This Day in Legal History: Switzerland Federal Charter SignedThis day in legal history marks the anniversary of the signing of the Federal Charter on August 1, 1291, which laid the foundation for the Swiss Confederation. This historic agreement united three Alpine cantons—Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden—establishing a pact for mutual defense against external threats and maintaining internal peace. The Federal Charter, known as the "Bundesbrief," is one of the earliest examples of a written constitution in Europe, symbolizing the birth of Switzerland as a confederation. The signatories pledged to support each other in disputes and conflicts, emphasizing the principles of cooperation and self-governance. This alliance was crucial in resisting the influence of the Habsburg dynasty, which sought to dominate the region. Over time, additional cantons joined the confederation, expanding and strengthening the alliance. The Federal Charter's emphasis on mutual defense and collaboration laid the groundwork for Switzerland's longstanding tradition of neutrality and federalism. It remains a significant symbol of Swiss national identity and independence. The principles enshrined in the charter continue to influence Switzerland's political structure and commitment to direct democracy. Today, August 1 is celebrated as Swiss National Day, commemorating the unity and enduring legacy of the Federal Charter.Accounting regulators and industry leaders are drafting reforms to state CPA licensing rules to expand the profession's workforce by allowing new pathways to earn the credential. These changes may include skills acquired outside the classroom. Draft changes to model legislation, serving as a template for state regulations, could be ready for public comment by September. The goal is to finalize these changes before next year's legislative sessions, according to Sue Coffey, CEO of public accounting for the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. The reforms aim to address declining graduation rates and a workforce that has shrunk by 17% since the pandemic. Proposed pathways for earning the CPA credential may include a mix of formal education and work experience, potentially eliminating the requirement for 150 college credit hours and specific schooling.A recent report suggests offering skills-based paths without traditional education requirements, which could attract more candidates, including minority students. The report also recommends increasing starting wages, improving the profession's image, and providing more flexible schedules. The pipeline task force is collaborating with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy to develop model language and outline essential skills for credentialed accountants. In September, a broader group of industry leaders will discuss advancing these recommendations and developing a scorecard to measure progress.States are already exploring flexible education requirements, with some proposing alternatives such as apprenticeships and different combinations of education and experience. Coffey emphasizes that any licensing reforms should maintain the rigor of the CPA license while accommodating state-specific solutions.CPAs Pitch More ‘Flexible' Licensing Rules to Expand WorkforceRudolph Giuliani has agreed to pay $100,000 in cash and use proceeds from future sales of his multimillion-dollar homes to settle administrative bankruptcy fees, concluding his Chapter 11 case. Giuliani and his largest creditors reached an agreement outlining how he will exit bankruptcy without having to testify about his finances. Despite a judge ruling that the case must be dismissed due to a lack of progress, Giuliani initially struggled to guarantee payment for an estimated $400,000 in fees. Under the proposed order, Giuliani will immediately pay $100,000 to Global Data Risk LLC, with the remaining fees to be covered by proceeds from the sale of his Manhattan penthouse or his Palm Beach condominium. GDR will have liens on both properties and may foreclose if fees are not paid within six months. The original trio push it to the limit with the 1983 classic Scarface. A bumper start to 2024 for the crew as they unpack this divisive 80's piece of drug-fuelled lore."Scarface," released in 1983, remains a seminal piece in the landscape of American cinema, directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone. This film has garnered a cult following and continues to influence modern filmmaking and culture. Its impact can be felt not just in the realms of cinema but also in fashion, music, and pop culture at large. The story of "Scarface" is a dark and intense journey through the American Dream gone awry. It follows the rise and fall of Tony Montana (played with ferocious intensity by Al Pacino), a Cuban immigrant who arrives in Miami with nothing and ruthlessly claws his way to the top of a drug empire. Montana's character is a complex blend of ambition, paranoia, and brutality. Al Pacino's portrayal is a career-defining performance that showcases his incredible range and commitment to a role. The screenplay, penned by Oliver Stone, draws heavily on the themes of greed, power, and corruption. Stone's writing is sharp, with a narrative that's both engaging and cautionary. His script paints a vivid picture of the 1980s drug scene, filled with excess, violence, and the pursuit of the American Dream. The dialogue in the film is memorable, with