Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values

“I do not believe,” wrote F. A. Hayek in his book The Fatal Conceit, “that the widely held conception of ‘social justice' either describes a possible state of affairs or is even meaningful.”  Hayek would complain “social” was a sort of “weasel word” that carried a lot of unexamined prescriptions.  To call something “social justice” is to advocate for something without bothering to fully explore what that something might even be.   What are the philosophical underpinnings of social justice?  What does it practically mean, and how could it practically apply.  And what ought we to do when the goals of “social justice” conflict with actual justice?   Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is joined by Ryan Rogers who shares his story of experiencing the social justice movement in graduate school and his efforts to fully understand it origins, merits, and faults.   About Ryan Rogers Ryan Rogers is a graduate student in clinical mental health counseling. He has a bachelors degree in psychology and a work history in addiction treatment.  His latest book, The Woke Mind, will be available in early 2025.  It is the sixth book in his series on social justice fanaticism.

Even if you've been following my work for a while, you're not going to believe how bad the state of affairs has gotten when it comes to postgraduate education in counseling psychology — until you hear from today's guest. Ryan Rogers, a student currently pursuing a masters degree in the hopes of becoming a therapist, joins me to discuss the troubling trends he's observed in mental health education. Ryan shares his personal journey, including his background in addiction and the motivation behind his pursuit of a counseling career. We delve into the alarming shift in graduate programs, where political activism often takes precedence over the core principles of therapy.Ryan highlights his experiences in classes that prioritize critical theory over practical skills, leaving students ill-equipped to address the real needs of their clients. We explore the implications of this shift, particularly in relation to suicide prevention, addiction treatment, and the importance of cultural competency. Ryan raises critical questions about the role of therapists: should they be activists for so-called social justice, or should they focus on helping individuals navigate their personal struggles?Throughout our conversation, we examine the consequences of substituting genuine therapeutic training with ideological indoctrination. As we unpack these issues, we aim to shed light on the future of counseling psychology and the urgent need for a return to a client-centered approach that prioritizes healing over activism.Ryan Rogers is a graduate student in clinical mental health counseling. What a fun episode today as I got the opportunity to sit down and chop it up with 3-young college interns from Fitness Quest 10 and their Director (Ryan Rogers). It was awesome to have an open conversation on all things on their mind and how I can help them on their journey in health, fitness, & coaching. They asked some very thought-provoking questions that lead to deep reflections and deep answers. Here are the questions that the 3 interns (Larry Hando, Max Jackson, and Ian Castillo) asked Ryan Rogers and I on today's IMPACT SHOW podcast: 1. "What was the moment that you knew you wanted to go into fitness & motivational speaking and what has made you stay on this path?" 2. "How do you find the balance between personal life and your passion for fitness and helping people?" 3. “How do you keep your mind right through the pain & struggle you have had to endure?" 4. “When you're in your dark times, or you fail, or you feel guilty about something, how do you process that and get through it?” 5. "How do you keep your ego in check when working with both high-level athletes and everyday clients? How do you stay humble and treat everyone equally?" 6. "What's the most fulfilling part of your work and how do you stay motivated after years of coaching?" 7. “What advice do you have for young coaches or trainers just starting out in the industry?" 8. “In 24-years of Fitness Quest 10, what were your fondest memories and most special experiences, accolades, or events?” Man, did I love this conversation. Some of the macro-themes centered around topics such as… The power of SHOWING-UP. The concept of “Be Humble…Be Hungry” and how that relates these days. The importance of building relationships and the right network, as this lends to your community that you are part of. How to deal with physical pain, loss, failure, and challenge…and how they ultimately can serve as catalysts for growth also. Building a career with Purpose and the elements it requires to do so over years and decades. The Beauty of the Beginning, when there were no frills and just hard work, dedication, and a driving vision to help people. Wisdom & advice for New Coaches & Trainers. MAN!! This was such a fun episode and it was so great getting to connect with these young interns who are eager to learn and grow in the fitness industry. Their questions reminded of the power of consistency, the importance of showing up, and the incredible impact coaching can have on someone. While the road to success can often be tough, filled with challenges and even pain, it's in those very moments that we experience the most growth. Keep growing…and keep going! Thanks for listening. This week in the studio a US Marine that gave 11 years of his life to the Corps. During his years of service he served on 5 deployments with 1 trip to Iraq and 1 trip to Afghanistan. Although he has been an Infantryman, All Marine Boxer, and Combat Instructor at the School of Infantry, during this conversation tonight we are going to focus on his time as a Squad Leader in the Battle of Marjah, the injuries both physical and psychological that he received, and what it takes to dedicate your life to veterans and transitioning troops to make sure that they land on both feet upright upon their entry back into civilian life, where far to often we hear that these Marines and soldiers lose focus, passion, and a mission to live their life by. My guest this week will tell you how after reading Marcus Lutrell's book he turned his daily notes into this fantastic 1st hand account of his time with the Lions of Marjah both good and bad. It is my pleasure to introduce former United States Marine and host of the Choices not Chances Podcast…Ryan Rogers.

You're going to love the energy & depth in this one.     This year's group of interns, including our first business/marketing intern, put some real thought behind what they wanted to know, connected their questions to their personal academic focus, and where they see themselves after graduation. Our discussion topics include:   - How much emphasis should trainers put on their social media presence? - Can one attain financial stability in the fitness industry? - Expanding your brand and reach to include personal development and business coaching. - The role technology will be playing in personal training. - Persevering through difficult times & burnout - personally & professionally. - Where I see the fitness industry moving in the next 5, 10, and 15 years... - How to Balance the demands of work & personal life… - How to stay positive and motivated on a daily basis…   Man-O-Man - I have to say, I was surprised how deep my conversation went with them. Without Rhyme Nor Reason Comedy Tour Kicks Off in Support of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Among Young Women Led by Stephanie Foster, the Tour's Lineup of Female Comedians Will Perform at Sorority Houses Across the Country   Comedian and mental health advocate Stephanie Foster 's comedy tour boasts an all-female lineup includes Xazmin Garza, Courtney Bee, Brittany Schmitt, Dicey, Jalisa Robinson, Ryan Rogers, and Nicole Tran – comedians with diverse viewpoints who are all coming together around the critical issue of supporting mental health and suicide prevention among young women. The tour will stop exclusively at sorority houses across the country.   Compelled to make a difference after losing a close friend and sorority sister to mental health challenges, Foster has created a program that will address critical mental health issues with a mix of humor and informative dialogue.   "This tour is in honor of my incredible friend and aims to address mental health issues head-on," said Foster. "As someone who has struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, I believe that when we make extremely tough topics and challenges more approachable, there is a much greater likelihood of connecting individuals and encouraging them to reach out for support when needed. I'm so grateful for the talented women that are a part of this tour and am hopeful that we can help start a much-needed conversation.”   The Without Rhyme Nor Reason comedy tour launches as the U.S. faces a mental health crisis among children and young adults. Fueled by pandemic era challenges, recent data shows that suicide attempts among young people have dramatically increased over the past two years. A 2021 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory report stated that Emergency Room visits for suspected suicide attempts were 51% higher for adolescent girls and 4% higher for adolescent boys compared to the same period in early 2019. Also, in 2021, the American College Health Association released the National College Health Assessment that stated one in four students had relayed to have had suicidal thoughts, whereas two percent of those had attempted suicide within the last year.   https://www.instagram.com/withoutrhymenorreason/   https://www.instagram.com/slufoster/
