pairing that proved pivotal in the 76-72 victory. Johnson and Reed combined for a strong defensive presence and timely offense, helping UConn outscore Baylor by 11 points during their shared minutes on the floor. However, Hurley made it clear this strategy was a temporary adjustment out of necessity and isn't likely to be a regular feature in UConn's rotations. Mark reflects on Hurley's comments, drawing parallels to past struggles when UConn lacked shooting and spacing. While the double-big lineup worked in this instance, the focus remains on returning to the versatility and speed that define Hurley's system. In the final segment, we break down advanced analytics from EvanMiya.com and discuss UConn's top player performances and lineups. Alex Karaban leads the team with a Bayesian Performance Rating (BPR) of 5.96, highlighting his impact on both ends of the floor. Liam McNeeley and Hassan Diarra also stand out, with McNeeley stepping up significantly in Karaban's absence. The analysis highlights the most effective lineup featuring Solomon Ball, Diarra, Johnson, Karaban, and McNeeley, which boasts an Adjusted Efficiency Margin of 53.7. Transitioning to UConn's KenPom ranking of 25th, we discuss the balance between their strong offensive efficiency and areas for defensive improvement. Mark emphasizes how these metrics provide a deeper understanding of UConn's potential as they navigate a challenging schedule and aim to solidify themselves as a national contender. This episode is packed with insights into UConn basketball's schedule controversies, strategic adjustments, and the metrics that reveal the team's strengths and weaknesses. From calling out Kansas to dissecting lineup data, this is one you don't want to miss. Ads Included in This Episode:Mint Mobile: Premium wireless for just $15/month.
