FOX's Eben Brown has this week's 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. Second Amendment advocates are a bit upset the U.S. Supreme Court didn't take up the case of a California man suing over a denial of a concealed carry permit. In Peruta v. California, the sheriff in San Diego says he can refuse to issue concealed carry permits if the applicant doesn't show a real need for one. Justices Thomas and Gorsuch published a dissent to the court's rejection, calling it 'distressing.' Meanwhile, in Kansas, it'll be legal to carry without a permit on college campus' starting this Saturday. You know PayPal, and Square, and Stripe? All three are used more and more by retailers to complete electronic payments. But the three outfits, which are not banks, are now the target of a class action lawsuit. Firearms retailer Blar Gladwin of California, who has his federal firearms license, say the three agencies deny him their services because he sells guns. Gladwin claims it's a civil rights violation. One gun group is fighting over-the-counter hearing aids. FOX's Eben Brown has more with 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. A bill in the U.S. Senate aims to reduce the cost of hearing aids, the kind your doctor would prescribe you for hearing loss. The proposed law would create class of hearing aids that could be sold at low cost and over the counter. But the measure is getting flak by groups like Gun Owners of America, who say the legislation could wind up regulating personal sound amplifiers used by hunters and sold at sporting goods stores. Dateline: Seattle, where city leaders are turning out their pockets now that a tax on gun sales, aimed at raising a half million in revenue while curbing firearms sales in the city, has so far brought in less than half the expected cash. People are just buying guns outside city limits avoiding the tax. Meanwhile, police in Seattle have seen a 70 percent jump in calls for service due to shots fired, and the number of shooting victims is up 30 percent. And those are your Bullet Points! Concealed carry permits are rising. FOX's Eben Brown has your 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. More and more of you are getting your concealed carry permits. A compilation of the number of applications by the Crime Prevention Research Center says the number of concealed weapons licenses in the United States now exceeds 15 million, almost 16 million. The center will have its yearly data ready this summer. But it shows what other record-keepers at places like the NRA have been saying: The number of women getting their concealed carry permits is far greater than the number of men. Big problem with concealed carry and personal information in Florida. The sunshine state has well over a million and a half permits issued, but hackers may have stolen the private data of about 16,000 people. The state's agriculturedepartment, which manages the permit program, says they'll offer free credit monitoring for about 500 people they know they're social security numbers may have been stolen. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
FOX's Eben Brown has your 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. New York Magazine is taking some flak for saying the NRA has found an ally in the terrorists of the Islamic state group. The magazine says their sources from ISIS, and previously al-Qaeda, had often joked about how easy it would be for one of their henchmen to get an AR-15 at a gun show in the much of the United States. The article was meant to highlight the NRA's stance on the supposed 'gun show loophole' regarding background checks. And it may come to pass that the U.S. Supreme Court will be the deciding factor in whether or not you have the right to keep and bear arms outside your home. The case is Peruta v California and has to do with the sheriff in San Diego not issuing permits to people who didn't provide a specific need to carry. Now that the high court has nine justices once again, there is belief the court will take up the case soon. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Use caution when liking things on Instagram. FOX's Eben Brown reports: I'm Eben Brown. Parents of an Ohio middle schooler are relieved their son is allowed back to school after being suspended for liking a picture of a gun on Instagram: (Bolin) "I didn't think I did anything wrong." Zachary Bolin's parent's didn't think so either. He wasn't even at school when he clicked the photo of which, by the way, was an airsoft pistol. But when he showed up for class the next morning, he was brought aside and patted down. School officials in Edgewood City called it a 'threat' especially because the picture's caption reads as 'ready.' We at Bullet Points would like to express condolences to the family of Bob Owens. He was the longtime editor of the 'Bearing Arms' website and giant in the world of Second Amendment advocacy. Owens was just 46-years old. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide. A note on social media posted by Owen's wife Christine reads, "You were a wonderful husband, loving father." I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
