Howard Bass, Tina Chancey, and Susan Gaeta are the members of Trio Sefardi, a group they formed in 2010 to perform traditional songs of the Sephardim – the descendants of Jews exiled from Spain in 1492. They draw on their individual experience and expertise in many different genres of music, including jazz, folk, and early music, and they mine the rich song traditions of Sephardic communities from the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, and North Africa. Trio Sefardi has a special place in their hearts for the traditional and original songs they learned from their mentor, Bosnian-born singer/composer and 2002 National Heritage awardee Flory Jagoda. Suzanne spoke with Tina Chancey and Howard Bass about their work with Trio Sefardi, and why this music is so personally important to each of them.

When is making music about community survival? For Ladino singer Sarah Aroeste, her role is as much as a cultural preservationist. Although she was raised in suburban New Jersey, Sarah's family heritage goes back to the town of Monastir in Macedonia, where 98% of the Jewish population were killed during the Holocaust, and beyond that to the Iberian peninsula, where Jews were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition. Since establishing herself as a professional musician, Sarah has made it her mission to contribute to a thriving modern library of songs in Ladino, the unique language of the Jews in this region. During our conversation, Jack and Sarah discuss how she is creating opportunities for young people to connect to their Sephardic heritage through not just music, but also literacy and food; and Sarah explains why her work pushing back against cultural assimilation is particularly poignant during the festival of Hanukkah. For many, the holidays aren’t the holidays without music, from spiritual hymns to Santa tunes. Jim Borling talks about why music just feels right during this time of year. Plus: A music video by the all female a-cappela group Note-oriety went viral and amplified their efforts to challenge the social pressures that were crippling their classmates. Also: Singer and accordionist Flory Jagoda is known as “the keeper of the flame” of the once rich Sephardic Jewish song tradition. Flory sings songs she learned from her Nona–or grandmother–as a child in pre-WWII Sarajevo. Her accordion also helped her escape the holocaust as a young girl. And: John Brodie is working tirelessly with the VMI Regimental Band and Pipes for their performance in the Tournament of the Roses Parade through Pasadena. The big question is: Will the little band with bagpipes make the tricky 110-degree wheel turn? Later in the show: Poet Tim Siebles ethnomusicologist Ann Rasmussen conductor John Guthmiller and vocalist Lisa Edwards-Burrs share their favorite songs and why the music resonates with them this time of year.

More specifically, she invited them for conversation in Judeo-Spanish, also known as Ladino, the language spoken by Jews in medieval Spain and later in the far-flung lands to which they fled after the expulsion in 1492. Today, the language is all but forgotten, except by those like Jagoda who spoke it growing up. The group has grown to include more than 20 participants. At their monthly meetings—which...