lines like "Say hello to my little friend!" achieving iconic status.Brian De Palma's direction is masterful. His use of long takes, extreme close-ups, and a vibrant colour palette all contribute to the film's intense and gritty atmosphere. The famous chainsaw scene, for instance, is a masterclass in building tension and horror, without relying heavily on the gore. De Palma's stylistic choices, such as the grandiose mansion and the lavish lifestyle of Montana, juxtapose starkly with the film's dark themes, creating a sense of unease and irony. The supporting cast, including Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira, Steven Bauer as Manny Ribera, and Robert Loggia as Frank Lopez, deliver performances that perfectly complement Pacino's Montana. Pfeiffer, in particular, shines as Montana's trophy wife, capturing the essence of a woman caught in the crossfire of her husband's destructive path. The film's cinematography by John A. Alonzo is another aspect that deserves praise. His use of neon lights and the Miami backdrop creates a surreal, almost dreamlike quality that contrasts with the film's violent and gritty content. The camera work is innovative, with sweeping shots that capture the grandeur and decay of Montana's world.Giorgio Moroder's synthesizer-heavy score is a character in itself, perfectly encapsulating the era and mood of the film. The soundtrack, including the iconic "Scarface (Push It to the Limit)" by Paul Engemann, adds an additional layer of 80s nostalgia and intensity to the film. However, "Scarface" is not without its controversies. The film has been criticized for its graphic violence, explicit language, and portrayal of stereotypes, particularly in its depiction of Cubans and the drug trade. While these elements are undoubtedly a part of the film's narrative and style, they have sparked debates about representation and sensitivity in cinema. The film's influence on pop culture is undeniable. It has inspired countless works in various media, from rap music to fashion. The image of Tony Montana, with his white suit and machine gun, has become an emblem of a certain kind of anti-hero, admired for his ruthless ambition yet serving as a cautionary tale of excess and hubris. In conclusion, "Scarface" is more than just a film; it's a cultural phenomenon that has stood the test of time. Its bold storytelling, powerful performances, and stylistic flair make it a landmark film in American cinema. While it may not be for the faint-hearted due to its violent and graphic content, its influence and relevance continue to resonate. Whether viewed as a critique of the American Dream, a character study of power and corruption, or a stylistic masterpiece of the 1980s, "Scarface" remains a significant and compelling watch. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Merry Christmas! In todays episode me and Tony get together after the death of Frank Lopez and throw a couple of 8 balls inside the pitcher of coffee that I kept next to me for the duration of this recording.....actually, I just recorded this inside of Tony's office. I was smart and aware enough not to get close to Ms. Elvira or Gina. Well at least thats how I felt because the energy was ridiculous but fun because the film community on Instagram participated and together we made this entire Christmas magical! 10 movies, my all time favorites and a Snoresville list. LETS GET IT!

In today's episode of the solecast I sit down with Frank Lopez to discuss Submedia's new film in their ongoing Trouble series, “And You Don't Stop.” And You Don't Stop is a documentary about radical hip-hop as done by grass roots activists. Its an excellent look on hip-hop's roots, its evolution and highlights some artists that are doing amazing work today. In our conversation we talk about: -Hip-hop rising from the failures of -Neoliberalism in the South Bronx -The rise of the Zulu Nation -The importance of aesthetics -The role music can play in social movements -Public Enemy and some of Franks favorite artists of the 80s/90s -Combatting sexism in Rap -What rap can learn from punk and why we need to build up a network of radical hip hop based social centers Frank also goes in depth talking about the artists he highlights in the documentary, the work they do and their music. Trouble #15: And You Don't Stop It's often said that hip hop is more than just a type of music…. it's a way of life. A code, a set of practices, an aesthetic and a way of handling yourself. And despite the efforts of industry executives to commodify it and strip it of its subversive potential, hip hop remains a lifestyle firmly rooted in the daily struggles faced by oppressed peoples around the world. It is a weapon, masquerading as culture. In this month's episode of Trouble, subMedia explores hip hop as a potent site of revolutionary politics, drawing on the first-hand knowledge and experiences of some of Turtle Island's baddest grassroots emcees: Ant Loc, Mic Crenshaw, La Marea, Sima Lee, Lee Reed and Mare. Just a heads up that some of the dialogue in the film is in Spanish, so for English speakers we recommend turning on the subtitles by clicking CC on the video player, and/or downloading the SRT file – particularly if you plan on using a hard copy of the video for screening purposes. As a bonus, The Stimulator brings us a very special sedition of Burning Cop Car, featuring the music of the emcees we interviewed for Trouble #15. Click here to check it out.

