I'm your host, Allen Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we're pleased to welcome Frank Martinez, Talent Acquisition Specialist and Veterans Ambassador for Pearce Renewables. Frank brings a unique perspective to our discussion combining 32 years of distinguished U. S. Army service with 13 years at Pearce Services. In his current role, Frank leads Pearce Renewables Efforts to recruit and train veterans for the renewable energy industry. This initiative draws on Frank's extensive military background and his deep understanding of the renewable sector. During his military career, which included both active and reserve service, Frank trained over 40, 000 service members. Today, Frank will share insights into Pearce Renewable's veteran recruitment and training programs. He'll discuss how the company is creating pathways for veterans into renewables and explore the valuable skills. Veterans bring to the sector and Joel and I are looking forward to hearing about these initiatives in veteran recruitment and training for the renewable energy industry. Frank, welcome to Uptime. Frank Martinez: Good to be here, Allen. Thank you. And Joel for having me on the show today. Allen Hall: So Frank, you have an extensive career in the military. My gosh. And I want to touch upon that just briefly because you don't run across people every day that have served over 30 years in the military. That's right. And you want to just give everybody some insight into what you did with the U. S. Army? Frank Martinez: Oh, absolutely. Yeah, you're right. I usually don't meet too many people that have 20 plus years, let alone 30 plus years. So that said, I know that it is pretty unique. I will tell you that, I love being part of the Army because I really cared about the mission. And what was the mission over the last 20 years? As you remember, we were at war. I had a really vested interest in helping those that were preparing to go to war be part of that solution. And so I did that for the last 18 years of my career. I was an instructor trainer for units Army, Air Force, and Navy that were going overseas to deploy Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, all types of contingent operations worldwide. So I was part of that and like you said there in the intro 40, 000 service members that I stood in front of and taught a subject to. And I'm very proud of that. So I was part of that solution that the army needed to get people ready to go to war. That is incredible. I think it's incredible as well. Just the opportunity to do that. When I was in it I was 100 percent dedicated to that mission and how serious it was. Because we're talking about people's lives, we're talking about America's sons and daughters at this point. It really I knew at the time when I was doing it that it was much bigger than myself. And so just to be part of that I wanted to ride that as long as I could,...

We interrupt our regular programming, for a special update to one of our earlier episodes. I received a bunch of back-to-back phone calls, and this is one of the voicemails that was left for me. (Translated from Spanish) So, as I was telling you. Ok, I burned your hands over the flame. But you were going out with the kids from the street and stealing from the stores. To steal twinkies when I used to give you the money to buy them. Huh? Ok. I used to hit you, I never said I didn't hit you. Oh, it hurt you so much? They used to hit me as well. And it used to hurt me too. From my mom, but I never hated my mom. And I never wished the worst for my mother because SHE WAS MY MOM. I never told her, I'm going to fuck you up like you told me you were going to do one day to me. As you can tell from the tone of her voice, she is not happy at all. For those of you who don't speak Spanish, I will translate to the best of my abilities and breakdown all of her grievances. Her claim is, that there are inaccuracies in the stories I told about her. The Tubes with Prairie Prince in conversation with David Eastaugh The Tubes formed in 1972 in San Francisco, California, featuring members from two Phoenix, Arizona, bands who had relocated to San Francisco in 1969. One, The Beans, included Bill Spooner, Rick Anderson, Vince Welnick, Frank Martinez, Scott Hornbeck and Bob Macintosh. The other, the Red White and Blues Band, featured Prairie Prince, Roger Steen, and David Killingsworth. After performing at Expo '70 in Japan, Killingsworth left the Red, White and Blues Band, leaving Steen and Prince to audition new bass players, albeit unsuccessfully. Before moving to San Francisco the Beans had been a local favorite in Phoenix, selling out shows with a tongue-in-cheek concept rock show called "The Mother of Ascension" featuring costumes and props. After moving, Bill Spooner worked at the Fillmore West sweeping floors in between Beans shows at the Longshoremen's Hall and other minor venues. The band's loud, heavy jamming style didn't attract attention, and the band needed to go back home to Phoenix. There they would sell out shows, which provided enough money to pay their rent. The Beans' manager and former Alice Cooper Group drummer, John Speer, suggested they add Prince and Steen along with their roadie John Waybill to one of these shows. Waybill's nickname among the band was "Fee," short for "Fiji," thanks to his copious head of hippie hair.
