The subject of Mike's piece was Bob Owens. Bob was a gun-rights writer, but, more importantly, he was also a good friend of mine. Unfortunately, like many other Americans, Bob took his life several years ago. Mike agreed to come on the podcast to talk about Bob and gun suicide. It was honestly a difficult conversation to have. But I think we were able to be frank, and I believe it was constructive. Episode 50 Chief Doug Kowalski Special THANK YOU to the ATO family and friends as we release our landmark episode in, fittingly, our Big 5-0. The Assist the Officer Foundation is proud to release our 50th episode and capture a true piece of Dallas Police and Texas law enforcement history in this story. Doug Kowalski moved to Texas and joined the Dallas Police Department in 1977, where he advanced through the ranks of Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. Chief Kowalski tells the story of the growth of the Dallas PD Narcotics Unit that went from only eight detectives in 1977 to swelling to over 100 during the 1990's bloody drug wars in Dallas, Texas. Chief helped sculpt this unit and saw incredible Dallas PD history, good and bad, as he witnessed unit success, corruption, and tragedy. During his Dallas career he commanded the Dallas SWAT Unit and oversaw the enormous task of implementing the 911 system in Dallas, Texas. His boots on the ground approach as a SWAT leader was evident when he found himself surrounded by a hostile crowd during the Dallas Cowboys championship parade, fighting for his life in the heart of downtown Dallas. After leaving Dallas PD he traveled North and began a new career in Mckinney, Texas to lead their police department and witnessed the department grow to three times its size under his command in over a decade of being the Mckinney PD's Chief. Now Chief Kowalski commands the Prosper Police Department and , again, is leading a department that is seeing massive growth in both city and PD. For this landmark episode the ATO crew welcomed back LT. Bob Owens, a 40-year Dallas PD veteran, to sit with his old boss and give his perspective on this incredible career. It's a highly trained elite unit selected from rank and file officers who apply. They peacefully gathered in response to the police shootings of two black men, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. A few blocks from the site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, an African American man who had left the U.S. Army following disgraceful conduct got out of his SUV, ready for combat. The mass murderer arrived with a calculated plan to kill police officers, preferably white officers. Wearing tactical gear, a bullet-resistant vest, and armed with a high-powered assault rifle, he, in effect, executed five officers and wounded eleven others. A cell phone video by a witness in a nearby building recorded Johnson shooting an officer for the city's transit system, DART, in the back and then standing over the officer to pump eleven more rounds into him at point-blank range. The ambush marked the deadliest and bloodiest day for American law enforcement since 9/11. In a fierce gun battle, officers cornered the shooter inside the downtown campus building of the El Centro Community College. Chief Doug Kowalski of Prosper, Texas moved to Texas from the NYPD in 1977. He worked his way up the ranks to serve as a Deputy Chief of the Dallas Police Department. Kowalski later served as the Chief of Police of McKinney, Texas. It was there that he was instrumental in planning and designing a new Public Safety Headquarters. The building withstood a critical challenge when a lone gunman attacked the facility in 2010. He set his truck and trailer on fire. Then he proceeded to pump more than 163 rounds of .223 ammunition from his semi-automatic rifle into the headquarters. The gunman was killed but none of Kowalski's employees suffered an injury. Former ICE Special Agent Victor Avila shared the deadly story of how he and his partner, Jaime Zapata, were ambushed by the Los Zetas Crime Cartel in Mexico. It is a harrowing story of courage and survival in the face of betrayal by the officials who sent him on an ill prepared dangerous mission. Zapata was murdered in the line of duty and Avila suffered life threatening bullet wounds. Zapata explained how the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the murder convictions of Zapata's killers because it happened outside of the U.S. Avila is leading the charge to get Congress to change the law in hopes that the Cartel's willl be re-sentenced to life in prison. In Part 2 of our interview, the El Paso native discusses how the Mexican cartels are reaping millions of dollars for human smuggling. Avila says the reinstatement of a “catch and release” policy has triggered a crisis as thousands of migrants surge toward the U.S. border. The brutal violence by the cartels is spreading into the United States. The Los Zetas drug cartel ambushed two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on a dangerous stretch of highway in 2011. Special Agent Victor Avila was severely wounded. His partner, Jaime Zapata, was killed. In the aftermath of the tragedy, an investigation by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel confirmed Avila's allegations that ICE officials had failed to properly train and support the agents for such dangerous missions. The agents had been dispatched from Mexico City to Monterrey to pick up supplies. Warnings had been issued by the U.S. Embassy that the stretch of Highway 57 was a no man's land controlled by the Los Zetas. The Zetas had apparently been tipped off and unleashed a barrage of bullets into their armored vehicle which could not stop the withering fire. Avila, a native of El Paso has written a book about the incident titled Agent Under Fire - A Murder and a Manifesto. Victor Avila continues to seek justice for his partner's death. Jeff Etessam, a retired member of the Duncanville, Texas Police Department's SWAT Team, discusses the importance of training. Etessam spent ten years on midnight patrol. Then he became the training coordinator for twenty-two years. Duncanville SWAT, like most departments, was a part-time team. Patrol carried their gear with them and would come together as a team when called out. The sad fact is that most departments do not devote enough time and money to training. Etessam