The NRA holds its annual meeting and Texas making it easier to carry in state. FOX's Eben Brown with details in this "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. The annual meeting of the National Rifle Association wrapped up after a weekend in Atlanta, and a visit from President Trump. And with a new NRA president. The board of directors picks Pete Brownwell to head the NRA. He's from Montezuma, Iowa and is part of the long-lived family firearms retailer Brownell's. Wayne Lapierre will continue as executive vice-president and legendary NASCAR owner Richard Childress is now first vice-president. Texas state lawmakers are looking to cut down the price of a carry permit. The very gun-friendly lone state has often been criticized for it's expensive permit fees, at a $140, one of the nation's highest. A new bill would bring the price down to $40 for both new licenses and renewals and would be free for peace officers. That would make it be one of the lowest cost permits in the USA. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
NRA's annual meetings have begun in Atlanta & you may want to be careful with a toy gun in Atlantic City, NJ. FOX's Eben Brown has your 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. Don't run around with toy guns in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Police in that town confiscated more than 60 toys from a store on the city's famed boardwalk, saying they looked too real, despite having those bright orange plastic tips. The officers said those tips are too easily removable and the toys could be mistaken for real guns. It's time for the NRA annual meeting. It' starts today in Atlanta. Are you going? (Man) "Just the camaraderie. A chance to see all the manufactures and the firearms." He's on a video from last year posted at the NRA's website. They're expecting 80,000 attendees. Hank Williams Jr. will perform Saturday night. President Trump addresses the NRA's political arm at a special event on Friday afternoon. His special advisor, Kellyanne Conway, addresses the NRA's women's leadership forum. And we'll be there, too! And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Tennessee is making a pitch to de-criminalize suppressors and Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill on confiscating firearms. FOX's Eben Brown has 'FOX Bullet Points': I'm Eben Brown. Tennessee's state legislature is moving toward the de-criminalizing of suppressors. A proposed law cleared the state Senate and could soon be passed in the state's House of Representatives. It's called the Tennessee 'Hearing Protection Act' and would remove suppressors from a list of banned fire arms in the state. Tennessee is one of nine states that currently ban suppressors, but a growing movement is convincing lawmakers the devices help preserve people's ears. Oregon's lawmakers are now considering a bill that would give the state more power to confiscate firearms, or prevent certain persons from obtaining them. State Senator Brian Boquist is a Republican, and the sponsor of the bill. His own son, a Navy veteran, used a gun to take his own life, sadly. Senator Boquist's proposed law would enable family members to obtain court orders for at-risk relatives to turn in their firearms. I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Another week and the Second Amendment continues to be a hot topic around the country. FOX's Eben Brown has your "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Lots of Second Amendment legislation is coming about in the past week. North Dakota gets a new law, taking effect in August, allowing so-called 'constitutional carry', meaning one can carry a concealed firearm with no permit or background check when purchasing. Georgia's senate approves a bill for campus carry on public universities. But it would not allow carrying firearms at sports events. Arkansas is considering making that provision for its campus carry allowances. Dateline: Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where the local historical society was proud as punch to tell you an anonymous lender financed the purchase of Doc Holiday's Derringer, the one supposedly at his side when he died in a hotel room in the tiny town west of Denver. They paid $84,000 for it. But now, experts doubt it's the real thing, saying the man who possessed it for decades was a known huckster. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! FOX's Eben Brown has your "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Connecticut could get a whole lot more gun friendly, if certain state legislators get their way. They've been discussing handgun concealed-carry permit reciprocity with states of similar standard for issuing permits. Currently Connecticut has no reciprocity, per se, but will issue permits to non-resident with permits in other states. The Norwich Bulletin newspaper reports Connecticut saw permit applications last year jump more than 70 percent. The NRA is hoping to discredit a claim by a gun control group about the effectiveness of suppressors in preventing hearing loss. The group 'Americans for Responsible Solutions' tweeted out that earplugs work better than supressors. The NRA highlights a CDC study saying suppressors are superior. The NRA and suppressor manufacturers claim the devices are safety tools and buyers shouldn't be subject to background checks, wait periods or special taxes. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News!
