In a story from the gospel of John, The Pharisees and the scribes brought a woman before Jesus to try to test and set him up for failure. But nothing takes Jesus by surprise, and even in this situation he was not phased. He simply kneeled down, got on the woman's level, and wrote in the sand in the midst of all the tension. In this Sunday's message, Ps Luis Guerrero describes how this story reveals the heart of the accuser, the repentant, and the Father.

For the first four centuries of Christianity, the famous story of the "woman taken in adultery" was nowhere to be found in the New Testament.  In this moving tale, Jesus forgives a woman condemned  for committing adultery and admonishes her accusers: "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."But why wasn't the story included in the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament? Was it a late addition to the gospels? Or was it an ancient story suppressed by Church fathers? Was "death by stoning" really a punishment in 1st-century Judaea?  In this fascinating episode,  Helen and Dave speak with scholar Jennifer Knust about her book To Cast the First Stone: Transmission of a Gospel Story.  Join the Time Travelers Club!Support the podcast and get special perks like bonus content and the ability ask your questions on air. This is the fifth episode, uh, chapter two, part one, called The First Stone. This is where the Thief ( Symphony) starts asking around about the betrothal of Elinor Merchant and Lord Cagwen, which is this angle that she has to look into. I just recommend putting your headphones on, turn the volume up, um, and I don't know, remember that this is an actual play. The fun here is trying to acknowledge that there's something happening at the table, but really try to portray what's going on in our heads. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening." cw: some meanness, threats of violence, a graphic assassination. While there is some debate among translations whether this section of Scripture is original or not, it certainly fits with how Jesus treated people. The religious leaders have found a lady who committed adultery. Under Jewish law, the punishment for adultery was death. But it's obvious from the story that these religious leaders are more interested in tripping up Jesus than they are about honoring the law. In fact, they are willing to embarrass and humiliate another person in order to accomplish their goal. In a grand illustration of his wisdom, Jesus offers those who have never sinned the opportunity to cast the first stone. Interestingly, it's the older ones who walk away first. Jesus reassures the lady he is not there to condemn her and encourages her to make better choices in the future.Passage: John 8:1-11

On the long-awaited conclusion of our two-part series, Raggo Zulu Rebel Emeritus: The Eloquence of a Scribe, we discuss the following with Raggo Zulu Rebel: An in-depth analysis of Raggo's album Necromancy The importance of understanding political economy, specifically understanding the superstructure as it pertains to Africanity/Blackness in Western societies The comfort in the malaise and isolation people experience due to social media and how that relates to Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle A critical critique of hashtag movements. and, much more! In addition to and in conjunction with the dialogue with Raggo, we discuss how Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Ayi Kwei Armah's Two Thousand Seasons, and Anthony Sampson's Black & Gold Tycoons, Revolutionaries and Apartheid work elucidates the necessity of imperialism (via colonial domination) to foster divisions amongst the colonized population. The divisions created by the colonizer are merely the first tools of ideological and psychological domination of the colonized, for the goal of the colonizer is cultural hegemony. The apogee of this phenomena is apparent when the colonized internalize the colonizer's most potent ideological weapon…INDIVIUALISM!!! First, let's get this out of the way: Panic attacks are no fun, and dangerous behind the wheel. So, if anything we say to ANYone is particularly triggering in the moment, while we hope you don't have to turn the show off, we encourage you to do just that and make sure you're in a safe place to ride it out. Our general rule of thumb: It's only fun to laugh about it when you're not actively going through it. We get it, trust us, we get it. All that said, have you seen the world today? Yeah, it can be easy to feel the overwhelm of division and conflict. That's today's listener submission, and if ever there was one that we relate to, it's this one. Glass House? We'd like you to meet First Stone! This gives us the opportunity to introduce judgementalism, which it still a bit of a loose concept we're adapting to our own purposes. Think of it this way: if social anxiety is the fear of being judged by others, judgmentalism would be the fear of our inability to live without judging others. And in times such as these, when we're overwhelmed by the grief of division, it's sure easy to close the door and pretend those whose positions don't align with ours don't actually exist. But, if we don't find a way to engage, how do we find our way to understanding? Get down, and stay down: Anesthephobia and YouTommy just had a procedure and got to thinking about anesthesia. So, he dug into a bit of the history of anesthesia and learned some interesting things. Beyond some charming old timey language, it turns out people are far more fearful of going under than the data suggests they should be. But what fun is an anxiety if it's rational? No fun. No fun at all. As ever, thanks for hanging out with us this week on the show. We're getting closer to the end of our member season — just three more main season episodes left! If you haven't had a chance to visit [whatsthatsmell.net][site] and pledge your support, just know that we love you for listening, and also that this is in part how we pay for our shoes, so to speak, so every bit of support from listeners like you is a massive help in keeping things humming along. Thank you. This week's tune is Ain't Looking Back by Richard Farrell. It's already in the playlist in Apple Music and Spotify.
