Today, Hunter is honored to speak with two people from the defense team of Nikolas Cruz, Casey Secor and Kate O'Shea, to discuss their role in securing a life sentence over the death penalty. Today's episode touches on an incredibly sensitive, complex topic about one of the most horrific crimes committed in recent memory. Throughout this episode, Kate and Casey draw on their years of expertise in fighting against the death penalty to explain how this incredible tragedy occurred. As is always the case in death penalty cases, Hunter, Kate, and Casey reveal the incredible advantages the prosecution is afforded, but despite these advantages, three jurors voted for life over death. In response, Florida has done everything in their power to make it easier for the state to execute people. Hopefully by the end of this incredible conversation, you will understand why Florida's response is one we should emphatically reject. Mass murder is the killing of numerous people at the same time, in the same place. There are significant differences between mass and serial killers and our focus today will be on the former, mass murderers. Mass murderers often die at the crime scene by suicide or police action. Rarely do they surrender but that's exactly what happened at Oxford High School when Ethan Crumbly opened fire. ======================================= Get 10% Off your TruthFinder subscription with code EVIL10 at checkout: https://truthfinder.pxf.io/c/3466408/1404760/15694

Last Friday, a thorough reenactment of the tragic 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was conducted in an unprecedented move. This initiative, which had stirred significant interest and discussion among the public and the media, had been organized as part of a civil lawsuit against the then-deputy Scot Peterson and his employing body, the Broward Sheriff's Office. The unfortunate incident in 2018 had seen 17 innocent lives lost and another 17 injured within a mere six minutes. AP News had informed that specialized ballistics experts, engaged by the families of the victims, led the reenactment. A key objective of that exercise was to meticulously record the sound of gunfire from various locations outside the school. This helped simulate the auditory environment Peterson was in, enabling a clearer understanding of what he might have heard during the terrifying ordeal. Previously, in June, a court verdict had found Scot Peterson not guilty of felony neglect, among other charges related to his perceived inaction during the tragedy. Notably, he had been the first law enforcement officer to be charged with child neglect in the capacity of a “caregiver.” Prosecutors had argued that his role as the school resource officer mandated him to safeguard the school's populace. Peterson's defense had centered around the claim that he could not distinctly hear or locate the source of the gunshots due to echoing sounds. He had mentioned that he had approached the building, weapon drawn, but then chose to withdraw. According to him, he had taken cover next to a nearby structure and remained engaged in radio communication for a significant duration of 40 minutes. Peterson had firmly stated that had he been certain of the shooter's location within the building, he would have taken immediate action. The families behind the civil suit had offered a stark contrast in perspective. They believed that Peterson was well aware of the shooter's whereabouts but chose to retreat, possibly out of fear, thereby neglecting his sworn duty. Tony Montalto, president of Stand with Parkland and a grieving father whose 14-year-old daughter Gina was a victim of the shooting, had stated, “While Peterson might have been cleared of criminal charges, it in no way absolves him of the responsibility to act rightfully.” Montalto had further stressed, “This reenactment aims to challenge and potentially debunk certain statements made during the criminal trial.” An important development had been the announcement by Circuit Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips on July 12. While she had permitted the attorneys from both sides to produce a video based on the reenactment, she had remained non-committal on its use during the trial. As of then, the trial date had remained undecided. The reenactment had promised to be precise. Experts were slated to fire up to 139 live rounds within a three-story classroom building, mirroring the shooter's actions using an identical AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle. To ensure complete safety during that exercise, all bullets were captured using a specialized safety apparatus. However, questions about the audio accuracy had been raised. Robert Maher, an expert from Montana State University, had mentioned to AP News that the reenactment might not capture the true essence of gunfire sounds. According to him, real-life gunfire sounds are piercingly sharp, something that speakers might not have been able to reproduce perfectly. Professor Tamara Lave from the University of Miami Law had offered an insightful observation: the deciding factor for Judge Phillips would be whether the reenactment provided a "fair and accurate" representation of what Peterson might have heard. The reenactment's announcement had generated mixed reactions. Parkland had informed its residents, with some expressing deep concern about potential trauma, as noted by Newsweek. Sarah Franco, director of Eagles' Haven, a community wellness center established post the shooting, had emphasized the importance of collective healing. They had offered various activities, such as yoga and tai chi, aimed at providing solace to those affected. Concluding the reenactment, Broward County Public Schools has announced its plan to dismantle the building, marking the end of a painful chapter in its history. According to Education Week's school shooting tracker, there have been 18 school shootings this year alone. With the increasing number of these violent incidents, what's being done to make schools safer?School Safety Today's host, Michelle Dawn Mooney, is joined by Max Schachter, the Founder of Safe Schools for Alex, to discuss his advocation for policy change to better safeguard students. Schachter's youngest son Alex was one of the 17 victims of the 2018 Parkland school shooting. Since then, Schachter channeled his pain to be a national school safety advocate. He discusses what his organization does to ensure school safety and what their goals are now and for the future. Listen to today's podcast to learn:• New policies at the state and federal levels focused on safer educational settings• How to use data to reduce violence in school communities• Recommendations for how district leaders and law enforcement officials can work best togetherSchachter was appointed to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission where they were tasked with investigating and analyzing information from the Parkland school shooting to develop recommendations to prioritize safety and security in schools. He highlights the successes in working with the Florida Department of Education to create data points that school districts and parents can use to make informed decisions and policies about school safety. The collaboration was the impetus for the School Safety Dashboard where districts, parents and all stakeholders can access this data on a user-friendly platform to help create a safer environment for all. Some other developments that have come from the commission include the creation of an Office of School Safety, a school safety specialist in every Florida district, an anonymous threat reporting system statewide, a panic app for teachers, a threat assessment team, and a mental health coordinator in all Florida school districts. Additionally, Schachter pushes for law enforcement to prioritize preparedness and training. “You can't start the process in the middle of a tragedy or after a tragedy. Now, law enforcement has access to cameras in an emergency. There are reunification plans in place and we now have mandatory active shooter drills on all campuses…and a minimum of at least one, armed officer on every campus throughout the entire state.”Max Scratcher is the Founder and Executive Director of Safe Schools for Alex. He's one of the nation's leading school safety advocates, serving as a corporate and governmental advisor on matters related to school shootings and security. Schachter works alongside members of Congress, leaders of federal agencies, and Presidents of the United States which has led to the creation of the Federal School Safety Clearinghouse at SchoolSafety.gov. He's interviewed with many media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, Fox, and ABC.