Another title for West Virginia! FOX's Eben Brown has "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. West Virginia takes their fifth consecutive title at the NCAA Air Rifle championship in Columbus, Ohio: (Announcer) "Babic has fired, made the difference, point nine. We are at the end. We have a new freshman Mountaineer national champion." Milica Babic, the freshman star is the big winner in Air Rifle: (Babic) "This comes just from hard work. So it feels nice, it definitely does." West Virginia bested season-long top ranked Texas Christian. When we talk Second Amendment we often mean firearms, but the New York state Attorney General says it doesn't cover stun guns. A.G. Eric Schniederman is facing a challenge to a state law banning stun guns and tasers, claiming it's not a Second Amendment issue and if the people of New York want the ban on stun guns lifted, they should get state legislators to do it. The NRA continues to stand by President Trump. FOX's Eben Brown has more with "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Last week's big convention for C-PAC featured one of the National Rifle Association's top executives taking a round to remind people it was the NRA itself that made the first big endorsement of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. Wayne Lapierre said it was Second Amendment-minded voters in key states that turned the tide: (Lapierre) "All across this country it was NRA members, and gun owners, who made a difference. In states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Florida. NRA members and gun owners helped put President Trump over the top." Lapierre promised the NRA would support the President again. And President Trump this week overturned a last-minute order made by President Obama aimed at preventing people who recieve social security due to mental disability from buying firearms. Both the NRA and the ACLU opposed that executive order. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
Surprising racing fans and commentators alike, longtime fan favorite Kurt Busch squeezes to the front of the pack at the last lap to win the 59th annual Daytona 500. It capped a dramatic race under NASCAR's new rules, creating segment periods, which pushed drivers to keep racing aggressively though the usually relaxed middle laps. FOX's Eben Brown has "FOX in the Fast Lane" from Daytona International Speedway in Florida: New rules, new racing and a new champ were made at the Great American Race this year. That new champ is former cup winner Kurt Busch: (FOX) "Kurt Bush has been the bridesmaid in the Daytona 500. Here they come off Turn 4 for the final time, from Las Vegas, the 2004 champion of the series, Kurt Busch!" Seen across the nation on FOX. Busch never lead the pack on Sunday until the final lap, where he bested Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Elliot, the pole sitter who kept ahead for nearly 20 laps prior. It's big for Busch: (Busch) "This place will challenge every emotion. And every day you wake up, when you're hear for speedweeks, you have a full tank of optimism." And just as much for owner Tony Stewart. "Smoke" never took a driver title at Daytona: (Stewart) "Well, if I knew all I had to do is retire to get it done, I would have retired a long time ago!" Next, it's on to Atlanta. With FOX in the Fast Lane at Daytona, I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. FOLLOW EBEN BROWN ON TWITTER: @FOXEBENBROWN
Another week and more talk about guns around the country. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. A federal appeals court is backtracking on Maryland's law banning semi-automatic rifles, including the AR-15. The law was passed in 2013. The fourth circuit court of appeals once voted to overturned it but after re-hearing, re-instated it. Two southern states might make changes to laws allowing one to carry firearms on college campuses. There's a proposal in Georgia to allow campus carry for people with permits. In Arkansas, lawmakers might make university faculty and employees undergo 16 hours of training, if they want to carry on campus. 26 states are now filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case against San Diego county, California. A local law limits carrying a weapon for self-defense outside one's home to people who get a special permit from the local sheriff. The brief was lead by Alabama, and argues that self-defense is self-defense inside and out. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
FOX's Eben Brown has your latest edition of "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. California officials have repealed their requirements of gun owners to provide photos of firearms, among other things, related to the state's expansion of rules regarding so-called 'assault weapons.' The state backtracked following promises of legal action by Second Amendment groups. Back East, in Connecticut, gun owners are crying foul over governor Daniel Malloy's plan to close a billion-and-a-half dollar gap in the state budget by tripling fees for permit applications and renewals: (Men) "We had the assault weapons ban a few years ago. Now, this. It's like I'm being taxed for one of the hobbies I enjoy." Some claim it's unfair to those with limited income who wish carry for self-defense. NCAA once again ranks Texas Christian University number one in air rifle. The entirely female team just beat the University of Texas El Paso and now boasts a season record of (12-0). And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
The NRA has put its stamp of approval on President Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. A controversial Kansas State law aimed at protecting people from federal prosecution on certain gun crimes is now ruled out-of-bounds. A federal court says a gun shop owner can't claim to be protected by the state for violating the National Firearms Act by building his own short-barreled rifles and suppressors. Next time you go deer or bear hunting in Pennsylvania, you can take a semi-automatic rifle with you! The state's game commission approved it this week. And President Trump's pick for the Supreme Court gets a big nod from the National Rifle Association. The nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch was barely announced when the NRA called Gorsuch an 'outstanding choice', citing rulings the judge has made in support of self-defense protected by the Second Amendment. Gorsuch also gets a thumbs up from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News!
