On this episode of the Hungarian Heritage Podcast we will be discussing the Future Leaders exchange program or Flex which is run and funded by the US Department of State. It was created by former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley back in the early 1990's. Senator Bradley believed that the best way to ensure peace between the US and the countries of Eurasia, specifically during the time period after the fall of the iron curtain, would be to set up a merit based exchange program. Subsequently, this program would allow students from Eurasian countries to study in the United States while living with a host family, where they would gain leadership skills, participate in community service, and learn about American traditions and values while sharing the traditions of their home country with their host family in efforts to fostering peace in the world. The Flex program has continued to operate in the United States since the early 1990's and twenty two countries currently participate with this exchange program, but today we will specifically be talking about Flex Hungary. My guest in this episode is Eniko Garai, who leads the program in Hungary, and she has all of the details about how students in Hungary qualify and move through the Flex Hungary process. At the end of the episode, you might even be interested in becoming a host family for a Hungarian student in the near future. 2020 has been an anomalous year, not just for Americans but everyone across the world. However, it’s the current events in America that has the rest of the world watching closely. Despite travel restrictions placed on all Americans by The EU (European Union), our Str8up Crew travels to Europe to hear how some feel about certain disarrays going in the United States. We then talk to a former foreign exchange student who competed to come to America and left with a better perspective of different cultures who are often viewed negatively in international media. Would you ever sue a seller to compel them to accept an offer, simply so that you got paid your commission? This is just one question and situation out of many that we discuss this week with special guest Byron Lazine, co-host of the Real Word Podcast. The real estate industry is changing right under our feet, and countless Silicon Valley tech behemoths have taken aim at disrupting how our industry works. One of the reasons is that they see a broken system, with so much money to be made, and not all consumers being served with a great experience. The negative way that so many consumers view Realtors is a problem. So we discuss whether or not there's ever an acceptable scenario where a listing agent sues a seller to make them accept an offer, so the listing agent gets paid. Byron and I talk at length about Zillow's new Flex Program, and the announcement last week that Amazon has partnered up with real estate brokerage conglomerate Realogy. That's correct; Amazon has officially entered the real estate industry. The majority of the conversation revolves around the SOLUTION to all this. We talk specifically about what the average Realtor can and should be doing to insulate themself from whatever market share Zillow, Opendoor, and Amazon may take. Luckily for us, by doing certain things now, we can ensure that we thrive while most of our competitors eventually go out of business. Virtual schools—a fiercely debated topic. Some, like Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the American Legislative Exchange Council, are in favor. Others, including researchers like Columbia University professor Aaron Pallas, have pushed back. In fact, last January, Pallas called out DeVos for presenting misleading graduation rates quoted from K12 Inc. while presenting her case for virtual school expansion. But politicians and researchers aside, what do the students who attend virtual schools think? Are they pleased with their experiences, or wishing they could return to the brick-and-mortar, traditional schools where they started? This week, EdSurge sat down with Amanda Regan, a graduate of Virtual High School in Ontario, Canada, and Kiaha Raigoza, a product of California Virtual Academies and the Flex Program through the University of Wisconsin. Unlike the aforementioned researchers and politicians, both Regan and Raigoza experienced virtual schooling for themselves, and shared with us the pros, cons, and questions they still have around the roles that virtual schools can play in both K-12 and higher education.