In this Hotwire we share the anti-fascist call from Florida to oppose Richard Spencer in Gainesville on October 19. We discuss the upcoming J20 trials in which nearly 200 protesters are charged with conspiracy for protesting the inauguration, as well as the outcome of the burning cop car case that just concluded in Paris. Considering the bullshit repression and liberal lawsuits in the wake of #Charlottesville, we make the case about why anti-fascism must mean anti-statism. We also borrow part of a great interview with Puerto Rican anarchist Frank Lopez on mutual relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Stay tuned until the end because we have some important calls to support political prisoners, calls to support forest defenders in Oregon, political prisoner birthdays, announcements for upcoming anarchist book fairs, and the repression roundup. {October 18, 2017} -------SHOW NOTES------ Table of Contents: Introduction {0:00} Headlines {1:42} Puerto Rico: Mutual Aid vs. the State {11:35} Anti-Fascism means Anti-Statism {18:40} J20 Trials Start Soon {23:32} Next Week's News {27:30} TOMORROW: Anti-fascists in Florida are calling for anti-racists to oppose Richard Spencer, who will speak at the University of Florida in Gainesville on Thursday, October 19. Stimulator was “the foul mouthed news anchor” on submedia's flagship shpw “Its The End Of The World As We Know If And I Feel Fine.” Todays interview is a discussion about his new documentary series called “Trouble” and how he sees its role in breaking social media alienation and getting people engaged and connected locally. Trouble is a monthly documentary series highlighting uprisings from around the world and taking an in depth and analytical look at them. Other Topics Discussed: Montreal's maple syrup and its cultural divergence from New England The evolution of submedia over a decade Basic thoughts on anarchism, and Submedia's engagement with it Mutual aid based projects that are replicable The relationship between anarchism and indigenous struggle The tension in social movements between the resistance and movement managers 90s hip-hop and its role in radicalizing him Trouble drops the last Sunday of every month. Tony Montana manages to leave Cuba during the Mariel exodus of 1980. He finds himself in a Florida refugee camp but his friend Manny has a way out for them: undertake a contract killing and arrangements will be made to get a green card. He's soon working for drug dealer Frank Lopez and shows his mettle when a deal with Colombian drug dealers goes bad. He also brings a new level of violence to Miami. Tony is protective of his younger sister but his mother knows what he does for a living and disowns him. Tony is impatient and wants it all however, including Frank's empire and his mistress Elvira Hancock. Once at the top however, Tony's outrageous actions make him a target and everything comes crumbling down. So say hello to our little friend and let us know what you think. TheSmokeyShelter.com

Many of you will remember Frank Lopez from the piece I did on him a few months ago. In addition to being an extremely talented photographer, Frank heads up the photography program at Greenhill School in Dallas, TX. Frank has started a new class with his colleague Chad Bittenbender who teaches chemistry. Together they oversee a semester of experimental work from students. All projects start with an idea or concept and then begin a process of learning and experimentation with various chemical processes. The impressive part of all of this is that these are high school students. Most universities are not working this extensively with wet process as most have closed their darkrooms for the ease of digital work. Special thanks to Frank Lopez and Chad Bittenbender, Greenhill School and the enormously talented students there for allowing me to come film and talk about what they are working on.