The U.S. Army has a new contract with a different pistol provider. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. For the past 30-plus years, soldiers of the U.S. Army have kept the M9 Beretta at their side, but after a years-long search, the decision has been made to strap our men and women with a special variant of Sig Sauer's P320. Those in the know say the Sig was picked because it's a truly modular pistol. The contract's said to be worth more than a half-a-billion dollars. Big weekend coming up for College Air Rifle, at the Citadel, in South Carolina. They're hosting the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match. TCU, however, still ranked number one. Every time we Americans get a new President, changes come to government properties. Most famously, they redecorate some room in the White House, but they also get to change up the stuff online, like at WhiteHouse.gov, where a new page about supporting law enforcement also includes a promise to support the Second Amendment. Kansas is facing some pushback against steps toward looser gun legislation's and rules regarding President-elect Trump's inauguration. FOX's Eben Brown calls the shots with "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. This is the year Kansas is supposed to start allowing legally carried firearms at libraries, hospitals and college campuses. But now some state lawmakers are hoping to delay that indefinitely. It takes legislation for that to happen. Now that the new year and the new Congress is underway, both houses have introduced versions of a bill that would end the need to wait months and pay a $200 fee to buy a suppressor. Currently, suppressors are treated as weapons, but many firearms enthusiasts view them as devices designed to protect a shooter's ears from loud discharge. If the bill becomes law, you'd still need to pass the background check to buy one. Tomorrow Donald J. Trump becomes the 45th American President. If you're heading to D.C. to witness the inauguration, just a reminder: No guns, even if you have D.C. carry permit. And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. In this week's "Bullet Points", incoming Attorney General Jeff Sessions discusses the Second Amendment and a famous town in Arizona receives a new nickname. FOX's Eben Brown has more: I'm Eben Brown. President-elect Trump's first big endorsement was from the NRA and now his pick to head up the U.S. Justice Department, Alabama senator Jeff Sessions, had to talk about the Second Amendment during confirmation hearings: (Sessions) "Well, I do believe the Second Amendment is a personal right." Though as potentially the nation's chief prosecutor, he agrees with laws that make use of firearms during crimes, a crime itself: (Sessions) "I think that's a legitimate and responsible restraint on the Second Amendment." Dateline: Tombstone, Arizona! Home of the O.K. Corral: (Tombstone) "You so drunk, you can't hit nothing. In fact, you're probably seein' double. / I have two guns, one for each of ya." Y'all remember Val Kilmer in the movie? Well the current mayor of Tombstone just signed a proclamation, saying the fabled town, is to be referred to as 'America's Second Amendment city.' It goes along with their other motto, 'the town too tough to die.' And those are your Bullet Points! I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
Mixed reaction to concealed carry in Missouri and the NCAA's rifle rankings are out. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Welcome to 2017, where in Missouri you can now get a permit to carry a concealed weapon without needing to get any type of training or show some sort of competency certificate. Reactions are mixed in the show-me state. These folks spoke with FOX 4 in Kansas City: (People) "I do think you should have the right to conceal and carry. / It's gonna go back to the days of the old west. You look at me wrong, I can shoot you. / I think it's a good thing and bad thing. Someone who has never dealt with a gun shouldn't be able to carry it around." Missouri is the 11th state to pass laws not requiring training in order to get a concealed-carry permit. College rifle is back in season! The NCAA has published it's first poll of shooting teams for the new year. Texas Christian University is ranked number one. College rifle is co-ed, TCU has an all female roster. Reigning champs West Virginia, polled at number two. That's where Olympic gold medalist shooter Ginny Thrasher comes from. And those are your Bullet Points. I'm Eben Brown, FOX News! California has a spike in firearm sales. FOX's Eben Brown has that and more on "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Firearms retailers are having a great week in California, but it isn't a Christmas buying rush. The new state law comes into effect January 1, enacting a 10-day wait period, banning higher capacity magazines and semi-automatic rifles with 'bullet buttons', the quick magazine release and reload feature. People are trying to buy things up before they can't. Dateline: Aventura, Florida between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, with a skyline of skyrise condos. Uber driver Namique Anderson was on the job when a van pulled out in front him, and a guy jumps out. Police sergeant Chris Goranitis: (Goranitis) "He had two firearms in his hand. He pointed them at the Uber driver, and he made some demands to the driver, and threatened to shoot him if he didn't provide him with those demands." But Namique took out his own sidearm. Shot the attacker dead. No charges filed. Namique had a valid concealed carry permit and acted in self-defense. And those are your Bullet Points. I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Hear what one Virginia politician is doing as he runs for office. FOX's Eben Brown has your "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. If you're a politician, you're not allowed to buy votes, but apparently you're allowed to give