Alexa Kitaygorodsky sensed something was off as she entered her Spanish class at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day 2018. Minutes later, the sound of gunfire echoed down the halls, followed by screaming students and the harrowing voice of a 19-year-old gunman, demanding to be let inside the classroom where Alexa was hiding. Alexa barely survived a terrifying school shooting that day - but 17 of her classmates did not. Today, Alexa discusses the important work that the nonprofit initiative, Make Our Schools Safe, is doing to secure educational settings against potential violence. She also discusses the importance of getting involved in the civic process to support legislation that tightens school safety and security. Trigger warning. This episode is being released on the 4 year anniversary. It was a tragic and graphic event for the students, teachers, administration, first responders who witnessed the inital scene. Like trauma, the aftermath continues for years for those involved as well as the communities. If you feel like you're going to be triggered, wait until you're more emotionally ready to hear the episode. Today's guest, Dr Michele Finneran, Ph.D., is an Author, Psychotherapist, and Mental Health Advocate. Her expertise was called upon by some students from the Parkland shooting who were in needed of coping and dealing with this unforeseen trauma. Survivors of the shooting, teachers and students alike, have struggled with survivor's guilt and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Today's discussion is about the discoveries Dr. Finneran learned, while helping these victims navigate a new normal; the images, sounds, sights, and horror seen by innocent victims, children really. I'm sure like me, many of you watched these crazy events unfold on TV. Standing in disbelief at the images unfolding. Perhaps, double checking with your kids to make sure they were ok, no matter what state or city you were in or sending that “I love you” text as you were reminded how quickly life changes. 4 years ago today, February 14th 2018, a 19 year old walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. He opened fire, killing 17 people, and injuring 17 others. The gunman, a former student, fled the scene on foot by blending in with other students, and was arrested without incident about an hour later in nearby Coral Springs. The Parkland shooting, this killing spree, is the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. The gunman pleaded guilty and apologized. The perpetrators sentence will be determined this month. Let's talk about your experience with some of the Parkland school shooting survivors. It's hard to believe it was 4 years ago today. Dr. FinneranFor me, living right next to the community and being someone who is treating some members in the community, it really hit on a personal level, and it shook me on a professional level as a therapist. It shook me to the core. I had to take my own personal training and school myself on the traumatization of something like this happening. Seeing families and students which were impacted in the building, is something I can't even describe. I don't even know how to articulate it. It was something I've never seen before and nothing I've ever experienced before.JenWhat moment shook you to the core? Dr FinneranThe day it happened. I was in therapy with a parent of a student in Parkland the day it happened, February 14. I was sitting there having counseling with her and her phone was blowing up in the session. She was looking at her phone and I asked her if everything was, ok? She said, “I don't know. I don't think so. There is something happening with my child. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm going to have to leave the session.”I said, “Go! Take care of your child, your teen. Support the podcast message: https://www.patreon.com/INEEDBLUE
On the 4th anniversary of the Parkland School Shooting, we wanted to talk about public acts of violence and how they are shaping Gen Z and Generation Alpha. So, we invited Emma who is Anne's former Writing student and currently attending BGSU to listen to her experience and her perspective on the violence she has seen growing up. We tackle a lot of difficult topics that all center on acts of violence like school shootings, police shootings, violence against women, non-binary friends, and POC; and how all of these things are shaping Gen Z. Just like the "Duck and Cover" Generation, public acts of violence impact the decisions we make on a daily basis and our hopes for the future. Sit down and enjoy our firey chat with Emma, who shares so openly about the things facing her generation and the hope that we will be able to learn from previous generations' mistakes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/anne-rothhaas/message