Susan Green, Regional Director and Higher Education Specialist, Cyberbit and Frank Martinez, Security Analyst & Cyber Range Trainer, Miami Dade College, joined Sharon Rosenman, VP Marketing, Cyberbit, to discuss the evolving needs of cybersecurity, the deficit of qualified professionals in this particular job market, and building the academic cyber degree of the future. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, Cybersecurity is a growing job field with an estimated 3.5 million global unfilled security jobs by 2021. Martinez mentioned there were presently 13,000 open cybersecurity positions in Florida. The issue at hand: Current Cybersecurity Education and Training is not addressing the demands of real-world cybersecurity needs. Green began her presentation by introducing the building blocks of an effective cybersecurity education program. She provided an example of what a Cybersecurity Master's Program encompassed. After Green's presentation, Martinez provided an overview of the evolution of Miami Dade College, and why they opened the most advanced Cybersecurity Range in Florida: The Cybersecurity Center of the Americas. The program's goals are to produce graduates with the skillset to perform more effectively and become cybersecurity leaders and produce graduates with immediate value to employers. Martinez broke down the 4-year degree program curriculum with Cyber Range as the centerpiece. The webinar concluded with a brief Q&A session with questions directed at Martinez. Happy Monday, everyone! It’s another brewery week this week, and Ryan & Alex had the joy of sitting down with brewer, Frank Martinez, over at the San Fernando Brewing Company. San Fernando Brewing Co. is the work of Ryan Rogers and Vic & Joe Chouchanian. Opened back in 2015, each beer bears a Valley-inspired name, and our favorite local connection in the lineup lies in the Sonora Wheat, which is named for the type of grain used in the beer that once grew on the very land where the brewery now stands. It’s only appropriate that Sonora Wheat be the very beer we highlight this week! This wheat ale contains a spicy wheat flavor with a touch of melon. This week on FDB - learn of a not-so-secret pajama party, discover the perks of living in Nova Scotia, learn some beer slang, finally uncover why everyone in beer has a beard, and more! This audio was compiled from the interviews we did with Frank Martinez. We assembled this to use in a class because of how profound Frank's words are. We are putting it out here for that very reason as well.
Frank Martinez is a to-the-core backstep firefighter. He has spent a large part of the last fifteen years on one of the southeast's busiest technical rescue teams. And as Frank says, he's been slayin' it. For this episode of our podcast we talk to Frank about what he feels is most important about being a tailboard firefighter and whether spending a career perfecting your craft on the tailboard (and not promoting) is an acceptable goal. Our jumping off point for our discussion with Frank is "What do new firefighters owe the fire service?" As is our normal mode of operation, the conversation flows wherever it wants to go after that. We talk about: Why We Hesitate to call MAYDAY The Benefits of an Informal Critique The Best Advice Frank Ever Got Proving Yourself and Being Worthy Being Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself Frank answers our Pivot questions and gives us, what we now consider to be, our favorite war story so far in the short history of this podcast: The No Mas Cantina Fire.
When we here at Combustible asked Frank Martinez why he didn't discuss his cancer during the last podcast episode, he answered in a very Frank manner, "Because you didn't ask!" Fair enough. With newly published figures on firefighter cancer putting our risk of developing cancer at 68%, we really wanted to talk with Frank about his diagnosis, his outlook, his work on HB 216, and his advice for all of the rest of us. This podcast is a special edition. Special because it doesn't follow our normal format, and special because Frank opens up to us about what is understandably a very personal issue for him and his family. Admittedly, cancer is a subject most of us would rather not talk about, or for that matter even listen to others talk about. But do yourself a favor and listen to Frank. During the episode, it is suggested that we start to encourage each other to get tested, screened, and checked for cancer. We should all be the example for those around us. And when you do get checked, encourage others by posting to social media with the tag: #BecauseOfFrank. Do it for you and your family. And do it #BecauseOfFrank.