believes that the mindset of officers has changed from believing that law enforcement is a career to a job with a paycheck. He also weighs in with his concerns about policing in today's political climate and discusses the use of force. Rob Choisser- Choisser Automotive Services, Davidsonville, MD. Rob started in the industry as an oil change/apprentice under my step-father, Bob Owens, at a Honda dealer in 1989. He worked toward certification in every course HONDA would offer and ASE, achieving Platinum Level with Honda and ASE Master Auto Technician with L1 Advanced Engine Performance. Continuing on the training and certification path I became a Maryland Vehicle Safty Inspector, a Maryland Emissions Repair Technician, and a Maryland Licensed Locksmith. In 2002 he was recruited to open a new Honda dealership as the shop foreman, this experience was paramount in igniting his entrepreneurial spirit. In 2006 he launched Choisser Enterprises, Inc. DBA Choisser Import Auto Services, a mobile auto diagnostic service. He kept this business small and flexible so he could support and facilitate his two young son's activities. Fast forward, while running this small solo operation, he became an advanced level EMT-I (Nationally, Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate or Cardiac Rescue Technician in Maryland) and volunteered with the local fire department from 2008 until 2013 when he was offered a career position with the Anne Arundel County Fire department. He used this training and experience to relate to people when discussing their vehicle “health”. The modern automobile is more like a complex organism than one might think, each system is interdependent on the other's proper function. This decision to serve the public on a different level is when he hired his first 2 employees and in 2014 we started operating out of our current 3 bay facility in Davidsonville, MD. They have grown to 9 member team, including himself. Their goal is to keep vehicles on the road for at least 15 years or 300,000 miles and to keep our customers out of new/used vehicle debt. We accomplish this through consumer education, preventative maintenance and proactive repair processes. Key Talking Points Educate customers- relate to them and guide them where they should be. Transparent communication that offers comfort. Maintenance- eating well, exercising, not living a sedentary lifestyle for both humans and vehicles Vehicles should be viewed as infinite instead of finite “good for few years then turn in” “Car Pain”- everything that is painful that surrounds a vehicle (breaking down, AC/heat doesn't work, getting new vehicle etc) Pay attention to predictable car pain. Weak points in different makes and model vehicles- have your team understand and research and discuss openly. New customers- they are “breaking up” with their previous repair shop, ask them what their “car pains” are. Let them know your unique approach as a business- eliminate car pain and provide enduring confidence with vehicle (unless rusted out, been in flood, structural damage and less than 15 years old it is beneficial to keep it). What's in it for the customer- keep you on the road and provide a return on investment with their vehicle. Robert has 80% customer retention- based on old Honda maintenance practices. Uses Bolton for the pre-scheduling process. Hesitation with pre-scheduling appointments for customers- if they drop off their vehicle they lose their freedom. How do you overcome that? Consider loaner cars Stubbing your toe- you will limp and it affects your forward motion. Hitting pothole- activate ABS, stability, change shift points, throw the alignment off etc. When that goes unaddressed bigger issues will arise. SOAPE Note- Subjective (what you see), Objective (customer car pain), Assessment (inspection), Plan (what it will take to fix it), and Effect (this is what it means to customer and driveability of the vehicle going forward). Referrals- customers are the best marketing source. New customers that come in based on referrals and drop their keys are essential and their trust cannot be compromised. After a gunman killed five police officers and wounded eleven others during a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas in 2016, Maurine Dickey was upset that officers were not wearing armored vests. Ms. Dickey, a former Dallas County Commissioner, and North Texas community leader established The Dickey Foundation to provide support for local first responders. The nonprofit foundation receives support from Dickey's Barbecue Restaurants, the nation's largest barbeque chain. The foundation provides safety equipment to first responders with their “Invest In A Vest Program” and financial assistance to fire departments to purchase special washing machines to clean toxic substances off fire fighter's turnout coats. Artist Tommye Scanlin sat down with Peachy Keen at her loom in her Dahlonega, Georgia, studio to discuss teaching, learning, and tapestry on the eve of her second retirement from teaching. We got deep into the history of the University of North Georgia art department, where she taught for 28 years and was appointed Professor Emerita in 2002. Raised by a single mother, Scanlin attended college on scholarships and learned early on to balance her teaching career with her artistic practice. She described the role that her teacher, mentor, and then-colleague Bob Owens played in shaping her career, and she passed on some serious teaching wisdom centered on the desire to learn and the willingness to make mistakes.

Parents of an Ohio middle schooler are relieved their son is allowed back to school after being suspended for liking a picture of a gun on Instagram: (Bolin) "I didn't think I did anything wrong." Zachary Bolin's parent's didn't think so either. He wasn't even at school when he clicked the photo of which, by the way, was an airsoft pistol. But when he showed up for class the next morning, he was brought aside and patted down. School officials in Edgewood City called it a 'threat' especially because the picture's caption reads as 'ready.' We at Bullet Points would like to express condolences to the family of Bob Owens. He was the longtime editor of the 'Bearing Arms' website and giant in the world of Second Amendment advocacy. Owens was just 46-years old. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide.