In February of 2018, one of our nation's greatest tragedies struck. In just over six minutes, a gunman armed with an AR-15 entered the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, killed seventeen people and wounded seventeen more. Jaime Guttenberg was one of those killed. Since that day, her father Fred Guttenberg has been on a mission: to break the back of the gun lobby and reduce gun deaths in America. Along the way he's made national news by continually speaking truth to power. He's confronted Marco Rubio, Brett Kavanaugh, and the President* of the United States. He's changed the national conversation about gun violence, and he joins Alyssa Milano to talk gun violence prevention, finding community through tragedy, and his charity Orange Ribbons for Jaime. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

The blitz of media coverage for this week's 20th anniversary of the Columbine attack has once again put the perpetrators center stage. But school shooters and other would-be attackers have continued to be inspired by the pair who committed suicidal mass murder at their Colorado high school on April 20, 1999— a dynamic known as the “Columbine effect.“ Some have even taken pilgrimage-style trips from as far away as North Carolina and Washington state, to visit Columbine in suburban Denver before returning home to carry out their own shootings. On today's show, we ask: What has changed in the last two decades in the way the media covers mass shootings? And what has changed in our resolve to finally do something about this crisis? Host Jamilah King talks with Columbine survivor Craig Scott, and Dave Cullen, a reporter who rushed to the scene that day, about their recollections and ongoing struggles. We also talk to Mother Jones's own national affairs editor, Mark Follman, about investigating the growing problem of copycat shooters. Finally, Igor Volsky, founder and executive director of Guns Down America, shares reporting from his new book, “Guns Down: How To Defeat The NRA And Build A Safer Future With Fewer Guns,” which proposes a plan for defeating the ever-resolute National Rifle Association. Four interviews, reflecting four unique perspectives at this moment of remembrance and commemoration.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis fired Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel—who served as the 16th sheriff of that county—on January 11, 2019. Many would argue that his firing was long overdue. His agency was derided for failing to take control over a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport in 2017. Then, in 2018, deputies with the agency failed miserably in their response to the mass murder taking place at the Stoneman Douglas High School. In April 2018, the Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association opened a no-confidence vote—it tallied 534–94 against Israel. In this podcast segment, Jim and Doug discuss Israel's dismissal, and what it means for law enforcement leaders nationwide.