voters guns! Corey Stewart is hoping to get the Republican nomination for governor in the commonwealth of Virginia and he's giving away an AR-15: (Stewart) "It's one of the more popular rifles sold in the United States. I also do want to bring attention to the need for constitutional carry in Virginia. We should have it." Stewart supports a move in Virginia to allow concealed carry with no license. Open carry in Virginia with no permit is allowed but that's for handguns, not long guns. Smith and Wesson will soon no longer be Smith and Wesson. The company's stockholders have voted to change the name of the parent company to American Outdoor brands corporation. But that's just the holding company. It'll say Smith and Wesson on the guns. In Florida, you'll now be able renew your concealed carry permits online. FOX's Eben Brown has your "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. About quarter million Florida concealed carry permits are due to expire in 2017. So instead of making everybody report to a state or county office to renew, or hiring extra staff for the paperwork. Florida agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam says it can now be done online: (Putnam) "Only in government is it novel to have commerce online when the rest of us are doing our holiday shopping on Amazon." Remember, Florida has seasonal residents, and some with Florida permits may be out of state. But for renewals, they don't need to see you in person anymore. Your prints are on file, anyway: (Putnam) "It's secure, and it's not compromising the background process that goes into determining whether someone is still eligible to have their license renewed." Florida has more than 1.6 million active concealed weapons licenses, the most of any state. And those are your "Bullet Points", I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
A celebrity is on board with the NRA's interstate concealed-carry idea. FOX's Eben Brown has your Turkey Day edition of "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. One of the NRA's big legislative goals for years now has been the interstate concealed-carry idea, where someone with a proper permit from one state could carry in the other 49, got a big show of support from one of the most recognized entertainers in the nation: Howard Stern! He's backing the idea, which is also championed by President-elect Donald Trump. Stern himself is a concealed-carry permit holder. Many states already recognize other state's permits though. You may be watching college football this holiday weekend, but just finishing the first half of their season is college competitive shooting. It's an NCAA sport. The sales of firearms has slowed down since President-elect Donald Trump won the election. FOX's Eben Brown presents "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. That big gun-buying frenzy appears to have leveled off since the election came to an end. Bryan Villella owns gun spot in Gainesville, Florida. (Villella) "Before the election, I think a lot of people were afraid Hillary possibly putting different gun laws into play." Donald Trump got a very early-on endorsement from the NRA and spent much of his campaign promising to appoint Supreme Court justices partial to existing Second Amendment interpretation. Dateline, Baltimore, where the city council votes 'yes' on disallowing toy guns. The ban would criminalize replicas of firearms that resemble working firearms too closely. The city council's president says not only are the faux firearms being used in assaults and robberies, but children are at risk of being mistaken for carrying the real thing. If the measure is fully approved, anyone carrying a replica firearm deemed too real-looking could be fined hundreds of dollars. And those are your Bullet Points. I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Another week and more things to report about involving guns. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "FOX Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. Looking to hunt some bear? New Jersey has plenty. A special season for black bear in the Garden State just ended with nearly 550 bears taken by sportsmen and sportswomen, and that's just using muzzleloaders and bow and arrow. New Jersey's Department of Environmental protection says they'll have a firearms-only mini-season in December. Black bear have been a nuisance in many Jersey towns and the state is hoping to better control the bear population. Dateline: Overland Park, Kansas. Next to Kansas City. 59-year-old Ricky Paul Smith grew quite agitated last week when he noticed a concealed weapon being carried by another person. A person legally carrying. It's Kansas, where carrying is legal to many extents. But Smith decided to grab the man's gun, stole it. Then shot the legal gun-owner in the leg. He'll recover from his wounds. But Smith's now in jail for aggravated assault. And those are your Bullet Points. I'm Eben Brown, FOX News. Follow Eben Brown on Twitter: @FOXEbenBrown
The National Rifle Association calls out gun control in wake of Kim Kardashian being robbed at gun point in Paris. FOX's Eben Brown has this week's "Bullet Points": I'm Eben Brown. The National Rifle Association's been the target of complaints following its tweets questioning the concept of gun control in the wake of Kim Kardashian's gunpoint robbery in a Paris hotel room. NRA's tweets about criminals not submitting to background checks in a nation like France, with some of the world's most strict gun ownership laws, were called 'classless' by some publications, like 'Mother Jones'. Other pro-Second Amendment pundits like Dana Loesch offered to teach Kim-K how to shoot back. We here at Bullet Points are just glad Kim wasn't physically hurt anymore that she was. September set a new record for the number of criminal background checks. The FBI says 1.99 million checks were done through the National Instant Criminal Background Check system last month...