Gun violence in American creates trauma through school shootings, police killing of Black men, and gun homicides. This episode was made right after the Parkland School Shooting and legislative advocacy to address the issue. This conversation reflects the raw urgency. Dekywan Debose (Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University) presents a radio essay in which he reflects on an interview with Floridian teacher Miss Leon. In their conversation, they reflect on what goes through a teacher’s mind, arming teachers, school shooter motives, and parent’s role. Tags:

Six months ago, a group of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, changed the way America talks about guns. Before Parkland, it was relatively safe for many Democrats to oppose gun reform, but now they—and even some Republicans—are coming under intense scrutiny ahead of the midterm elections. To mark the anniversary, Mother Jones was given rare access to top student leaders, including David Hogg and Jaclyn Corin, at a critical moment in their movement—to discuss what they've learned, and what's next. In this episode, we travel to Newtown, Connecticut, as activists stage their final rally in a nationwide voter-recruitment drive. And we host an exclusive, intimate roundtable about the pressures of being held up as "superheroes" or "saviors."
Andy Cahan, former member of the hit band, The Turtles, was born in Brookyln, New York in 1947. In his formative years, Andy was introduced to the sounds of classical music and The Beatles, eventually leading him to hone his skills in piano, drums, guitar, and crafting songs. His first gig was with a surf band called the Jaguars, in 1964. This was primarily an instrumental band, with Andy taking up the Thomas organ. On this episode: mass shootings and the media. After the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, one idea for change has gained ground -- restricting children's access to violent popular entertainment such as video games and movies. "I'm hearing more and more people say the level of violence on video games is really shaping young people's thoughts," President Donald Trump said days after the tragedy. The idea is not new. For decades, politicians and others have pointed to the role violent imagery might play in shaping children's thoughts and in affecting their mental health. Students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have had other ideas. They want the focus on guns. "We need to pay attention to the fact that this isn't just a mental health issue. He wouldn't have hurt that many students with a knife," said Emma Gonzalez at a powerful rally. We take a look at how Parkland students have upended the usual mass shooting narrative. We also look at how the news media is debating whether its coverage of mass shootings has been too sanitized. Nicole Dahmen of the University of Oregon has studied that very issue and joins us in conversation. "We do have some evidence that suggests that images can hit us in the gut," Dahmen said. The question, she said, is how to balance the public's interest in knowing about the horrors of mass shootings with the media's responsibilities to not exploit the tragedy.

When this breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.” Psalm 146 cautions us to be careful in whom we place our trust. We place our trust in government, in schools, in police, to keep our kids safe. In every way imaginable, they fail us. Commentary: Ash Wednesday Few in the media noticed or commented on the fact that the Parkland shooting took place on Ash Wednesday. A day when we are reminded of our mortality. We are but dust, and to dust we shall return. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill drove to Houston for his first sanctioned USPSA match and was disqualified after three stages. He shares the lessons he learned about how to avoid doing it yourself. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense A Travis County, Texas road rage incident serves as the basis for today's self-defense tip. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia shares a personal friend's horrifying Good Samaritan story gone wrong and asks “what would you do?” Clinging to God and Guns Pastor Bennett answers some listener emails about specific Bible verses and how they relate the the gun-rights debate. Prayer of the Week O God, our heavenly Father, seeing that of ourselves we have no strength, keep us both outwardly and inwardly that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Our Closing Theme A rockin' rendition of A Mighty Fortress is Our God, performed just for Armed Lutheran Radio by Kenny Gates.

In this week's episode, John and Adam tackle the Parkland School Shooting conspiracies, the disinformation, and outright bullshit surrounding this tragic event. Shouts of "False Flag" and "Crisis Actor" are all too common these days and, far more often than not, without merit. We'll dissect these claims and, hopefully, contribute a little critical thinking to the conversation. In the second half, John breaks down the recent Mueller indictments of the 13 so-called "Russian Trolls" who apparently had so much influence they were able to swing an entire election. This whole thing is starting to turn into a bad Hollywood comedy. And finally, Adam provides a brief explanation for all the recent Black Panther hype. Hint: Marketing.

The Parkland School Shooting is another vivid reminder of the sickness that pervades our society. When children murder other children, we need as a nation to slow down and ask “what’s happening”? What’s going on? What are the conditions in our families, cities, and society that are leading to this kind of outcome? We then need to listen. Questions and statements like these ultimately lead to different solutions. For the Christian, however, we need to withdraw from the debates just long enough to remember one thing. We live on planet death. So how do we navigate this planet? On today’s show, I offer my candid response to the Parkland School shooting, challenging Grace Nation to think deeply about the issues at stake. Our country is grieving the Parkland school shooting, which resulted in 17 deaths and 15 injuries. We are, again, embroiled in a debate about what measures could be taken to stop such a tragic incident from repeating. Do we need stricter gun control laws? Is mental illness to blame? Or is it the FBI's failure to investigate tips about would-be shooters? Professor Ben thoroughly explores these topics, and more, in this Podcast.
